Léa Seydoux was originally meant to star opposite Gaspard Ulliel in Bertrand Bonello’s audacious sci-fi love story “The Beast.” But the beloved César-winning French actor died at age 37 in January 2022 after a skiing accident while the film was still in pre-production, and he was posthumously replaced by George MacKay.
Seydoux previously starred alongside Ulliel, revered for roles in movies including Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s “A Very Long Engagement” and Bonello’s own “Saint Laurent,” in Xavier Dolan’s 2016 Cannes winner “It’s Only the End of the World.” Seydoux, who recently spoke with IndieWire about her multiple roles in “The Beast” as a woman confronted across centuries by a devastating impossible romance, did not get the chance to talk to Ulliel about “The Beast” before filming. He did, however, leave her a WhatsApp voice message praising her turn in Bruno Dumont’s media satire “France,” a box office hit in France...

It’s hard to imagine anyone other than John Malkovich as the title character in Spike Jonze’s Being John Malkovich, for obvious reasons. While he wasn’t always inclined to star in the film, following its title, which Charlie Kaufman refused to change, Malkovich eventually agreed to lead the comedy.
Recounting his experience filming the bizarre comedy, spearheaded by director Spike Jonze, Malkovich recalled one strange note he received from the debutant director.
John Malkovich Received Cues on How He Would Act by Spike Jonze Being John Malkovich (1999)
Thoroughly impressed by Kaufman’s screenplay, despite being hesitant about starring in a film named after himself, John Malkovich eventually agreed, thanks to Francis Ford Coppola. While the future of the Anomalisa creator’s screenplay was uncertain, after Coppola got his hands on Kaufman’s work, he passed it on to Spike Jonze, who was engaged to Sofia Coppola at the time.

An in-depth report paints a portrait of star power run amok on the set of Suddenly – a Jake Gyllenhaal drama that fell apart days before filming.
Whether it’s Val Kilmer’s antics on the set of The Island Of Doctor Moreau or Sly Stallone demanding last-minute changes during the filming of Rambo 3, cinema history is littered with stories of star power gone wild. According to a report in France’s Technikart magazine (and spotted by World of Reel) we can add the Jake Gyllenhaal-starring survival drama Suddenly to the list.
The film – essentially a two-hander about a pair of lovers trapped on an inhospitably cold island – was originally due to begin filming in the autumn of 2021. It was to be directed by Thomas Bidegain, with the script co-written by newcomer Valentine Monteil. For Bidegain, known for writing such films as A Prophet and Rust And Bone, it would...

David Fincher seems happy with no cinema screens but all of the creative control as he reveals he has extended his deal with the streaming giant Netflix.
David Fincher has renewed his deal with Netflix for another three years, it’s been revealed.
Fincher has been involved with the streaming company in one way or another since it first dipped its toe into creating original programming and films. The Se7en director produced House Of Cards, the Netflix show which revolutionised the way the company operated and saw it shift from licensing films and shows to instead become a production powerhouse in its own right.
That was a decade ago – back in 2013 – and David Fincher has only strengthened his working relationship with Netflix in the years since, producing TV shows such as Mindhunter and Love, Death And Robots for the company.

MK2 Films has acquired a collection of films and TV series directed by Bruno Dumont, the award-winning French director behind “Life of Jesus” and “Humanity.”
The acquisition, unveiled during Mipcom Cannes, covers the bulk of the director’s work, spanning eight films and TV series including “Li’l Quinquin,” which premiered at Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight. MK2 Films will represent rights to some of these titles, in France and/or international markets, apart from a few titles like “Slack Bay” whose global rights are still handled by Memento International.
“Bruno Dumont is, of course, a major figure of contemporary cinema,” said Nathanaël Karmitz, MK2’s chairman of the executive board. Karmitz praised Dumont for the “originality of his unusual, unpredictable [films], veering from gravitas to some unnerving, comedic tangents.” He continued, “Iconoclastic and consistently courageous in its form, his work perfectly represents the free and ambitious cinema that we are proud to promote.

Hitman dramedy “Knok,” pandemic-thriller “Lt-21,” and dystopian sendup “Rictus” will head off Have A Good One’s (Hago) Mipcom slate, as the Paris-based TV development and sales company has boarded two additional series currently in production.
Produced by Mifa Pictures (Groupe StoryPlus) and N22 Productions for 13ème Rue France, and created by Guillaume Duhesme, Bastien Ughetto and Lucie Moreau, the off-kilter “Knok” follows a hapless single-dad inducted into the underworld and made an unwilling contract-killer after accidentally witnessing a hit. César-winner Sylvie Testud (“Fear and Trembling”) and up-and-comer Johann Cuny lead the cast for a loopy six-part season that won acclaim at the La Rochelle Fiction Festival earlier this year.

In 2022, Jane Campion made history as the first female director to be nominated for Best Director twice. And then, for “The Power of Dog,” she followed through and won, becoming the third female director to take home the top prize.
The win was a triumphant and long overdue achievement for Campion, who has consistently been one of the best directors actively working since her 1989 feature debut “Sweetie.” The black comedy about a dysfunctional family marked the New Zealand-born director as a great talent immediately, entering the Cannes Film Festival and taking home an Independent Spirit Award for Best Foreign Film shortly afterwards. Just a year later, Campion released her first masterpiece: the Janet Frame biopic, “An Angel at My Table.”
From there, her 1993 feature “The Piano” netted Campion her first Best Director nomination, while efforts like “The Portrait of a Lady,” “Holy Smoke,” “In the Cut,” and “Bright Star” received acclaim.

Acting challenges on Ru Paul’s Drag Race have a very storied her-story on the show. while there have been some amazing performances on the show there have also have had some truly terrible ones such as the Lady McBitch challenge during season seven! However, I have to say that last week’s improvised whodunnit ‘forensic queens’ was one of my all-time favourites. Following in the footsteps of the Netflix original series Murderville or the highly successful Jury Duty show, the queens of All-Stars eight had to improvise their way through a series of scenes. In a shocking surprise, the two highlights of this challenge were Lala (who claimed her first win of the season this episode) and Jessica Wilde, who both delivered hilarious portrayals of the crooked security guard and snubbed All-Star queen respectively. Before we could even get to the challenge however there were buckets full of drama...

The 76th edition of the Cannes Film Festival came to a close on Saturday, May 27 after two weeks of films, celebrities, parties and interviews in the small city on the French Riviera. Now that the prizes have been given out, we can start looking at what could be top contenders for next year’s Oscars. Let’s analyze the results from this year’s festival and see this history that each category has when it comes to the Academy Awards.
Over the past several years the festival has been a springboard for major players in the Oscar derby. We’ve really seen it be an influence in the International Feature category where in-competition films have been nominated a regular basis. Recent Cannes films that ended up being top awards contenders in above the line categories include “Triangle of Sadness,” “Drive My Car,” “Parasite,” “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and “BlacKkKlansman.

If Hollywood writers go on strike — a possibility as we close in on the May 1 deadline without a new deal between the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) — the impact will be felt far beyond New York and Los Angeles. Around the world, producers and distribution companies, not to mention non-wga affiliated writers, are closely watching the ongoing negotiations, with an expectation that a WGA walkout could mean a boost in demand for new international content.
“As with previous WGA strikes, we’d expect there will be an increased demand for content from outside the U.S., particularly from English-speaking countries like the U.K. and Australia,” says Martin Moszkowicz and Oliver Berben of German mini-major Constantin Film, producers of the English-language Resident Evil horror franchise as well as German films and series including We Children From Bahnhof Zoo, which streams on Amazon,...

Editors of Saturday Night Live’s pre-filmed segments are threatening to go on strike unless NBCUniversal bargains a fair contract for them with the Motion Picture Editors Guild, IATSE Local 700. NBCUniversal, however, reached out to the guild tonight to offer new dates for talks that could avert a walkout.
“The film workers at SNL last year made it clear they want a union, and management acknowledged their wishes,” Cathy Repola, the guild’s national executive director, said before NBCU offered to return to the bargaining table. “Therefore, it’s very disappointing that despite the Guild’s best efforts, there is still no framework for a contract in place. We remain committed to getting a contract in place as soon as possible and leave all options on the table to achieve that goal.”

Director Nabil Ayouch’s “Casablanca Beats” wears its narrative trappings ever so lightly. If the film’s bookends prime the viewer for an inspiration teacher drama, a kind of “Dead Poets Society” or “School of Rockablanca” about an unconventional prof helping his students at a community arts center find their voice, there’s both more and less to it than that.
Less in the sense that the film is not at all plot-heavy, with neither the teacher, one-time rapper Anas (played by real-life rapper Anas Basbousi), nor his students, who also play characters that share their real names, ever taking the lead. But what “Casablanca Beats” forgoes in conventional narrative it more than makes up for in filmic form, charging forward as a nonstop blitz of lyrics, language, movement and music.

Kaia Gerber showed off her amazing model’s body in a mini dress.
Being Cindy Crawford‘s daughter definitely gives you some amazing genetics and supermodel powers.
The American model and actress stunned in an amazing thigh-skimming dress while posing in a hotel hallway.
Gerber leaned against the wall wearing a tight black dress with modern cutouts on the top.
Of course, she had to show off her incredibly long legs as well, which is exactly what the black ankle-wrap heels helped to do.
She styled her hair in very light waves and didn’t accessorize this look with jewelry or a bag.

A poisoner. A dabbler in the dark arts. A murderess. Catherine de Medici (Samantha Morton/Liv Hill), Queen of France in the 16th Century, has a reputation for being a deadly, devious ruler in Starz‘s The Serpent Queen. This twisty drama takes a deeper look at the royal, a mathematician and polyglot, who in her time was called “the most powerful woman in Europe.” It’s a fresh, edgy take (including raucous rock riffs; and costumes that give a nod to avant-garde couture fashion) and is based on the nonfiction book by Leonie Frida, Catherine de Medici: Renaissance Queen of France. (Credit: Starz) Morton addresses the “serpent” moniker in the title: “From a very early age she’s had to play the long game, knowing that she has to survive,” says the actress, who appears in all the episodes, but takes over the main role from Hill about halfway through the series.

After two years of cancellations and delays, the Cannes Film Festival finally returned to the south of France during the month of May. The winners of this year’s festivities were announced on Saturday, May 25. How many of these will become major players in this year’s Oscar derby? Below let’s review the results from the 75th installment of the international festival and examine the history each serves as a forecaster for the Academy Awards.
In recent years, Cannes has served as a launching pad for films that have become major contenders in awards season. This is particularly true in the International Feature category which, for the past several years, has had several nominees that were screened in competition. It’s also been true in other categories, including several above the line races, with films like “Drive My Car,” “Parasite,” “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and “BlacKkKlansman” having their premieres on the Croissette.
