The Pitch: Phil Tippett is the maker of cinematic dreams. An expert in the field of stop-motion, Tippett was hired by George Lucas in the late 1970s to design the Holochess scene for 1977's "Star Wars: A New Hope." Tippett would go on to spend the next 45 years bringing all sorts of entities to life on film, including the flesh-eating stars of Joe Dante's "Piranha," the fire-breathing Vermithrax Pejorative in Matthew Robbins's "Dragonslayer," and the murderous Ed-209 in Paul Verhoeven's "RoboCop."
Even after the CGI boom of the early '90s, Tippett adapted to the times. This began with "Jurassic Park," on which Tippett is cheekily...

Something that genuinely can be described as a passion project, the new stop-motion animated film, Mad God has been with legendary visual effects artist Phil Tippett for decades. For a man with his name on Jurassic Park, Star Wars, and RoboCop, finally realizing his crazed, nightmarish vision might’ve been the greatest challenge of his career. Made in parts over years and only getting across the finish line with the help of a successful Kickstarter campaign, the sure-to-be a new classic midnight movie arrives both on theater screens and streaming through Shudder this month.
We were lucky enough to chat with Tippett about what goes into such an elongated, difficult process.
The Film Stage: In terms of the inception of this film, what was the first image that formed in your head? What was the thing that made you think that this is the story and this is where everything is coming from?...

Documentarian Owsley Brown’s third feature, “Serenade for Haiti,” is bound for New York City’s prestigious Doc NYC festival next month, and continues his burgeoning tradition of exploring and celebrating music and art. The film was shot over a seven-year period and focuses on the Sainte Trinité Music School in Port-au-Prince, all the better to capture a little-seen side of Haiti and some of its wonderfully talented youth.
The film is billed “as story of resilience and great humanity [that] unfolds as the teachers and students of Sainte Trinité sustain a deep commitment to music and education against extraordinary odds, including the destruction of their school in the 2010 earthquake and the subsequent efforts to rebuild it.”

Sofia Coppola's story of the teen gang who robbed celebrity mansions is a shallow ode to Hollywood excess
There is a scene in I'm Alan Partridge in which our hero must pretend that the home of a fan is actually his own. He offers two TV executives he wants to impress a tour, despite never having been there himself. This is the lounge, he says, revealing a room with a single chair and a painting of a near-naked woman reclining in front of a Harley. Then he opens the door to the next room, which turns out to be plastered with posters of himself, customised T-shirts, blown-up autographs, a lifesize model, personalised bunting. The execs flee, frightened as to the kind of mind that could conceive of, let alone inhabit, such a shrine to self-love.
One can only imagine their horror faced with the house of Paris Hilton as...

Francis Ford Coppola's latest film production mixes the surreal with murder. Currently at the Toronto International Film Festival, Twixt also takes some elements from Edgar Allan Poe's writings e.g murder mystery. In a small town local writer Hall (Val Kilmer) is shopping his latest failing tale titled Witch Hunter, when he is introduced to real horror. Several people have gone missing likely due to a serial killer.
Now, the first trailer has been released for Twixt. This clip is over 3 minutes long and there are some colourful dream sequences to be seen in the reel. Have a look at Coppola's surreal masterpiece below.
The synopsis for Twixt is here:
"A writer with a declining career arrives in a small town as part of his book tour and gets caught up in a murder mystery involving a young girl. That night in a dream, he is approached by...

- Writer/director Sofia Coppola discusses her latest film Somewhere with Film Independent -
It's hard to believe that over ten years have passed since Sofia Coppola burst onto the scene with her 1999 indie hit The Virgin Suicides. Now the Academy Award and Spirit Award-winning writer/director is back with Somewhere. Winner of the Golden Lion Award at the 2010 Venice Film Festival, Somewhere, starring Stephen Dorff and Elle Fanning, depicts the story of Johnny Marco, a Hollywood superstar, living in a hotel and numbly going through the motions until his 11-year-old daughter Cleo drops into his life, shaking the very ground he stands on. Shot entirely on location in Milan, on the streets of L.A., and at the famed Chateau Marmont, Somewhere is a small story that asks the big questions about what truly matters in life and what steps must be taken to get there. I sat down with Ms.

A few weeks ago sound designer Richard Beggs mentioned that Sofia Coppola's significant other, Thomas Mars, will be contributing original music to her upcoming film, "Somewhere," to be released in 2010. This continues Coppola's track record of tapping leading edge pop/rock musicians to provide the original music for her films, rather than traditional film score composers. On "The Virgin Suicides" she collaborated with the French downtempo electronic band, Air. On "Lost in Translation" it was Kevin Shields of My Bloody Valentine who provided the original music. Brian Reitzell is usually her go-to music supervisor, although it's not clear yet whether...

Thanks to the San Francisco Film Society I recently had the pleasure of sitting at the feet of master sound designer Richard Beggs for an evening. He talked about his work with directors like Alfonso Cuaron, Spike Jonze, and Sofia Coppola, and showed a few clips of some of his best known films. We sat rapt at the famous opening montage of Apocalypse Now and he explained how Francis Ford Coppola was fascinated with the role technology played in the Vietnam War and how this affected his own approach to the soundtrack, like his idea to use a Moog to...
