"Nightmare as a Child" isn't the best episode of "The Twilight Zone," or even the fifth or sixth best. On IMDb, the episode has the 93rd slot when ranking by user ratings, putting it in the lower half of the series' 153-episode run, while Paste's ranking puts it in a more generous 45th position. The episode, which appears late in the show's first season, could be more tightly plotted and punctuated with stronger lines, but it still deserves far more credit than it gets. "Nightmare as a Child" is actually one of the most upsetting episodes of the entire mind-bending series, as it examines a human phenomenon that's far more disturbing than aliens or robots: repressed memories.
The episode tells the story of Helen Foley, a teacher who meets a precocious and unsettling little girl (Terry Burnham) on the stairs outside her apartment. We know little about Helen except that she loves kids,...

With an acting career that spans work for Cecil B. DeMille and Joseph Losey to Quentin Tarantino and David Lynch, Russ Tamblyn’s creativity and longevity is proof that there’s life after child stardom. In Tamblyn’s case, there’s also been a bounty of juicy film and TV roles long after his legendary legs no longer kicked up movie musicals such as “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers” and “West Side Story.” His decades in film and TV include all genres, from Robert Wise’s suspense classic “The Haunting” to George Pal’s colorful kidfare, such as “Tom Thumb” and “Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm” and Lynch’s “Twin Peaks” series. It’s a career he explores in his upcoming memoir, “Dancing on the Edge.”
It was in 1948, eight years before the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. touted his arrival as “Most Promising Newcomer,” that Tamblyn first appeared in...

One of Max Ophüls’ best American movies is this razor-sharp ‘domestic film noir’ with excellent acting and a premise that was probably too sordid-real for 1949: cheap crooks blackmail an ordinary housewife trying to protect her family. Joan Bennett confronts the crisis head-on, facing down James Mason’s unusually sympathetic ‘collector.’

Does every great actress see Joan of Arc as the ultimate serious role? Ingrid Bergman ran into serious career trouble while this picture was still in release. Its cast and credits are packed with star talent — is it a misunderstood classic with a great central performance? Ms. Bergman was so enamored with the character that she played it twice.

Dana Andrews movies: Film noir actor excelled in both major and minor crime dramas. Dana Andrews movies: First-rate film noir actor excelled in both classics & minor fare One of the best-looking and most underrated actors of the studio era, Dana Andrews was a first-rate film noir/crime thriller star. Oftentimes dismissed as no more than a “dependable” or “reliable” leading man, in truth Andrews brought to life complex characters that never quite fit into the mold of Hollywood's standardized heroes – or rather, antiheroes. Unlike the cynical, tough-talking, and (albeit at times self-delusionally) self-confident characters played by the likes of Alan Ladd, Edward G. Robinson, James Cagney, Humphrey Bogart, and, however lazily, Robert Mitchum, Andrews created portrayals of tortured men at odds with their social standing, their sense of ethics, and even their romantic yearnings. Not infrequently, there was only a very fine line separating his (anti)heroes from most movie villains.

Claudette Colbert movies on Turner Classic Movies: From ‘The Smiling Lieutenant’ to TCM premiere ‘Skylark’ (photo: Claudette Colbert and Maurice Chevalier in ‘The Smiling Lieutenant’) Claudette Colbert, the studio era’s perky, independent-minded — and French-born — "all-American" girlfriend (and later all-American wife and mother), is Turner Classic Movies’ star of the day today, August 18, 2014, as TCM continues with its "Summer Under the Stars" film series. Colbert, a surprise Best Actress Academy Award winner for Frank Capra’s 1934 comedy It Happened One Night, was one Paramount’s biggest box office draws for more than decade and Hollywood’s top-paid female star of 1938, with reported earnings of $426,944 — or about $7.21 million in 2014 dollars. (See also: TCM’s Claudette Colbert day in 2011.) Right now, TCM is showing Ernst Lubitsch’s light (but ultimately bittersweet) romantic comedy-musical The Smiling Lieutenant (1931), a Best Picture Academy Award nominee starring Maurice Chevalier as a French-accented Central European lieutenant in...

Earlier this week, I looked at recent releases of Easter-season choral works by J.S. Bach and one of his sons. Today I cover a bit more historical range in terms of composers and eras, again sticking to recent releases.
Maria Venuti, Keith Lewis, Michel Brodard/Gächingen Chorale of Stuttgart/Bach Collegium of Stuttgart/Helmuth Rilling Christus am Ölberge, Op. 85 (Hänssler Classic)
Written in 1802 in just 14 days (but not published for a decade, hence the high opus number), Christus am Ölberge (Christ on the Mount of Olives) is a dramatic oratorio depicting Christ's emotional acceptance of his fate during His conversation with an angel in the garden of Gethsemene, followed by His arrest and Peter's protest.
It's not one of my favorite pieces; there's just one memorable chorus (all the way at the end) and a lot of fairly rote Beethovenisms. Even the composer spoke disparagingly of it, disliking the libretto.

Joan Fontaine movies: ‘This Above All,’ ‘Letter from an Unknown Woman’ (photo: Cary Grant, Joan Fontaine in ‘Suspicion’ publicity image) (See previous post: “Joan Fontaine Today.”) Also tonight on Turner Classic Movies, Joan Fontaine can be seen in today’s lone TCM premiere, the flag-waving 20th Century Fox release The Above All (1942), with Fontaine as an aristocratic (but socially conscious) English Rose named Prudence Cathaway (Fontaine was born to British parents in Japan) and Fox’s top male star, Tyrone Power, as her Awol romantic interest. This Above All was directed by Anatole Litvak, who would guide Olivia de Havilland in the major box-office hit The Snake Pit (1948), which earned her a Best Actress Oscar nod. In Max Ophüls’ darkly romantic Letter from an Unknown Woman (1948), Fontaine delivers not only what is probably the greatest performance of her career, but also one of the greatest movie performances ever. His father left shortly after Joe's birth and Joe changed his surname to Flanigan after John Flanigan, his step father who adopted him. Joe spent most of his childhood at a ranch near Reno, Nevada when his family relocated there when he was aged 6. Joe attended boarding school in Ojai, California at 15. Here he had the lead role in the school production of A Streetcar Named Desire, where he played Stanley Kowalski. After he graduated high school, Joe attended the university of Colorado. Here he read for a history degree and starred in the production of Coriolanus. Joe was seen as shy (hard to believe now) and was told by a friend to take up acting as a means to alleviate his timidness. Said Joe, "At one point in college,...

MGM has released the entire collective series of the popular Stargate Atlantis, and they have not held back on the extras.
The complete one hundred episodes from all five seasons are spread out over twenty 1080p Blu-ray DVDs; however, this isn't all. The Blu-ray collection also includes a rather staggering fifty hours of additional extras and goodies, including commentaries, set tours, featurettes, deleted scenes, interviews, as well as photo and design galleries.
Stargate Atlantis aired on the Sci-Fi Channel from 2004 through to its unfortunate cancellation in 2009. The show kicks off from the season finale reveal of Stargate Sg-1, wherein it is shown that an alien outpost has been established in Antarctica by a race known as the 'Ancients'.

Stumped for what to buy your friends and family this year? Forget the socks and chocs and bubble bath – our critics have chosen 40 of the best music, film and TV box sets

1 The Beatles Remastered Stereo Box Set (Parlophone)
At £145, the Beatles box set probably costs roughly what a small car did in the early 1960s. But the startling detail on these CDs will repay the outlay for Beatles nerds and mere mortals alike. Its sister release, The Beatles in Mono – 1960s scooter prices, at a guess – is even more desirable, audiophiles reckon.
2 Kraftwerk The Catalogue (Mute/Emi)
Eight albums by the electronic Beatles, dating from 1974's Autobahn, all gleamingly remastered. Costing considerably less than one of Ralf Hütter's beloved bicycles, this is the master text of most electronic genres – electro, techno, even hip-hop – today.

The creation of a Stargate: Atlantis Fans’ Choice disc doesn’t come without a stark revelation on the show’s initial and final levels of quality. That the fans would choose the series’ feature-length pilot episode “Rising” should come as no surprise to those familiar with it, but when compared to the final episode, which also appears on the disc, you realize just how far the production values fell in its five season span. Perhaps the most pertinent question is who the target of this dual-episode set could be. Wouldn’t the loyal fans already own the first and last seasons on DVD, and if so why purchase the bookends on one disc? In which case you have to wonder if there’s any way the set can draw in new viewers on the first episode’s merits. This disc raises so many questions.

All this Taylor Lautner and Robert Pattinson love is well and good, but what about some mature man-packing, gun pounding, Stargate: Atlantis' Joe Flanigan floutin' hotness, to remind us all what Real Men can do for ya' too?
Flannigan is still a bit peeved at the unceremonial way Sg:a was cancelled, telling a Hungarian site that:
“No one is really certain why it was cancelled,” said Flanigan, who playedLt. Colonel John Sheppard for Atlantis’s 5-year, 100-episode run. “Every producer/executive lays the blame on the other so it’s becomes impossible to understand the true reasons. I think our cast did a truly amazing job in helping build a successful franchise, but I don’t think that it is seen that way by the writers and producers.” Still, he's not staying mad for long. He's about to appear in an episode of SyFy's upcoming Warehouse 13, as well as...

The following contains Major Spoilers for "Inquisition," the latest episode of "Stargate: Atlantis" on the SciFi Channel.I love the way "Stargate: Atlantis" burns through well-worn sci-fi plots and cliches but somehow manages to remain consistently entertaining. This week, we were treated to a dolled-up clip show as John Sheppard (Joe Flanigan) and crew were put on trial for Atlantis' "crimes" against humanity. Original? Nope. Fun? Of course. Actually, "Inquisition" was one of the more entertaining clip shows I've seen in ages. Sure, the "trial against humanity" thing was played out even before Q put Picard on the stand 20 years ago. Still, the trial was a great way to examine the effects of Atlantis' tech-heavy expedition on the relatively primitive Pegasus galaxy. Just because ...

The following contains Major Spoilers for "The Shrine," the sixth episode of the fifth and final season of "Stargate: Atlantis." "You're stuck with me, Rodney. Just accept it." -- John Sheppard "You're a good friend, Arthur." -- Rodney McKay After being stuck on top of a Stargate in a flooded valley, McKay falls ill. He is stricken with the Pegasus version of Alzheimer's called "Second Childhood" and is quickly losing his memories. McKay's sister, Jeannie, is brought to Atlantis to say her final goodbyes to her dying brother. But Ronon has a risky plan. His people know of a shrine located on the planet Talus that would allow McKay to return to normal for one day before he dies. So the team head off on a dangerous mission hoping to have one last day with the Rodney McKay they all ...
