Dum Laga Ke Haisha (2015)
Heartwarming and believable
It is never easy to make a movie about a topic like this. Past attempts have mutilated this kind of story so I was skeptical. One is happy to see that the characters (especially the leads) don't take unhealthy and impractical steps. Also there was no (unnecessary) villain waiting to take advantage of either of them.
Bhumi acted so believably and Ayushmann complemented her acting. These kind of movies hopefully should be eye openers to ignorant parent in Tier-2/Tier-3 cities and towns and not force their children into arranged marriages. It was just a luck break that the contest (in the end) resolved the marital issues; everybody does not get the same opportunities.
Hats off to the cast and Director for pulling off a superb movie.
Vehicle 19 (2013)
Decent attempt at making a movie differently
Plot was refreshing. Paul's acting specially toward the later half was good. The camera usage laced inside the car was very unique. Not seen many movies with this kind of attempt.
What screwed up the movie for me was the numerous logical errors right from start. Car company gives a rental without checking and cleaning out the vehicle? Why would a person in a new country rent a car...instead of using a taxi or Super Shuttle or whatever? In 2011 who does not have a smartphone which has GPS capability? Who does not come prepared to a new country without specific instructions to reach the US Embassy? Paul takes so much time to decide to spray his car. If you are a criminal on the run the first thing you would do is to ditch your vehicle and try using another. Or just hire a cab to get to US embassy.
A different Director would have made this a great movie. Sorry I cannot go beyond 5 in rating this movie
Edegarike (2012)
Outstanding movie
This theme is probably the first in Kannada.
Well directed, almost flawless acting. Very strong storyline. Only complaint is that the suspense should not have been broken/ revealed till the last scene....
This movie shows there is no shortage of themes if Kannada directors want to make a movie.
Hope this movie is an inspiration for future outstanding movies in Kannada.
I tried to find flaws but could not.
Good luck to Kannada movie world
Mouna Ragam (1986)
Well made movie but.......
I am a great fan of Mani Ratnam. Seen and enjoyed many of his movies. I just saw this movie today ( somehow missed it so many years) and loved it. While I see all reviewers have posted glorious and flattering reviews I thought I should post my observations about what was wrong or missing......none of that takes away the greatness of the movie though.
1. Revathi shows no sorrow about having lost her lover in the starting scenes. She is shown as an innocent fun loving girl in a traditional Tamil family somewhat rebellious but otherwise obedient typical daughter.
2. In 1986 most educated and employed parents had no more than 2 kids. And Revathi's parents had 4? Also most people would try for sons if they had daughters first...in this case the eldest one was already a boy.
3. For a Personnel Officer employed in a manufacturing organization in Delhi, CK ( the husband) was given a posh bungalow. That's hard to believe. And he had a car too....
4. Continuing from above, CK buys a train ticket for his wife when he should afford an air ticket in the last scenes....given that he lives a luxurious life in an apparently posh area in Delhi.
5. Revathi's parents travel from Madras to Delhi and don't bother to call their daughter ahead of time. That's unlike her very disciplined and strict father.
As I said earlier just saying Mani Ratnam is a great director not a perfectionist.
Tere Naal Love Ho Gaya (2012)
Refreshing female lead ( for a change in Bollywood)
Liked her acting big time. Bubbly and spontaneous.
Story was crappy and so was the acting from rest of the cast.
Her facial expressions reminded me of Sonali Kulkarni and Renuka Shahane from yesterday years.
As someone commented in an earlier post, she will go a long way in Bollywood with the right director(s)
Hope to see high quality movies with Genelia in the lead.
She should choose good roles and avoid crappy stories like in this movie
Wish her all the best
Tees Maar Khan (2010)
True colors
This was a perfect fit for Katrina. She is supposed to act a role of an aspiring film artist who does not have any skill. What a great fit. Wow.
As usual Akshay overacts.
The original Peter Sellers movie AFTER THE FOX has a well deserved 6.5. The Indians- hating Sellers must be laughing in his grave on is movie.
How difficult was it for Farah Khan to copy the original without deviating the storyline?
And lastly what is wrong with the Indian moviegoers....this movie made tons of money....
Jism (2003)
Terrible copy of a beautiful Hollywood movie
Disgusting says it all. Out of shape female lead, clueless acting by male lead. Just because they are involved with each other in real life they thought they would look natural in the movie? Just the opposite it seems. If the Producer wanted to make a sizzling soft porn he should have at least have the decency not to copy a Halle Berry movie for Gods sake. The songs are melodious but when you copy a Hollywood movie can we just avoid them? Disgrace for a Mahesh Bhatt movie. Strongly suggested NOT TO BE SEEN movie. I will stick to Hollywood movies. On the positive side I am pleased they shot this in Pondicherry. And not some studio. Or Mumbai for that matter
Lost in Translation (2003)
Unusual movie
It is always assumed in such movies, that a bored businessman and a lonely newlywed will have an (read sexual) affair. Coppola has done us all a great favor by steering away from this.
What really impressed me was the "real-life" like acting....the characters could be any of us.... no over-acting, just the right mix of emotions.
"Lost in translation" to me also meant ..... whatever feelings the characters had for each other, was "lost" forever...unable to being "translated".....
Also, the language confusions and accents of Orientals has been well handled; I would have like to see the Japanese confusion with American English though...
