Votes: 14,540 | Gross: $6.59M

A rather odd item to this list.

I added it, because it's all about the horrors of war. In different ways. Sometimes visually very overt... When aircraft pilots are shot you see the blood come out of their mouths in a very graphical way. There's a lot of gay subtext, and I mean really a lot, especially in the dramatic ending, but also before. I believe men are kissing each other about 6 or 7 times, not always in an erotic way, but it's very strange to see in a movie from 1927. There's even some rear male nudity.

A very good, very beautiful movie. But not a horror movie in the traditional sense.

112. Juan of the Dead (2011)

A group of slackers face an army of zombies. The Cuban government and media claim the living dead are dissidents revolting against the government.

Director: Alejandro Brugués | Stars: Alexis Díaz de Villegas, Jorge Molina, Andros Perugorría, Andrea Duro

Votes: 10,994 | Gross: $0.02M

Very funny, I must say. To some degree it is indeed equal to Shaun of the Dead, but Juan contains much more political statements as well as much more criticism/satire on Cuba's current society.

There are two gay supporting characters. Rather stereotype. And there are a lot of slightly homophobic jokes. I don't think it was meant to be offensive, so it didn't bother me much. Juan represents a survival-type member of the unemployed working-class (or whatever). He's not supposed to be verbally political correct. Well, if you fancy a nice satiric zombie romp, Juan might be at your service.

Director: David Cronenberg | Stars: Peter Weller, Judy Davis, Ian Holm, Julian Sands

Votes: 56,671 | Gross: $2.54M

Extraordinary, well-crafted movie, that nevertheless comes across as dreary and shallow. According to the Wikipedia, Burroughs scholar Timothy S. Murphy found the film to be a muddled adaptation that reflects Cronenberg's mind more than the novel: he feels that Burroughs' subversive, allegorically political depiction of drugs and homosexuality becomes merely aesthetic.

From the site davidcronenberg.de I like to cite the intro to an interview with Cronenberg about Naked Lunch: [Begin quote] >>> William Burroughs´ Naked Lunch had been bandied about Hollywood for so long that many had long since concluded that the novel was unfilmable. When David Cronenberg announced his intention finally to bring the novel to the screen it seemed like an intriguing match at first. He shared Burroughs´ alternate fascination and disgust for the dark side of human sexuality, have already made films that featured sadomasochism (Dead Ringers), sexually spread parasites (Shivers), vagina dentata (Videodrome), and ambisexuality (Stereo and Crimes of the Future). But in Naked Lunch Cronenberg has taken Burroughs´s unbashedly gay novel and made a film that is extremely abashed toward gayness, if not outright gaybashing. One of the least repressed books ever written, Naked Lunch has been transformed into a movie whose main theme is, curiously enough, repression. <<< [End quote]

I fully agree to that statement.

I've seen this movie some time ago. However I need to rewatch it before I can write an honest review. I remember some really nice cinematography. Probably that happened to be its most notable aspect. The main character is gay and he has a relationship. But - if I remember well - it didn't get much screentime in the movie. It all seemed rather blunt. The movie felt a bit dreamy, a nice different approach on Lovecraft. But somehow a bit shallow. The ending was rather a let down.

I really have to rewatch it, before I can write something more useful.

119. Salomé (1922)

Not Rated | 72 min | Biography, Drama, History

Salome, the daughter of Herodias, seduces her step-father/uncle Herod, governor of Judea, with a salacious dance. In return, he promises her the head of the prophet John the Baptist.

Directors: Charles Bryant, Alla Nazimova | Stars: Alla Nazimova, Nigel De Brulier, Mitchell Lewis, Rose Dione

Votes: 1,158

From the wikipedia: "Salomé is often called one of the first art films to be made in the U.S." "There is a longstanding rumor, which seems to have started while the film was still in production and has been asserted by chronicler of Hollywood decadence Kenneth Anger, that the film's cast is composed entirely of gay or bisexual actors in an homage to Oscar Wilde, as per star and producer Nazimova's demand. It is, of course, impossible to say, but one of the extras in Salomé reported that a number of the cast members—both featured and extras—were indeed gay, but not an unusual percentage of them, and certainly not all of them. What can be said is that Nazimova herself was usually thought of as a lesbian (despite occasional flings with men including Paul Ivano), the two guard characters (who, next to Salomé, have the most screen time) are at least played very stereotypically gay, and several of the female courtiers are men in drag."

Votes: 39,653 | Gross: $0.69M

This comment contains spoilers

The imdb has tagged this movie with "gay lead character". But in the movie this is actually meant as a little surprise moment in the plot. When you know this upfront, it isn't difficult to figure out to whom it refers. The characters John Cusack and Zac Efron play, are attracted to women (especially Kidman in particular), and this is already very clear from the first moment they hit the screen. So that leaves out Matthew McConaughey. He doesn't play it stereotypically, he doesn't get romantically involved and neither seems his homosexuality to be very important to the plot. At some point he falls prey to a couple of gay bashers, who leave him seriously wounded. Unintentionally he is outed that way. While the story is situated in 1970, his brother (Efron) isn't very affected by it.

The whole movie fails to convince. It's a pointless mash-up of movies such asIn the Heat of the Night (1967), The Last Picture Show (1971), Fatal Attraction (1987) and Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil (1997) The result is very nonsensical and vulgar. And boring - yeah, really very boring.

Director: Giulio Questi | Stars: Tomas Milian, Marilù Tolo, Piero Lulli, Milo Quesada

Votes: 2,936

I'm not a big fan of the western genre, neither of the revenge (sub-)genre, so to me it was quite an ordeal to sit through this one. The premise didn't make it much better, because it's about a bandit exacting a bloody vengeance on the people who tried to kill him. Usually I don't care much about the destiny of these kind of movie criminals. Compared to other western or horror films from this area the gore is a bit more graphic. The implied gay gang-rape is of little interest. Just a bit odd for a 1967 western movie. I guess most of the public didn't even note or understood it, back in those days.

The movie isn't as surreal as most reviewers claim it to be. Just a bit weird. But to be honest, that's nothing special. So many strange westerns do exist. To name a few:

Wolfblood The Terror of Tiny Town Down the Wyoming Trail The Beast of Hollow Mountain El Grito de la Muerte The Curse of the Undead (nice movie actually!) The Valley of Gwangi (also quite nice) Billy the Kid vs Dracula Jesse James meets Frankenstein's Daughter

141. Kiss Me Deadly (2008 TV Movie)

R | 87 min | Action, Crime, Thriller

Ex-spy Jacob Keane is drawn back into the shadowy world of international espionage when his former partner Marta reappears after seventeen years, her memory erased, on the run from a pair of deadly, psychopathic assassins.

Director: Ron Oliver | Stars: Robert Gant, Shannen Doherty, Fraser Brown, John Rhys-Davies

Votes: 573 | Gross: $0.00M

Although I like the Donald Strachey detective series very much, which was also directed by Ron Oliver, this TV movie was quite a disappointment. The main problem definitely is the script. It was impossible to figure out what this story was heading for. Suspense, action, war, political drama? We never know why the main character was a spy in the first case. We don't know any of his motives, we don't get a clear idea about his sense of morality.

There's a really "ugly" moment in the movie, when this ex-spy discovers that he is traced down by his enemies through his cellphone. Without any scruples he puts it in a young innocent man's pocket. This guy soon gets brutally murdered. Couldn't he get rid of the phone in any other way? The main character uses a lot of violence. So his ideas of morality involve that it's okay to hurt or kill innocent bystanders to protect his loved ones. His boyfriend also gets killed, because the hero-spy takes more effort to rescue a female colleague. The movie more or less ends when our hero is reunited with his daughter and lesbian wife. It feels like some kind of statement about the value of family life...

But the biggest anti-climax, is that all this violence had nothing relevant to do with the alleged cold-war subplot, just with a large amount of money.

142. Hour of the Wolf (1968)

Truly Awful. I'd rather watch Monster A-Go-Go ten times in a row, than this one again.

One of the demons is gay. And perhaps the main character (von Sydow) too. Apparently he murdered a young boy, whose body he fancied, or something. Well that's at least what the imagery suggests.

How could I forget this one. Well, actually that wasn't very difficult. The most obvious gay aspect is of course the comical role Robert Morley plays. There are a few other subtextual, less-obvious references. The reason why I think it wasn't very strange to overlook this movie, is that none of the gay related parts have anything sexual to it. It's just prissy, effeminate guys.

I hesitate a bit if this movie really belongs here. It's a more or less biographical pic about Truman Capote at the time he wrote his most well-known work "Cold Blood". The movie focuses on the extensive interviews he had with Perry Smith, one of the suspects of the very gruesome, senseless murder of a family in Holcomb. His feelings for Smith become increasingly contradicting in several ways.

What an awful, awful movie!!!

The protagonist is an openly gay man, who's having relationship problems with his boyfriend. The antagonist is a closeted gay man, who's just starting a new job at the company run by the protagonist. So the antagonist falls in love with him, starts stalking him and eventually kidnaps and tortures him. This movie is far, far overlong (111 minutes). The conversations are grudgingly horrendous. One blatant banality after the other. After 10 minutes it already has become an endurance test. It takes an hour-and-a-half before getting to the horror part of the movie. Which really isn't of any interest. The camerawork, the cinematography, the editing, the recorded sound, the synthesizer music, it's all so very, very cheap and tasteless. Last but not least: this is not a good movie for gay liberation. It's filled with totally dumb stereotypical situations.

My humble advise: skip it!
