Paul D’Amato, the actor who played the gloriously vicious Tim “Dr. Hook” McCracken opposite Paul Newman in Slap Shot, died Monday after a long battle with progressive supranuclear palsy, a rare brain condition that is similar to Parkinson’s disease. D’Amato was 76.
The news was shared online by his longtime partner (and fellow actor) Marina Re.
D’Amato got the role in Slap Shot in part because he could hold his own on the ice. He played college hockey at Emerson and also for a team called The Reds in a Burlington, Vt, league in 1975.
But D’Amato also had screen presence, going toe to toe with Newman as his character’s wild-eyed nemesis from the Syracuse Bulldogs who earned his nickname through his scalpel-like skills with a hockey stick. Newman’s Reggie Dunlop called out McCracken by name during a pregame radio interview, referring to him as the...

Mark Ruffalo recalled the moment he accidentally popped Channing Tatum‘s eardrum while they were filming 2014’s Foxcatcher.
The Poor Things actor appeared on the latest episode of Hot Ones, where he told host Sean Evans that the Magic Mike star “did ask me to slap the shit out of him.”
Ruffalo quipped that “it was easy to do because he’d beaten the shit out of me so many times” since the co-stars had “like four months of wrestling, of learning how to wrestle together” for the film.
The Bennett Miller-directed film explores the real-life story of wealthy heir John du Pont, who murdered U.S. Olympic wrestler Dave Schultz in 1996. Tatum and Ruffalo play brothers Mark and David Schultz, respectively, while Steve Carell plays John du Pont.
Ruffalo explained that Tatum had “30 pounds on me so when it came time to smack the shit out of him,...

Adapted from Anthony Doerr’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, Netflix’s limited series “All the Light We Cannot See” sets two unlikely kindred spirits on a collision course as World War II begins in France when Germany occupied the country. Shawn Levy directed all four episodes of Steven Knight’s scripts.
Marie-Laure LeBlanc (Aria Mia Loberti) and Werner Pfennig (Louis Hoffman) share curiosity and empathy, which translates across their opposing countries and positions in the war. Werner’s skill for fixing and translating radios leads him to a high position in the Nazi effort to decode secret broadcasts that their targets might send. Marie-Laure herself becomes a broadcaster after her father moves her to her uncle’s home in a small, seaside French town.

One of the best things about the Academy Awards is that, unlike the Golden Globes with its two sets of lead actor and actress lineups, is that genres don’t matter when it comes to the four acting categories. Therefore, it is a more meaningful honor. But it also makes getting recognition for worthy work can be more difficult.
That often creates a pool of performers who have had several nominations but no wins. Or someone who always comes in sixth on the ballot and has yet to receive any gilded acclaim. If you check out Gold Derby’s combined Oscar odds, there are more than a few lead actors in the running who fit these descriptions that pop right out. Here is the list of the overdue according to their standing on the prediction site:

Although highly regarded as a theater star — he earned a Tony nomination in 2006 for “Awake and Sing!” and just returned to Broadway last season in “The Price” — Mark Ruffalo is for most people a bona fide movie star. For his film performances, he has been nominated for three Oscars, two Golden Globes and four Screen Actors Guild Awards, winning one as part of the ensemble cast of “Spotlight” in 2015.

These days, however, Ruffalo’s greatest fame is largely thanks to his being part of the Marvel universe, having taken over the roles of Dr. Bruce Banner and The Hulk in 2012’s “Marvel’s The Avengers.” After a cameo performance in 2013’s “Iron Man 3,” Ruffalo’s Hulk also appeared in “Avengers: Age of Ultron” in 2015, “Thor: Ragnarok” in 2017 and is now in theaters in “Avengers: Infinity War.

Though not so long ago nearly every Nicolas Cage movie was a big-budget, wide-release affair, these days his movies are mostly so low-profile you might be forgiven for not knowing he still makes ’em — let alone that he’s done some of his best-ever work very recently. The gonzo displays of blackly comedic quasi-horror pics “Mom and Dad” and “Mandy” fall into that category (though recent thriller “Looking Glass” served no one particularly well), and new Canadian feature “The Humanity Bureau” is none too shabby a showcase, either.
This dystopian road movie is very specifically set in a near-future U.S., but in character couldn’t be more Canuck: more interested in character dynamics and shaggy humor than spectacle, more picaresque than action-driven. Still, director Rob W. King and screenwriter Dave Schultz’s engaging effort has enough standard genre elements to satisfy more open-minded sci-fi fans, and its political-allegory angle...

Tonya Harding didn’t win Olympic gold, but Margot Robbie could win Oscar gold for playing the infamous figure skater. If she does take Best Actress next month, the “I, Tonya” star would be the first performer to earn an Oscar for portraying a real Olympic athlete.
Robbie is only the third person and the first woman to be nominated for playing an Olympian, all of which has occurred this century. Will Smith was up for Best Actor for playing Muhammad Ali, who won Olympic gold in the light heavyweight boxing division in 1960, in 2001’s “Ali” and Mark Ruffalo received his second of three Best Supporting Actor nominations for playing 1984 wrestling gold medalist Dave Schultz, who was murdered by millionaire John du Pont (Steve Carell), in 2014’s “Foxcatcher.” Smith lost to Denzel Washington (“Training Day”) and Ruffalo came up short against J.K. Simmons (“Whiplash”).

The Humanity Bureau has made room in its ranks for Nicolas Cage, according to Deadline, now that the Dog Eat Dog star has signed on for the near-future thriller just as production gears up to begin in British Columbia later this week.

Vampire stories are almost completely played out these days. Between TV shows and movies, there’s far from a shortage of media about blood-suckers at a viewer’s disposal. But still, that saturation doesn’t mean those stories can’t be entertaining when done well. Dave Schultz’s Rufus isn’t anything revolutionary in terms of vampire movies, but it’s still handled in an interesting way, full of intrigue, mystery, and emotion.
Rufus tells the story of a vampire (Rory Saper) left alone in a small town, trying to fit in and not allow anyone to find out what he is. He is taken in by the sheriff (David James Elliot) and the sheriff’s wife (Kelly Rowan) after his traveling companion is struck by a truck. From there, he begins to become one of the family, making friends with those around him, including a neighborhood girl (Merritt Patterson...

Over a year has passed since we first learned that director David Schultz was working on a vampire movie but Rufus didn't sound like a typical bloodsucker story. Sure, it centers on a 200 year old vampire who looks like a teenager trying to blend into small town life but it also didn't raise the red flags customary with this kind of set-up, mostly because Schultz's earlier film, the coming of age story 45 Rpm, worked so well within familiar ground. It also helped that Schultz was interested in incorporating a bit of comedy into the mix and the melting pot of ideas seems to have paid off. [Continued ...]...
