Casting director Russell Boast, producer Annabelle K. Frost, producer Nana Greenwald, writer-director Tamar Halpern, animator David Kuhn, producer-director Sheldon Larry and broadcast journalist May Lee have been hired as full-time faculty at Chapman University’s Dodge College of Film and Media Arts.
The new faculty members have worked on some of the most prominent film and television projects of the past 30 years, including the Harrison Ford starrer The Fugitive, David Fincher’s Seven and Disney’s Pocahontas. They will assume their new roles on Monday, Aug. 28, at the start of the 2023-24 academic year.
“This is an awe-inspiring group of teachers, whose range of experience adds a wealth of valuable knowledge to our already-impressive faculty,” said Stephen Galloway, dean of Dodge College. “I can only wish I’d had professors like this when I was in film school.”

Ted (15)
(Seth MacFarlane, 2012, Us) Mark Wahlberg, Mila Kunis, Seth MacFarlane, Joe McHale, Giovanni Ribisi. 106 mins
Those unconvinced by MacFarlane's Family Guy cartoon series will be even less convinced by his first feature – basically a routine manchild/bromance story with one novel idea: Wahlberg has a magic talking teddy, which has grown up into an obnoxious party animal – thus creating relationship issues with shrewish girlfriend Kunis. It's all gags and no comedy. And if you're anything other than white, male and pop culture-literate, you'll find the humour at best patchy, at worst, downright nasty.
Sound Of My Voice (15)
(Zal Batmanglij, 2011, Us) Christopher Denham, Nicole Vicius, Brit Marling. 85 mins
As with Another Earth, co-writer Marling takes an unorthodox line through a familiar genre here. This time she's a spacey/scary cult leader who claims to be from the year 2054. A couple of investigative journalists get out of their depth taking her on.

★★★☆☆ Some have compared Sheldon Larry's original musical Leave It on the Floor (2011) to Alice tumbling down the rabbit hole, as audiences delve into the wild subculture of La's Ball Culture. Yet somehow, it feels all the more appropriate to quote Dorothy: "Toto, I don’t think we're in Kansas anymore." Having been thrown out of the house by his homophobic single mother, Brad (Ephraim Sykes) winds up on the streets before falling in with the self-styled 'House of Eminence'.

Peccadillo Pictures is holding a premiere on August 1 to launch an exclusive two-week theatrical run (August 1 to 16) at the Leicester Square Theatre. Leave It On The Floor then heads to DVD on September 10. The trailer is included below.

Leave It On The Floor stars Ephraim Sykes as Bradley Darnell Lyle, Phillip Evelyn as Princess Eminence, Andre Myers as Carter and Miss Barbie-q as Queef Latina.

As we roll into Berlin where War Witch (aka Rebelle) (Isa: Films Distribution) by Kim Nguyen is in Competition. While it’s Kim’s 4th feature, this is the first of his films to have a world premiere at an international festival. This is exceptional as well because the last time the Canadians had a Canadian director in Competition at the Berlinale was in 1999 with Emporte-Moi ! Guy Madden’s Keyhole holds a Berlinale Special slot. Guy is Canada’s cultural ambassador in Berlin and a regular at the Festival and sat on the Berlinale’s Official Jury last year – with Isabella Rossellini.
Sheldon Larry’s Leave It on the Floor (Isa: Arrow) is a U.S.-Canadian Co-pro which has played Laff, Tiff and is now in the Panorama.
Films in the Forum include Green Laser by another Berlinale favorite, John Greyson. Green Laser is his 8th film at the festival. His first was Urinal in 1989. Denis Côté’s Bestiary, straight from Sundance, and Francine, the first narrative feature by Melanie Shatzky (Canada) and Brian M. Cassidy (U.S.) the team that directed Patron Saints (Tiff 2011, Rotterdam 2012) are are all in the Forum.
4 films are in the Forum Expanded:
Chris Kennedy’s 349 (For Sol LeWitt)(1min long!) in Tiff 2011 Wavelength Program: Schedule
American Colour, Tiff 2011 Wavelength Program: Schedule
Road Movie by Elle Flanders and Tamira Sawatzkystarring Melissa Leo (Frozen River) Tiff 2011 Future Projections: Schedule, a 6-channel installation produced by The National Film Board of Canada. Elle Flanders’ documentary Zero Degrees of Separation was screened in the Forum section of the Berlin Festival in 2005.
The Tiny Ventriloquist by Steve Reinke, (with contribution from James Richards). The installation will be presented at the McLuhan Salon of the Canadian Embassy
In Berlinale Shorts Competition, The Man That Got Away by Trevor Anderson is his second film in this section (2009 The Island). His doc short The High Leve Bridge was in Sundance in 2010.
All we have to do now is wait to see which prizes go to them! Last year Canadian productions came away with three.

Following up the initial announcement of titles, the 62nd Berlin International Film Festival revealed it will open with the period drama Les Adieux à la reine (Farewell My Queen) today. From director Benoît Jacquot, the drama stars Inglourious Basterds lead Diane Kruger, as well as Léa Seydoux who broke-out in Midnight in Paris and Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol this year. Based on, Chantal Thomas’ novel we have the first stills of the film (from Lumiere via The Playlist) that follows the “first few days of the French Revolution from the perspective of the servants at Versailles.”
Kruger, who plays Marie Antoinette here, has only appeared in one big film following her post-Basterds role with Unknown, but I look forward to her future work, especially with this film. I thought Seydoux was great as an action villain in Ghotocol and excited to see her career rise. Check out the stills below,...

News is rolling out of Toronto for this year's festival, with the Galas and the Special Presentations sections announced. As always with Tiff, the sheer number of films can seem overwhelming, but with new films by David Cronenberg (A Dangerous Method, pictured above), Terence Davies (!), Francis Ford Coppola, Wang Xiaoshuai, Marjane Satrapi & Vincent Paronnaud, and William Friedkin added to big names that premiered already this year (including Almodóvar, Von Trier, Nanni Moretti, and Nicolas Winding Refn) it looks like the 2011 iteration will be as packed with must-see cinema as ever before. We'll be updating this listing as new lineups are announced. See Tiff's official website for details.

This year's Los Angeles Film Festival, running through June 26, opens tonight with the latest from Richard Linklater, and Steven Zeitchik talks with him for the Los Angeles Times: "'It was my most difficult one to get made,' he said flatly. 'It took 12 years to happen, and even then it was tough. People can say shooting in 22 days makes a movie better. It doesn't.' … Bernie is a shaggy, idiosyncratic work, possibly the strangest yet in a career full of strangeness. Set in the small town of Carthage, Texas, it tells of an effeminate, musical-loving mortician named Bernie Tiede [Jack Black] who befriends and then commits a horrible crime against a repressed wealthy matriarch [Shirley MacLaine], leaving him to face the wrath of a local prosecutor [Matthew McConaughey]. The movie is a dramatization of an actual case — the script was based on a 1998 Texas Monthly article about Tiede, and Linklater, who attended Tiede's trial,...

20 years after "Paris is Burning," director Sheldon Larry (pictured middle right) brought the house down with his fierce Ballroom dance musical, "Leave it on the Floor" Friday night at the Frameline Sf Lgbt Film Festival. The musical centers on Brad who is kicked out of his home and falls in with the struggling House of Eminence, a group of voguing would-be superstars who frequent downtown L.A. ballroom competitions. La Film Fest Review | "Leave It On the Floor" Revisits Ballroom Scene With Flaws, But Plenty of Life
Revisiting the African American ball culture first made famous by Jennie Livingston's 1990 New York-set documentary "Paris is Burning" and the Madonna single "Vogue," Sheldon Larry's colorful movie musical "Leave It On the Floor" takes place in a similar Los Angeles scene. Made on the cheap and extremely rough around the edges, Larry's derivative tale of a young black man booted from his home for being gay and discovering a ...

Twenty years after “Paris Is Burning” revealed New York’s “ball” culture, Sheldon Larry’s “Leave It on the Floor” explores Los Angeles’ contemporary ball scene with a musical scored by Beyoncé’s music director and choreographed by her dance master. Director Sheldon Larry writes for Moving Pictures about the impetus for the project, the challenges of getting inside the tight-knit community and the dangers his cast face during production.

The idea to create “Leave It on the Floor,” our original narrative musical feature, came to me profoundly almost 20 years ago, when I first saw Jennie Livingston’s documentary “Paris Is Burning” in 1990. I was living in New York City and directing film and theater off-Broadway. That film took a memorable first look at the New York “ball” community of the late 1980s,...

The Los Angeles Film Festival’s risky move last year from the comfy confines of Westwood to burgeoning downtown L.A. paid off, with record-high attendance (92,000) for a slate of films that included gala screenings of Sundance faves “The Kids Are All Right” and “Waiting for ‘Superman’” and the world premieres of “Despicable Me” and “The Last Exorcism.”
The fest also received a whirlwind of international coverage with its “festival-adjacent” world premiere of “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse,” which prompted a much-documented week-long campout of Twi-hards.
The festival’s director, independent film producer Rebecca Yeldham (“The Motorcycle Diaries,” “Anvil! The Story of Anvil!” and “The Kite Runner”), happily took time to discuss the festival’s successes, challenges and philosophy, with an eye to the future.

Holding court downtown from June 16-26, 2011, the Los Angeles Film Festival comprehensively curates the cinematic landscape across a variety of media. Produced by Film Independent, the festival has continued to grow in recent years, and now boasts many of the best independent films of the year.
With the departure of the organization’s CEO, Dawn Hudson, to run the Academy, it will be interesting to see whether the festival’s director Rebecca Yeldham will stay on board past 2011. In the meantime, they’ve announced their line-up for the 2011 festival, and it includes some much buzzed about Sundance and SxSW titles (“Project Nim,” “The Future,” “Crime After Crime,” “The Salesman,” “Terri,” “Another Earth,” “The Guard,” “Natural Selection,” “Tyrannosaur,” “Where Soldiers Come From” and “Higher Ground,” to name a few), as well as 27 world, North American and U.S. premieres.
