Romance (1999)
blech
My god, what a tedious, dull, unpleasant affair. This movie fails as erotica and as a "feminist manifesto," which so many misguided viewers seem to believe it to be. I had written a much longer, detailed description of this movie's countless flaws, but IMD seems to have deleted it. So let me just say that there is no reason to watch this movie. It is NOT shocking, not erotic, not even remotely interesting. If you have the choice of picking at your toenails or viewing this steaming pile of manure, pick the former.
And in answer to what many fans will likely say, I watched the movie with three intelligent women who found it equally dreadful.
Solimsa jucheongwidong (1982)
Absolutely fabulous
Definitely the single most hilarious kung fu movie ever EVER made. I LOOOOOVE this flick! Ridiculous FX, nonsensical and convoluted plotlines, and the dialogue - oh my. Watch for the deadly flying heart, the excorcism scene -- well, really, every scene is brilliant. This is a must-see for fans of low-budget unintentionally comical kung fu flicks. 10/10
The Meaning of Life (1983)
Weak Python
Monty Python's weakest effort. Some skits are quite funny, many simply crude and pointless. It's as if Monty Python was trying too hard, giving the impression of a bad imitation, sort of like those annoying kids in high school you knew who spent hours repeating Python skits.
For good Python, go watch Holy Grail or Life of Brian.
Sayat Nova (1969)
Gorgeous
A beautiful, moving, lyrical movie. This allegorical tale is visually stunning and at times terrifying. Each scene is like a painting and the colors and costumes alone are worth the viewing. The movie may be abstract but the payoff for anyone with a decent attention span is wonderful. The soundtrack is equally gorgeous, and the movie is utterly captivating.
Shichinin no samurai (1954)
One of the greatest films ever made.
There really aren't enough good words to use to describe this movie accurately. I first saw the final battle scene as part of an exhibit on the history of film making in London, and I was immediately hooked. This movie transcends the samurai genre and combines elements of drama, romance, humour, and violence. The acting is top-notch, as are the cinematography and soundtrack. I've seen this movie probably about five times, and I can't wait for the next chance. This movie should be required viewing.
