Moral Orel (2005)
Not at all what I expected, in a good way
First thing you should know is that the comparisons of this show to South Park are abysmal. After hearing them, I was sure this was just going to be another cynical, edgy adult comedy, but it's so much more than that. This show takes place within a seemingly exadareted Christian town, where everyone's nuts about god, even the main character. Even the mainly comedic episodes have a way of comunicating what messed up things living in such a repressive society can do to a person, especially a child.
However it's deeper than just a dark comedy about the harm of organised religion. Moral Orel disturbingly realistically depicts living in an abusive household. Despite that, it doesn't make the flawed characters one dimensional. Their backstories and well developed character traits make the show one of a kind. It seems unbelievable, but I've never seen a another series present it in such a raw, out there manner. To clarify - it's not just a background plot or a throwaway line here or there. It's essentially what this show is about. It's amazing, and I'm really sorry it ended up being only 3 seasons long due to being cancelled for being "too dark". I might not be able to put this into words well, but this show is absolutley worth your time. It gets better with every season, too.
