Foreign Correspondent (1940)
hof
This film makes me like Hitchcock even more the plot was very good even confusing at some times but I like that. What I find to be so unique about Hitchcock are his sound effects and instrumentals and also his extreme close-ups.
He is truly the king of suspense during the tower scene you are lead on to believe the main character has died midway through the movie and then you are relieved to find he is not.
Hitchcock just seems to look at movies from a much different perspective than other directors and that's what made him so successful.
Casablanca (1942)

I am not much for romance films but the complex plot really kept you guessing until the very end.
The lighting was the most beautiful I have seen especially on Ingrid Bergman she was always a bit brighter than everyone else and this really brought out her beauty and made her seem more elegant.
I really liked the first scene in Rick's the lighting and focus kept you looking around the entire room even though you know what you were suppose to be focusing on.
another great feature to this film was the music it was very elegant also and just added to that feel.
I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang (1932)
hof
By far one of my favorite films Paul Muni the star of the film did a great job in playing the innocent man charged with a bogus crime. The film which was made in 1932 really showed the sufferable conditions of the penal chain gang system. He eventually escapes the chain gang only to be turned back in after a fem fatale transforms him from a successful civil architect living under a different name back into a prisoner. As far as cinematography there was a great underwater shot and by far the most striking scene was the last scene when Paul Muni fades into the darkness reveling how an innocent man had been transformed into a criminal by the unjust penal system.
The General (1926)
Adams
The general had a very simple plot but yet still very funny,
a train engineer attempts to enlist in the confederate army to fight off the northern forces but while in the recruiting office the recruiting officer decides he would be more valuable to the south as an engineer.
Knowing this the man accepts he will not serve his country until an unlikely turn of events happens his train and his girlfriend are captured by the northern forces. He goes after his train and his girl in a comedic but yet repetitive train chase. In the end he serves his country and gets the girl.
Scarface (1932)
Adams
One of my favorite classic gangster films before I saw this movie was the remake Scarface staring Al Pacino. After this film, it is now my favorite.
The main character Antonio 'Tony' Camonte (played by Paul Muni) was a very evil, violent man but his charm and sharp wits made him the hero of the film.Tony starts the film underprivileged immigrant and works his way to the top of the mountain only to fall off a cliff at the top.
The classic self destruction from greed.Paul Muni really played the cool cat gangster role with ease he was made for this role. My new favorite gangster film scarface.
Stagecoach (1939)
Adams
I really don't like westerns but I liked this one because of the tremendous action scenes and the humor. This film made John Wayne the name it is today and he did a great job he was brave and just a real cool cat.
But what I believe really made the film itself was the drunk doctor if it weren't for his humor and his astounding acting the movie probably would have been a flop.
The Indian chase scene was great stunt work with no silly camera tricks the cinematography was great also lots of great long shots and close-ups.
Dracula (1931)
Adams
The lighting really makes this film and gives it an eerie feel.
But other than that I really didn't like the plot had a lot of holes and just seemed to skip around a lot and didn't flow properly.
It was very slow and not scary at all. I did like the castle and the scene with the giant spider web it gave off a very dark Gothic mood.
Vanhelsing was an easy choice for the best actor I also liked the crazed man.
The coolest part of the movie was the lighting just over the eyes when Dracula was putting someone in a trans. I have seen this used in many later films and i think this was the first film it was used in.
The Circus (1928)
A good silent movie
The circus was my first silent film and to my surprise I really enjoyed it. Seeing how humor has changed over the last eighty years really somewhat saddened me.
This film reminds me of a truly simpler time. I found the relationship between Charlie Chaplin and the ring leader truly funny. Although Charlie is a very clumsy character he is also very funny.
This film was made nearly seventy years before I was born and it amazes me how the comedy still stands up and how you can even have a comedy with a single word. I can relate this form of comedy to Loony Toons or Bugs Bunny.
