Griff the Invisible (2010)
Where the impossible become the possible
Griff The Invisible is a lovely story about Griff (Ryan Kwanten – True Blood) and Melody (Maeve Dermody – Beautiful Kate) who live in their own solitary worlds. They come together when they discover they are a like with their passion for the impossible.
Griff is a quiet character who gets teased at his office day job. When the sun goes down, he becomes a hero by saving people from random attacks in the night. He goes on a mission to create an invisibility cloak and succeeds. Who would have thought you could make this possible with two simple ingredients. But I'm not going to tell you, you'll have to wait until you see the movie.
Melody is a loner and an experimental scientist. She's into physics and tries her hardest to walk through walls as she figures out that there is all this space between matter, so it must be possible. I actually got goose bumps when her hand imprinted in the wall when she first succeeds, hair raising stuff.
This is a true Australian style film with lots of humour and great Aussie actors; Patrick Brammall, Toby Schmitz, Marshall Napier and Heather Mitchell.
I felt so many different emotions, some I'm not familiar with. I think because they touched a nerve with me i.e. physics and different dimensions, it got me thinking, as I often wonder about this stuff. It was a truly beautiful moment when they realised their uniqueness made them the same. They could relate to each other and communicate on the same level. It is just like in reality, when you meet someone amazing when you least expect it and you both get each other, it's magical.
The Company Men (2010)
A movie many could relate too
This was a great drama/comedy. Even though there were a few sad bits, they didn't dwell on it; they got the point across and moved on. I liked this; otherwise I would have sat there crying the whole movie.
The movie is about a big company that downsizes to increase their share market and bring in a ludicrous salary for head honchos. Hundreds of dedicated workers got fired, even the ones who had worked their butts off for 30 years. Bobby finds it extremely tough, trying to look for work as nothing is available. Having lived with high expenses; Porsche, massive house, contents with all the trimmings, he has to make some serious sacrifices. Bobby has to 'suck it up', work with his brother in law and become a laborer just to put food on the table.
I'm sure many of us have been in this predicament, where everything is going fine and then boom, your whole world is turned upside down. I think lots of people will be able to relate to this story. Life is like a box of chocolates, sometimes you get the ones you like and sometimes you get the ones you don't like.
Elle s'appelait Sarah (2010)
Sarah's Key was a powerful movie
I really liked the way the movie was shot, they went back and forth from the journalist's journey which was in the now and then shot to the people being interviewed and then we saw what happened in the past; 1942. This was a good break up as I thought the whole movie was going to be in the past, therefore I would have cried the whole time and would probably of walked out, as it would have been too much to bare.
I also loved how the movie was in French and English, the subtitles was a powerful touch. Kristin Scott Thomas is just beautiful, she is an amazing actress and I love watching her in every performance. I love the French language, I could listen to that all day long, even though I have no idea what they are saying. If you like your SBS movie's this movie is definitely for you. Gilles Paquet-Brenner nailed the cinematography; I guess that's also why this movie was so great.
