The new Netflix miniseries Eric asks one of the universal questions: What if Jim Henson was an emotionally abusive drunk, his son went missing in mid-Eighties New York City, the investigation involved crooked cops and a queer nightclub and an underground encampment for the unhoused, and Henson began hallucinating conversations with his newest Muppet as a way to cope with all of this?
You know, that old chestnut.

Martin Scorsese Directed 1 Michael Jackson Song That Also Featured Marvel’s Blade Icon Wesley Snipes
Martin Scorsese is one master storyteller known for his incredible works like Taxi Driver, Goodfellas, Raging Bull, and the most recent, Killers of the Flower Moon. A filmmaker like no other, Scorsese’s innovative use of camera work, meticulous attention to detail, and thought-provoking narrative makes him stand out from the rest.

A multiple-award-winning filmmaker, it is unusual to imagine that Scorsese would have directed a music video, that too for a pop icon like Michael Jackson. But that is what happened back in the 1980s when he collaborated with Jackson for the music video of his critical hit, Bad, which also coincidentally starred Wesley Snipes.

HBO pioneered many of the genres and formats that have become standards in the modern TV industry. Its shows have become synonymous with entire eras: the pop culture of the early 2000s is impossible to imagine without Sex and the City, the 2010s without Game of Thrones, the 2020s without Euphoria.
The success of The Sopranos and Sex and the City, which ensured HBO's special status in the media culture of the 2000s, somewhat overshadowed the third truly revolutionary series of the decade, which largely determined the style of the network's future projects: The Wire.
The Wire Was a Revolutionary TV Project
Created by David Simon, a former Baltimore Sun reporter, the show pioneered the challenging experimental solutions that would later be associated with Game of Thrones. First, The Wire revived the clichéd genre of the police procedural, just as Game of Thrones has rehabilitated the geek fantasy.

Tony Ganios, the comedic actor known for his turn as fan-favorite Meat in Bob Clark’s “Porky’s” and as Perry in Philip Kaufman’s 1979 coming-of-age comedy-drama “The Wanderers,” died Feb. 18 following surgery at a hospital in New York. He was 64.
Ganios’ finacée shared the news on social media — publishing a tweet that featured a photo of the two holding hands with the caption, “I love you so much, my love. I’m broken.” She later followed up with a tweet containing a photo of Ganios and the caption, “The last words we said to each other were, “I love you.” Love is an understatement. Tony Ganios, the actor who made his film debut in Philip Kaufman’s 1979 coming-of-age comedy-drama The Wanderers and played audience favorite Anthony ‘Meat’ Tuperello in the 1980s Porky’s sex comedy franchise, died Sunday following surgery at a hospital in New York. He was 64.
His death was announced on social media by his fiancée, Amanda Serrano-Ganios, who said that the actor fell ill last week, was hospitalized Saturday with a spinal cord infection, and passed away Sunday of heart failure.
Cast as one of the Bronx Italian-American street toughs in the 1963-set The Wanderers, based on the novel by Richard Price, Ganios became, for much of the ’80s, a go-to actor for directors looking for a touch of East Coast flavor. Ganios re-teamed with his Wanderers co-star Ken Wahl for a recurring role as a mob lawyer on Wahl’s 1987-90 crime series Wiseguy.

Roger Kastel, the artist behind the famed “Jaws” poster of a leviathan lurking underneath a swimmer, has died at the age of 92 from heart and kidney failure.
The unforgettable image was originally used as the cover for the paperback version of the Peter Benchley novel that the movie was based on; it was later appropriated by the movie’s promotional and marketing campaign.
The original hardcover artwork featured a much smoother, less menacing-looking shark. Kastel gave it some teeth.

In 1986, Tom Cruise was on top of the world. Top Gun had come out and become the biggest movie of the year, minting him as a bonafide superstar. However, Cruise had bigger ambitions beyond being an action hero or heartthrob. He wanted to be a legitimate, respected actor; so before Top Gun ever hit theaters, he had already wrapped a role where he’d play opposite one of the biggest movies stars of all time – Paul Newman – whose career Cruise would likely want to emulate as the older actor was able to find the perfect balance between art and commerce, while never sacrificing his brand as a star. Their movie together – The Color of Money – would go on to be a highlight of both’s filmographies, and a notable gritty effort that paired them both, for the only time, with the great Martin Scorsese.

The award, which will be presented March 5 at the 75th anniversary WGA Awards in New York City, is named after the famed writer who fronted for Dalton Trumbo and Ring Lardner Jr. during the Hollywood Blacklist before being blacklisted himself. "The Wire" co-creator David Simon often compares the show to a modern Greek tragedy, going so far as to reimagine mythic Gods moved into intractable American institutions. Capitalism, drug dealing, policing, politics, education, and the media are all examined in great detail, giving you a full picture of why the characters are helpless, and fundamentally incapable of changing anything beyond, maybe, their personal situations.
The series is set in Baltimore, which occasionally gave it some difficulties due to the bleak urban picture it painted, but as co-creator Ed Burns said, "we could've taken that show into any city." Burns and Simon just had decades of life and experience in Baltimore from which to draw.
"The Wire" began with a narrow focus that gradually expanded to dig into Baltimore's nooks and crannies. The show's first season mostly focuses on the plights of both the Barksdale criminal organization and the Baltimore P.

Richard Price wasn't exactly the most obvious choice to adapt Stephen King's 2018 book "The Outsider" into a TV mini-series. Far from a novice in this area, Price had already adapted novels like "The Color of Money" and even his own books "Clockers" and "Freedomland" into films. But his speciality had always been crime thrillers and mysteries that pit their leads against firmly human horrors, rather than fantastical foes like the creature at the heart of King's story.
In Price's hands, "The Outsider" is less "It" and more "True Detective," despite the ancient child-killing entity at the heart of its plot. It's also a ghost story, if not in the typical sense. In a change from King's original novel, the show's protagonist, detective Ralph Anderson (Ben Mendelsohn), is haunted by the death of his young son from cancer some years prior to the series' events. As Price saw it, this...

‘The Wire’ Creators Say Show Couldn’t Be Made in Age of ‘Game of Thrones’: Now, ‘It’s Got to Be Big’
“The Wire” co-creators Ed Burns and David Simon have spent two decades reflecting on the legacy of their critically acclaimed HBO series.
Burns and Simon, along with fellow “Wire” alum George Pelecanos, most recently turned their attention to the true story of the Baltimore Police Department’s corrupt Gun Trace Task Force for the HBO limited series “We Own This City,” starring Jon Bernthal as a real-life cop convicted of stealing and selling drugs.
Yet on the 20th anniversary of “The Wire,” which premiered June 2, 2002, retired Baltimore homicide detective Burns criticized other modern HBO series, saying that “The Wire” would “definitely not” have been greenlit if pitched today.
“Now, it’s got to be ‘Game of Thrones.’ It’s got to be big. It’s got to be disconnected from stepping on anybody’s toes,” Burns told The New York Times. “I’ve watched a couple of the limited series on HBO,...

Under the multi-year pact, Erickson will exclusively work with the indie studio on the creation and development of television series on which he will serve as writer-showrunner or supervise other writers.
As part of the deal, Erickson is developing The Jaunt, based on the 1981 Stephen King short story originally published in The Twilight Zone Magazine. The Jaunt explores a future where teleportation, called ‘jaunting,’ has become a commonplace, if still dangerous and mysterious, technology.
“We’ve long admired Dave’s visionary creative work and are thrilled to welcome him to MRC,” said Elise Henderson, President of MRC Television. “A true master of his craft, he’s the ideal partner to build upon the work of Stephen King, and create and develop more originals as the studio continues to expand.”

Spike Lee’s 1995 thriller Clockers, based on the novel by Richard Price, drew some of the best reviews of Delroy Lindo’s career, but astonishingly, it has taken 25 years for the duo to reunite, for the Netflix streaming hit Da 5 Bloods, and the results are just as incendiary. Cast against type, and almost over the actor’s dead body, as a Maga-hatted Trump supporter, Lindo dominates a superb ensemble cast as Paul, a bitter, tormented Vietnam vet who reconvenes his old platoon to go looking for a cache of gold hidden in the jungles in which they once fought.
Deadline: It’s been a while since you last worked with Spike. When did you two first meet?
Delroy Lindo: I first met Spike at my audition for Malcolm X in New York. It was very, very brief. You know, it was not an introduction per se. He may have shaken my hand.

Back in January 2020, aka the good old days, HBO released its TV adaptation of Stephen King’s “The Outsider.” Based on a book that is as intrinsically unsound as it is painfully overwritten, Richard Price still managed to make an absorbing, even exciting televised version, with the help of a great cast. Such a remodeling feat deserves its own “Extreme Makeover” episode, but despite the first season’s success, “The Outsider” is already over. HBO chose not to proceed with a second season, and now, as 2020 crawls to the finish line, I can only hope a similar fate awaits “The Stand.” Billed as a limited series but with all the pacing problems and world-building holes of a warm-up season, this King-ly bookend to the year in television is both the wrong kind of timely and another miscalculated rejiggering of the author’s longest novel.
It is also miscast, in nearly every role.

Here’s a fun little look behind the curtain. Back when HBO announced the release date of Richard Price’s atmospheric Stephen King adaptation, The Outsider, Den of Geek ran the news as an article, as one does.
Shortly after the article went live, representatives from HBO reached out to clarify that they weren’t categorizing the project as a “miniseries” as many outlets (and none other than Wikipedia itself) had reported but rather a traditional series. It seemed clear then that HBO had at least the possibility of multiple seasons in mind when it greenlit the show. After all, why wouldn’t they? Stephen King adaptations always tend to do well and The Outsider boasted a solid cast and an intriguing concept true crime-meets- the-supernatural concept
The Outsider would then go on to pull off 10 good episodes, receive modest-to-excellent critical acclaim, kill it in the ratings, and drive online...

“The Outsider” could head elsewhere. A second season following Cynthia Erivo’s character is being shopped after HBO passed, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.
The Stephen King adaption is from MRC, who is taking the project out to streaming and pay-cable networks. The second season goes past the book the first season was based on by writer and executive producer Richard Price. HBO opted against going forward with the second season; the network initially greenlit “The Outsider” as a limited series.
Along with Erivo, “The Outsider” starred Ben Mendelsohn, Bill Camp, Paddy Considine, Jeremy Bobb, Mare Winningham and Jason Bateman, the latter of which was an executive producer.
“We enjoyed our collaboration with Richard, Jason, Andrew (Bernstein), and the MRC team, and we wish them well in continuing the world created by the brilliant Stephen King,” HBO said in a statement.

HBO is not moving forward with a second season of its Stephen King series “The Outsider,” Deadline confirms. The news comes as a bit of a shock considering showrunner Richard Price had been actively developing a second season of the show with Stephen King’s blessing. “The Outsider” was a buzzy hit for HBO at the start of 2020, becoming a word-of-mouth favorite over 10 episodes. The finale earned 2.2 million viewers across all platforms, a 90 percent jump from its series premiere episode. The show starred Jason Bateman, Cynthia Erivo, and Ben Mendelsohn.
“We enjoyed our collaboration with Richard, Jason [Bateman], Andrew [Bernstein], and the MRC team, and we wish them well in continuing the world created by the brilliant Stephen King,” HBO said in a statement to Deadline.

Exclusive: The Outsider, starring Ben Mendelsohn and Cynthia Erivo, has been put into turnaround after HBO opted not to proceed with a second season. MRC, the studio behind the drama series adaptation of Stephen King’s novel, is taking Season 2 out to market.
The pitch, originally presented to HBO, includes a script and bible for a continuation of the story beyond King’s book, which was the source material for Season 1. Series writer/executive producer Richard Price crafted the Season 2 storyline with King’s blessing, sources said. Centered on Erivo’s Holly character, it expands King’s universe, exploring the human, naturalistic and inexplicable with a sustained pervasive dread you can’t put your finger on.

HBO is finished with The Outsider.
The premium cable outlet has canceled the show after a single season, which enjoyed strong viewership during its 10-episode run earlier this year. The decision comes eight months after The Outsider’s finale aired in March.
MRC Television, which produces the series based on Stephen King’s novel of the same name, will try to find a new home for it. Showrunner Richard Price remains attached to a possible second season.

Fans of HBO’s crime-horror series “The Outsider” have been waiting for months for the network to announce a Season 2 renewal, which is why Stephen King has great news: scripts for a second season of “The Outsider” have already been written. From the way King talks in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, it sounds as if HBO is definitely moving forward with “The Outsider” Season 2. The series is developed by Richard Price based on King’s 2018 novel of the same name.
Both HBO’s “The Outsider” and Audience network’s King adaptation “Mr. Mercedes” feature the character of Holly Gibney, played by Oscar nominee Cynthia Erivo in the former and Justine Lupe in the latter. When asked which actress played the better Holly, King noted Lupe had the unfair advantage because “Mr. Mercedes” ran for three seasons. King added “Cynthia may get that time, because there’s going to...

Photo: 'The Outsider'/HBO Richard Price’s new horror series – 'The Outsider' – brings a new perspective to adapted Stephen King content. The new horror series based on the book of the same name, premiered on HBO this January and has been a hot topic ever since. A series surrounding a strange murder, 'The Outsider' follows the investigation unit in a friendly Georgia town, as they run into the supernatural, unprecedented evidence, and outrageous theories. What once seemed like a straightforward case, quickly becomes a tangled web. So what makes this different from any other Stephen King adaptation? This series is driven by a group of characters so different, yet so similar. Terry Maitland (Jason Bateman) is the little league coach everyone knows and adores. Ralph Anderson (Ben Mendelsohn) is a trustworthy cop who is finding his way after the death of his son. And Holly Gibney...

Update, September 22: Martin Scorsese, a frequent collaborator of Chapman’s, has issued the following statement following the cinematographer’s passing: “I consider myself so fortunate to have been able to work with Michael Chapman. Michael and I made three films together—’Taxi Driver,’ ‘The Last Waltz,’ and ‘Raging Bull,’ and he brought something rare and irreplaceable to each of them.”
Scorsese continues, “I remember when ‘Taxi Driver’ came out and Michael became known as a ‘poet of the streets’—I think that was the wording, and it seemed right to me. Michael was the one who really controlled the visual palette of ‘The Last Waltz,’ and on ‘Raging Bull’ he and his team met every single challenge—and there were so many. One of the greatest of those challenges was shooting in black and white, which Michael had never done before, a fact that still astonishes me. His relationship...

While many writers like to isolate themselves from the world whenever they’re busy with new projects, Stephen King seems perfectly capable of multitasking. An unbelievably productive author, he can work on his manuscripts whilst simultaneously keeping up to date with the latest films and TV series, all while sharing recommendations with his fanbase.
Recently, for instance, King shared his love for the Netflix show Dark. This horror series is the company’s first German-language production to be aired in the United States, and despite initial fears that fans would not be willing to invest in a show where they had to read subtitles, it eventually garnered a ton of attention.
Now, King wants you to check out a series called The Capture. It’s currently available on Peacock, which is NBCUniversal’s new streaming service. The writer adds that people who enjoyed The Outsider will enjoy this one, too,...

Stephen King novel adaptations are not a new concept, but mastering how to convert the famous author’s work into a compelling psychological thriller was a task that HBO’s miniseries “The Outsider” was able to accomplish, leaving fans to speculate if there might be a sequel to the drama series.

As a teenager, I walked the streets of Times Square, warned about its squalid, sordid nature. It was clear from the movie marquees that porn was readily available along with peep shows and prostitutes were visible on many street corners.
HBO’s The Deuce filled in the gaps in my knowledge by exploring what went on inside those buildings as it expertly showcased the pimps, prostitutes, porn producers, and mobsters whose lives were inextricably intertwined along with the politicians, cops, and reporters on the fringes. A group of leading long-form journalists have launched a podcast studio backed by Sister, the production group run by Elisabeth Murdoch, Stacey Snider and Jane Featherstone and behind hit HBO/Sky drama Chernobyl.
Josh Dean, Vanessa Grigoriadis and Matthew Shaer as well as screenwriter and producer Adam Hoff have formed Campside, which will focus on premium narrative non-fiction storytelling.
Campside has formed with a “significant” start-up investment from Sister. The company has a slate of around 11 non-fiction podcasts in production or development spanning the true crime, scandal, and adventure genres.
Stacey Snider, Global Chief Executive of Sister, and the Campside quartet told Deadline how the deal came about and what they hope to achieve.
Campside’s first podcast will be a 10-part series on the Hollywood Con Queen scam, which has seen hundreds of people in town taken in by a person impersonating the likes of Amy Pascal and Kathleen Kennedy.

Think twice before betting against Ben Mendelsohn.
An esteemed actor respected by peers and audiences alike, Mendelsohn is one of those actors who digs deep into a role, and when he is given one as complex as Det. Ralph Anderson on the Stephen King horror/crime thriller series “The Outsider,” you can count on the Australian actor to be back in the Emmy hunt.

Mendelsohn is, of course, no stranger to Emmy. In 2016, he scored a famed shocker of an upset victory against a phalanx of heavy hitters to win as Best Drama Supporting Actor. It was for his performance as Danny Rayburn, the black sheep of a family riddled with secrets in the Netflix series “Bloodline.” (Mendelsohn also received a nomination the prior year for the same role.)

What’s that eerie Stephen King-like sound effect? That’s the whistling hole in our collective viewing soul now that “The Outsider” has concluded 10 taut episodes. The supernatural mystery where good and evil duke it out using humans as game pieces is classic King. With “The Outsider,” HBO has a miniseries adaptation for the ages.
An all-star team of talent propels the story. A popular local little league coach (Jason Bateman) accused of a bad, bad little boy thing. A skeptical dogged detective can’t make the clues of a series of child killings fit the forensic facts. Enter a woman of magical thinking who connects the dots, discovers a demon, battles deniers and cracks a small Oklahoma town open to the gates of hell.

Will the Emmys embrace a horror series where a believer and a skeptic investigate a murder with supernatural overtones? That was the premise of “The Outsider,” which concluded its season on March 8, but it also describes “The X-Files,” the groundbreaking series that helped open doors for genre programs at the Emmys, but couldn’t quite walk through it itself. How will “The Outsider” do with the TV academy?
“The X-Files” was about FBI partners Mulder and Scully (David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson) who investigated unexplained crimes and incidents while also trying to unravel a conspiracy deep within the government. It won 16 Emmys over the course of its run, including one for Anderson as Best Drama Actress, but the show never won Best Drama Series despite four straight nominations (1995-1998).

Cutting deep into cable viewership on Sunday night, the wound on Cynthia Erivo’s character’s arm in the mid-credits scene of the finale of The Outsider was just the latest but surely not last twist in the tale of the HBO miniseries based on Stephen King’s 2018 novel.
Coming in with a season high of 1.37 million viewers for its 9 Pm first run airing on March 8, the Richard Price penned 10th episode of the Ben Mendelsohn, Marc Menchaca and Jason Bateman co-starrer capped a run that saw the horror crime drama top another record, of sorts. With the first nine episodes of the Media Rights Capital produced Outsider averaging 9 million viewers on combined platforms, the mini is aiming to be have the best overall run of an HBO drama since the soon-to-be returning Westworld debuted back in the ancient era of 2015.

The following contains spoilers for The Outsider episode 10.
Stephen King adaptation The Outsider just wrapped up its moody, and at times terrifying 10-episodes on HBO. That means we can now get down to the important question…will there be The Outsider season 2 on the horizon?
This seems to be an increasingly common conundrum over at HBO. As of late, the pay cable network is fond of introducing what appear to be close-ended miniseries that nevertheless leave the door open for future seasons. We saw it with Watchmen’s conclusion and now the question is raised once again with The Outsider. Or at least that’s how things look at first glance. In reality, there may be much more hope for The Outsider season 2 than there ever was for Watchmen season 2.
For starters, despite many assumptions to the contrary, The Outsider was never billed as a miniseries or limited series by HBO.

This The Outsider feature contains spoilers for the finale.
In the end, The Outsider’s slow burn appears to have been worth it. HBO’s Stephen King adaptation has always been a good, well-crafted show. But few would argue that its nine episodes leading up to this finale have been chock full of adrenaline-pounding moments
That all changes in this final hour. “Must/Can’t” is the thrilling and kinetic finale that a story so patient and beautifully-made deserves. Ralph Anderson, Holly Gibney, and all their allies finally come face-to-face with the entity known as El Coco. Now let’s break down exactly what happened.
Who Died in The Outsider Finale?
A better question might be “who didn’t die in The Outsider finale?” Fulfilling the promise of last week’s explosive ending, this finale opens with an absolute massacre at the hands of the El Coco-controlled Jack Hoskins (Marc Menchaca...
