Notwithstanding the iconic nature of the Harry Potter IP, it is one of the most astonishing works of imagination and creativity combined. But bringing the words from a literary franchise to life cannot be so easy. As such, Rupert Grint became one of the primary victims of the repercussions that came with getting cast in the live-action film series as one of the three main characters.

As Netflix’s library of films ebbs and flows, finding the right movie to watch can feel like bailing out an ocean with a spoon. And if you’re looking for a quality horror movie in particular, the search only gets harder. With the reality that Horror is one of the cheapest genres to produce, streamers like Netflix are cluttered with a veritable tsunami of bloody titles that sometimes seem indistinguishable from one another.
If you’re looking for a good horror movie to watch on Netflix that will truly scare you, picking a final selection can prove a more daunting task than sitting through yet another “Haunting of Hill House” rewatch; with or without its beloved “Bly Manor” chaser. But while the streamer’s priorities seem to shift as quickly as its content selection grows, Netflix’s horror library remains a high point — with original triumphs, including Guillermo del Toro...

The wait for new Panos Cosmatos features requires patience. Some 13 years since the premiere of Beyond the Black Rainbow has only brought 2018’s Mandy and a 2022 episode of Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities. Though word’s been quiet on his A24-backed feature Nekrokosm, the next big push might be here: with a script by Andrew Kevin Walker and producing credit from Adam McKay, Cosmatos has enlisted Kristen Stewart and Oscar Isaac for vampire picture Flesh of the Gods. [THR]
Flesh of the Gods––deriving from a story penned by Walker and Cosmatos––concerns Raoul and Alex, a wealthy married couple who trawl “an electric nighttime realm of 80’s LA” and find themselves meeting a “mysterious and enigmatic woman and her hard-partying cabal.” Thus ensues “a glamorous, surrealistic world of hedonism, thrills, and violence”––on the basis of Cosmatos’ CV, likely filled with ominous synthesizer tunes and the harshest...

A few days ago, Fangoria ran an article on character actor Ralph Ineson, whose credits include The Witch, The First Omen, Brahms: The Boy II, The Creator, Willow, The Green Knight, and much more, naming him “a modern horror icon.” Ineson took to social media to thank Fangoria for their kind words – and in response to Ineson’s post, director Guillermo del Toro revealed that Ineson has a “pivotal cameo” in his latest film, Frankenstein! He added that Ineson is amazing and fun to work with.
Ineson responded to del Toro, saying, “Thank you Boss, your set is a joyous place to be.”

From pressed pennies to serial killer trophies, collections come in all shapes and sizes. Special assortments do not have to be uniform, nor does their common trait need to be immediately apparent. Just take the menagerie of artifacts in the basement from “Cabin in the Woods” or the museum of haunted items central to “The Conjuring” series. In fact, some of the best collections are really puzzles holding the solutions to even more arcane mysteries.
Such is the case with “Oddity,” writer/director Damian Mc Carthy’s second feature film, which premiered at SXSW as part of festival’s midnight lineup on March 8. This weeks 20 Questions on Deadline guest is Dan Stevens. Of course we all remember his first major foray onto our screens as Matthew Crawley in Downton Abbey, and the untimely death of his character that had fans raging for his return.
But Hollywood called, and since then, Stevens has accrued a long list of credits, including Beauty and the Beast, I’m Your Man, Love, Death and Robots, Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities and Welcome to Chippendales. Recently he voiced a character in the Oscar-winning The Boy and the Heron, and next up, his new film Godzilla x Kong: the New Empire will be in theaters March 29th.
In this episode, Stevens digs into his reasons for needing a Taylor Swift collab, why Elvis is top of his list of dream roles, and how shooting Godzilla x Kong in Australia came with plenty of real-live snakes and killer trees.

Well, it's official — Netflix's live-action remake of "Avatar: The Last Airbender" paid off (for the company at least). Avatar Aang (Gordon Cormier) will get to continue mastering the elements, now that "Avatar" has been renewed for seasons 2 and 3.
"Avatar" is just the latest anime that Netflix has brought to live-action. On this spectrum, "Avatar" falls below the well-received "One Piece" remake but ahead of the swiftly-canned live-action "Cowboy Bebop" (that even original series creator Shinichirō Watanabe couldn't finish).
Netflix hasn't stopped there. The streamer is letting "Stranger Things" creators the Duffer Brothers take a crack at "Death Note" and has had a live-action "Gundam" movie in development since 2021. Other studios are getting into anime properties as well: Lionsgate has recruited "Shang-Chi" director Destin Daniel Cretton to adapt "Naruto" into a live-action movie.

Director Guillermo del Toro is moving ahead with one of his dream projects, an adaptation of Mary Shelley’s classic tale Frankenstein that is set up at the Netflix streaming service. We’ve heard that Frankenstein is expected to start filming (possibly under the working title Prodigal Father) on February 12th. The production will last nearly five months, wrapping up on July 5th. Filming will take place in Ontario, Canada, and possibly in London, England as well. It looks like Canada will be the first filming location, as del Toro recently took cast members Oscar Isaac (Moon Knight), Mia Goth (Pearl), Christoph Waltz (Inglourious Basterds), and Charles Dance (Game of Thrones) to eat at a Toronto restaurant, where they posed for a picture with the staff. You can take a look at the picture at the bottom of this article.

Back in March 2023, the news broke that filmmaker Guillermo del Toro was in the midst of casting a new film version of "Frankenstein" that he was slated to write and direct. At the time, it was said that Oscar Isaac and Mia Goth were set to star and that Andrew Garfield was to play the Monster. According to actor Doug Jones (who has worked with del Toro on several feature films), the director had long been at work on a "Frankenstein" movie that was meant to visually resemble Bernie Wrightson's "Frankenstein," a heavily illustrated printing of Mary Shelley's 1818 novel made by Marvel Comics back in 1983. At the time of Jones' comments, however, he was slated to play the Monster himself, as the actor commented on what "my look" would have been. That Wrightson-inspired version eventually evolved into the version mentioned above, which is being produced for Netflix.

Frankenstein continues Netflix’s partnership with del Toro, including the Oscar winner for Best Animated Feature Film, Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, the anthology series Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities, and the animated films Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans and Trollhunters: Tales of Arcadia.

Jacob Elordi will take Andrew Garfield‘s place in Guillermo Del Toro‘s Frankenstein adaption at Netflix, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
Elordi will star in the project alongside Oscar Isaac, Christopher Waltz and Felix Kammerer.

Elordi’s casting news comes on the heels of a busy season for the actor. Following his role as Elvis Presley in Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla, he also starred in Emerald Fennell’s Saltburn. Prior to the two projects, he was also known for his role on HBO’s Euphoria, where he played Nate Jacobs.
Frankenstein will be Del Toro’s second feature for Netflix, following his Pinocchio adaption, for which he won the Oscar for best animated feature at the 2023 ceremony.

Guillermo del Toro is working on his own adaptation of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, and Deadline reports today that Jacob Elordi will take over the role of Frankenstein’s iconic monster for actor Andrew Garfield.

Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein follows brilliant scientist Victor Frankenstein, who brings his monster to life in an experiment that ultimately leads to the undoing of both the creator and his tragic creation. The acclaimed filmmaker previously said of his Frankenstein at the 10th-anniversary screening of Pacific Rim, “I’m doing Frankenstein. We’re working on it. We start shooting in February, and it’s a movie I have been wanting to do for 50 years since I saw the first Frankenstein.

The upcoming movie I am most excited about, bar none, is Guillermo del Toro's "Frankenstein." One of my favorite timeless stories told by one of my favorite artists? Sign me up!
It's the film that del Toro's career has been building towards. The man loves monster movies and gothic literature like no one else. His empathy is always most reserved for the outsider, whether Hellboy, the fish man from "The Shape of Water," or the socialist rebels in Franco's Spain. These flourishes trace back to his childhood infatuation with "Frankenstein," the book and movies alike; take a look at his living room.
Del Toro, who considers Frankenstein and his monster one of fiction's few "universal" characters, has been teasing this adaptation for years. He implied it was on the horizon while speaking to ComingSoon.net in 2008 (he obviously got sidetracked in the meantime). During a 2022 sitdown with Mike Flanagan...

Earlier this year, it was revealed that Oscar Isaac (Moon Knight), Andrew Garfield, and Mia Goth (Pearl) would be starring in the adaptation of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein that director Guillermo del Toro has set up at the Netflix streaming service. Del Toro recently confirmed that casting news – and added that Christoph Waltz (Inglourious Basterds) will be in the film as well. Now it appears that Whats on Netflix has revealed which roles Isaac, Garfield, and Goth will be playing!
According to the site, Garfield will be playing Dr. Frankenstein himself, while Isaac takes on the role of the Monster and Goth plays the Bride. They’ve also heard that the project is going by the working title Prodigal Father, and that it has the following logline: Set in Eastern Europe in the 19th Century, the story of Dr. Pretorius, who needs to track down Frankenstein’s monster- who is...

After decades spent firmly in the zeitgeist, the pop cultural legacy of "Star Trek" shows up in some unexpected places -- like an episode of Guillermo del Toro's horror anthology directed by "Mandy" filmmaker Panos Cosmatos. In a recent interview with Variety, production designer Tamara Deverell described the process of building the set for "The Interview," an episode of "Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities" that takes place largely inside a hazy, orange, retro-futuristic room.
Fans of "Cabinet of Curiosities" will remember "The Interview" as perhaps the show's trippiest installment. The hour stars comedians Eric André, Steve Agee, and Charlyne Yi, plus actress (and future "Rebel Moon" star) Sofia Boutella, actor Michael Therriault, and screen legend Peter Weller. In what appears to be a curious slow-burn experiment, a group of disparate people -- including a psychic, novelist, record producer, and astrophysicist -- are gathered together in a drug-filled mansion...

Guillermo del Toro’s boundless imagination, from the gothic horrors of “Crimson Peak” to the creature-feature-inspired “The Shape of Water,” has been cultivated by a lifelong love of cinema. The Mexican filmmaker proudly wears his influences on his sleeves, while championing the past and future of moviegoing and movie-making. Just take his latest projects.
There’s the stunning, stop-motion “Pinocchio” reimagining, which is leagues better than Disney’s straight-to-streaming competitor — far too slick for its own good (no matter how much Tom Hanks tried). And, also at Netflix, there’s the “Cabinet of Curiosities“: an eight-part horror anthology that unfortunately does not include any directing from del Toro, but does feature his writing, producing, and a Rod Serling-like “Twilight Zone” style intro for each episode.
Before that, the 2021 show business noir “Nightmare Alley” saw del Toro loosely remake a 1947 classic, but he also imbued plenty of his own...

Generally speaking, TV is a less frightening medium than film. (Broadcast news notwithstanding.) Part of that’s the serialized nature of the format; it can be difficult to get really scared wondering whether Scully and Mulder will make it out of any given “X-Files” nightmare when there are 18 or so installments left in the season and you know the show can’t go on without its star characters. It doesn’t help matters that network standards have also kept horror TV decidedly tamer than anything found in R-rated horror efforts for decades; you just can’t put a Rob Zombie or Eli Roth joint anywhere.
And yet, in spite of those disadvantages, the genre has positively flourished on television as of late, with plenty of creepy limited series and spooky serialized dramas bringing terror to the small screen. Audiences curious about what caused this phenomenon can thank “American Horror Story,...

It’s 50 years later in “The Exorcist: Believer,” and director David Gordon Green has rebooted William Friedkin’s horror masterpiece of demonic possession without sacrificing the original’s naturalism, ambiguity, and religious faith. However, there’s a new demon, two possessed girls, and a multi-faith exorcism. That’s because, in 2023, it takes a village to battle more powerful evil.
But it was vital that Spfx makeup designer Chris Nelson (Oscar winner for “Suicide Squad”) got the demonic look right, given the importance and influence of Dick Smith’s iconic work in the Og. “Chris Nelson and our makeup team began their approach to ‘Believer’ by studying the work of Dick Smith,'” Green told IndieWire. “It was groundbreaking in 1973, and we wanted to reach for the quality of in-camera, practical, makeup effects as much as possible.

IndieWire reached out to the cinematography nominees for the 75th Emmy Awards (Emmys). Once again, we used the data to build a chart and find tendencies. It seems that Sony takes the lead with the Venice. Also, it’s a nice surprise to explore the Kinefinity Mavo Edge and the Blackmagic Ursa 12K in that prestige list. Furthermore, there’s a solid presence of Red too.

"I know that house, and I know what it's capable of." Peacock has unveiled a quick 60-second official trailer for their Halloween streaming series called John Carpenter's Suburban Screams - out in October (obviously). After releasing the two new Halloween movies directly streaming on Peacock, the service has now partnered with Carpetner to let him develop his own horror anthology series - basically the same thing Netflix did with Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities. "Each episode will delve into the monstrous evil that lurks beneath the surface of friendly suburbia through the lens of one frightful tale... In addition to firsthand accounts, the episodes will include cinematic reenactments, personal archives, and historic town press coverage." One description says this is like Unsolved Mysteries from John Carpenter, with dramatic recreations. Scary! Episodes by John Carpenter, Michelle Latimer, Jan Pavlacky, Jordan Roberts. It’s Nicholas Britell versus Nicholas Britell in the Emmys race for the “Succession” (Max) and “Andor” (Disney+) original scores — and the Emmy-winning composer is also competing for the “Andor” theme as well. Not surprisingly, he’s favored to take home wins for both “Succession” and “Andor” in the respective categories. Which is only fitting since this is his last chance at the big musical “Succession” prize after being denied the first three seasons, and his unconventional theme for the critically acclaimed “Rogue One” prequel is a standout.
For score, Britell is up against HBO’s “The Last of Us” (Gustavo Santaolalla) and “The White Lotus” (Cristobal Tapia de Veer), and Netflix’s “Wednesday” (Danny Elfman and Chris Bacon). For main title, he’s up against “Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities”, “Ms. Marvel”, “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power”, and “Wednesday” (Elfman).

“It shows you are about to go into a very interesting world,” states Holly Amber Church about the theme she wrote for “Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities.” For our recent webhcat she continues, “It’s mysterious, it’s thrilling, it’s scary and it’s beautiful all at the same time.” Watch the exclusive video interview above.
The Netflix anthology series comprises eight episodes, each telling a different horror story. The collection of stories were curated by del Toro, with two being works he had written. The Oscar-winning director of “The Shape of Water” (2017) also handpicked the eight directors for the series. All the stories are dark and touch on various moral themes. As In Its Wake begins Pastor Kurdt Waidmann is having a crisis of faith and asks God for a sign. He no sooner finishes than he gets the news that one of his parishioners was killed by a hit-and-run driver right outside the church. That probably wasn’t the sign he wanted, but The Lord works in mysterious ways.
In a restaurant, four friends Amy (Paige Foskett; Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities), Laura, Tim and Manny are trying to figure out what to do with their weekend.
At a nearby table, three businessmen Mitch, Sean, and Sam are doing the same. Until Sam decides to start trouble. But, before he and Tim can start throwing punches a familiar face appears and defuses the situation.

Dark Universe, Universal’s scrapped attempt to make a series of reboots of their classic monster properties that would crossover with each other, was overseen by Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan – but long before Kurtzman and Morgan got involved, Universal had offered Guillermo del Toro the chance to take over their monster universe. Del Toro turned down the opportunity, which is a choice he regretted. But now his longtime producing partner J. Del Toro’s Best Picture winner The Shape of Water was a take on Creature from the Black Lagoon, and he’s now developing a live-action of adaptation of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein.

HBO is once again the leader among Emmy nominations — though it’s a little closer than it was a year ago.
The premium cable outlet and sibling streamer Max gathered 127 nominations for the 75th Emmy Awards on Wednesday. That’s 13 fewer nods than the two platforms combined to receive in 2022.
HBO and Max’s total is two dozen more than second-place Netflix, which had 103 nominations. Apple TV+ finished third with 50 nominations, Hulu and Amazon’s Prime Video got 42 each, and Disney+ has 40. (There’s a bit of fuzziness with the Hulu numbers, as the Television Academy counted shows like The Bear and Fleishman Is in Trouble under FX, which produced them, even though they streamed solely on Hulu. Disney says Hulu has 64 total nominations rather than 42 as listed by the Academy, with the FX/Hulu shows accounting for the discrepancy.)

It’s appropriate that Netflix dropped the sixth season of “Black Mirror” on June 15, the same day that Emmy voting began. The series isn’t eligible for this year’s awards, of course, but it has been a dominant force at the Emmys for years, even sparking a rule change that affects a number of other anthology programs this year.
And because of that rule change, it’s going to be a lot harder for any of those other programs — which include “Documentary Now!” and “Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities” — to be nominated for Emmys this year.
First, a little background. “Black Mirror,” created by Charlie Brooker and first airing in 2011, was inspired by the classic 1950s and ’60s series “The Twlight Zone,” in which Rod Serling used each episode to tell a different story — usually creepy or scary, usually with a twist, always with a moral. Back then,...

Production designer Tamara Deverell was tasked with creating eight different periods and working with eight different directors for Netflix’s “Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities.”
The anthology series required Deverell, 2020’s artisan award recipient for production design, to tap into her love for building gritty sets and build everything from a brutalist architecture room inspired by her work on “Star Trek: Discovery” to using an old warehouse for an alien autopsy.
Here Deverell breaks down some of her favorite sets from the series.

The first episode tells the story of Tim Blake Nelson as Nick Appleton, who purchases the titular Lot 36 from a recently deceased old man and discovers strange items such as a séance table and rare books. However, the Lot also holds dark demonic secrets
What were some initial conversations you had about the set build for this?

“It was pretty much like working on eight films,” states makeup artist Sean Sansom about “Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities” in our recent webchat. His collaborator Mike Hill adds, “It was, ‘how much time do we have to build before the next episode starts?’ We had to come up with a plan.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.
The Netflix anthology series comprises eight episodes, each telling a different horror story. The collection of stories were curated by del Toro, with two being works he had written. The Oscar-winning filmmaker of “The Shape of Water” (2017) also handpicked the eight directors for the series. All the stories are dark and touch on various moral themes.

This story about “Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities” first appeared in the Limited Series/Movies issue of TheWrap’s Emmy magazine.
It’s enough of a task to create the look for one horror mini-feature, but imagine if your assignment was a total of eight, in the style of “Tales from the Crypt” or “Alfred Hitchcock Presents.” And each had a different director. And none of the stories were directly related to one another. And all were overseen by a beloved Oscar-winning filmmaker whose name alone is a brand. “Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities” production designer Tamara Deverell knew going in that it would be challenging to serve every vision, with filmmakers as diverse as Jennifer Kent (“The Babadook”), Panos Cosmatos (“Mandy”), Vincenzo Natali (“Splice”) and Ana Lily Amirpour (“A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night”) as her just-for-starters roster.
