In the last days of 2022, we learned that production had wrapped on the psychedelic horror film The Trip, which stars an impressive line-up of genre icons and regulars: Hannah Fierman (V/H/S/), Doug Bradley (Hellraiser), John Amplas (George A. Romero’s Martin), and Lori Cardille (Romero’s Day of the Dead). The presence of Amplas and Cardille in this film seemed especially fitting since The Trip was filmed in Pennsylvania, not far from Romero’s beloved Pittsburgh. Nearly ten months later, The Trip is now ready to start making its way out into the world – and the premiere is going to be held at the Lindsay Theater in Sewickley, Pennsylvania on October 26th! In anticipation of the premiere, a trailer has arrived online, and you can check it out in the embed above.

Production recently wrapped on the psychedelic horror film The Trip, which stars an impressive line-up of genre icons and regulars. The cast includes Hannah Fierman (V/H/S/), Doug Bradley (Hellraiser), John Amplas (George A. Romero’s Martin), and Lori Cardille (Romero’s Day of the Dead). Written and directed by Dean Jacobs, The Trip has been described as “Deliverance meets The Amityville Horror, with just a dash of hallucinogenic drugs!” Another description says its “one part haunted house story, one part slasher film”, and repeats the “just a dash of hallucinogenic drugs” line. Here’s the synopsis: Four childhood friends take a weekend trip to a rural farmhouse in Pennsylvania. Expecting a relaxing weekend of excess, the group soon comes to find out, the house has something else planned.

A quick glance at its supporting cast — a lineup that includes such notables as Mickey Rourke, Lou Diamond Phillips, Penelope Ann Miller and Sean Astin — might lead you to suspect “Adverse” has only recently been retrieved from a time capsule originally sealed in the mid-to-late 1990s. And, indeed, if it weren’t for the occupation of the protagonist — he’s a rideshare driver, not a cabbie — and the abundance of smartphone text messaging, director Brian A. Metcalf’s modestly diverting thriller probably could pass for a direct-to-video concoction from that era. There’s something positively meta going on here, though you may have to be a hard-core B-movie buff to fully appreciate it.

Movies about the blacklist aren’t common, probably because as Robert Vaughn wrote, the period produced no happy stories, ‘Only Victims.’ Robert de Niro, Annette Bening and George Wendt give a bite of immediacy to the way the blacklist upset careers and blighted lives. Few of us would like to be publicly branded an Enemy of the People, but doing so seems to be America’s number one spectator sport.

Two aspiring filmmakers pick the wrong scream queen in Mitchell Altieri's riff on torture porn and hunger for fame, A Beginner's Guide to Snuff. Kidnapping an actress on the theory that her performance in a fabricated snuff flick will be more believable if she thinks it's real, they get more than a little confused themselves, soon bumbling into real peril. Though less clever than it thinks it is, the movie has a light enough attitude to please some genre fans once it slides into its afterlife on home-vid.

It’s safe to say I’m a fan of the films of Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton. Between them, the duo have written and/or directed some fun fear flicks: Feast and it’s sequels (which I truly adore), Saw 4 – 7 and the fantastic pairing of The Collector and The Collection. It’s been four years since the latter film, their last feature, and now they’re back with The Neighbour – which also marks the Third time the filmmakers have worked with actor Josh Stewart.

Newcastle United midfielder Moussa Sissoko “is not going anywhere” this summer, despite constant media reports linking him with a move to Liverpool.
Speculation has been rife this summer about Sissoko’s future on Tyneside, with Arsenal, Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea and the Reds all credited with an interest in the France international.
However, The Telegraph’s North East reporter Luke Edwards took to Twitter over the weekend to claim that “there is absolutely no truth” in the reports linking Sissoko with a move to Anfield this summer.

The Wizard
Directed by Todd Holland
Screenplay by David Chisholm
1989, USA
Although e-sports have long been a part of video game culture since the early 70′s, competitions saw a large surge in popularity in 1989 when Universal Pictures produced The Wizard, about a trio of kids who make their way to a national Nintendo video game championship (Video Armageddon) for a grand prize of $50,000. The charismatic and rising star of television’s Wonder Years, Fred Savage, stars as Corey, a boy who escorts his deeply traumatized younger half-brother Jimmy (Luke Edwards) away from a group home and sets off on a cross-country trek, chased by their father (Beau Bridges), their older brother (Christian Slater), and a child-finder, hired by their mother to bring him back home. Along the way they meet little Haley (Jenny Lewis) and discover that Jimmy is a real prodigy when it comes to video games. They make a stop off in Reno,...

Twenty-five years ago this week, the Fred Savage movie The Wizard hit theaters. For many '80s babies, this was required viewing - either to see a first glimpse of the yet-to-be-released Super Mario Bros. 3 or to see what the Wonder Years star looked like in contemporary clothes. Critics, however, dismissed this video-gaming, road trip movie as a showcase for Nintendo products. Roger Ebert's review began on a sharply sarcastic note: "This is a movie that has everything going for it, except for a good script, a believable premise and common sense." Today, The Wizard stands as a reminder...

Older generations may not recall The Wizard, but I do, since it was aimed right at my demographic. For one thing, it starred Fred Savage, a kid my age I saw each week on The Wonder Years. • Boardwalk Empire actor Jack Huston will take the chariot reins as the title role in the upcoming remake of Ben-Hur. Previously, Tom Hiddleston had been in talks for the role of slave Judah Ben-Hur in the Paramount and MGM picture. Timur Bekmambetov (Wanted) is directing the film adapted by John Ridley (12 Years a Slave) and Keith Clarke (The Way Back) that is said to be based more on Lew Wallace’s 1880 novel Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ than the 1959 film that starred Charlton Heston. Morgan Freeman has already been cast as Ildarin, the teacher who helps make the slave Ben-Hur into chariot racer champion.

For some of the oldsters out there they may recall the 1973 Gamble & Huff-produced R&B hit single “I’ll Always Love My Mama” by the musical group The Intruders. This musical anthem was certainly a lyrical tribute to caring mothers and how their sacrifices shaped our childhood and adulthood. This finger-snapping song definitely captured the spirit of motherly guidance.
Naturally film has had its share of depicting motherhood over the decades. In fact, mothers of all types are presented before our eyes in packages of being nurturing, notorious, nutty, naive and nonsensical. However, there is something so special about the mother-son relationship that rivals the father-daughter dynamic. We have our share of proud Mama’s boys out there roaming about in society.

Now that rumours surrounding Alan Pardew’s future as Newcastle have been quelled the Magpies are now pressing ahead with their summer recruitment plans – and it’s understood they’ve already got one player in the bag.
That is the news coming from Luke Edwards in the Telegraph this morning who says “the club believe they will be able to announce the first of several new signings in the next few days and expect to have the majority of their recruitment done before the World Cup.”
After being deprived of a permanent signing across two transfer windows scepticism will naturally run wild. However, should it prove to be true, it will prove a tangible step towards strengthening a squad that is poised to be stripped of its fringe contingent during pre-season.

With its silly and sentimental storyline, it's fair to say that this 1989 family film is not exactly Oscar-worthy. In fact, even a Razzie would be too generous. But because it cheerfully combines the two things I was most obsessed with in the 1980s and early 90s Nintendo and Christian Slater it can't help but push my buttons.
The titular "wizard" is a troubled young boy, played by Luke Edwards. Jimmy has many problems stemming from a complicated family life and a harrowing backstory that has left him barely able to utter a complete sentence. Unhappy with his lot and faced with being committed to an institution, he waves goodbye to his native Utah and sets off for California with his older brother and a feisty runaway in tow.

It's hard to believe "Newsies" has been around since 1992. Directed by choreographer Kenny Ortega (who you can also thank for the the "High School Musical" series), the film was a major box office flop, but later gained a cult following on home video. Now, it's been turned into a Broadway musical that has earned eight Tony Award nominations, including Best Musical, winning Best Choreography and Best Original Score.

The promotor is a sinister creep, but they take the stage anyway, lose their bass player, have a fan flash them the goods, and keep thrashing even though the majority of the audience is comprised of hell beasts. By the time an arm gets ripped off, everything seems blood-thirstily clear. These power chord slingers are a human sacrifice. With reverb from 80s punk classics like Return of the Living Dead, this short from Dan Riesser uses a cool crew of characters, flashy editing and some grisly gore to craft a hell of a good movie. Plus, the song “Lawnmower Massacre” is pretty damned catchy, and the film answer the question of what happened to Luke Edwards, the kid who beat “Super Mario 3″ in The Wizard. Apparently he joined a punk band and got attacked...

Just in time for the Halloween season (any bets on how often we'll be saying that before October 31st?), Irrational Films has made Dan Riesser's horror-comedy short film Night of the Punks available for viewing, and we have it in its entirety right here.
From the Press Release:
In Night of the Punks, small-town punk rockers The Brain Deads have their first out of town show, but there are a few problems: The venue is deserted, the promoter is a creep, their bassist has gone missing, and the only kids in the audience turn out to be bloodthirsty punk rockers from Hell.
Drawing inspiration from Return of the Living Dead, Night of the Demons, and the Evil Dead series, Night of the Punks is a blood-splatted love letter to '80s horror cinema. The cast includes industry veteran Luke Edwards (The Wizard, Little Big League, Newsies), sketch comedian Nick Munday,...

As YouTube networks solidify and creators begin making actual paychecks, it’s easy to forget about the passion filled collaborative days of YouTube’s yesteryear that helped to build some of the site’s biggest fan bases. YouTubers working with YouTubers was a powerful tool that not only grew audiences, but gave content creators an opportunity to have fun working with fellow talent. Yes, collabs certainly still happen, but it feels like they’re happening less so between individuals represented by different YouTube networks. Thankfully, though, we have a show like The Stooges to further remind us people are still working together and it doesn’t always have to be all about the Benjamin’s (not that there’s anything wrong if it is). Shot on a modest budget bumping $10K, the series features YouTube stars Eric Pumphrey of Reckless Tortuga and Rawn Erickson (HiimRawn) of Maker Studios, as well as Luke Edwards,...

Thousands of women and girls around the country are simultaneously squealing at the news that "Newsies" is coming to Broadway, reports the AP. The show will begin a limited run in March 2012.
Frankly, we're a little surprised the popular 1992 Disney movie musical starring Christian Bale and David Moscow hadn't been made into a musical before now.
The movie tells the tale of the real-life child newspaper sellers in 1899 New York City who go on strike. Alan Menken and Jack Feldman, who did the music and lyrics for the movie, have teamed up for the Broadway version as well, alongside new story writer Harvey Fierstein.
According to the AP, the new version will keep all the old favorites - "King of New York," "The World Will Know," "Carrying the Banner" and "Seize the Day" - but will also add a young female reporter to the storyline.

Whether you’re trying to avoid the releases this week or augment them with even more movie, Your Alternate Box Office offers some options for movies that would play perfectly alongside of (or instead of) the stuff studios are shoving into the megaplex this weekend. This week features a foul-mouthed alien, proof that taking pills making you better, Matthew McConaughey refusing to leave his vehicle to practice law, and a schlubby wrestling coach. The Wizard (1989) Double Feature With: Paul The Pitch: There have been a lot of alien movies to pair with lately, so it all seemed a little exhausting. Instead of the other-worldly tip, here’s another road trip movie with just as much if not more geek cred. Fred Savage and Jenny Lewis (the Simon Pegg and Nick Frost of their day) take young Luke Edwards on the road to a massive video game competition where he inexplicably knows how to grab warp whistles before...

This week's Bad Movie We Love teems with 2010 Oscar bait and the energy of a billion Gleebasers: It's Newsies, mistah! Jawnalism's finest musical! It's got ink on its fingahs! And Christian Bale's undying shame, too. Yes, Mr. Batman, The Fighter's best supporting actor, starred in Disney's 1992 flop about the newsboy strike of 1899 when he was just 18-years-old. He was joined by fellow Oscar buzzee Robert Duvall, Bill Pullman, kiddie legends like Luke Edwards and David Moscow, and -- mysteriously -- Ann-Margret. Read all about it! Costs a penny, yeh maniac.
