The nearly 60-year long "Planet of the Apes" film series runs the gamut in terms of quality. You have a masterpiece like the original 1968 film directed by Franklin J. Schaffner, an utter catastrophe in the 2001 remake by Tim Burton, and everything in between. That being said, there's one thing that basically every film succeeds in, and that is the look of the apes themselves. Whether it's through revolutionary makeup techniques or extremely impressive performance capture technology, the rendering of these characters is distinctive and believable. Even the aforementioned 2001 catastrophe sports truly mind-blowing prosthetic work by Rick Baker that was rudely dismissed by the Academy.
As someone who is always going to prefer tactility in filmmaking, I gravitate more towards the makeup work than the performance capture, and it all comes from my admiration for the designs by John Chambers, who won an honorary Oscar for his work on "Planet of...

Picture this: you're deep in the woods, alone save for your family, enjoying the silent majesty of a secluded night in nature while all manner of creatures great and small slumber peacefully around you. Most importantly, you're snug inside a yellow sleeping bag, looking for all the world like a giant banana.
Then, suddenly and without warning, a mutant killer bear emerges from the woods, its gaping maw looking like it's melting as it bellows an unholy roar and attacks. Trapped in your banana bag, you helplessly try to run away like you're in the world's worst potato sack race. It's all for nought, as the bear reaches out with one measly swipe of its paw, and you fly through the air only to hit a rock and shatter into a million feathery pieces.

Thomas Burman has met many monsters over his career. Of course, he's often the one who created them. The pioneering artist, who will receive a lifetime achievement award from the Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild (Muahsg) on Jan. 11, is credited with coining the term "special makeup effects." His work spans films such as The Invasion of the Body Snatchers and Teen Wolf and TV shows like Grey's Anatomy and Nip/Tuck, earning him seven Emmys and one Oscar nom.

1968 was a huge year in film, especially for fans of science fiction, with the release of both Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey and Franklin J. Schaffner's Planet of the Apes.
The two movies couldn't be more different. While Kubrick's film is minimalist and quiet, Schaffner's is crowded, dirty, and loud. The pair capture the gamut of what science fiction could be and over the decades, they have become staples of the genre and key points of reference for film fans. Now a new documentary from William Conlin sets out to take us behind the scenes of one of the most important aspects of Planet of the Apes: the make-up.

Charlton Heston didn’t hesitate when producer Arthur Jacobs asked him to star in a new sci-fi film as an astronaut who crashes on a planet ruled by talking apes. "I liked the idea of the talking monkeys and a different civilization," said the actor of 1968’s Planet of the Apes. No studio went wild for the idea until producer Richard D. Zanuck and Jacobs convinced 20th Century Fox to give it a go. "It ended up being one of their biggest hits," Thomas R. Burman, a makeup tech on the film, raves to Closer. "Second to The Sound of Music!" (Photo Credit: Getty Images) The movie spawned four sequels, a TV series, and a 2001 reboot that revived the franchise. Andy Serkis, who played the chimp Caesar in the new films, says the original movie’s impact has lasted 50 years because it felt "prophetic and truthful. It’s such an...

Next to Universal, few studios have had such a big impact on horror than Rko Radio Pictures. Started in 1927, Rko was the first studio founded to make exclusively sound films, a then-brand-new invention that served as a major draw for the studio. Rko’s life was relatively short (it was killed just 30 years after forming), but during their time, they put out a seriously impressive number of classics, including Top Hat, It’s a Wonderful Life, The Informer, and most notably, Citizen Kane.
Of course, Rko didn’t shy away from horror. While their output wasn’t nearly as prolific as, say, Universal’s, it was still quite impressive, boasting some of the most formative and important horror films of old Hollywood. Rko saw the release of a few all-time classics, including I Walked With a Zombie, The Thing From Another World, King Kong, and the topic of today’s Crypt,...

The poster tagline states, “Heaven help us all when The Devil’S Rain!”, and if that grammatical train wreck doesn’t break your brain, I promise you the following 86 minutes will. The Devil’s Rain (1975) is a glorious curiosity, a personal favorite, and thanks to Severin Films’ spectacular new Blu-ray release, one of the best reissues I’ve ever seen.
Meet The Prestons: Mark (William Shatner – Kingdom of the Spiders), his mom (Ida Lupino – Junior Bonner), and their ranch hand John (Woody Chambliss – Gargoyles) all await the return of Mark’s dad, and when he finally shows up, his eyes are missing and he starts melting in the rain (how bad is the humidity in the desert, anyway?). Happy (almost) Halloween readers! With October 31st falling on the weekly home entertainment release day, that means we have extra reasons to get excited this Tuesday. Scream Factory has put together two absolutely incredible collector’s edition Blu-rays for George A. Romero’s underrated modern classic Land of the Dead as well as Zack Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead remake, which fans are going to want to add to their own personal collections.
For those of you who may have missed it in theaters, The Dark Tower comes home on Halloween, and Lionsgate has given the cult classic Slaughter High the Vestron Video treatment for their brand new Blu. Blue Underground is also keeping busy this week with a pair of Collector’s Edition sets, too—The Lift and Down—and the complete series of Orphan Black makes its home release bow on Halloween, too.

When I think of some of my favorite B films of the 1970s, my mind tends to drift towards the works of the late filmmaker William Girdler. This man made nine movies in six years before his tragic death in ’78 at the age of thirty; chief among them Abby (’74), Grizzly (’76), and Day of the Animals (’77). Now, quantity obviously doesn’t equal quality, and he made a few outright stinkers. But he was exciting to me because he became a better, more confident filmmaker with each film; this is especially evident with his final release, The Manitou (1978), your typical ancient Native American little person demon growing out of the back of a woman’s neck who fights the heroes in space with laser beams kind of flick. You know the type.
Independently produced, The Manitou was released by Avco Embassy in late April, with a June rollout across North America, and worldwide the following year.

Aging much better than a freezer burnt, half eaten cake, Happy Birthday to Me (1981) stands out as one of the better ones from the golden era of slashers, when the major studios weren’t afraid to throw some blood soaked (Canadian) coin at a B level concept, and in the process giving it some A list icing.
The Canadian ties? Filmed in Montreal when tax credits were still flying fast and furious, Happy was one of Columbia Pictures early ‘80s ventures into the horror world. (Graduation Day, released the same year, was the breadwinner of the two.) Recruiting the Canadian producing juggernaut of Andre Link and John Dunning (David Cronenberg’s cohorts on his mid ‘70s output, Shivers and Rabid), Columbia was guaranteed a good return on their investment. Of course, the Canuck connection doesn’t stop there – the cast includes such faces of Canadiana as Lawrence Dane (Scanners), Jack Blum...

Like many children growing up in the 1960s, Kenneth Hall loved monsters. Ever since he was a toddler, his mother — who was an especially big fan of Vincent Price — took him and his brother to see films like The Brides Of Dracula, Curse Of The Werewolf, and The Pit And The Pendulum. And that was all it took. At age 10, Hall discovered Famous Monsters of Filmland, and with the help of the trusty TV Guide, he and his brother made a point to watch as many of the films they read about as they could, even if it meant sneaking out of bed and staying up late to catch a showing of The Deadly Mantis. Like many Monster Kids of his time, there was a now-or-never mentality that came with a lack of home video, but growing up in Jacksonville, Fl did give Hall an extra advantage. It was the...

The horror landscape was changing by 1982. People were tiring of slashers; even the Halloween franchise decided to take a left (some would say wrong) turn away from Shatner masks and sharpened knives, and used the brand name to explore the holiday itself in the perpetually under-appreciated Season of The Witch. The genre seemed to be turning towards monsters, from large scale dread fests such as John Carpenter's The Thing to more intimate fare like Frank Henenlotter's Basket Case. The horror films of 1982 displayed a refreshing variety of ways to make audiences jump, squirm, gasp, smile, and when the occasion arose, vomit. The Beast Within giddily checks all the boxes.

“Look, the boogeyman can only come out on Halloween night, right?”
Sorry, Laurie, but this year Halloween came early. On September 23rd, horror fans near and far—myself included—rejoiced when Shout Factory / Scream Factory released a 10-disc (or 15-disc if you threw down the extra cash for the Deluxe Edition) Blu-ray box set containing every film in the Halloween franchise along with a wide array of bonus features. It’s time to lock your doors and hold on tight as I guide you through the night he came home… with me.
Before digging into the discs themselves, it is impossible not to acknowledge the beauty of the box that houses the discs. On one side, there is the classic jack-o-lantern which has become iconic to the Halloween franchise.
What is really worth noting is the Michael Myers artwork on the two opposite sides of the box.

Just in time for its 40th year anniversary, Shout Factory has amassed a glorious Blu-ray remastering of Brian De Palma’s 1974 classic, Phantom of the Paradise. A glam-rock musical that’s enjoyed a sizeable cult following after an initial muted theatrical release, it represents the filmmaker’s most enjoyable attempt at comedy in this vintage satire about consumerism vs. creative control.
On the eve of unveiling his glam rock palace The Paradise, cutthroat music mogul Swan is struggling with how to open with just the right song to be performed by doo-wop group the Juicy Fruits (modeled after Sha Na Na). When Swan hears the music of aspiring singer songwriter Winslow Leach (William Finely, a De Palma regular), he decides he wants his music, an epic cantata modernizing Faust, but not the man. I don’t like musicals. In fact, I’d go as far as to say that I hate musicals. Even that one that you think I should see because it just might change my mind, no, I probably hate it. I couldn’t understand why everybody flipped over Repo. I watched it and wanted to turn it off the entire time. I never watched Johnny Depp in Sweeney Todd, I didn’t even bother watching Devil’s Carnival. The extent of my enjoyment of the musical ends in things like South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut, Cannibal the Musical, The Wall, and that’s pretty much it. When I saw that Scream Factory were releasing Phantom of the Paradise, I had mixed emotions. I love Scream, so naturally I want to support one of their releases, and I love De Palma, so of course I want to see one...

I’ll admit two things. Number one, I’ve never seen Phantom of the Paradise before. I’ve known of its existence, but I have yet to take it in. Number Two, I’m not the worlds biggest musical fan, even when it deals with subject matter that interests me, but I’m willing to give anything a shot. Especially if it’s coming from my favorite Blu-ray label, Scream Factory. The company has announced the extras that will be available on the disc, and they look to be plentiful. I’m looking forward to giving this one a shot when it hits on August 5th. Check out the press release below.

In the late ‘70s and early ’80s, in the wake of Halloween’s record-setting success, producers were madly scrambling to grab any remaining holidays to center their own slasher movie around. As slasher films typically hinge on payback for some perceived (or actual) past betrayal or wrong, Valentine’s Day – a day famous for fostering bitter disappointments and hurt feelings – was an ideal candidate for the slasher treatment.
One of several slasher productions made in Canada in the early ‘80s (along with Prom Night, Happy Birthday to Me and Terror Train), My Bloody Valentine proved easy for slasher buffs to adore, even if the MPAA – then on a crusade to neuter the new wave of splatter films – demanded heavy cuts be made before it awarded Mbv an R-rating. To have the film released with all its bloodshed intact would’ve been nice but what makes Mbv work is its attention...

The definition of a slasher film varies depending on who you ask, but in general, it contains several specific traits that feed into the genre’s formula. Author Vera Dika rather strictly defines the sub-genre in her book Games of Terror by only including films made between 1978 and 1984. In other words, she saw it as a movement. When someone describes Brick, they don’t define it as a noir, but instead neo-noir . In other words, it’s a modern motion picture that prominently utilizes elements of film noir, but with updated themes, content, style, visual elements or media that were absent in those from the 1940s and 1950s. So does one consider Scream a slasher film or a neo-slasher, or simply put, a modern slasher?
Some consider Thirteen Women to be the earliest slasher – released all the way back in 1932. Personally I think that is rubbish. Thirteen Women is more like Desperate Housewives on sedatives.

Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-o-Rama, Assault of the Killer Bimbos, Dr. Alien, Puppet Master III: Toulon's Revenge, Ghost Writer, Circuitry Man, Creepozoids, Dream A Little Evil, Nightmare Sisters, etc. These are all films that 80's horror fans grew up watching either through USA's Up All Night, though Cinemax or Showtime, through their love of either Linnea Quigley or Brinke Stevens, or through looking through the seemingly endless shelves at the good old video stores of yesteryear. Royce Mathew was involved in every single one of these films functioning, as he put it himself, either through "custodial work and production assisting - to (in no order) writing, editing, costumes, props, art direction, construction, directing, producing, sound, special effects and publicity". We took a moment to pick apart Royce's brain on working on all these legendary B movies and then got a bit serious to let him discuss an ongoing legal...

This past Friday, the 13th of August, I had the pleasure of chatting with Friday the 13th Part VI director Tom McLoughlin**. Jason Lives was discussed of course (and how adorable is it that McLoughlin still has Jason’s headstone in his backyard?), but only briefly as the topic of the day was the 30th anniversary of McLoughlin’s much adored spookshow One Dark Night.
Seems the writer/director noticed our recent One Dark Night retrospective here and dropped DC a line to chat about the film and what its creator has been up to lately.
Though the flick always had has its fans, I’ve often wondered how a bloodless supernatural thriller managed to score funding during the Sea of Slashers Era. “When we finally did get the money, [it] actually came from a Mormon businessman who needed a tax shelter instantly,” recalls McLoughlin. “It was like, ‘Can you get...

With the second annual and highly anticipated horror convention Monsterpalooza – The Art of Monsters returning Friday, April 9–11, 2010, to The Marriott Burbank Airport Hotel in Burbank, CA (get your tickets here now, and how could you not, when they’re only $20 a day?), Dread caught up with the con’s creator, Eliot Brodsky, to talk about the F/X and monster-heavy event.
“Monsterpalooza was a glimmer of an idea back in 2007,” Brodsky told us of the show’s conception. “I actually did a very sized-down version of the show on the East Coast in 2008. It was in conjunction with Monster-Mania as a display museum.”
While other horror conventions seem to primarily focus on the stars of the genre (and this year’s Monsterpalooza isn’t slacking in that department by any means, as Brodsky’s organized a Return of the Living Dead reunion panel with the principals from that classic), the...

While MGM’s recent Pumpkinhead DVD celebrates one of Stan Winston’s greatest triumphs outside of his usual role of FX creator, this new disc reveals a chapter in his filmmaking history that has gone, if not unseen, than largely unacknowledged. One reason for that is the fact that while Winston shares a story billing on the actual movie with fellow makeup master Tom Burman and director Peter Foleg, the writing credits in The Unseen’s ad and press material, and thus almost all of the film’s reviews, and even the billing block on the DVD case cite Foleg and three different co-scribes (among them Texas Chainsaw Massacre veteran Kim Henkel). Oh. My. Forget everything you heard about New York having a rat problem. The West Coast is about to get a taste of rodent sized mayhem!
This is just so stupendously silly and whacked that you can’t Not post about it. Jeff Leroy, the writer, director, cinematographer and editor of the upcoming giant monsters take over the city and mayhem ensues movie Rat Scratch Fever dropped off a trailer over at Fangoria. Astronauts employed by the Steel Space Corporation land on a distant planet. They are attacked by giant rats who hitch a ride on board the spaceship back home. The giant rats then wreak havoc on a small scale model Los Angeles with explosive results! New Yorkers celebrate through the night.
Okay, I added that last bit but if it’s in the movie consider me psychic and I’ll be taking donations for lottery tickets in the future.
