There is an intricate balance when it comes to animated performances, with animators and voice actors working together to create memorable characters. Remove one of the two elements, and you get a completely different character. Look at Mark Hamill as Joker in "Batman: The Animated Series," Dante Basco as Zuko in "Avatar: The Last Airbender," or Robin Williams as Genie in "Aladdin": These characters work because of the team of animators infusing the characters with life, and because of the unique personality the actors bring to the roles (even if Williams' casting ended up causing a whole lot of problems).

Disney Emea Animation Studio this morning unveiled a group of new and returning animated kids projects out of Europe and Africa. Among the new titles is Kizazi Moto: Generation Fire, a 10-part sci-fi anthology executive produced by Oscar-winning Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse co-director Peter Ramsey.
The short films, to be made by talent hailing from such places as Uganda, Zimbabwe, Kenya, South Africa, Egypt and Nigeria, will seek to answer the question “What does Africa’s future look like from an African perspective?” and tap into the Afrofuturism that was turbocharged by Marvel’s Black Panther, said Orion Ross, VP Animation for Disney Europe, Middle East & Africa. Triggerfish is the lead production house for a late 2022 global launch on Disney Plus.
Disney Junior and Disney Plus have also picked up Kiya And The Kimoja Heroes, a pre-school series created by South African duo Kelly Dillon and Marc Dey and produced by eOne and Frog Box.

Michael Shannon raps in a Russian accent in the fourth episode of “Room 104” Season 2. There. Now you know it’s coming, and believe me, the Oscar nominee and Chicago bar legend’s skilled rhyming — accompanied by gyrating dancers and a brass marching band — well, it’s worth getting excited about.
These are the miniature delights of Jay and Mark Duplass’ episodic anthology series, which abides by only one rule: Each story takes place in the same dingy motel room. With every half-hour sporting a new cast, story, and creative team, the genre-bending HBO experiment can be any kind of show on any given night. Of course, that also means each installment can be very good or very bad — more so than serialized programs, where odds are if you liked something last week, you’ll like something this week.

Looking back on this still-young century makes clear that 2007 was a major time for cinematic happenings — and, on the basis of this retrospective, one we’re not quite through with ten years on. One’s mind might quickly flash to a few big titles that will be represented, but it is the plurality of both festival and theatrical premieres that truly surprises: late works from old masters, debuts from filmmakers who’ve since become some of our most-respected artists, and mid-career turning points that didn’t necessarily announce themselves as such at the time. Join us as an assembled team, many of whom were coming of age that year, takes on their favorites.
Declaring 2007 to be the year mumblecore came of age would be equally as fair as labeling it the year mumblecore collapsed. The signs of ascendance and coalescence—group coverage in high-profile publications, series programmed at art houses,...

“Adventure Time” has a long way to go, but in many ways, it already ended. In early February 2017, just a few months after Cartoon Network notified the team behind its most surprising breakout hit that the show was canceled, the cast finished their last round of voice work. The final episodes were written, and the saga of Finn and Jake in the magical, post-apocalyptic Land of Ooo came to a close as the cast and crew scattered to new projects. The fruits of their labor will gradually unfurl on Cartoon Network until 2018 — although the timing remains uncertain. Fans must wait for the slow march to the finale, but the creative team is moving on.
“It was bittersweet,” said head writer Kent Osborne, recalling the last day of recording. “A lot of shows don’t last this long, but this felt different because it was just so popular.”

Every December it bears repeating: Anyone who thinks this was a bad year for movies simply hasn’t seen enough. In an age of binge-viewing, a preponderance of must-see premium cable shows and, hell, even smartphone apps that command far more attention most feature-length achievements, the true range of quality cinema is often obscured by the noise of an ever-cluttered media landscape. To really assess the state of modern movies, one look beyond the obvious. Sure, it was a weak year for movies that stand out mainly due to star power and sizable marketing budgets, but those options represent only a small fraction of the marketplace.
The film festival circuit provides an ideal alternative to conventional channels for discovering movies worth talking about all year long — and, if they’re lucky enough to land distribution, they quality for year-end celebration on lists like this one. This year, every single finalist...

Back in 2011, director Joe Swanberg made perhaps his most minimalist mumblecore film to date with Uncle Kent, a collaboration with SpongeBob and Adventure Time writer-artist Kent Osborne, in which Osborne plays a pathetic, lovelorn version of himself. The movie didn’t have much of a plot or structure, and its characters weren’t especially engaging or erudite. A short running time and an amiable tone kept Uncle Kent from ever becoming a chore, but aside from one hilariously awkward ménage à trois scene and a poignant final shot, the film was so slight that it almost dared the audience to get anything out of watching.
There’s a sharper point to Uncle Kent 2, although the sequel’s also something of an endurance test, in ways the original never was. Once again, Osborne plays “Kent Osborne,” but a slightly more realistic version this time out: respected in his field ...

In 2011, Joe Swanberg directed the film “Uncle Kent,” about 40-year-old stoner cartoonist Kent (Kent Osborne) who spends a weekend trying to sleep with visiting house guest Kate (Jennifer Prediger), a woman whom he met on Chatroulette. Despite few people actually seeing the film, Swanberg, Osborne and director Todd Rohal have created a sequel “Uncle Kent 2,” a meta-comedy about Kent trying to create a follow-up to the 2011 film by traveling to a comic-book convention and confronting the end of the world. Out of SXSW, Indiewire’s own Eric Kohn described it as “the craziest movie sequel ever” and said that it “provides the ultimate rebuke to formulaic storytelling.” Check out some exclusive posters for fictional sequels in the “Uncle Kent” universe.

Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.
This Past Weekend:
In one of the busier weekends of the month, two of the movies did better than I predicted and two did worse. The real winner of the weekend was Tyler Perry’s Boo! A Madea Halloween, which did far better than anyone thought with an opening weekend of $28.5 million in just 2,260 theaters or $12,611 per theater. It ended up completely demolishing Tom Cruise’s action sequel Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, which opened in almost 1,500 more theaters, but at least that ended up around where I predicted with $22.9 million. Ouija: Origin of Evil came out slightly below my prediction to take third place with $14 million, while the Fox comedy Keeping Up with the Joneses bombed even worse than I expected with $5.5 million in 3,000 theaters.

There has never been a show quite like “Adventure Time,” which can be silly, wise and utterly mesmerizing within the confines of a few unpredictable minutes. The news that it will end its run in 2018, after eight years and nine seasons, may come as a shock to anyone invested in its unique pleasures. “Adventure Time” wasn’t just a well-honed animated program with equal appeal to viewers of all ages; that zany attitude delivered warm tidbits of life advice and an emotional purity with the concision of great folk music, and the same lasting power. It was the kind of perfectly conceived formula that suggested immortality. Even with the end in sight, its legacy is secure.

Is “Uncle Kent 2” the craziest movie sequel ever? That’s what our own Eric Kohn wrote of the film when it debuted at SXSW back in 2015, and going off even the most basic of synopses, it sure sounds like the Todd Rohal feature might rank right up there with the big guys.
Wait, a Todd Rohal feature? But didn’t Joe Swanberg direct “Uncle Kent”? What sort of madness is this? It’s “Uncle Kent” madness. Swanberg does direct the first 12 minutes of the film, before passing it over to “Catechism Cataclysm” director Rohal, who takes things very much in his own direction. See? Wild.

Read More: 'Uncle Kent 2' is the Craziest Movie Sequel Ever "Uncle Kent," Joe Swanberg's lighthearted 2011 portrait of Los Angeles-based animator Kent Osborne, wasn't exactly screaming for a sequel. But "Uncle Kent 2," which screens in New York at BAMCinemaFest on Saturday following its premiere at SXSW in May, isn't your average sequel. The bizarre project is directed by Todd Rohal, whose loopy "The Catechism Cataclysm" and "The Guatemalan Handshake" display a penchant for surreal, sometimes disorienting humor and baffling sight gags. "Uncle Kent 2," which Osborne wrote, follows suit, while also mocking the idea of sequels and playing with its lead character's creative block. The movie opens — in a segment directed by Swanberg — with Osborn himself pitching the premise for the sequel. The ensuing odyssey finds Osborn coping with a hilariously annoying song stuck in his head, an unsettling journey to Comic Con and possibly the end.

We live in an era of sequels and franchises, but even we have to admit that we never expectedJoe Swanberg's little 2011 indie flick, "Uncle Kent," would ever get a followup. While it has, don't expect anything straightforward from director Todd Rohal ("The Catechism Cataclysm," "The Guatamelan Handshake"), who takes the reins from Swanberg and leads the narrative into wild, unexpected places. Kent Osborne returns from the first film, playing himself, as he pitches Swanberg on an idea for a sequel for "Uncle Kent." The director turns it down and Osborne soon tumbles into a surreal journey of his own mad mind. In this exclusive clip, a doctor, played by Steve Little, tries to help with his own curious, hilarious examination. And if you like this scene, check out Eric Kohn's review at Indiewire, where he calls it "a defiantly unconventional crowdpleaser." Check the schedule — "Uncle Kent 2" has two more screenings at.

At first, "Uncle Kent 2" presents itself as a prolonged inside joke on the microbudget American film scene — the kind of referential conceit with the capacity to please the same limited crowd familiar with the movies in question. But that barely gets to the essence of this deliriously strange and hilarious stoner comedy, which delivers one innovative dose of absurdity after another with a liberating energy that never slows down. In its relentless silliness, "Uncle Kent 2" provides the ultimate rebuke to formulaic storytelling, but it's less heady than pure head trip. The title refers back to Joe Swanberg's 2011 portrait of animator and perennial indie actor Kent Osborne (whose other credits include Swanberg's "Hannah Takes the Stairs"), a genial look at the fortysomething bachelor, pot-smoker and animator as he lazily surfs the internet for companionship. "Uncle Kent 2" begins with Osborne, lonely and perpetually stoned as ever, pitching...

Amy Schumer and Bill Hader in TrainwreckPhoto: Universal Pictures With Sundance just wrapping up and Berlin starting up in a few days, we are now immersed in the year-long barrage of film festivals. One such festival in South By Southwest. A few weeks back they announced the first seven films of their program, including the opening night film Brand: A Second Coming. Today, they have revealed the rest of the features to be shown in March (except for the midnight program), and some of it has me very excited. The bigger titles announced do not do much for me. Paul Feig's Spy, starring Melissa McCarthy, and the Will Ferrell/Kevin Hart starrer Get Hard leave a lot to be desired in terms of anticipation, as does a work in progress cut of Judd Apatow's latest film Trainwreck. I'm guessing an Apatow work in progress is probably around three and a half hours.

Nearly 17 months after it first debuted on the Cartoon Hangover channel, Bee and PuppyCat is back. Natasha Allegri's imaginative animated series, which follows a plucky heroine and her mysterious pet across space and time, has begun a ten-episode run on Cartoon Hangover. Bee and PuppyCat began as a two-part short, in which a girl named Bee finds an adorable creature named PuppyCat. A few trans-dimensional portals later, Bee and PuppyCat begin taking intergalactic temp jobs in order to pay the bills. The short was well-received, particularly by women and fans of Adventure Time, on which Allegri works as a character designer. Bee and PuppyCat's success led to a Kickstarter campaign launched by Frederator Studios. That campaign proved to be wildly successful, raising $872,133 and setting into motion a ten-episode series chronicling the adventures of Bee and PuppyCat. The first two episodes of that series are now available, and they're a...

Joe Swanberg had quite a year. In the same summer, he appeared in the horror hit “You’re Next” and saw his most high-profile success in the excellent “Drinking Buddies” with Olivia Wilde, Jake Johnson, and Anna Kendrick. The year ended with the announcement that his next feature, “Happy Christmas,” starring Kendrick & Lena Dunham, will play in competition at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival.
And that’s not even the whole Swanberg story. There’s a whole separate film opening in some markets and premiering on VOD this weekend, written, directed, edited, and shot by Swanberg, called “All the Light in the Sky,” and it’s a surprisingly amiable, enjoyable piece of work. It features minimal dramatic thrust, even for Swanberg, but the cast works and Swanberg finds a gentle, interesting tone in the way he sketches a woman over a seemingly average few days of her life but who may...

The AFI Film Fest (11.01-11.08) have announced the line-ups for our favorite sections at the fest in the Young American selections and New Auteurs section and they’ve managed to stack up on titles that are amongst the year’s best and which in the case of two films were mysteriously passed over by the likes of Telluride, Tiff and Nyff. Michel Franco’s After Lucia (see pic above) and Antonio Campos’ Simon Killer will be making the Los Angeles premieres accompanied by the best title to come out of the Main Comp at this year’s Cannes edition in Sergei Loznitsa’s In the Fog. This trio will be joined by a trio of gems that recently premiered at Tiff in: Maja Miloš’ Clip, Gabriela Pichler’s Eat Sleep Die and Tobias Lindholm’s A Hijacking. Title: How To Cheat Writer-director: Amber Sealey Starring: Kent Osborne, Amber Sealey, Amanda Street, Gabriel Diamond, Paulette Osborne A dramatic competition title at the Los Angeles Film Festival, writer-director Amber Sealey’s How To Cheat is a seriocomic depiction of the messiness of modern marriage, and the temptation of infidelity. On the surface, a minor sort of thematic companion piece might be something like Kate Aselton’s The Freebie, in which she starred with Dax Shepard as a married couple who, trying to liven up their stagnant sex life, agree to mutual one-night-only, no-strings-attached hall passes, only to find discord and regret in their decision. Sealey’s movie, however, is a bit more subjectively focused and channeled...

Beginning in downtown Los Angeles with Richard Linklater’s well-received “Bernie” on June 16, and wrapping up on June 26 with “Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark,” the 2011 Laff managed to infuse its festival with the key ingredients of celebration and levity that make it one of the most enjoyable festivals on the planet.
Free outdoor screenings of classic comedies and contemporary documentaries, guest directors and artists-in-residence such as Guillermo del Toro and Erykah Badu, conversations and chats with Julie Taymor, James Franco, Jack Black and Shirley Maclaine, and a lounge sponsored by Jameson whiskey, all added up to another winning festival, the last planned under Dawn Hudson’s leadership of Film Independent.
With the two top juried awards each carrying a $15,000 cash prize for that film’s director, there is always weighted attention paid to the winners.

Updated through 6/27.
This year's Los Angeles Film Festival, running through June 26, opens tonight with the latest from Richard Linklater, and Steven Zeitchik talks with him for the Los Angeles Times: "'It was my most difficult one to get made,' he said flatly. 'It took 12 years to happen, and even then it was tough. People can say shooting in 22 days makes a movie better. It doesn't.' … Bernie is a shaggy, idiosyncratic work, possibly the strangest yet in a career full of strangeness. Set in the small town of Carthage, Texas, it tells of an effeminate, musical-loving mortician named Bernie Tiede [Jack Black] who befriends and then commits a horrible crime against a repressed wealthy matriarch [Shirley MacLaine], leaving him to face the wrath of a local prosecutor [Matthew McConaughey]. The movie is a dramatization of an actual case — the script was based on a 1998 Texas Monthly article about Tiede, and Linklater, who attended Tiede's trial,...

La Film Fest is just about wrapped up and awards have been announced for the Narrative Competition films premiering at this year's festival. The $15,000 top Narrative Prize went to Stéphane Lafleur's Familiar Ground. While I have yet to catch Lafleur's French-Canadian deadpan comedy, I did see and like How to Cheat - which took home the Best Performance award for the ensemble cast of Amber Sealey, Kent Osborne, Amanda Street, and Gabriel Diamond. Here's a quick look at a few of the competition films premiering at this year's fest: My pick of the competition lineup is Mike Akel's An Ordinary Family. This very well scripted verite piece, co-written and produced by Matthew Patterson, takes us inside a family vacation that becomes a bit...

Whenever you hear about a situation where someone has cheated, you typically side with the person being cheated on and not the two participating in the cheating. However in How To Cheat, Amanda Street turns in a multi-dimensional portrayal of the woman who gets involved with married Mark (Kent Osborne), making her character Louise infuriating, confusing and compelling. There are always two sides to a story, but Louise makes you wonder about the third side and where her character is coming from.

In her second directorial effort, How To Cheat, Amber Sealey takes on the taboo subject of cheating on one’s marriage. Rather than the narrative we have seen before with a husband unexpectedly being tempted or making a mistake one drunken night, How To Cheat has Beth’s (as played by Sealey) husband Mark (Kent Osborne) make the conscious decision to cheat and work to find a partner willing to cheat with him.

In How To Cheat, Kent Osborne plays a husband, Mark, so intent on escaping his life and feeling something over than the overwhelming sadness plaguing him, he decides to do something drastic – cheat on his wife. Osborne’s performance of a man on the edge, while never losing his affable charm, gives Mark heart, humor, and honesty and brings the audience into his frustration rather than simply judging him for his actions. You never want Mark to cheat, but if he does, you continue to root for him and hope that in the end, he finds the happiness he is so desperately seeking.

There are certain things in this world you know are wrong. It is wrong to steal, it is wrong to lie, it is wrong to cheat. But is anything ever that simple or black and white?
