Whether you love it or hate it—or just hate that you might, kinda, maybe be chill with it—Will Gluck’s Anyone But You has found its audience. The Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell two-hander defied critics and connected with plenty of folks happy to bake in the Australian sun as the film’s stars swam around Port Jackson Bay and debated what it means to be “hot girl fit.” In theaters, the movie over-performed and grossed more than $200 million worldwide, and now on Netflix it’s soared to the top of the movie viewing chart around the world.
It turns out folks love an old-fashioned romantic comedy (surprise) when the leads are attractive and the jokes land. And even when some jokes do not land, the structure of Anyone But You’s story is sound. Indeed, its tale about two one-night stand exes who insist they hate each...

Anyone But You is getting a lot of attention from fans and especially industry specialists who are now just finding out that rom-coms can still make money at the box office. While the raunchy romantic comedy by the director Will Gluck (Friends with Benefits) isn’t exactly a masterpiece or an instant classic, it gives the viewers some much-deserved escape and a fun story, that they don’t have to wear 3D glasses for.
Starring Sydney Sweeney (Euphoria) and Glen Powell (Top Gun: Maverick), Anyone But You revolves around Ben and Bea, who meet each other by chance and have an amazing first date unfortunately that doesn’t last long, and both of them part ways but the kicker comes when after some time both of them unexpectedly find themselves at a destination wedding in Australia, and because of unexpected circumstances they decide to pretend to be a couple.

There’s clever marketing, and then there’s Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney’s ingenious strategy for drumming up more interest in their romantic comedy, Anyone But You, by leading the world into thinking they’re having an off-screen relationship. Speaking with The New York Times about the success of the couple’s comedic smash hit, which earned $219 million at the worldwide box office, Powell says he and Sweeney leaned into the rumors to bring attention to their film, and it worked like a charm.
“The two things that you have to sell a rom-com are fun and chemistry,” Powell told The New York Times. “Sydney and I have a ton of fun together, and we have a ton of effortless chemistry. That’s people wanting what’s on the screen off the screen, and sometimes you just have to lean into it a bit — and it worked wonderfully. Sydney is very smart.

1986's "Top Gun" decidedly propelled Tom Cruise toward stardom, while the actor had already made his mark with "Risky Business" and "The Color of Money," two films that helped underline his dynamic range as a performer before his rise to fame. From this point on, Cruise would go on to star in a string of projects that cemented his superstar status, but like any performer, a few films failed to impress audiences and critics for many reasons. No, I am not talking about the disastrous "The Mummy" — the first and final entry in the doomed Dark Universe — but the lowest-rated Tom Cruise film, at least according to Rotten Tomatoes. I'm talking about Roger Donaldson's 1988 film about making drinks and money: "Cocktail," which currently sports an abysmal 9% on Rotten Tomatoes.
There is good reason for this overwhelmingly negative consensus, as "Cocktail" feels like an unsavory product of its time, what...

As everyone knows by now, Tom Cruise is a man of many talents and one who doesn’t shy away from taking huge risks to get what he wants. For example, he trained to base jump with a wingsuit and a parachute for his role as Ethan Hunt in the latest Mission: Impossible- Dead Reckoning.
But on the flip side, it’s not always that the star is seen taking a deadly gamble with his films, in fact, in his 1988 film Cocktail, the star wanted to learn the art of juggling for his role.

Adapted from Trent Dalton’s 2019 novel, Boy Swallows Universe is a sprawling coming-of-age story about a precocious teen, Eli Bell (Felix Cameron), surrounded and raised by a motley crew of outlaws and outcasts in a rough suburb of Brisbane, Australia, in the 1980s. Eli’s loyal older brother, Gus (Lee Tiger Halley), hasn’t uttered a word since he was eight, and their step-father, Lyle (Travis Fimmel), is a small-time heroin dealer. Also milling about town are Slim (Bryan Brown), a convicted murderer, and Teddy (Ben O’Toole), an associate of Lyle’s with a soft spot for Eli’s loving but gullible mother, Frankie (Phoebe Tonkin).
Each of the show’s seven episodes depicts a different chapter of Eli’s colorful adolescence, a structural device that allows Boy Swallows Universe to cover ground at a lively pace. No event is dwelt on too long before, true to the reality of teen life,...

Plot: After a meet-cute at a coffee shop, high-flying finance whiz Ben (Glen Powell) and unhappy law student Bea (Sydney Sweeney) have a romantic misunderstanding that puts them at each other’s throats. When the two are forced to attend a destination wedding together, their feud threatens to derail the nuptials, leading their friends to plot a romantic trap that will have them fall back into each other’s arms…and beds.
Review: Let me preface this by saying there’s nothing wrong with a good romantic comedy. It’s a genre that’s been dying in recent years, but when the formula is just right, you might manage a crowd-pleasing smash that will make many people happy. Yet, there’s an alchemy to the genre, and if the chemistry between the two leads is off, you wind up with a dud. Not everyone can be Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan...

Earlier this year, Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell’s on-set and red carpet flirtations sparked rumors of the duo being involved in an actual relationship. The extensive are-they-or-aren’t-they press coverage has felt suspiciously like PR engineering geared toward setting audiences up for Will Gluck’s rom-com Anyone But You. This seemingly manufactured narrative of on-screen chemistry spilling over into real life, though, dovetails interestingly with the plot of the film, which finds Bea (Sweeney) and Ben (Powell) toeing a similarly ambiguous line as they pretend to be in a relationship while at the wedding in Australia between the former’s sister, Halle (Hadley Robinson), and the latter’s friend, Claudia (Alexandra Shipp).
Bea and Ben’s history began before the wedding, when a flirty coffeeshop encounter led to a romantic, yet sex-free, late-night talking session at Ben’s home only for Bea to sneak out early the next morning.

America has been starved for pure, unapologetic, multiplex-grade romantic comedies, and Will Gluck’s “Anyone but You” doesn’t waste any time announcing itself as one of those. The first five minutes alone serve up a classic meet-cute in a coffee shop, a funny but wholly illogical bit of physical comedy involving a splash of water that might be mistaken for a pee stain, and a magical — but chaste — night together in a personality-less bachelor pad that looks just like an Ikea showroom.
If not for the hint of self-awareness that allows Bea (Sydney Sweeney) to put Ben (Glen Powell) on blast for his dude-bro decor, nothing about this prologue would seem the least bit out of place at the start of a mid-tier Julia Roberts movie from 1997. Not the leading man whose chiseled smile makes your own features seem like the parody of a face by comparison, nor the...

Anyone who’s seen Glen Powell in Richard Linklater’s terrifically enjoyable Hit Man will know he’s a bona fide movie star with charisma to burn. If you were paying attention, that was evident even in Top Gun: Maverick. And Sydney Sweeney has shown impressive range, serving delicious mean-girl snark in season one of The White Lotus, tracing a self-destructive spiral on Euphoria and demonstrating serious dramatic chops in Reality. But neither screen chemistry nor laughs can be manufactured, especially not with the kind of pedestrian writing in Will Gluck’s Anyone But You, which does nothing to reanimate the moribund studio rom-com.
Before he got busy with two Peter Rabbit movies that apparently do exist, or the unfortunate 2014 Annie remake, Gluck turned heads with the 2010 teen comedy Easy A, a contemporary take on The Scarlet Letter elevated by a star-making turn from Emma Stone. The director riffs on...

Do we need to get Glen Powell some lessons in stripping for Christmas? According to the Top Gun: Maverick actor, he nearly died at the top of a cliff while taking his pants off for a hilarious scene in the upcoming romantic comedy Anyone but You. In the scene, Powell pulls a giant spider from inside his shorts, then strips down to the buff to ensure there aren’t more creepy crawlies skittering toward his junk.
“You just have to grip it and rip it on a scene like that,” Powell told Variety at the Anyone but You premiere in New York Monday night, pointing to the moment he frantically strips naked in front of his co-star Sydney Sweeney. “You know you’re not going to leave that filming day looking cool, so you just have to embrace it.”

At the beginning of Baz Luhrmann’s Faraway Downs, 12-year-old Aboriginal boy Nullah (Brandon Walters) recounts the abiding lesson his grandfather taught him growing up in the wilderness of the Northern Territory of Australia: “Tell ‘em story.” Over the course of the six-part series, a reimagining of Luhrmann’s 2008 film Australia, story will emerge as one of the four cornerstones of Aboriginal identity, the others being country, song, and dreaming.
Luhrmann uses footage from the film, scenes that were lost to the cutting-room floor, and a modern soundtrack by Indigenous artists to expand the story and give it new depth. The narrative arc of the series, though, remains largely identical to that of Australia: When an English aristocrat, Lady Sarah Ashley (Nicole Kidman), travels to Australia to convince her husband to sell the titular ranch, she comes into the orbit of a cattle drover named Drover (Hugh Jackman), and after embarking on a journey together,...

The first teaser for the limited TV series Boy Swallows Universe, based on Trent Dalton’s famous best-selling novel of the same name, has been released by Netflix.
The trailer has Phoebe Tonkin in the same carefree girl attitude — but she’s more than that in the plot since she’s a drug addict mother. Travis Fimmel, on the other hand, has a slightly odd demeanor.
Boy Swallows Universe | Official Trailer
Boy Swallows Universe Trailer Previews Drugs and Drama in the 1980s. The trailer, set to the music of Paul Kelly’s classic Dumb Things, takes us to the 1980s, an era of mullets, Days of Our Lives.
The film doesn’t reveal much, transitioning from a beautiful Brisbane and photos of a happy family to a spiral into drug addiction and violence. However, anybody who has read Trent Dalton’s 2018 novel on which it is based would recognize the photos.

Take a trip back to the 1980s. Netflix has unveiled a teaser trailer for a first look at the Australian crime series called Boy Swallows Universe, based on the iconic novel written by Trent Dalton. It's adapted by an acclaimed screenwriter named John Collee. Set in 80s Brisbane, Australia, a precocious boy and his selectively mute brother embark on a suburban odyssey of love, redemption and retribution after their family is torn apart by a drug lord. The story revolves around Eli Bell, a working-class youth who enters Brisbane's underworld to save his mother. This trailer starts out all happy-go-lucky but gets pretty dark by the end. Starring Zac Burgess as teenage Eli, Travis Fimmel as Lyle Orlik, Simon Baker as Robert Bell, Phoebe Tonkin as Frances Bell, with Felix Cameron, Lee Tiger Halley, Bryan Brown, Anthony Lapaglia, and Sophie Wilde. This looks like it has some strong style and...

Before Baz Luhrmann took award season by storm with "Elvis," he made "Australia." If you've forgotten about the 2008 epic starring Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman, you're not alone; the movie wasn't exactly embraced upon release, and while it made plenty of money at the box office, it also became a bit of a punchline among critics that year. As Stephanie Zacharek wrote in a review for Salon, "The second half of 'Australia,' Luhrmann's attempt to pull off a wartime weeper, is so aggressively sentimental that it begins to feel more like punishment than pleasure."
So what does "Australia" have to do with "Faraway Downs"? Well, everything. The upcoming six-episode limited series set to drop on streaming next month has been branded as a reimagining of Luhrmann's movie -- a second stab at his Australian "Gone With The Wind." It's an unusual choice from an always-interesting filmmaker, and we'll know...

Baz Luhrmann (Elvis) revisits his Australia feature film and transforms the nearly three-hour epic into the six-episode series Faraway Downs. The limited series will include an hour of footage that didn’t make the film’s final cut, as well as a different ending.
“I got the idea and started to relook at the footage and realized I’ve shot enough to do it as episodic storytelling through a revisiting of the piece, not necessarily as a better film than Australia, but a different variation on the themes,” explained Luhrmann in an interview with TheWrap. “I was able to use the strengths of episodic storytelling to breathe those things out and explore them in a stronger way.”
The feature film, and now the Hulu limited series it spawned, stars Hugh Jackman, Nicole Kidman, Bryan Brown, Brandon Walters, and Ben Mendelsohn. 2008’s Australia, which currently sits at 54% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes,...

"The only thing you really own is your story... just trying to live a good one." Surprise!! After the success of Baz Luhrmann's Elvis last year, they're revisiting one of his least successful films. Hulu revealed an official trailer for the mini-series Faraway Downs, which is a re-edit of Luhrmann's 2008 movie Australia. We actually covered this movie extensively back in 2008 when it was first released, including with editorials and more. "An iconic duo, to say the least." Faraway Downs is the reimagining of the film Australia told in six parts about an English aristocrat & a rough-hewn cattle drover who join forces to protect the million-acre cattle ranch of her late husband. Although Hulu describes Australia as a "cinematic masterpiece", it didn't do as well as they hoped; now it seems it will play better as a series. Nicole Kidman & Hugh Jackman co-star, with Brandon Walters, David Wenham, Bryan Brown,...

Hulu’s Faraway Downs might be the most unusual limited series of 2023 — in that it has its roots in a film from 2008.
Director Baz Luhrmann (Elvis, Moulin Rouge!) reimagined and expanded his film Australia into the six-episode series, which is set to premiere Nov. 26 on Hulu in the United States and Disney+ and Star+ internationally. Hulu on Thursday released a trailer for the series (watch it below).
“While Australia the film has its own life, there was another telling of this story; one with different layers, nuances and even alternative plot twists that an episodic format has allowed us to explore,” Luhrmann said when the project was announced in June 2022. “Drawn from the same material, Faraway Downs is a new variation on Australia for audiences to discover.”

The first trailer for “Faraway Downs” has arrived, but maybe it has been here since 2008.

Released in the fall of 2008, just a few months after this very site was born, Baz Luhrmann’s Australia, starring Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman, ended up doing decently with a worldwide gross of $211 million on its $130 million budget, though it’s safe to say with its disappointing reception both in the U.S. and with critics at large, it hasn’t been fondly revisited. However, the director wasn’t done telling the full story of the mid-20th century tale as he’s expanded it into a six-part Hulu series arriving this November. Directed by Will Gluck (“Easy A”), “Anyone but You” has been touted as a loose modernization of Shakespeare’s “Much Ado About Nothing.” The film’s official logline reads, “When college arch-nemeses reunite years after graduation for a destination wedding, they pretend to be a couple for their own personal reasons. But through pretending, they actually fall in love.”
“Let’s just tell everyone we’re together,” Sweeney says to Powell while they take a sunset sailboat ride. “There’s no way we could convince anyone we actually like each other,” he responds. Though the two roll their eyes, footage flashing throughout the trailer makes it clear their chemistry is undeniable.

The first trailer for Baz Luhrmann’s “Faraway Downs” has arrived — watch it at the top of the page right now.
Starring Nicole Kidman, Hugh Jackman, Bryan Brown, Brandon Walters, Ben Mendelsohn, the six-part miniseries is a reworking of Luhrmann’s 2008 film “Australia.” Recut by Luhrmann to produce what he calls a “richer telling,” it premieres Nov. 26 on Hulu.
Like “Australia,” the series centers on English aristocrat Lady Sarah Ashley (Nicole Kidman) who travels across the globe to “confront her wayward husband and sell an unusual asset: a million-acre cattle ranch in the Australian Outback called ‘Faraway Downs.” When her husband passes away, Lady Sarah teams up with a cattle drover (Hugh Jackman) to protect her ranch from the gaze of a ruthless Australian cattle baron, King Carney (Bryan Brown).
Those used to Luhrmann’s frenetic directing style might be surprised by the trailer’s more deliberate pacing, emphasizing the...

Will Gluck’s upcoming romantic comedy Anyone But You, starring Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell is pushing its release date. The film now opens on December 22 instead of December 15. The new release date puts the film in a prime spot for that sweet 4-Day Christmas weekend box office haul.
In addition to debuting a first-look image, details about the plot are making the rounds. In Anyone But You, Sweeney and Powell’s characters hate each other so much they can’t help but fall for one another. The story unfolds in Sydney, Australia, and follows the couple as they experience a variety of vacation-related mishaps, including falling from boats and discovering spiders down their pants. Have you seen the spiders in Australia? Oh, the horror!
