Koi... Mil Gaya (2003)
Hrithik Roshan is getting himself confused.
The best part of this movie is that although it might not be that appealing to an intellectual movie audience both in India and abroad, the movie had garnered a good box office returns.I haven't seen this movie neither would I like to but there is something I felt the leading actor ( Roshan Jr. ) of the film has done wrong. Before I say anything I would like to convey one thing that what I am commenting here is purely on the basis of the hype media had created, interviews of the people involved in the film ( I have read/seen ),film review and the audience reaction ( not forgetting my family members ).The film dealt famously with an alien and its about relationship between a short IQ boy with the alien.Hrithik Roshan had said in many of his interviews that he acted in KMG by indulging back in his childhood, remembering the psycholgical depths he experienced while he was a child. Now that is something which is all wrong.Method acting and that too in a subject like this ? !Roshan Jr. had earlier chosen films of entertaining values whether it be Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon,Na Tum Jaano Na Hum,Mujhse Dosti Karoge or Kahoo Na Pyar Hai ( not that I got entertained by any of them just that I specifically mean entertaining by their subjects ).Its OK that Roshan Jr. had worked hard to implement Method style acting in his film...but had he performed as an 'actor who has to entertain ( Like Sharukh and what he had done earlier )the justice to the role would have been good.I am thorougly dissapointed by the film literacy this country has and by the people who head the film industry. There it seems people are miles and miles away from artistic values and education.May be I am wrong or may be I am right I don't know but hope I know it better
Kairee (1999)
One of the finest movies regarding childhood.
Amol Palekar, the director of Kairee a.k.a. The Raw Mango had earlier been popularly known for his comic roles in the hillarious comedies Naram Garam and Golmaal. As far as I know his works as a director also came in limelight for creating films on some very extraordinary but humane plots.I saw the movie Kairee on one of the regional channels in Uttar Pradesh,India where I live. The movie is about the growing up of a child in village and her relationships with different people specially her aunt Taani ( dynamically potrayed by debutant Shilpa Navalkar ).The script of the film is very powerful considering the fact that it has all the human ingredients pressed in a single rope. The landscapes in the film are used excellently as not only they add the touch of reality but also,I assure could be appealed by anyone from the world.Stage and film actor Manoj Bajpai once said that films are a director's medium,I sincierly hope that he should have seen this film because the performances by the actors is overwhelming and they steal the high points of the film from under the nose of their collegues. The film has the best products from the Maharastrian stage namely Mohan Gokhale,Atul Kulkarni and Sonali Kulkarni ( in a small role )and it only adds another cause to see the film. But if one performance which stand out it is that of Navalkar ( Taani Aunt )she is just fabulous not to forget the acting of Yogita Deshmukh as 'the girl' whose story the film is.
Kaagaz Ke Phool (1959)
Classics Of Indian Cinema.
Although the Guru Dutt masterpiece failed miserably at the box office it remains till today as one of the most critically appreciated films of Indian cinema. The very fact that the next film Guru Dutt created i.e. Chaudhvin ChaudhvinKa Chand ( Full day Moon ) became the biggest blockbuster giving us the hint how he knew about the audience of the time.Talking about the film the very first scene carries so much depth that the rest of the movie seems more like an era which would be memorised for a long time. The image of an old man pushing the door ( of the film studio ) and a sad gloomy background score involved me in the movie like none other Bollywood film had ever done before.Kaagaz Ke Phool ( Paper Flowers ) is the story of film director Suresh Sinha who is estranged from his wife and daughter. He falls in love with his 'discovery' Shanti whom he grooms to act in films.Sinha's carrer soon declines and he realises the ephemeral nature of fame and success. The lightning of the film is world class and so is the cinematography.I feel it is basically these two factors which plays the most important role in terming Kaagaz Ke Phool an Indian Classic ( " I Feel " ).Witness the scenes where Sinha enters his studio with a fractured leg and sits down on the chair in the dark room or when Sinha smoking his cigar talks to Shanti in the initial parts of the film.Kaagaz Ke Phool is great and so is Guru Dutt.It won't be any euphemism if I term him the Orson Welles of Indian cinema or Orson Welles the Guru Dutt of American.
