The car chase was one of many innovations of the New Hollywood era, where on-location authenticity supplanted studio backlot fakery. Yes, there were car chases in movies before Peter Yates' "Bullitt," but they tended to be laden with process shots featuring actors at the wheel while the image projected behind them veered out of control. Even an A-plus production like Alfred Hitchcock's "North by Northwest" settled for soundstage-bound sequences that manufactured the sensation of high-speed vehicular mayhem.
Perhaps they were thrilling to people at the time because they had nothing quite so thrilling as a comparison. In any event, once Yates unleashed his 11-minute, practically shot pursuit through the perilously hilly streets of San Francisco in 1968's "Bullitt," there was no going back. If you weren't filming real cars barrelling at unsafe speeds through city streets or country roads, you were wasting everyone's time.
And it is only right...

They were a Hollywood power couple who chose to live and raise their family in Connecticut, far removed from the center of moviemaking. They were box office draws who remained true to their art, using their celebrity to finance smaller dramas and passion projects. They epitomized glamour and romance for legions of fans, but remained more devoted to social justice and philanthropy than red carpet premieres.
Now, a new six-part documentary will examine the lives and legacies of the enigmatic and incandescent Joanne Woodward and Paul Newman. The series, “The Last Movie Stars,” is directed by Ethan Hawke and executive produced by Martin Scorsese. CNN Films and HBO Max are backing the series, which will premiere exclusively on CNN Plus, the news network’s subscription streaming service which will debut later this year. The film will also be available later via HBO Max.
There’s certainly a lot of rich material to dig into.

Technology-aided murders rock a small town in the new sci-fi thriller Interpreters, and with the film out now on VOD platforms and DVD from High Octane Pictures, we caught up with co-star Wolfgang Weber to discuss his role in the movie, as well as his upcoming thriller The Realtor and the filmmaking work he does through his drone company Airwolf.
Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for us, and congratulations on your role in Interpreters! What was it about Deputy Wilson's character that made you want to play him, and what was the audition process like for the role?
Wolfgang Weber: Thanks so much! I had a bunch of fun on Interpreters! Playing Deputy Wilson, I enjoyed the vulnerability of him. I also didn't have to dig too deep.
Years ago, I did work as a corrections officer. So I've already had the muscle memory for the character in place.

Shifting the focus from the drivers to the medical pioneers who saved their lives is as exhilarating as a health and safety briefing
Even if you are not an aficionado of motor sports, let alone the particular branch of it that revolves around Us race competitions such as the Indy 500, this documentary on injury medicine within this sector was, surprisingly, a little bit interesting. Perhaps that’s because directors Roger Hinze and Michael William Miles so single-mindedly keep the focus on the medical track, as opposed to the asphalt one, which makes physicians such as on-site medical officer Stephen Olvey and orthopaedic surgeon Terry Trammell the real heroes of the story, rather than drivers such as Mario Andretti. It’s as if, say, a history of an architectural style is being told through the eyes of plumbers – not where you would expect the focus to be but interesting nonetheless.

Mutants, superheroes, and mind control — these are all familiar terms to anyone keeping up with the Marvel cinematic universe. Yet while such topics remain germane to “Legion,” Noah Hawley’s second serialized creation for FX, they don’t apply the way you might think. A bald man in a wheelchair touting tolerance is nowhere to be found. Nor should you expect to see too many spandex suits or adamantium claws. And while these well-known figures are out of sight and out of mind, it’s only because “Legion” is focused on creating a private universe within a mind of its own; one far more intricate, intimate, and courageous than any that have come before.

Acting legend Paul Newman is known all around the world for his extraordinary film career, including an Oscar win for Martin Scorsese's "The Color of Money" (1986), and his charity Newman's Own Foundation, which has raised over $450 million since its creation in 1982. Every time Britney Spears gets another chance to deliver a great music video, I think, “Well! Isn’t This the story of a girl named Lucky?”
But the “Work B**ch” gurgler, who’s definitely given us some great videos over these 15 years, did the right thing in reuniting with Joseph Kahn for her new clip “Perfume.” After all, he’s the man who helmed the vids for “Stronger,” “Womanizer,” and “Toxic,” and those are easily three of Brit’s finest cinematic spectacles. But did the reunion work out? Kahn has taken to Twitter in a huff noting that the original “Perfume” video was supposed to be much darker than the one released today, but I’m assuming Britney’s handlers/managers/keepers nixed what looks like gunplay in it. Too bad, since Kahn claims Spears gives a “game-changing performance” in it. And Uta Hagen sniffed.

I absolutely love how Ron Howard can direct a film like The Dilemma, which wasn’t exactly adored by critics, but then bounce back without batting an eye.
As if seeing Howard’s comedic role in this year’s re-launch of Arrested Development wasn’t enough, his newest directorial effort, Rush, is a magnificent, fast-paced thrill ride wrapped around an intriguing true story. I’m no Formula 1 enthusiast, with my knowledge not reaching far past the name Mario Andretti, but Howard’s focused vision paired with Peter Morgan’s deliciously interesting screenplay opened a world full of adrenaline junkies and pride validation, also laying strong groundwork for stars Daniel Brühl and Chris Hemsworth. Rush is a fast and furious biopic that exposes two very different approaches to the world of high-speed racing, one that’s both informative and undeniably enjoyable, providing another remarkable highlight on Ron Howard’s resume.

Geez, these F1 2013 videos are coming on fast and furious (haha, cars!). In the most recent trailer for the upcoming racing sim from Codemasters, the focus is placed on the seemingly very important Ferrari 312 T2. I’m not intimately familiar with it or anything, but that doesn’t change the fact that it looks incredibly sexy coming around the bend at the beginning of this video.
Aside from slow motion car porn, the trailer is essentially a promo for the game’s new Classic Edition. In that version, you’ll be able to race famous cars, drivers, and circuits from various eras of F1 history. My knowledge on that is a bit stiff, but I imagine F1 junkies will really get a kick out of it. Other sports games have been doing this kind of thing for years, so it’s definitely a good move on Codemasters’ end.

I’m not enough of a Formula One junkie to instantly start drooling/sweating/other bodily function at the mention of a 1988 Ferrari F1-87/88C, but that doesn’t mean I’m not enough of a general geek for those things to start happening once I actually see a picture.
The car, which is shown above, is quite beautiful and so, I suppose it should be considered good news then that this very vehicle will be included in this year’s edition of Codemasters’ yearly F1 simulator, F1 2013.
The rest of the jargon is kind of lost on me, but I’m sure anyone more familiar with the series or the sport will eat this up. So for those folks, be sure to check out the press release below. The trailer below is both awesomely and comically dramatic, so that’s something as well.

In the hierarchy of the "Real Housewives" franchise, Bravo's Miami iteration might never match the ratings highs of Atlanta or New Jersey, or be as obsessed over as Beverly Hills, but as it salsa-ed into its third season on Monday (Aug. 12) with all the Latin flair it's come to be known for, it proved it's determined not to go way of the D.C. debacle. (Heck, it survived Season 1, so it's already a success by comparison.)
At the end of Season 2, bitter enemies Adriana De Moura and Joanna Krupa both found themselves engaged to be wed, setting the stage for an intense race to the altar between the feuding beauties. As tonight's episode began (and the season's advertising has teased), it's clear that the nuptial ramp-up will be this season's central focus. But that won't be the only source of drama.

Turbo movie box office: A costly disappointment-in-the-making? DreamWorks Animation / 20th Century Fox’s Turbo debuted on Wednesday at 3,551 North American locations, grossing a barely passable $5.55 million according to figures found at Box Office Mojo. True, Turbo isn’t a sequel like Despicable Me 2 or Monsters University, but the 3D animated feature cost a reported $135 million. Could Turbo be thus considered a domestic box-office flop-in-the-making? Well, that’s much too early to tell, as animated films at times develop sturdy legs — and not only in the U.S. and Canada, but elsewhere as well. (Image: Turbo snail racer.) (Friday, July 19, update: Following a solid Thursday midnight debut, it looks like the domestic weekend box office will belong to the low-budget horror movie The Conjuring. The paragraph below has been slightly amended to reflect that.) Box-office pundits had been expecting Turbo to top the domestic box-office chart this weekend, with approximately $28-30 million,...

Trapped in a mundane job at the tomato plant, Theo dreams of becoming a glamorous race car driver.
He wants the fame and fortune of Indianapolis 500 winner Guy Gagne, but more than anything, Theo wants to go fast.
The problem? Theo is a snail.
That's the premise behind the DreamWorks Animation movie "Turbo" that opens Wednesday and features the Indianapolis 500. The idea, by director, co-writer and story creator David Soren, came from watching his young son's obsession with "all things fast" and an annoying snail infestation in his own front yard.
"It's the juxtaposition of extreme slowness and speed all in my yard," Soren said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press. "I love an underdog story, and nobody expects anything out of a snail, the odds are stacked against them. They are the butt of slow jokes – they are stepped on by kids, despised by gardeners,...

Ryan Reynolds is starring in a brand new animated movie called "Turbo." He plays the film's title character, a snail who dreams of racing in the Indianapolis 500. Following a freak accident, because that's how these things happen, Turbo's DNA gets fused with nitrous oxide, making him as fast as any race car.
Before Sunday's Indy 500, a new featurette from the movie has been released featuring several members of the cast, along with 2012 Indy 500 winner Dario Franchitti. "You see the passion everybody on the 'Turbo' project has for making it the best possible racing film," Dario says, "There's no limits. Anything is possible." Reynolds says the underdog nature of the story is what drew him to the film.
The cast is jam-packed with big names, including Samuel L. Jackson, Maya Rudolph, Bill Hader, Snoop Dogg, Paul Giamatti and Ken Jeong. For racing fans, Dario, Will Power and...

Of Dick Van Dyke's many talents, the most remarkable may be the moment you think about him, you smile.
The affable actor, singer and dancer has that effect on audiences. His colleagues think highly of him, too. They're bestowing upon him the Life Achievement Award at the 19th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards, airing live on TNT and TBS Sunday, Jan. 27.
Although his former co-star Mary Tyler Moore took this honor last year, Van Dyke says, "It never occurred to me I might be next. It was a total surprise to me. I found out a couple of months ago. They told me, and I just couldn't believe it. It was another surprise in a career of surprises."
Few people realize that Van Dyke, 87, started with Walter Cronkite. Van Dyke wouldn't come right out and say he was proud of his career, which continues with his singing quartet, The Vantastix.

On Sunday (May 27), the 96th running of the Indianapolis 500 mile race -- aka the Indy 500 -- will kick off at Noon Et at Indiana's Indianapolis Motor Speedway, but for the first time in years Danica Patrick -- who is now competing on the Nascar circuit -- won't be in the starting lineup. Neither will racing legend Richard Petty.
Petty is concentrating his energies on the Coca Cola 600, which kicks off Saturday evening in Charlotte, N.C.
"Really, we just never put anything together to go to Indy this year, so it's all the 600. As far as I'm concerned, the 600 is a lot bigger race than the 500 anyway," Petty tells the Sporting News.
So who is worth watching in Indianapolis this year? The Christian Science Monitor recommends keeping an eye on three past winners who will be in the running: Dario Franchitti, Helio Castroneves and Scott Dixon. But, cautions the Monitor,...

Find out who won "The Celebrity Apprentice."
Here are a few things we learned:

- Dayana has nothing positive to say about Lisa, but Lisa thinks Dayana's crying impersonation of her was hilarious. "I think she's great," Lisa says about Dayana. "I love being made fun of. I dish it out and I can take it.
