Punch-Drunk Love (2002)
can pass this one by, but watched it twice!
I had to see it twice just in case I missed some deeper plot, NOT! This One seems like Adam Sandler took a more serious acting role and is the STAR as a somewhat autistic or slightly mentally unstable business suit wearing individual. Then, falls in love in a quirky way. SOUND VAGUELY PLAIN? SO GOES THE MOVIE THEME. But, not without some snares along the way, like the Phone-sex sequence. The rest of the cast I didn't follow much. The cast seemed to support the main character Barry Egan, Adam Sandler's role as the oddball business gawky guy who takes up a date with Emily Watson's role as Lena Leonard. Guess love at first sight. Well, NOT MUCH PUNCH to this dark psycho-comedy-romance for sure. It's fine if you have the movie playing in the background while you attend to cleaning out your computer's hard drive of bad files. 6/10 just being nice because I like Sandler.
Staying Alive (1983)
Is This a Same Ole Song and Dance Movie?...
First of all, superstar like Sylvester Stallone only does a fair job as director., Ha! sadly BIG mistake, but gets quickie uncredited cameo spot. Patrick Swayze also has a uncredited cameo as a dancer (kind of ironic because Cynthia Rhodes would go on to star in his big "dance" movie - "Dirty Dancing") Though, the script seems jagged throughout, the music and dancing carry this movie to make it bearable to see. Travolta is in his YOUTHFUL PHYSICAL FORM SHOWS FINE DANCE MOVES with Finola Hughes and Cynthia Rhodes with some romantic triangle between them both as he makes his debut on Broadway musical. The acting across the board well is OK. Maybe if this was better scripted and directed, would bring the rating to a 6.5 or better. 4/10 overall.
Singin' in the Rain (1952)
Brilliant! One Of Top 5 Comedy Musicals All Time
Just watched on TCM, As always Gene Kelly's magical tap/dancing moves are
fantablous! especially, Donald O''Connor stoled the show with his moves, won himself an award. Nominated, infamous director Stanley Donen, actors Gene
Kelly, Jean Hagen, and composer Lennie Hayton (Musical Score) guess Arthur
Freed producer/composer missed out, anyway the music is great not much to
say as a storyline. After all, it's a film about "making it big" within Hollywood all the while the main character Gene Kelly secret affection is for the up and
coming actress character Kathy Seldon played by now infamous Debbie
Reynolds who was barely twenty years old at the time, but don't quote me. I
don't blame character Don Lockwood (Kelly) trading in Lina Lamont, played by
Jean Hagen (who to her credit, played the dumb SQUEAKY talking blonde) was
the on screen partner to Lockwood who CAYNT stand Lina! (she can not say
can't) I HATE squeaky voices! I used words I HATE( phrase Jack Nickolson used in
"As Good As it Gets," a great comedy flick) in the affirmative. (aside my pet peeves) All in all, a great just a FUN entertaining musical, just happens to be one of the TOP FIVE COMEDY MUSICALS ever! Need I say more. 10/10
Till the End of Time (1946)
A Worthy Watch For Post WWII Era
Briefly, though not rated as high as "The Best Years Of Our Lives" it has more plain and simple feel to it. Dorthy McGuire (Pat Ruscomb) is underrated IMHO, but did fine acting role different than her lighthearted parts. Other major actor Robert Mitchum (William Tabeshaw) does ok since I'm not one of his fans, as
one of the three marines returning from war to civilian life. The other two marines returning to civilian life were Bill Williams (Perry Kincheloe) and the one falls in love with Dorthy's role Pat Ruscomb is Guy Madison (Cliff Harper). All three give ideas what they are going to do with the lives. Guess history repeats itself were now in the same similar mode with the Iraq War many to return after IMHO a
bizarre war to adjust to civilian life for some. A worthy watch but not in my dvd collection. 7/10.
Easter Parade (1948)
A FINE EASTER MUSICAL CLASSIC OF THE TIME
Presently, this Technicolor classic only seems to only be seen on Turner Classic Movies(TCM). Ashame, the networks putting on less traditional films not relative to the holiday doing away with America's traditional values once cherished.
Where's the movie classics, like "Ben-Hur"? To make again, would cost too
much, aside America's values drastically changed (for the worst). TCM cable
channel commercial free carries theses type of films still. Worst is the new
generation misses out on knowing America's great film making with a traditional moral message to boot, not seen on networks anymore. Thanks to Technology,
special effects etc.. one can simulate some hard old fashion acting from human minds, hearts and not computers to generate a prefabricated acting to meshed
with a live actor's part so may be less work even for stunt actors role. Like the calculator, if one still doesn't know their simple math, one is out of luck getting the correct result. Anyway, Fine Classic Easter Musical Film great cast, Judy Garland, Fred Astaire, Ann Miller, and Peter Lawford as main characters,
especially Infamous Russian composer Irvin Berlin most memorable songs
MAKES this a classic. 8/10. (they don't make 'em like they use to, but the yesems etc.. we can do without)
Holiday Inn (1942)
A Holiday Musical Classic Of The Forties
Considering the times this film was made( WWII Era) in the early forties, America needed another "Feel Good Escape Film," sentimental holiday classic hits by the infamous Irving Berlin Russian composer, making it a classic musical during the holidays. It's the basic showbiz love triangle story between the classy dancer Fred Astaire, a fine actress Marjorie Reynolds, and the famous crooner Bing
Crosby, which Irving Berlin won Best Song Award. MOSTLY A MUSICAL WITH A
TOUCH OF ROMANTIC COMEDY SENTIMENT THROWN IN. This isn't
"Sleepless In Seattle," nor "When Harry Met Sally." Mostly dancing and singing between Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire though out the film are the high points, story line is fair. It's a fine musical classic of the times. Without Irving Berlin's music, it's really a 5/10. After all, this was Berlin's idea. (just a side note). The 4th main character is actress by Virginia Dale, it's no wonder she doesn't have much of Filmography compared to the famous Ginger Rodgers, a Classic Dancer/ Actress. Ashame, she didn't play the love triangle part of Marjorie Reynolds which did a fine job, but NO GINGER RODGERS. BTW, I like Gene Kelly's overall
dancing/acting better than Fred Astaire anytime, I respectfully give credit to one of the finest dancers of tap. Glad the black face stuff is done away with, Praise the Lord! Overall 7/10.
You've Got Mail (1998)
A SEQUEL TO SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE?
Nothing like original concept as in Sleepless in Seattle, where a radio program is used to bring two to meet for a possible relationship. In this movie it's over the Internet by email, You've Got Mail! is this an actual sequel to Sleepless in
Seattle? Aside from that, their chemistry continues between Hanks and Ryan in their romantic comedy roles. MEG IS TOP OF HER GAME AS HER TYPICAL
CUTESY PLAYFUL, BUT LOVABLE ROLE. HANKS DOES HIS MORE CEREBRAL CLEVER MANNER OF COMEDY ROLE. If you LOVED Sleepless,
you will LIKE "You've Got Mail." Its worthy of a least a 6.8 rating. CUTE but not original. BTW, what happened to trying to hook up a potential friend, lover, life long partner in LIVE SITUATIONS FACE TO FACE? oh well, after all we shop,
research, chat, play games, and practically run our households on the web. So why not just stay at all the time be a slave to the BEAST666? Now regular
churchgoers are getting lazy, press few clicks to stream a church service only to wind up getting married by computer clergyman, Reverend Clarence your
reliable computer voice. Ha! Ha! Ha!
The Best Years of Our Lives (1946)
TOP 10 MOVIES ALL TIME BEFORE WOMAN'S LIB TEAR JERKER
First I missed the beginning plus many reviews detailed names, acting and
directing, WON WORTHY OF AWARDS THIS CLASSIC WWI AMERICA FILM.
Briefly, it's about the the PERSONAL lives of WWI veterans with some anti war sentiment Pro American viewed one actor put it, "America should have not gone to war to Fight the Wrong People," Ironically, nothing has changed in America as we see with IRAQ WAR America is divided over the war. Main point is the
lives with GETTING ADJUSTED TRYING TO GET A JOB, GET MARRIED TRY
TO FORGET AND LIVE CIVILIAN LIVES IN A QUAINT HOME TOWN WHERE
WOMEN WERE SO RESPECTIVE TOWARDS GUYS, THOSE THAT FOUGHT
THUS WOOED THEM TO THEIR LIKING FOR HOLY MATRIMONY with some
TWIST along the way. Yes, not just marriage regardless of religious background "MARRIAGE" was considered Sacred before God and Man. I personally not
familiar of the actors but did FINE ACTING ROLES though movie seemed slow
paced, compared to movie making today. But, for one key actress role was as
more independent leave her husband to find her own niche in life. Most parts
were WOMEN IN TRADITIONAL HOMEMAKING ROLES. Boy, nothing better in
a marriage keeping the Flame of LOVE MAKING going and being served with
HOME COOKED MEALS by your "better half female wife." Some us guys don't
need lavished gifts gadgets boy toys like their classy cars high- tech televisions/ computer/audio systems while that may be costly and sterile, I''ll trade that in for loyal faithful submissive practical loving homemaker any day of the week. Hmm! home baked Apple Pie ala mode! This movie IS a 10 in my book, since missed
beginning seem slow and a little uneven, but that may be not seeing the usually setup from the beginning. IN THE LEAGUE OF "IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE"
caliber, without holiday flavor.10/10. As a traditionalist, yes the is "The Best Years of Our lives!"
The Passion of the Christ (2004)
The More Accurate Version on Passion of The Christ
Since my review had another chance to get to see in pictorial format. One don't have to have "The Faith" only echoing some seen screenings are correct so far. I was awestruck with accuracy the truth of a man how he sacrificed to point of such agony none of us would go to such lengths for the love of mankind.
BTW, though I didn't know James Caviezel's work, I thought he did a find job depicting Christ IMHO. BTW, those more interested in where Mel Gibson got his inspiration for this movie is from a $18.00 book from TAN publishers called, "The Dolorous Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ," based on visions from Anne Catherine Emmerich a Roman Catholic visionary. Just to give some perspective of the background. Also, this is not bashing out Jewish brethren. It's that at THAT TIME they were the spiritual and political authority of the THAT time, with Romans influence as well. Hope this helps us all in these unsettled life threatening times, learning to love one no matter what the cost! I gave it a 9/10 since Christ being resurrected with nail print on his hand for Thomas to see, but I doubt all the scars over Christ's Body were /are shown in the Risen Glorified Heavenly Seated King Jesus Christ where He is ever present.
Some Like It Hot (1959)
A Classic But Not Best Comedies of All time
Just briefly I agree this is overrated, Jack Lemon really comes through as far as comedies go.(As Always). Marilyn Monroe just because she's a bombshell I
really don't rate her a classic actress as say a Kathrine Hepburn quality. Tony Curtis does well for his part, I never cared any for his movies. Overall 6.8/10
On the Town (1949)
TRULY BEST MUSICAL 1949
Everybody covered fine details of this post WWII MGM film. I agree fine acting by "Mr. Blue Eyes," Frank Sinatra as a sailor, was at his best. I just want to add not much mentioned, or most notoriety is the late Ann Miller passed away
January, 22,2004 as of this review. She was just a classic act in acting and
kudos for very best dancing, she really shined until mid-fifties when WWII era was passing less musicals were made. From director Stanley Donen to best
dancer Gene Kelly in my book, was great! (aside of Fred Astaire comes close
too) Kelly is was one of the three sailors on their leave to PAINT THE TOWN
RED!! Where else? NEW YORK! the third main sailor was Jules Munshin, did
well. TRUE DELIGHT 10/10 with Sinatra I agree overall 8.5/10 98 minutes
WORTH WATCHING!!!
Meet the Parents (2000)
NOT A CLASSIC OF COMEDIES BUT STILL FUNNY
I too an a Robert De Niro fan who is plays the father parent (Jack Byrnes) of daughter (Pam Byrnes) Teri Polo. While Blythe Danner, a fine complement wife
parent (Dina Byrnes). Ben Stiller as (secret Jewish) boyfriend (Greg Focker) to WASP daughter, wind up staying at her parents home. Like "Father of the Bride" to some degree, but variety of oddball events between the father Jack Byrnes
De Niro (ex-CIA employee) critical of boyfriend Greg Focker's moves is
hilarious. Stiller fine acting stands out, rest of cast fairs well too. Must See! Not bad movie made in year 2000 relaxed morality of the new century. 7.5/10
When Harry Met Sally... (1989)
MODERN CULTURE CHANGED, THIS IS A ROMANTIC COMEDY CLASSIC
Sort of a follow up of "Annie Hall." classic based in New York, also can be used as a holiday film as well a dating film. First, fine directing by Rob Reiner, uses documentary couples which are SO CUTE AND COMICAL as a segue way to
the next segment as story develops. It's mainly the relationship between Harry Burns played by funny Billy Crystal and the intelligent/dizzy beautiful yet
versatile Meg Ryan played Sally Albright, a becoming classic actress should get Kathrine Hepburn type scripts made her Best Actress of 20th century. IMHO.
Also, as a secondary developing relationship is Jess played by Bruce "Bruno"
Kirby Jr. and Marie played by Carrie Fisher which become best friends with
Harry and Sally perspectively, do fine supporting acting roles. I believe the first half of 20th century some movies gave respect of reflecting the culture, when
sleeping with your friend then love of your life was taboo, like in "It Happened One night" pushing moral envelope was "An Affair To Remember" and classic
similar throwback fine romantic comedy "Sleepless in Seattle." Both received
FAIR ratings ironically. My heartthrob Meg Ryan stars in it, is well becoming a classic actress as well comic/actor Tom Hanks. The moral issue once called
fornication, now is normal lifestyle for most, "When Harry Mets Sally" is a classic fairs with "Annie Hall," should be in Top 250 IMDb List. My folks of 1920s stayed with moral traditional role as orthodox catholics, when choosing a lifelong
partner. Religion played significant role from dating to marriage, unlike
Hollywood stars past lived like today's standards. Even though influential,
Hollywood is not the blame for the moral culture changes, we baby boomers
turned away from Orthodox to Reform (Rebellion). Moral issue aside, one
intensely memorable moments, was Sally (Meg Ryan) fake public orgasm in the
diner as another patroness sitting by mesmerized," I want what she's having." 11/10 for that segment. All in all, A Romantic Comedy Classic! Both male and
females will enjoy. Oh Harry! (wish I was playing Harry with Sally. (Meg is one of my Favorite Hollywood Hotties)

The Impossible Years (1968)
Decent Father/Daughter Movie of the 60's
Well, those not familiar with actor David Niven film work of worthy of awards is his role in a Oscar Award nominated 1958 "Separate Tables" psychological drama great cast American-British main actors American Burt Lancaster, Rita Hayward, British Deborah Kerr David Niven which won Best Actor as well in a romantic comedy "The Moon Is Blue." Also, appeared in latter part of "The Pink Panther" film series after Peter Sellers died in 1980 called " The Trail of the Pink Panther" "The Curse of the Pink Panther" last, which Niven was terminally ill. along with these movie flops, famous director Blake Edwards tried re-resurrect series. This father & daughter theme film does not measure up with others from "Fiddle on the Roof" to "Magnolia" or "Traffic." This situation comedy Niven plays a teaching psychiatrist (Jonathan Kingsley) at local university married to wife (Alice Kingsley) played by Lola Albright, have two daughters, oldest (Linda) played by Christina Ferrare and her sister (Abbey) played by Darlene Carr. Also, surprised me was Ozzie Nelson as an adviser/neighbor (Dr.Herbert Fleischer) who tries to help Niven's role as father, the difficulty of raising the two teens especially one of them. Geez, enough to GIVE YOU GRAY HAIR or GO BOLD! Yikes! Consider this was revolutionary sixties.1963 "Take Her She's Mine" is similar 6/10 as well.
The Santa Clause (1994)
Not Your Christmas Holiday Classic but FUNNY
I think Tim Allen since " Home Improvement" days been nil in acting in box office blockbusters. This one is best to date, though funny isn't saying much of acting career. Anyway, I agree with other comments that this is not traditional holiday classic, that's why rating barely MAKES 6/10 as voting. Can anyone for the life of me, as a kid I never seen a Christmas/holiday movie REVEALING Santa Claus,
in this case Tim Allen. As a boy, I really believed their was a REAL Santa. Mom & Pop did fine job keeping that child fantasy alive until I was 8 when I peaked in their closet only to see gifts. Then, bummer, so to keep getting the toys I wanted MILKED it until 11 yrs old. Well, that was one up on me then the mystery was all gone, sort of similar of falling in love the first time. Wish Hollywood would make a Santa Claus film for us like to keep being childlike alive by NOT REVEALING SANTA CLAUS IS DAD. 7/10 for Tim Allen humor in this 90 version of
Christmas. Still cherish old classics even though not focus is not on Santa
Claus, but THE REAL MEANING OF CHRISTMAS, the spiritual aspect giving to
others in need, and honoring A Child Was Born Jesus Christ. HO HO HO this
one is funny like"The Grinch" movie is dark with Jim Carrey in it, same rating too
A Christmas Carol (1938)
Memory Lane Holiday Classic Of The 30's
Wow! How I remember as a child of the 1960's I was glued to this classic. Why this old man" scrooge" felt the meaning greed more important over the joy of the meeting a need, TILL TAKEN BY SURPRISE by ghostly visits, greatly have a
profound effect on him. Reginald Owen plays Ebenezer Scrooge, wonder how
it would of played out, originally the role was for the great Lionel Barrymore. All in all, a fine dark sentimental holiday B&W film that's been remade over many times, since couple may be better, depends on perspective signs of the times. I think the older ones carry an innocence that new holiday films are more "in your face" leaving less room for fantasy or imagination, BAH HUMBUG! 7/10 Goody
Risky Business (1983)
TEEN VERSION OF PRETTY WOMAN
Cruise at 20 in this film catapulted his stardom, still has that baby face
handsome image. This sex comedy came after the funny "Fast Time at
Ridgemont High," which rates better in my opinion. It's simple sex comedy
Cruise plays Joel Goodson, a rich high school teen having a week by himself
while parents away for the week. WHADDA WEEK! Tom Cruise did fine acting
job nominated for Globe Award for this movie, beginning good things to come
for Cruise. It was a nice throwback early 80's sentiment but RISKY since
President Reagan was bringing patriotism image since everything was being in
imported losing American manufacturing jobs, wink, wink, (jorge dubya similar role as prez. now). We need comedy when economy goes in down spin.
Throughout 20th century, Hollywood provided our anesthetic to numb our pain
how bad things really are. Back then, was long lines at the gas pump. Anyway, this is a worthy movie to RISK watching. 7.5/10.
A Christmas Carol (1999)
CLOSER TO NOVEL NOT LIKE CLASSIC ORIGINAL 1951
I was disappointed that even though British flavor is suppose to resemble the original, Patrick Stewart performance as "SCROOGE" done well for actors of the nineties. This version sadly did nothing for me, one must consider everything, from director to all the casts. Another remake gee whiz how many remakes we
need. Even IMDb list many versions. Unless remake can stand on it's own merit giving Oscar winning performances, STICK TO ORIGINAL!! Outside of fine
acting by Stewart overall 5/10 I enjoyed the original. BAH HUMBUG!!!!!!
A Little Romance (1979)
WOW HOW I MISSED THIS BEAUTY IN 1979
I never heard this one, PURE TRUE ESSENCE of TEEN ROMANCE and LOVE. Excuse me, I didn't do any research to add what already others commented. It Is amazing cute romantic that grows into love. Wish had more these type movies
made today. I too relate as a male somewhat like Daniel played by Thelonious
Bernard falls for Lauren played by fabtanistic Diane Lane. Only wish I was 14 again. A MUST SEE! especially with the special one you feel connected with. AHHH SOOO SWEET ROMANCE ! 9/10 not 10 cause it's not me as Daniel.
Apocalypse Now (1979)
THE 2001 VERSION APOCALYPSE NOW 1979
This was more diverse though times seem slow but more DISTURBING! Well,
the movie based on Oscar award original added footage though not really
significant, still made more of a diverse dimension, thus more likely how
realistically disturbing bizarre, Vietnam war was. The complaints of the playboy bunnies added footage was typical of a USO Bob Hope Entertainment gave
more moral boost to an already downtrodden depressed US troops felt hung out to dry, by US Gov. since the USA was so divided over Vietnam, seemed more of
a political war at expense of American troops, lost the war to the communists anyway. Oddly, great cast from excellent director Francis Ford Coppola to cast Martin Sheen( Capt. Willard lead his crew seek out Kurtz),Marlon ( went loony colonel role Kurtz) Brando among other prominent actors had difficulty
throughout film making, based on reviews I read on the original 1979 version, like had their own mini bizarre Vietnam experience. All in all, this
semidocumentary/ war film depicted the diverse yet dark side of humans when
hope seems light years away. 9/10 A Must see over again, WARNING! get
plenty of rest & protein bars to hang in on longer version 203min. This WAS
Vietnam NOT ABOUT Vietnam.
The Bishop's Wife (1947)
OLDIE BY GOODY CHRISTMAS CLASSIC
Just wanted add my two cents, though this often missed movie was remade with
Whitney Houston and Denzel Washington, FAIR in comparison to the original.
Only because I think of of the times with more limited film making techniques, plus times were MORE innocent overall as an American. "The Preacher's Wife,"
or "City of Angels" were not up to par as "It's A Wonderful Life." Since it dealt with classy Cary Grant as the angel intervening human relationship. This Classic is on par with "It's A Wonderful Life," many like it. 10/10 BRAVO!
Cape Fear (1962)
TRUE TO ITS TITLE GREAT THRILLER CLASSIC OF 60'S
This was a amazingly hold on to your seat thriller that the modern thrillers
modeled after IMHO. Great acting by Robert Mitchum (ex-con out get revenge
on wholesome family) especially. Gregory Peck was supposed to be the top
billing actor in this chiller thriller (as prosecution lawyer), but Mitchum seemed take the cake his role while in prison bid his time studying law based when he got released was able to challenge the police first time they took him in for questioning. The best part is that fact that this was still B&W without modern film making techniques more scary effects to the movie, like "Nightmare On Elm
Street," Scream," built their successes on. This 60's classic, relied more on actors skills to create characters depth and great music score made it more
realistic. The remake with the great Robert De Niro as ex-con psychotic really must of studied Mitchums role added more PASSION to the role. Both original
and remake stand on their own MERIT. One keeps in mine the older movies in
my opinion, were more limited as far as film making, yet JUST AS GRIPPING as
remake. Remake since I seen first, 10x over more scary. One word sum up this
classic is in the title, FEAR!!!! Telly Savalas also in this cast, not too familiar with rest of cast though good acting roles, nor J.Lee Thompson as director but did fine job with this classic. 9/10 I give it, don't miss the original!
New York, New York (1977)
A Fine Film! Thinking Of Showbiz As A Career?
Though as many mentioned this movie was not Scorsese best but IMHO worthy one to see especially if your ASPIRING MUSICIAN DESTINED FOR SHOWBIZ
Despite the so called bad and good parts of acting on the lead roles of the
GREAT Robert De Niro as Jimmy Doyle sax player big band era, bad name for
Italian actor, and Liza Minnelli as Francine Evans as singer, both struggling in "making it" in showbiz very realistic of the time plus struggling in making their relationship work in hopes of a love and a stable marriage, eventually, or do they?. All in all, fine film by a excellent director Marin Scorsese . I give it a 7/10.
In Cold Blood (1967)
IRONIC EX-CONS RUNNING FROM LAW AND INNER DEMONS
First, with the recent ironically Robert Blake murder wife case tying in this crime drama of two ex-cons Robert Blake as Perry Smith and Scott Wilson as Dick
Hickok as they botch up robbery killing of Midwest innocent Clutter family seems unbelievable truthful.
Blake fights losing battle of demons of past SO RELEVANT IRONICALLY similar to recent BLAKE TRAIL. Ashame, oneself suffered abuse childhood that bound to
show up later in life or on the screen, usually don't seek psyche help. One review I said at times, acting roles reflect actors real life experiences. FINE CLASSIC 1967 especially of ROBERT BLAKE, his debut acting role age 5 1938 as in" The
Little Rascals," matures in fine performance so surreal truthful of Blake's life in this classic crime drama. Fine black and white cinematography by Conrad Hall
best director Oscar award nominated/win Richard Brooks. 8/10
