Vashon Film Institute has set the date for the third annual Vashon Island Film Festival, which is slated to take place Aug. 8-11. The announcement comes with the launch of two new divisions of the Vashon Film Institute and a new donation arm, which accepts restricted funds to be used solely to fund improvements at the Vashon Theatre.
Vfi’s new divisions are the Quartermaster Lab, a collective of filmmaking programs, and VFIpresents, its sales, distribution and release division, which will also focus on organizing community events outside Viff.
“The quintessential goal in founding Vfi was to support independent filmmaking in the Pacific Northwest,” said Mark Mathias Sayre, founder of Vashon Film Institute. “To that end, Viff has already brought compelling indie features and documentaries to local audiences and will continue to do so. But that’s only part of the game plan: We’re equally committed to engendering the...

Miky Lee, vice chair of Korean media giant Cj, is set to give the USC School of Cinematic Arts 2024 commencement address, organizers said Tuesday.
As a pioneer of the Korean movie wave, Lee has championed Korean directors like Park Chan-wook and Bong Joon Ho, and has executive producer credits that include Lady Vengeance, The Host, Snowpiercer, The Handmaiden and Parasite, the latter of which was the first non-English-language film to win the Oscar for best picture.

The Breakthrough Prize Ceremony, also known as “the Oscars of Science,” is an awards show unlike any other.
Founded and funded by Silicon Valley titan Yuri Milner and his artist wife Julia Milner, Google co-founder Sergey Brin, 23andMe co-founder Anne Wojcicki, and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and his Chan-Zuckerberg Initiative co-founder Priscilla Chan, the Breakthrough Prize recognizes “scientists changing the world” with award statuettes and sizable cash prizes. And on Saturday night, at the ceremony’s 10th edition — the second in a row held on the roof of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, with the Hollywood Hills glistening in the background — presenters, performers and audience members included a collection of A-listers that could give the Oscars a run for their money.
One could turn left and spot Bill Gates and Robert Downey Jr. sitting at the same table, or right and find tablemates Bradley Cooper and Rupert Murdoch schmoozing.

After the March 28 friends, family, and industry screening for Francis Ford Coppola’s “Megalopolis” at Universal’s CityWalk AMC in IMAX, reactions were wild. Some said it was his most ambitious film since “Apocalypse Now;” another described it to Puck as “batshit crazy.” Made for $120 million and bankrolled entirely by Coppola through the sale of one of his vineyards, it incorporates new VFX techniques — ones, the filmmakers hope, will be seen on the biggest screens possible.
For that to happen, it will need a major theatrical deal and the filmmakers are now in talks with distributors and major studios. However, those entities have been particularly risk averse these days — and while Coppola is a legend, he hasn’t made a commercial success in three decades.
The film’s stars include Adam Driver, Aubrey Plaza, and Giancarlo Esposito; maybe, say, Paramount or Universal want to be back in the Coppola business.

Exclusive: After taking on Sigmund Freud in Sony Pictures Classics’ Freud’s Last Session, Academy Award winner has been set to star in Eyes in the Trees, a reimagining of the classic H.G. Wells novel The Island of Dr. Moreau, from director Timothy Woodward Jr.
In the film, Hopkins portrays a geneticist who has been isolated after the government stopped funding his research following the violent outbreak of one of his test subjects. A seminal work of science fiction published in 1896, The Island of Dr. Moreau has inspired numerous screen adaptations over the years, including 1932’s Island of Lost Souls and 1977’s The Island of Dr. Moreau starring Burt Lancaster. Most famous among them is the 1996 film of the same name,...

People starting the movie Spaceman would be forgiven for thinking that their Netflix had glitched. Yes, we do see Adam Sandler’s character Jakub dressed in a space suit. But he’s not floating through the cosmos. He’s walking through a wooded stream, the greenery of the trees and bushes reflecting off his mask.
What the heck does this have to do with being a space man, one might ask? By the end of the movie, directed by Johan Renck and written by Colby Day (adapting the novel Spaceman of Bohemia by Jaroslav Kalfař), Spaceman answers all your questions. Or rather, Jakub’s new friend, an alien spider named Hanuš, explains everything in the gentle, dulcet tones of Paul Dano.
Spaceman‘s strange, but ultimately clear, approach may frustrate some viewers. It may excite others, leaving them wanting to watch more sci-fi movies with a surrealist approach. Regardless of...

If a certain kind of sci-fi film is anything to go on, what humanity is most likely to discover, as we venture out on our second space race, is some aspect of ourselves. In Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar, Matthew McConaughey falls into a black hole only to find a multidimensional mirror into his own failures as a father. In James Gray’s Ad Astra, Brad Pitt goes to Jupiter and beyond to find peace with his dad. As far back as Andrei Tarkovsky’s Solaris, an alien planet manifests the memories of the astronauts who discover it. Even the cosmic trip of Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey stages a return to origins of sorts.
In Johan Renck’s Spaceman, Adam Sandler becomes just the latest lonely spacefarer to have the abyss confront him with an uncanny reflection of himself. This story of an existentialist voyage to the stars,...

January is one of the biggest months of the year for independent film, with hundreds of film critics descending upon the Sundance Film Festival to discover the works of up-and-coming directors. But for those of us who can’t make the trek to Park City, Utah, there are plenty of independent movies to enjoy from the comfort of our homes.
This month, there’s a particularly big selection of independent classics to choose from on streaming, particularly if you’re subscribed to the Criterion Channel. In celebration of the approaching festival, Criterion is hosting a massive selection of past Sundance favorites, including the 1968 experimental documentary “Symbiopsychotaxiplasm: Take One.” Other favorites in the selection include “Blood Simple,” “Stranger Than Paradise,” “The Times of Harvey Milk,” “Desert Hearts,” “Working Girls,” “Paris Is Burning,” “Mississippi Masala,” “Slacker,” “Hoop Dreams,” and “The Doom Generation.” Other major indie favorites on the streamer this January include...

All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt (Raven Jackson)
A film that feels uprooted from deep beneath the earth, Raven Jackson’s poetic, patient debut is a distillation of cinema to its purest form, a stunning patchwork of experience and memory. Tethered around the life of Mack, a Black woman from Mississippi, as we witness glimpses of her childhood, teenage years, and beyond, All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt becomes a sensory experience unlike anything else this year. Shot in beautiful 35mm by Jomo Fray and edited by Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s collaborator Lee Chatametikool, there’s a reverence for nature and joy for human connection that seems all too rarified in today’s landscape of American filmmaking. – Jordan R.

Emma Raducanu's second tennis match of her comeback did not go as planned, but she'll take plenty of positives from a valiant effort.
The British tennis star came within a few points of victory but lost agonizingly 7-6, 6-7, 1-6 in almost three hours against the second-seeded Elina Svitolina. She led the second-set tiebreak early on with a mini-break but struggled with her composure and fitness.
Her performance level at the Asb Classic, where she was playing as a wild card entrant, showcased why she is regarded as one of the world's top tennis stars, but her health has been the determinant factor of how her career has panned out so far.
Having recovered from three surgeries, there is concern within Raducanu's camp that her injury nightmare is not over. In her second-round match against the Ukrainian, the former US Open champion was visibly sporting heavy strapping on her upper leg.

Chinese studio Bona Film Group has struck a deal with U.S. financier Tsg Entertainment Finance to invest in a slate of upcoming Hollywood franchise movies. The deal is understood to include upcoming “Avatar” and “Deadpool” titles.
The agreement, signed on Dec. 31, is described as an extension and expansion of a relationship between Bona and Tsg that began in 2015. The financial terms were not disclosed.
Through the earlier deal Bona committed to providing $235 million to co-invest with Tsg in a slate of films including “The Martian,” “Independence Day: Resurgence,” “The Greatest Showman,” “War for the Planet of the Apes,” “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children,” “Alien: Covenant” and “X-Men: Apocalypse,” most of which were distributed through 20th Century Fox.

Catering directly to my interests, the Criterion Channel’s January lineup boasts two of my favorite things: James Gray and cats. In the former case it’s his first five features (itself a terrible reminder he only released five movies in 20 years); the latter shows felines the respect they deserve, from Kuroneko to The Long Goodbye, Tourneur’s Cat People and Mick Garris’ Sleepwalkers. Meanwhile, Ava Gardner, Bertrand Tavernier, Isabel Sandoval, Ken Russell, Juleen Compton, George Harrison’s HandMade Films, and the Sundance Film Festival get retrospectives.
Restorations of Soviet sci-fi trip Ikarie Xb 1, The Unknown, and The Music of Regret stream, as does the recent Plan 75. January’s Criterion Editions are Inside Llewyn Davis, Farewell Amor, The Incredible Shrinking Man, and (most intriguingly) the long-out-of-print The Man Who Fell to Earth, Blu-rays of which go for hundreds of dollars.

One of the year’s best films, Celine Song’s Korean-American love story, now on streaming and DVD, continues cinema’s rich tradition of immigrant stories, from Chaplin to Persepolis
Awards season often tends to benefit the newer, shinier end-of-year releases that are freshest in voters’ memories, but Celine Song’s lovely, low-key Past Lives appears to be quietly staying the course. Having premiered way back in January, hit cinemas in the summer and since become available to stream – with the DVD out last week for physical media loyalists – it is now routinely popping up on best-of-2023 lists, and scooped best feature at the Gotham awards in the US. Something sticks in the mind and heart about Song’s melancholic, gentle but emotionally acute tale of a rekindled relationship between a Korean-American immigrant and the childhood friend she left behind in Seoul. Anyone whose life has been split across countries...

In 2012, William Collier self-published a dark comedy novel called Stanley’s Comet. It focuses on the discovery by a low-level NASA scientist of a giant comet on a collision course with Earth. Initially, the government is skeptical of whether it will make impact but eventually plans a nuclear strike, which, for political reasons, is aborted. In the meantime, the scientist is catapulted into fame as people are divided on whether to take the threat seriously and the wealthy make alternative plans for survival.

Disney, 20th Century Studios and CAA won’t have to face a copyright lawsuit brought by production executive Madison Jones, who accused them of conspiring together to steal ideas from a screenplay he pitched for Ad Astra.
U.S. District Judge Fred Slaughter found that the makers of the 2019 sci-fi film couldn’t have ripped off Jones’ work since they didn’t have access to his screenplay, which was completed after Ad Astra was already written. And even if they did read the script, the movies aren’t similar enough to prove copyright infringement, according to a summary judge order issued on Tuesday.

French film critic and historian Michel Ciment, the long-time publishing director of film magazine Positif, has died Monday, French media reported. He was 85.
Ciment first started writing for the Lyon-based magazine in 1963, when he contributed a piece about the cinema of Orson Welles.
The magazine was launched in 1952 shortly after Les Cahiers du Cinéma by Bernard Chardère, who also died this year.
In a talk at Paris’s Forum Des Images in 2022, marking Positif’s 70th anniversary, Ciment recounted how he started reading the magazine in the 1950s as a teenager, while hanging around the Le Minotaure bookshop in the Paris quarter of Saint-Germain-des-Près.
“It was an amazing place where you’d bump into other cinephiles like Jean-Claude Romer, who went on to create [the cinema magazine] Midi Minuit Fantastique,” recounted Ciment.
“There were a lot of people from Les Cahiers and Positif… You couldn’t find the cinema revues in kiosks then.

The American Film Institute’s Life Achievement Award gala recognizing Nicole Kidman has been rescheduled for April 27 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.
The tribute gala, which was delayed due to the WGA strike, had originally been scheduled for June 10, 2023.
She is the first Australian actor to receive the AFI honor.
“Nicole Kidman has enchanted audiences for decades with the daring of her artistry and the glamour of a screen icon. She is a force both brave in her choices and bold in each performance,” AFI Board of Trustees chair Kathleen Kennedy said when she was selected.
Kidman has an Oscar for “The Hours” and nominations for “Moulin Rouge,” “Rabbit Hole,” “Lion” and “Being the Ricardos.” She also has two Emmys for “Big Little Lies” and a Golden Globe nod for “The Undoing.”

These last few years the Criterion Channel have made October viewing much easier to prioritize, and in the spirit of their ’70s and ’80s horror series we’ve graduated to––you guessed it––”’90s Horror.” A couple of obvious classics stand with cult favorites and more unknown entities (When a Stranger Calls Back and Def By Temptation are new to me). Three more series continue the trend: “Technothrillers” does what it says on the tin, courtesy the likes of eXistenZ and Demonlover; “Art-House Horror” is precisely the kind of place to host Cure, Suspiria, Onibaba; and “Pre-Code Horror” is a black-and-white dream. Phantom of the Paradise, Unfriended, and John Brahm’s The Lodger are added elsewhere.

It’s the last weekend of a September chock-full of sequels, a few doing better than others. Sure enough, this weekend adds two more, but also a rare original science fiction film. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
The last few weekends have been so bad at the box office it may point toward audiences being ready for new and original movies. That’s certainly the case with 20th Century Studios’ “The Creator,” a new original science fiction movie from “Rogue One” and “Godzilla” director Gareth Edwards. It stars John David Washington from “Tenet” as a soldier in the war between humans and robots, who travels to Asia to find his missing wife Maya (Gemma Chan), only to be roped into a mission where he must find and kill a synthetic child (Madeleine Yuna Voyles), that could win the war for the robots.

Italy’s Indiana Production – which has just become part of pan-European studio Vuelta Group – is staying true to its roots with production kicking off this month on gender swap movie “Romeo is Juliet,” directed by quality comedy specialist Giovanni Veronesi, just as the company expands its horizons.
This latest title in Indiana’s slate stars A-lister Sergio Castellitto and Pilar Fogliati (“Romantiche”) who plays an actress named Vittoria who after being brutally rejected by a cynical stage director when she auditions to play Juliet in Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” decides to reinvent herself as a man to audition for Romeo and gets the part. The film’s lead actors and director are pictured above.

Anthony Hopkins recently played an elderly Jewish man who fled persecution as a child in James Gray’s Armageddon Time. He continues in this vein somewhat with One Life, this time playing British Jew Nicholas Winton, an actual historical figure, who in his youth helped child refugees flee Czechoslovakia during World War II. In some ways, it’s one of Hopkins’ best performances from the last few years, beautifully underplayed, eschewing mannerisms or silly accents. It’s just a shame the film itself, directed by James Hawes, with a script by Lucinda Coxon and Nick Drake, is a bit worthy and diagrammatic. Still, that won’t stop it from traveling far to festivals and probably finding distribution as fare appealing to older viewers, especially in the U.K., where many seniors may remember the moment on TV show That’s Life! in 1988 that made Winton famous.

The two-time Oscar winner makes a convincing play for a third statuette in the powerful story of Nicholas Winton who saved Jewish children before the war began
It seems strange that an actor of Anthony Hopkins’ prestige and acclaim would need a comeback so late in his career but for a few years, the Oscar-winner was stuck in a cycle of thankless sequel paycheques and one-word thrillers where the “and” credit was starting to lose its lustre (Collide! Solace! Misconduct! Blackway!). Within the space of a year he was then Oscar nominated for The Two Popes and won for The Father (his first Academy attention since 1998) and while, it didn’t exactly curb his predilection for B-movies completely, it did edge him back toward substance, with a subtle yet scene-devouring turn in James Gray’s Armageddon Time and now, another knockout performance in second world war drama One Life.

Apple Original Films has announced its final release plans, in partnership with Paramount Pictures, for Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon.” The film will open wide globally on October 20, skipping the previously announced limited release that would have occurred two weeks earlier.
The move shows just how much confidence Apple has in this awards contender after its starry debut at Cannes: IndieWire’s own David Ehrlich called it Leonardo DiCaprio’s best performance. And after years of doing fine work in films like “Certain Women” and “The Unknown Country,” Lily Gladstone is also tipped to have a major breakout moment with the film, which also stars Robert De Niro, Jesse Plemons, Cara Jade Myers, JaNae Collins, Jillian Dion, and Tantoo Cardinal. The film is adapted from New Yorker writer David Grann’s bestseller of the same name, following James Gray’s acclaimed adaptation of his previous book “The Lost City of Z....

Draws are a very interesting thing to many tennis fans around the world, but we've seen them lately conducted in questionable ways.
From bad live streams to no live streams at all, we've seen pretty much anything under the rainbow by now. The US Open is coming up, and tennis fans are excited to see how the draws will shape up. Many like to analyze it and see how far their favourites could go, and it's generally interesting to see what the paths look like.
Who will Carlos Alcaraz play, who might Novak Djokovic beat en route to a final, and what could happen on the Wta side of the event? The draw can answer all that in some capacity; however, tennis fans must wait to see it in full.
There won't be any live streaming as it will be held behind closed doors, a slap for many fans. They...

South Korea isn't exactly a country that springs to mind when one thinks of the Space Race. The enormously expensive endeavour to shoot for the stars has always been the stage for huge global superpowers like the US and Russia to duke out their differences, and in turn, big-budget cinema has wasted no time in making a spectacle out of getting there. A recent Hollywood boom in the genre has seen prestige filmmakers like Alfonso Cuarón, Christopher Nolan and Ridley Scott turn in “Gravity”, “Interstellar” and “The Martian” respectively, and James Gray's divisive “Ad Astra” take the space-survival drama to its most eccentric end point. Yet it remains a predominantly American genre, and while South Korea's 2021 Netflix hit “Space Sweepers” arrived with a modest bang on the international front, East Asian cinema has yet to turn in a seminal space thriller. Enter Kim Yong-hwa's “The Moon” as South Korea's expensive,...

Joseph Fiennes quickly fell out of love with Miramax following 1998 Best Picture winner “Shakespeare in Love.”
Fiennes, who allegedly beat out Daniel Day-Lewis to play the titular British playwright, recalled to The Guardian that producer Harvey Weinstein used a shocking “bullying tactic” after the film’s release and subsequent Oscar wins. Fiennes was offered a five-picture deal with Miramax, which he turned down.
“I have to be careful here,” Fiennes said, before explaining that Weinstein invited him to his hotel room to aggressively detail the proposed contract. According to Fiennes, Weinstein said “shocking” things and confirmed that he would be entirely in charge of Fiennes’ career going forward. If Fiennes refused, he would not work in Hollywood again.

Ajla Tomljanovic 's father Ratko Tomljanovic has caused some stir among tennis fans after the latest episode of Netflix's Break Point.
The 30-year-old Australian had a great 2023 season, reaching two Grand Slam quarterfinals. One of those was at Wimbledon , where she defended her participation in those stages from the previous year.
But despite having a great run, there were multiple things that prevented her from enjoying it fully. One of those was the fact that there were no points awarded to the players, causing Tomljanovic to be disappointed about her rankings and not being ranked as high as she should have been on the Wta Tour.
Another really unpleasant experience for the Australian was when she was asked about Nick Kyrgios' assault case after equalling her best-ever Grand Slam result. She was disappointed by that and prompted the journalist to do better .

Armageddon Time (James Gray)
Armageddon Time is the sort of film usually invoked as a “portrait of the nation” or “state of the union address,” something taking the temperature of a country—most likely the United States—at a particular time in history. But it’s also a work that makes self-consciousness a virtue: its wonderful writer-director, James Gray, is informed up to his eyes about the virtues and pitfalls of films like these, and here makes something so idiosyncratically his own but that audiences and critics might still mislabel with one of those aforementioned ideas. – David K. Beau Is Afraid (Joaquin Phoenix)
Ari Aster’s brazenly original three-hour odyssey Beau Is Afraid is, refreshingly, the kind of film where it seems no notes were given––or at least the director had the creative control to reject them. Jumping from some of the most brilliant dark comedy in cinema as of late to a boldly conceived existential journey to an emotionally rife reckoning with mother issues, this Charlie Kaufman-esque journey of the mind packs in quite a lot. Even at its most unwieldy, Aster’s film is continued proof that Joaquin Phoenix––brilliant here, at the center of every scene––is the rare breed of actor seeking new challenges with each performance. – Jordan R.

There are very few movie characters who ignite our imagination with as much gusto as Dr. Henry “Indiana” Jones, the whip-cracking, tomb- raiding archeologist with a penchant for getting into trouble, kicking Nazi ass, and getting the girl – well sometimes. But people have often wondered if he was based on, or at least inspired by, a real person. Could such an extraordinary man ever truly existed? We’re going to unearth the truth on this burning question and find out in this episode of What Really Happened to this Movie?!
It’s no secret that the Indiana Jones films have their roots in the distant past. The first film, Raiders of the Lost Ark, was the brainchild of George Lucas and Steven Spielberg; both were inspired by the swashbuckling serial films of the 30s and 40s, as well as high-concept 50s adventures like Journey to the Centre of the Earth and Secret of the Incas.

At 80, Martin Scorsese has finally made a Western, and it packs a wallop. The much anticipated Killers of the Flower Moon had its world premiere on Saturday night at the Cannes Film Festival, an epic set in the Osage Nation of Oklahoma largely in the early 1920s and telling a harrowing and highly complex tale that still resonates today, but seems incredible that it ever could have happened.
Scorsese and his Oscar winning co-writer of the screenplay Eric Roth have adapted David Grann’s 2017 book Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI, but though meticulously researched and told by Grann, their take on the book veers strongly from the FBI part and instead smartly goes for the jugular and soul of a moment in time where greed and money drove white men to unspeakable acts. With a complicated love story at its center,...

Every 10 years or so, Hollywood seems to fall head over heels in love with a writer. In the 1990s, studios couldn't stop turning John Grisham's legal drama/thriller novels into movies. Such was also the case with romance novelist Nicholas Sparks, starting with "Message in a Bottle" in 1999 and stretching on throughout the 2000s and a little beyond.
More recently, journalist and writer David Grann has quietly emerged as the hot new thing in Tinseltown. His book "Killers of the Flower Moon" is now a $200 million, three-hour epic directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Leonardo DiCaprio, and the screen rights to his newest work, "The Wager: A Tale of Shipwreck, Mutiny, and Murder," were acquired by Scorsese and DiCaprio before it was even published. Recent years have also seen Grann's book "The Lost City of Z: A Tale of Deadly Obsession in the Amazon" and his New Yorker article...

Occasionally, actors take on a role that gets its hooks in them and doesn't completely untether once shooting is over. It's happened to some of the best performers on the planet, and it apparently happened to Tom Holland while playing Danny Sullivan in the upcoming Apple TV+ crime miniseries "The Crowded Room."
If that title sounds familiar, it's because the project has been kicking around since the early 1990s. Based on Daniel Keyes' nonfiction book "The Minds of Billy Milligan," which details the criminal exploits of a serial rapist afflicted with dissociative identity disorder, the project was nearly James Cameron's follow-up to "Terminator 2: Judgment Day." John Cusack was originally cast in the lead, and Cameron was preparing to shoot before a series of lawsuits (some filed by Milligan himself) derailed the production.
Akiva Goldsman revived the project as a miniseries in 2021 but departed from Milligan's dark story to...

Exclusive: In 2016, the hottest book in Hollywood hadn’t even been published yet. Circulating in galley proofs, it was the latest non-fiction work from author David Grann, whose 2009 book The Lost City of Z: A Tale of Deadly Obsession in the Amazon had recently been filmed by James Gray and produced by Plan B. His new book was another mouthful — Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI — and it proved just as tasty.
Seven-figure bids materialized, with talent attachments that included Leonardo DiCaprio, George Clooney, Brad Pitt and J.J. Abrams. The deal ended with a statement buy by Imperative Entertainment’s Dan Friedkin and Bradley Thomas, who went well beyond the bids and took it off the table for $5 million. With Martin Scorsese directing, they would set it up at Paramount, casting DiCaprio alongside Robert De Niro in the most iconic pairing since...
