Very weak script, hard to stay focussed

Warning: Spoilers
Unfortunately, this movie had nothing to keep me interested. There was no logic to the actions of the characters and they didn't develop. No theme was effectively developed either. I can't judge whether the actors did a good job, because the issues with script and directions were so huge. Some easy changes might have given the story a chance. If Leonard had shot the commander at the beginning, maybe the lunatic actions of Laurentz might have been driven by something. If the timeline had been a few days instead of one, or if Leonard would have had the chance to build up some determination, it might have been logical that the doctor pointed him out as the leader of the resistance. Maybe if there had been some planning involved in ambushing the Germans in the woods instead of setting it afire with one gesture - and then the fire went out by itself or something? - some tension would have been built up.

But alas, this time our sneak preview didn't turn out well. ;-)

Best Belgian movie ever

Warning: Spoilers
Despite the simple story, the script slowly progresses from a forgotten village that peacefully awaits the end of the war into a hell that will cost many lives, just because of one crazy german. The lead role from Iain Glen illustrates the desperate situation: he is not a hero but just tries to survive. No spectacular front scenes with bombings and shootings but a pure drama of how an event can escalate into a bloodbath. A lot of drama is packed into the story with many twists. Direction and DOP did excellent work and the acting is of high level (no overacting but continuously setting the many moods and feelings). Locations are well chosen and photography is beautiful despite the dark situation. Sasha Luss (known for action movies) gives a surprisingly cool emotionally performance, which is a real value for the movie. The music score is frequently present and underlines well the situation in the story. You are really caught by the drama and the movie is not one minute too long. The only little drawback is the too optimistic ending.
