Brokedown Palace (1999)
the moving finale saves this film
(ATTENTION SPOILERS AHEAD)It is a average picture but the ending was very unexpected and moving (to the song "Deliver Me" by Sarah Brightman). This movie deserves a second viewing if you want to know who put the drugs in the bag... When Bill Pullman said to Claire Danes "We both know that you didn't do it"... we can see the trouble that passes on Alice's face. She's very guilty indeed and she knows how to lie ... and she was the one who was alone with the bags before they got to the taxi... The movie includes a terrific song by Delerium called "Silence" performed by Sarah McLachlan... The final shot when we see Alice in prison with a smile on her face is a moment of grace. She has done the right thing and feels delivered ... Rating: 8/10
L'appartement (1996)
A bright first film
Gilles Mamouni is playing with the audience with the story of Max (Vincent Cassel) in search of his biggest lost love (Monica Bellucci) just before to get engaged to another woman. Mamouni uses many flashbacks sequences without warning so the best way to know where we are in the story is to watch for the actor's haircut. Oherwise it can get very confusing... Still a strong film debut for Mamouni, beautifully photographed by Thierry Arbogast (the 5th element, the Messenger), and Monica Bellucci is a darling to watch ... I felt a little disappointed near the end so I gave it 9 out of 10.
Dark City (1998)
The best movie of 1998
I have read that the origin of this amazing film came from a dream that Alex Proyas had... Spellbinding work that keep you to the edge of your seat ... Special mention to the exciting picture score by Trevor Jones... It is become in my mind an instant movie classic. Too bad I haven't seen this film on the big screen ... Rating: 10/10
L'âge des possibles (1995)
uneven but satisfying
There is a special charm to this film about the lives of 10 young adults in Strasbourg ... The dialogue is somewhat a little loose but it comes pretty natural... The interaction between the characters, their fears, their hopes are the main ingredient to this film. Realistic depiction of everyday life with a touch of idealism. Score: 7/10
Lola rennt (1998)
A gem of a movie
Run Lola Run is an experience of pure cinema. Fast, inventive and fun ! I recommend this techno-pulsating-beat film to everyone. Score :10/10
N'oublie pas que tu vas mourir (1995)
a movie worth watching
The film tells the journey of a young french man named Benoit after he learned that he had contracted the AIDS virus. Xavier Beauvois directs and plays the lead character. An interesting film in which Benoit embarks to an odyssey into the hell of sex and drugs in a desperate move to forget about his condition. The ending is truly surprising. Some scenes are a bit overlong (the drug taking). I was tempted to call this film "the french Trainspotting" but there is no humor to find in this one... score: 8/10.
