Brokeback Mountain (2005)
intense
Twas a very intense movie. Heath Ledger seems to act well just by not acting very much...his brute-quality and deep, deep voice make an easy Ennis del Mar, one I can't see too many other actors being able to do. Gyllenhall was good enough as Jack Twist, too.
Jack's father was almost a caricature (for his brief scene) and Anne Hathaway just looks too plastic, too good-girl (though I think she acts just fine).
Gorgeous cinematography.
I like the quiet banter between the men the best.
Parts made me want to be a cowgirl, but not the rodeo type. The quiet, tough, dutiful, outdoorswoman type.
Mad Hot Ballroom (2005)
pretty good...
I don't know what I expected, but in this pic I thought there'd be more interesting stuff. The hype is there just because documentaries are the "in" thing at the moment, but this was too repetitive. Still, it's so cool to see documentarians turn slight facial twitches, personality characteristics, gestures etc. into caricature-like real-life humor through the subtle art of creative shooting and editing. Some of the public schools produced dancers with real talent! Sooo cute. I suppose I liked 'Spellbound's personal interest stories, whereas MHB profiled entire schools rather than kids, shifting the focus and the hoo-hah onto the dancing teachers, judges, and school principles. That detracted from the kids' awesome levels o' dedication and some of their struggles/stumbling blocks.
A good movie, though.
Mansfield Park (1999)
nice, jane austen'd like it, methinks
I think I just have a thing for Jane Austen movie adaptations of the non-teen-flick variety (although I did like "Clueless" as well), as I loved Emma with Gwyneth, Ewan et. al. But this movie rates up there among all movie preferences for me, and it's one I'll watch and rewatch eagerly. Frances O'Connor is talented, Johnny Lee is very cute (even if he is, as exhibited in Woody Allen's recent "Melinda and Melinda," not the world's greatest nor most believable actor), and I love the dreamy, swirly, slightly surreal cinematography. I think the subtle, reserved acting style helps to balance what is a fluffy, quite light and girlie story. See this one!
The Upside of Anger (2005)
bigtime ugh
Joan Allen has never been more annoying, I love each of the four girl actresses but was wary (rightfully) as soon as I discerned that they named a character "Popeye," and this movie's incessant cheap, RIDICULOUS and random plot twists made me go, "wait, what?" and "what the hell?" so often that a movie meant to be believable and heartrending ended up a really bad joke worthy of Mystery Science Theatre 3000. And wtf with the huge, glamorous house in "a Detroit suburb," the ridiculously perfect family dinners every single night...no home is this superficially perfect, even those with, as this family has, quite deep problems underneath.
A truly disappointing movie in which Kevin Costner just did his normal goofball/jackass/drunkard/basebally character.
Don't rent it, don't even head to your library! Your brain and your sense of taste will thank me!
Wild Hearts Can't Be Broken (1991)
tear;)
Absolute schmaltz, this movie is the core of many girl-nights and
sleepovers from my youth. Michael Schoeffling is so delicious, and I
don't know why he never made it too bigtime. I think Gabrielle Anwar is
talented in her subtlety, even though this movie is so Disney, so
superficial and sugary. Red-headed carnival boy (plays role of
"Clifford") is pretty good too.
It's nice, it's family-friendly...take it to entertain some young girls
while babysitting or something.
I cannot believe they make us write these things to ten lines. Am I in
detention? I mean, really now, I used to believe in "brevity is the
soul of wit" and all that. Anyhoo, here's your stinkin' 10 lines. Have
a g'day, dear reader of mine. Cheers.

Empire Records (1995)
my youth, I love this one
Hey, So normally, unintelligent movies make me cry and rip my hair out. But I loved and always shall love Empire Records, because it's soundtrack, it's colorful antics/setting/wardrobes and beautiful (if not Oscar-worthy, not at the time of EMPIRE, anyways...sorry, Ms. Zellweger) cast overpower its lack of a deep, realistic, juicy storyline. I love Anthony Lapaglia, I love the quotes from this film (too many to list, really!) and I think there's no one more attractive than Johnny Lee Miller as "AJ the soulful artist, in love...", though Ethan Embry in his skaters doofballness is still cute, in my mind's eye.
Rent it and watch it with your girlfriends, then quote it forever til you annoy people.
It made me want to work in a record store:)
