As expected, the Cannes Film Festival line-up is pretty spectacular with new films from Yorgos Lanthimos, Andrea Arnold and David Cronenberg heading to the fest.
As the days are getting longer and there’s a tiny bit more sunshine in between the showers of rain, that can only mean one thing. The Cannes Film Festival is almost upon us.
Of course, us peasants rarely get to go, but it is fun to read the reactions from the glitzy world premieres as the stars gather in the picturesque town of Cannes.
And this year’s festival line-up is a doozy. We already knew George Miller was heading to the Croisette with Furiosa, Francis Ford Coppola is bringing Megalopolis and Kevin Costner will be premiering his new film, too, but there’s a whole heap of great filmmakers heading out to the beach with their films.
The highlights include Yorgos Lanthimos’ Kinds Of Kindness,...

L’amour est un crime parfait (Love is the Perfect Crime)
Written and directed by Arnaud Larrieu and Jean-Marie Larrieu
France/Switzerland, 2013
Set in the icy backdrop of the Swiss Alps, L’amour est un crime parfait (Love is the Perfect Crime) is a dark thriller that blurs the lines between fantasy and reality. With a rich emphasis on the link between man, literature, and landscape, the film takes its audience for a chilling ride.
Marc, played brilliantly by Mathieu Amalric, is a middle-aged literature professor who has an appetite for young female students. When Barbara, one of his brightest, goes mysteriously missing, her attractive stepmother Anna (Maiwenn) starts to hang around the university looking for any clues that might shed light on the girl’s sudden disappearance. Marc quickly becomes captivated with this woman and begins a torrid affair with her, unaware that she may have an ulterior motive.

The titles just keep coming as we are now just over three weeks away from the start of the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival and they have gone and added 90 new feature length titles to the program and it's not as if they are titles you haven't heard of. New to the Galas selection is Guillaume Canet's Blood Ties which premiered at Cannes earlier this year (read my review here) and Words and Pictures starring Clive Owen and Juliette Binoche. In the Special Presentations selection you find the bulk of the more noted titles including Alex Gibney's new documentary The Armstrong Lie about cyclist Lance Armstrong, Johnnie To's Blind Detective which also premiered at Cannes, James Franco's Child of God based on the Cormac McCarthy novel, John Turturro's Fading Gigolo which features Woody Allen in one of the roles, Kevin Macdonald's How I Live Now...

Buzz: A preem at Locarno hasn't brought about glowing reviews for this dystopian flick with the two plus hour run time. I'm not sure if this is an overly ambitious project or just a difficult sell, but I'll rally behind this one because I need something less grim to work with my appreciation of Children of Men. The Gist: A global apocalypse is about to destroy all mankind. In a final quest, Robinson (Mathieu Amalric) sets out on a journey from France to Spain, searching for Laetitia, the woman he once loved, even if it means heading back to the centre of the danger zone. The Locarno Film festival is getting weirder every day. If you think the Piazza Grande is reserved for divine art house cinema, check this out! Before the screening of “Les Derniers Jours Du Monde”, two trailers for the new Pokémon movie were screened on the Piazza Grande and Shoko Nakagawa, the incarnation of a hentai girl, performed the title song. As if that hadn’t been enough, she was accompanied by Pikachu, himself – who also gave an interview: “Pika, Pika, Pika!!!”… The audience was not amused.
Shortly after the beginning of the Larrieu Brothers’ latest achievement it started to rain and thunder on the Piazza, so I saw most of the film from my refuge under the arcades and I stayed until the end.

I've actually been clocking this film for some time but have only been able to find behind the scenes pics which really didn't show much of anything, but apparently it's been a big budget (and destruction) production that's been shot all over the place. Directed by brothers Arnaud Larrieu and Jean-Marie Larrieu and set in 2016, the film is adapted from Dominique Noguez’s eponymous novel, which opens with a television announcement by the French President: "There is no longer any hope of survival!" The book’s narrator – a screenwriter recovering from a break-up – sets out on a true odyssey. He travels through deserted cities that have been struck by earthquakes and epidemics, and are plagued by gangs of killers. But he also crosses paths with old friends, women who soothe his anguish during the last days of the world and a strange billionaire who throws a final orgy. No, this...

- Cannes launched their new website (visit here) and a spanking brand new poster hours before the anticipated announcement of the films that will make up the 2009 edition. This year's one sheet (a banner that will litter the entire Croisette) is an homage to last year's dearly departed Michelangelo Antonioni and his masterwork l’Avventura. Created by Annick Durban, Cannes says this is “a mysterious female silhouette, caught in mid-movement, seems to be opening a window onto the magic of cinema and invites us into a dream…” See the poster after my predictions-jump. Cannes Predictions Variety, THR, Screen Daily and IndieWire have had an easier time in coming up with their predictions for the Cannes slate in a year where there is an influx of titles from returning main stays. Cannes Film Festival Directors Fortnight
"Le Voyage aux Pyrenees" may be one of the darkest comedies every made. That's not in terms of theme or style, but rather in terms of illumination. With more dark shadows and gray backdrops than most horror films render in three outings, it's particularly confounding since this is generically a romantic comedy. Distribution prospects are grim outside of native France for this Directors' Fortnight entrant.
The balmy story of a husband/wife movie star team who go to the farthest reaches of the Pyrennes to escape the paparazzi and rekindle their sex life, this romp is further impaled by a dirge-like score and other aesthetics more appropriate to a vampire movie.
In short, it seems that filmmakers Arnaud Larrieu and Jean-Marie Larrieu may have confused the Pyrennes with Transylvania, so forbidding and harrowing is much of this lumpen lark. There is some intermittently raw and funny sexual comedy, mainly fluctuating around the premise that the wife is suffering a "bout of nymphomania" while the husband has been impotent for years. When that hilarity shrivels, there's further attempts at comedy: a bear that dances around and acts like a human, as well as a trio of monks who harmonize in the soupy style of '60s novelty singer Sister Sourire.

- Highlighted by the presence of Jim Jarmusch (who will be receiving a special award called the Carrosse d’Or), the 40th year of the Director's Fortnight doesn't look as strong on paper as the previous edition, but the quality of this year's fair will be better determined in ten days or so. Containing a good amount of French productions, the section offers many first time efforts from filmmakers who get to tell their children that they took part in an event that showcases auteur cinema from the greats. Here are five to look out for. Boogie (Radu Muntean) It seems that every year a Romanian film shows up at Cannes andt steals the thunder away from other eastern European producing countries. - Offering no shortage of world premieres from auteur filmmakers, the 40th edition of the Directors’ Fortnight contains exactly half of the films being produced or co-produced from the fest’s home turf, this year it will be a mostly French affair. Among the more popular names we find the festival opener slot (announced yesterday) belonging to the long-awaited return of Jerzy Skolimowski and his latest and we also find the likes of former folk who’ve contributed to the section in the past: Joachim Lafosse (Private Property) and Bertrand Bonello (Tiresia) and Claire Simon (Ça brûle). A common meeting place for auteur cinema, a special film was designed to recall the history of the section with testimonies from a who's who of favorite directors in Todd Haynes, Jacques Rozier, Costa Gavras, Michael Raeburn, Ken Loach, Alain Tanner, Carlos Diegues, Werner Herzog, Theo Angelopoulos, André Téchiné, Chantal Akerman, the Taviani brothers,

PARIS -- The Directors' Fortnight will have a decidedly Gallic flavor as it celebrates its 40th anniversary in Cannes this year, with more than half its 22 titles produced or co-produced by France and just one title hailing from the U.S.
The sidebar will open with Jerzy Skolimowski's Franco-Polish co-production "Four Nights With Anna".
Bertrand Bonello's "De la Guerre" (On War) will bring Mathieu Amalric and Asia Argento back to the Croisette after a high-profile presence at last year's fest.
Claire Simon's "Les Bureaux de Dieu" explores women's sexual freedom at a family planning center and stars festival veteran Nathalie Baye alongside Nicole Garcia, Beatrice Dalle and Isabelle Carre.
Other all-French productions include Cannes newcomer Nicola Sornaga's "Monsieur Morimoto" and Croisette vets Jean-Marie and Arnaud Larrieu's "Le Voyage aux Pyrenees".
French-language films include Algerian director Rabah Ameur-Zaimeche's "Le Dernier Maquis" and a pair of France-Belgium co-productions from Belgian helmers: Bouli Lanners with "Eldorado" and Joachim Lafosse with "Eleve Libre".
French minority co-productions include Filipino director Raya Martin's "Now Showing" and Iranian Saman Salour's "Lonely Tune of Tehran".
"This simply demonstrates the strong presence of French producers all over the world. Does the fact that a film has a French producer take away its nationality? I don't think so," artistic director Olivier Pere said in an interview.
The U.S. is conspicuous by its absence in this year's Fortnight, with only Josh Safdie's whimsical first feature, closing night film "The Pleasure of Being Robbed", programmed in the main selection.
Among the special screenings and events scheduled to celebrate the parallel sidebar's 40th anniversary is the May 18 unspooling of director Olivier Jahan's "40x15", a history of the sidebar produced by Gaul's MK2.
