Till (I) (2022)

A genuine story that needs to be told.
2 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The direction that the USA is headed lately, we need this film. We need Whoopi Goldberg. We need Danielle Deadwyler. We need Jalyn Hall. We need Emmett Till.

The sometimes overt racism present in the current American government is all too often overshadowed by the reoccurring media panic over Donald Trump. Imagine if you will, a time of Jim Crow laws; ie openly racist governors, African Americans being told to pick cotton for peanuts(which they invented by the way) & move from their seat on the bus or train. None of this was overshadowed by anything, it was outright accepted. I can remember a time when I asked my history professor "wouldn't people have been shocked by Mein Kampf when it was released?" And he said, more or less, "that would've been on par with the views at the time". I never ever ever forgot that.

I struggle to watch a beautiful white woman attempt to shoot an African American boy simply because he whistled at her and he's black. It doesn't seem real, but to Emmett & his family, it was.

This movie so wonderfully portrays a grieving mother and a civil rights leader that most people, not for lack of information, just don't consider one. They should now.

From the acting, which is brilliant, to the writing & the use of spectacular lettering in the title, to the lighting which does nothing but improve the movie, specifically at the scene where Mamie is outside, grieving her son, talking to her cousin, the sun is shining on such a somber occasion & you know Emmett is watching over her from heaven. Beautiful.

If you ever want to watch a movie that brings a smile to your face, and brings joy to your heart from beginning to end, this isn't for you, but if you want to watch a movie that will help you understand the intricacies of racism in America, past and present, as well as subvert your attention from the realities of today for 2 hours, then this is the movie for you.

Brilliant movie!

Like Allyson's car, this movie is clunky & needed an excuse for us to view it.

Warning: Spoilers
He's dead. He's finally dead. At least his body is; his soul may be alive somewhere, but I digress. He's dead.

The beginning of the movie, to me; was clunky & almost irrelevant. I understand Corey's evil intentions were transferred to him by Michael & his environment; ie his psycho mom & being bullied as he was; (the old nature vs nurture debate reared it's head once again). I also understand that Michael is human. I also understand that the human condition is fragile, yet bonded by its environment like Corey's or like Michael's.

This movie & its series has always been about a person's milieu & about how it can change a person into a monster or prevent them from becoming one.

This movie & its series has also always been about containment. Let me explain. The containment of Michael's soul & of evil itself came into question this entire movie. Does he transfer the evil to Corey, does Corey transfer it to the bum in the park? Etc etc. That containment aspect holds deep, so deep that Loomis can feel it in the afterlife. It's the containment of oneself and the preservation of one's own being that surrounds the Haddonfieldien air of this movie. Laurie's struggle to contain her thoughts by writing them out on her memoirs, Corey's struggle to contain his emotions when he accidentally kills the child he's babysitting, Allyson's struggle to fit in after her parents died & grandma went psychotic etc etc.

Overall, slow, clunky & could've been cut down to an hour or 30 min movie. 4/10. Would've been 7 or 8 if I hadn't been totally convinced that Corey was going to be the shape for the entire movie after Michael tried to strangle him. That would've wholly ruined the experience.

I love Jaimie Lee Curtis in everything she ever does. That helps.

A more than worthy sequel.
26 September 2022
A mix of the first movie's British humour, American classical acting by Glenn Close trying hard to be as British as possible & fun. Need I say more? Anyone who's rated this movie 4 or below has either never seen it or has seen it & isn't very nostalgic.

Eric Idle as Waddlesworth the talking parrot commits to an extremely underrated performance; funny, poignant & overall entertaining for the whole family.

This is the movie that reminded me how much I love that classic British humour, including Tim McInnerny's almost Blackadder-style humor borrowing his style from former Blackadder alum Rowan Atkinson. It's dry but in a British dry which is lovable!

Trust me, if you liked 101 Dalmatians, you'll love this movie. And you're a child at heart who loves cute animals, family movies & warmth, you'll be more than satisfied at the conclusion of this gem.

Keegan Michael Key & Tom Hanks shine. (Oh, you're e telling me they're not the main focus of the movie?)
14 September 2022
Tom Hanks tried his best (as always) Keegan Michael Key is brilliant (as always) Jiminy sounds as close to the original as one can ask but even he comes off as campy.

The movie stunk around them.

The movie comes off as a rip-off of a classic Disney movie, not a Disney movie itself. Poop jokes, Chris Pine jokes, trying too hard to be good, it's all been done before.

The only saving grace in this movie is that Tom Hanks and Keegan Michael Key are in it. Those two could recite the New York City phone book and make it a broadway musical.

A while back, Robin Williams pondered why movies about the ancient Romans all had actors with British accents & not Italian. I ponder, in 2022, why this movie, set in Italy, had a mix of Italian, American, British (& whatever Jiminy is) accents.

Not much else to say really is there? It's not good.

Excellent movie. TRUST ME. IGNORE THE HATERS

Warning: Spoilers
Long story short: she's blind, she's a thief and she's pissed off. Short story long: I loved it. The main character is so unique in a way I've never seen before. In the way that she actually joins the bad guys for a while. Her resolve through thick and thin; whether being stuck outside alone or inside with dangerous criminals is phenomenal!

Do not skip this treasure.

If you don't understand the intricacies of the meaning behind movies(like me) you won't get it. I had to Google the meaning behind the movie. This movie is supposedly about technology & I barely understand how.

What I don't understand is the monkey. Does he serve a purpose? Is he in there because he represents the line between reality & fiction? It's never explicitly mentioned what the point of the monkey was.

Sure, I'm no cinephile, but I feel like this movie missed the mark & really had me marks confused than i should've been.

Decent movie. Decent pace. I was expecting her husband's death to manifest itself in her mind so that the whole ordeal with Sam was an illusion. But that's just me.

Not Whoopi's best. Not even Whoopi's worst. Just not good.
17 May 2022
The movie starts out great, but jumps around too much. It's kind of easy to follow, but easy enough that you get bored. The acting is great, the first half of the movie is great, but it just comes out like a bad soap opera storyline.

Predictable but exciting
13 March 2022
It's almost as if you know where the movie is going as it slowly drags on, but it's still exciting. Liam Neeson's performance is sharp and poignant as always, but the writing lacked a little je ne sais quoi. Overall, heartwarming, thrilling & altogether clear, but too predictable to be anything above 5. 5 would be stretching it.

The perfect parody
20 January 2022
The perfect parody of American politics & the perfect acting by J Law.

If you're looking for a really simple to follow movie that parodies mass media panic & the crap we're exposed to on a daily basis, this is it.

I get it. It's beautiful. And funny, to boot!

Just meh. Nothing special like the originals. More Blair Witch than anything. If you are looking for something to mimic the lustre of the original, you're out of luck.

Predictable & a joke

As I said, it's a joke of a movie. Disrespects the original from the jigsaw voice to the obviousness of the plot.

I wish we had a magic Wan to save us
9 June 2021
1. No James Wan = mediocre at best 2. I could've used more Dutch angles 3. I do approve of the 'in medias res' in the beginning. It sets the tone.

4. I do not approve of the story progressing too quickly.

5. I approve of the aging of characters wether by natural progression or makeup.

6. Not scary.

7. Overall it was barely worth paying $25 for.

2 1/2 / 10.

Poignant? Not so much? Stepping on egg shells is more like it.
3 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This movie starts out great, you get a sense of Whoopi Goldberg's dramatic acting chops, Mary Louis Parker's ability to mold characters into her own & Drew Barrymore's ability to be meh.

The ending is reminiscent of another movie based on a character with AIDS, Philadelphia. Where Philadelphia excels, this movie missed the mark. In fact this movie is like a mix up of the subplot in Sister Act 1 (which Whoopi started in), and a hint of the main plot of Philadelphia.

Overall I give it a 5.5/10 because it's a heartwarming story for the first 3/4 of the movie, but near the end it got to be kind of blasé and choosy.

It's simple. High octane music, dancing, acrobatics, history(albeit broken history) & circus.

This is it. Classic horror tropes, horror doesn't last long, but if you can name any Canadian Horror movie that had mainstream success...

It's so bad it's good
14 September 2020
Warwick Davis is a clever actor and this movie is complete trash... it's so trashy it's actually worth it! This movie is the Schrödinger's cat of movies. It's good and bad at the same time.

If you like terrible, campy horror movies, (for example Pinocchio's Revenge) you'll love this.

They stuck to their guns and it was an overload of fun
10 September 2020
Simply put, the staff stuck to what made P&F so entertaining after all these years. It's a genuine contender for the best original animated movie on Disney+. Bar none.

I consider myself progressive, but it's not The Muppets
5 August 2020
I love the Muppets. They're the only non-human guests on talk shows that are interviewed like humans. I've loved them since I was a kid & since then have grown a progressive attitude towards life. With that said, the new Muppets are unwatchable & Kermit's voice is too far gone from Steve or Jim to be anything halfway decent. Sorry. This show is a failure.

Unsatisfying but .. good I guess?
6 September 2019
Warning: Spoilers
First of all, I waited two years to see this movie and I'm thoroughly disappointed. The pacing was weird, the acting was a step above average at BEST and the scenes weren't really popping for me. I much preferred the 1st one.

I get it that the crew all had their encounters with IT and that they all burned their tokens, but it just didn't connect with me the way the first one did. 6 1/2 on a good day.

Beyond expectations!
22 June 2019
First of all, I was skeptical that this was going to be a campy, stupid little remake. I was wrong. Throughout the movie, I was arguing with myself on wether this may be the greatest movie in the series. I get it. This movie has the storyline of the first movie, the humour of the 2nd and 3rd movies, the cinematic style of the last 2 movies and the modern day problems of technology controlling us.

Mark Hamill as Chucky was excellent. The comedy was well written & well acted and the seriousness was sublime.

I think this movie would've done well as a child's movie if the horror elements were taken out. It was a movie beyond my expectations and I would love to see a sequel to this horror (or a PG movie without the horror as a separate series).
