Ethan Coen’s latest solo project just shifted into high gear, showing its first trailer at CinemaCon 2023.
“Drive-Away Dolls,” a road movie about restless best friends and hapless crooks, is the latest from the co-director of modern classics “No Country for Old Men,” “Inside Llewyn Davis” and “Fargo.”
During the Focus Features section of Universal’s presentation at the annual convention of movie theater owners, the audience was served up a sleek and sexy road noir with a major ensemble: Margaret Qualley and Geraldine Viswanathan leading, along with Beanie Feldstein, Pedro Pascal, Colman Domingo, Bill Camp and Matt Damon.
Coen, on his own without longtime collaborator and brother Joel, directed and co-wrote the script with Tricia Cooke. The movie follows Jamie, a free spirit mourning her latest breakup, and Marian, a wallflower in desperate need of adventure. The pair embark on a spontaneous trip to Tallahassee, but things quickly go...

Jordan Peele debuted on the horror scene with Get Out back in 2017, which won him the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. The film was also nominated in the Best Motion Picture of the Year, Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role, and Best Achievement in Directing categories, and Peele is hoping to return to the Academy Awards with his third horror movie.
Unquestionably one of this year’s best, Jordan Peele’s Nope is getting a full-on Oscar campaign from Universal Pictures, with the film receiving a new “For Your Consideration” trailer today.
Peele’s Nope is seeking consideration in “all eligible categories” for next year’s Academy Awards, and it’s not hard to imagine the film getting nominations in several categories. For starters, Best Original Screenplay, Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role, and Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role nominations are surely on the table.

The Directors Guild has nominated Richard Linklater, Alejandro G. Inarritu, Morten Tyldum, Wes Anderson and Clint Eastwood as the best feature-film directors of 2014, the DGA announced on Tuesday.
Linklater was nominated for “Boyhood,” Inarritu for “Birdman,” Tyldum for “The Imitation Game,” Anderson for “The Grand Budapest Hotel” and Eastwood for “American Sniper.”
The Eastwood nomination was the most surprising of the group, with the veteran director and four-time DGA nominee beating out David Fincher for “Gone Girl,” James Marsh for “The Theory of Everything,” Christopher Nolan for “Interstellar” and, most notably, Ava DuVernay for “Selma,” a late-breaking film that has...

The Directors Guild of America (DGA) is notable in the season for a number of reasons. First, it's a massive voting body unlike most on the circuit, so their nominations choices can often hint toward consensus. Second, their winner very often goes on to win the Academy Award for Best Director, which as we all know tends to presage the Best Picture Oscar. But... ...one wonders how those two elements are being viewed as of late. After all, the last two years have seen a split, once by necessity ("Argo" director Ben Affleck was not nominated), the second time in a close race. Could it be that the Academy will start looking at these categories differently rather than as a package deal? Maybe, maybe not. I have no real answers there. I'm just asking the question. Anyway, the DGA nominated mostly expected names today. Clint Eastwood, naturally. "American Sniper" is cruising.

The Directors Guild of America announced its nominees Tuesday for its annual Feature Film award, and the list contains a few surprises.
Wes Anderson continues to gain momentum for an eventual Oscar nomination for "The Grand Budapest Hotel," snagging a DGA nom for the first time in his career. And Clint Eastwood, who was snubbed by the Golden Globes, made a triumphant return to the DGAs, earning a nod for "American Sniper," his fourth overall nomination from the organization.
One notable exclusion from the list is "Selma" director Ava DuVernay, whose film was also snubbed by the Screen Actors Guild. David Fincher, once considered an Oscar lock for "Gone Girl," was also absent.
The rest of the DGA Feature Film nominees were Richard Linklater ("Boyhood"), Alejandro González Iñárritu ("Birdman"), and Morten Tyldum ("The Imitation Game"). The full list from the DGA, including each nominee's directorial team, is below. Nominations for...

This might just be the closest we ever get to the mighty Michael Keaton playing a superhero again. The former Batman is set to star in Alejandro Gonzalez Innaritu's (21 Grams, Babel) ensemble comedy drama Birdman for Fox Searchlight and New Regency. The story deals with an actor who played a superhero back in his heyday deciding to put on a play on Broadway based on a short story by Raymond Carver. Things don't go to plan however when his egotistical lead actor threatens to hamstring the production. Deadline have just announced that Edward Norton will play that character, and they'll be joined by Emma Stone, Naomi Watts and Zach Galifianakis. Quite a cast eh? Back in June, the Coen Brothers dropped a few tidbits on their upcoming film while being interviewed by Noah Baumbach, saying that it would be set in the 1960s New York folk scene and that it would feature live music performances. Now that StudioCanal has announced they will co-finance the film, a little more information has come to light. The film is entitled Inside Llewyn Davis and will be adapted from the "posthumous memoir The Mayor of MacDougal Street by folk singer Dave van Ronk, a central figure in New York-based folk revival of the 1960s." In addition, we now know that Scott Rudin and Robert Graf will come on board as producers. They've previously worked with the Coens on True Grit and No Country for Old Men. Inside Llewyn Davis is sounding like more and more of a departure for the Coens, although with O Brother, Where Art Thou?...

The Coen brothers long-rumored project about a struggling 1960s folk musician is finally taking shape. A spokesperson for the Oscar-winning filmmakers confirms a Variety report that StudioCanal is co-financing Inside Llewyn Davis. Though the film still lacks a distributor, producers Scott Rudin and Robert Graf, who also worked on True Grit and No Country for Old Men, are involved. In June, it was confirmed that the musical film will be set in Greenwich Village during the height of the folk-music scene.

The Coen Brothers, fresh off the triumph of True Grit, are plowing ahead with their next film, a heavily fictionalized account of the life of Dave Van Ronk, a central figure in the Greenwich Village folk-music-revival scene of the 1960s. The film, Inside Llewyn Davis (a protagonist name almost as much fun to say as "Rooster Cogburn") doesn't have a release date, but the Coens are set to direct and produce along with Scott Rudin and Robert Graf, the same pair that joined them for True Grit. Dave Van Ronk, informally known as the "Mayor of MacDougal Street," was deeply influential on the 1960s folk revival. He befriended and helped other folkies like Phil Ochs, Ramblin' Jack Elliott, Joni Mitchell, and a scrawny Minnesotan you might be peripherally familiar with thanks to his recent Christmas album, Bob Dylan. Hopefully the film sheds a little [...]...

I think it is pretty unanimous to say that the Coen Brothers are probably the greatest directors of our generation. Fargo, The Big Lebowski, No Country for Old Men, A Serious Man, and True Grit, and that is only the tip of the iceberg. Now Variety is reporting that the directing duo will be working on a film called Inside Llewyn Davis. The story, also written by the Coens, follows Llewyn Davis as he navigates the folk scene in 1960s New York City. Scott Rudin and Robert Graf will act as producers for this biopic with Graf acting as executive producer.
The Coen Brothers, Rudin, and Graf have worked together on the Academy Award nominated True Grit, which was both a commercial and critical success. And this is not the first time that the Coen Brothers dealt this musical themes. The brothers previously directed O Brother Where Art Thou, which...

The first details have emerged on "Inside Llewyn Davis", a new project written, produced and directed by the Coen brothers says Variety.
The story centers around Llewyn Davis' struggles as a folk musician during the genre's 1960s heyday in New York City. It's rumoured to be a fictionalized account of singer Dave van Ronk. The script is an original one by the Coens, and no distributor has yet been set.
StudioCanal will co-finance, Scott Rudin will produce and Robert Graf will executive produce. The quartet previously all worked together on the Coens' "True Grit" and "No Country for Old Men".

[1] Like so many film geeks, I'm an ardent admirer of the Coen Brothers (obviously [2]), so I'm thrilled to reveal that a couple of interesting new tidbits have dropped about their next feature. Earlier this summer, the Coens revealed that their next movie would be based on the '60s folk scene in New York's Greenwich Village, and apparently that project is starting to come together. A recent announcement that StudioCanal would be co-financing and handling international sales for the film revealed the title, as well as slightly more detail about the plot. Read more after the jump. Variety [3]reports that the film will be called Inside Llewyn Davis. Scott Rudin is set to produce the picture with Robert Graf as executive producer. The combination of Rudin, Graf, and the...
