Nicolas Roeg’s Don’t Look Now is driven by a crushing sense of emotional desolation. The phrase “psychic thriller,” which was used to market the film, is technically true, but misleading, given that psychics are normally used by directors as springboards for action set pieces or as agents for ushering forth the explicit arrival of ghosts. There are certainly ghosts in Don’t Look Now, and maybe even the kind that populate traditional horror stories, but the prevailing specters here are those that people come to know through disappointment or tragedy as allusions to things lost or desired, which have a way of suddenly opening mental portals to the past, and, in the case of this film and quite a bit of supernatural fiction, the future. Don’t Look Now suggests a ghost story that Faulkner may have written, as it offers characters who’re at the mercy of their streams of consciousness.

May on the Criterion Channel will be good to the auteurs. In fact they’re giving Richard Linklater better treatment than the distributor of his last film, with a 13-title retrospective mixing usual suspects—the Before trilogy, Boyhood, Slacker—with some truly off the beaten track. There’s a few shorts I haven’t seen but most intriguing is Heads I Win/Tails You Lose, the only available description of which calls it a four-hour (!) piece “edited together by Richard Linklater in 1991 from film countdowns and tail leaders from films submitted to the Austin Film Society in Austin, Texas from 1987 to 1990. It is Linklater’s tribute to the film countdown, used by many projectionists over the years to cue one reel of film after another when switching to another reel on another projector during projection.” Pair that with 2008’s Inning by Inning: A Portrait of a Coach and your completionism will be on-track.

Laemmle’s Ahrya Fine Arts Theatre in Los Angeles will be presenting a 45th anniversary screening of Nicholas Roeg’s masterful 1973 thriller Don’t Look Now. The 110-minute film stars Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie as recently bereaved parents struggling to cope with the loss of their daughter, based upon the short story of the same name by author Daphne du Maurier and published in the 1971 story collection “Not After Midnight.”

Do we sometimes ‘grow into’ movies? This one now plays like a minor masterpiece. ‘Seventies auteur Robert Altman proves himself an expert practitioner of psychological hallucinations, in an intense tale of a schizophrenic children’s author who can’t keep her husband and two (imagined?) lovers sorted out. It’s one of the best, and best-looking puzzle pictures ever.

David Stratton is the curator and patron of the inaugural Great Britain Retro Film Festival. Nineteen classic British films, rarely seen on the big screen, will feature in the festival from August 6-19 at the Hayden Orpheum Cremorne, Melbourne's Cinema Nova and the Windsor in Perth. The first time I saw Nicolas Roeg's Don't Look Now was October 2008, as I was watching a slew of films in an effort to put together a list of my top ten scariest films. In the end, I came up with six, Don't Look Now wasn't one of them. I mention this because I initially watched this movie under the impression it was tremendously frightening. I had never seen it before, but everything I read about it spoke to how terrifying it was. I didn't find it frightening in the least, not then and not now. However, revisiting it with this new Criterion Blu-ray release gave me a chance to watch it with different eyes and I found myself appreciating it a bit more. Granted, I still can't bring myself to say I'm an overall fan of the picture, but watching it without the expectation it will be something it isn't,...

Suffice to say, this is a film I've grown to really love since first seeing it and heartily recommend you check it out.

So the phone rings, and I answer it, and it's Mel Brooks. That's an actual thing that happened. That's now something I can say. And even better, the 40 minute conversation that followed me answering the phone is one of my favorites in recent memory. How often do you get to talk to a comedy legend about one of the pinnacle moments of not only their career, but of film comedy in general? I was told I'd have about 15 minutes originally. The Malibu Film Society’s fourth season is coming to an end. Marking the 35th anniversary of the filming of The Stunt Man, the film will be screened on May 18, 2013 and will have guest appearances by actors Steve Railsback, Barbara Hershey, and writer/director Richard Rush.
Featuring one of the funniest, most cynical scripts ever written about the Hollywood filmmaking process, The Stunt Man has one of the strangest and most twisted histories of any film ever made. After its completion, Fox sat on it for two years – only to finally release it to just 11 theaters. But, despite the studio’s efforts to bury it, the film went on to gross twice its production cost – and then picked up three Academy Award nominations (for Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Best Actor – Peter O’Toole). It’s no wonder then that The Stunt Man has since become a cult classic.

One could not imagine such a torrent of melodic invention pouring forth with such vibrant intensity if he was not enraptured by the cinematic experience: the darkened periphery of the auditoria; the hushed reverence of another world; the minutiae of human emotion playing out on the big screen. Everything he did, from The Beat to Enigma, represented a direct and synchronous passion for lyrical expression alongside the visual language of film.

Originally released in 1973 as part of a double feature with The Wicker Man (now how amazing would that have been!?), Don’t Look Now has gone on to be considered one of the greatest British horror films ever released. Resplendent with an unnerving atmosphere from start to finish, coupled with an extremely symbolic style, artistic director Nicolas Roeg has created a film that remains unsettling to this very day. The team at Optimum Releasing have painstakingly upgraded the film to a full high definition experience, that whilst not free from imperfection is proficient enough to add a new element to the classic tale.
