Gareth Edwards’ “The Creator” was the big winner at the 22nd Visual Effects Society Awards (held February 21 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel). The AI-themed, sci-fi actioner earned five awards, including the top photoreal feature VFX prize. The other awards were for modeling (Nomad), created environment (Floating Village), effects simulations, and compositing & lighting (Bar).
“The Creator” utilized an innovative streamlining process in post, in which Ilm designed and placed the naturalistic VFX over the actors playing AI simulants and the photographic plates as set extensions. This made the $80 million indie look like a $200 million blockbuster, with director Edwards shooting the entire film guerilla-style in 80 locations throughout Southeast Asia as the primary camera operator with a small crew and natural light.
Meanwhile, “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” the animated feature Oscar favorite (snubbed by the Academy’s VFX branch), took home four awards, including the top animated VFX prize. Sony Pictures Imageworks innovated...

While “Avengers: Infinity War” topped the 17th annual Ves Awards (to be held February 5th at the Beverly Hilton Hotel) with six nominations, “Black Panther,” Marvel’s other Oscar frontrunner, was shut out. And Damien Chazelle’s acclaimed “First Man,” another frontrunner, was included in the supporting category as a result of its invisible VFX. Disney’s “Mary Poppins Returns,” meanwhile, was also snubbed.
However, joining “Infinity War” in the top VFX category were a surprising list: “Ready Player One” (with five nominations), “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” “Christopher Robin” and “Welcome to Marwen.” Joining “First Man” for supporting VFX were “12 Strong,” Bird Box,” “Bohemian Rhapsody,” and “Outlaw King”.
In animation, Pixar’s “Incredibles 2” was the big winner with five nominations, followed by Sony’s “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” and Disney’s “Ralph Breaks the Internet” with four. They were joined by Illumination’s “The Grinch” and Wes Anderson’s “Isle of Dogs.

The 90th Academy Awards has concluded and I think a lot of movie geeks are happy with the way things played out! I couldn't be more excited to see Guillermo del Toro win Best Director and his film The Shape of Water win Best Picture of the year!
We also saw Gary Oldman win Best Actor, which he definitely deserved! Frances McDormand, took home the Best Actress Award and Sam Rockwell won for Best Supporting Actor for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. Then there was Jordan Peele, who won Best Original Screenplay for Get Out, which so freakin' cool!
Personally, the one film that I didn't think should have won was Call Me By Your Name for Best Adapted Screenplay. Molly's Game, Logan, Mudbound, and The Disaster Artist were all better films with better scripts!
Below you'll find a full list of the nominees with the winners bolded. Are you happy with the winners?...

“War for the Planet of the Apes” from Weta Digital could well be on its way to the elusive VFX Oscar after winning four Ves trophies Tuesday night at the Beverly Hilton (including the top feature prize). Christopher Nolan’s “Dunkirk” won for supporting VFX, Pixar’s “Coco” earned four awards (including VFX for animation), and “Game of Thrones” took home five awards (including VFX for TV).
The “Apes” finale, directed by Matt Reeves, benefited from a Shakespearean performance from Andy Serkis as Caesar, with Weta working its wizardry in much harsher conditions for the performance-captured animation. Not surprisingly, “Apes” additionally won for Caesar, the effects simulations for the thrilling avalanche, and compositing. However, although both “Rise” and “Dawn” captured Ves prizes, neither won the Oscar, so “War” is not a certainty in its race with “Blade Runner 2049.”

“War for the Planet of the Apes” is nominated at the Oscars for Best Visual Effects, following nominations in the same category for 2011’s “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” and 2014’s “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.” Neither “Rise” nor “Dawn” won Visual Effects in their respective years, despite showcasing some of the most realistic effects in film today. “War” is Oscar voters’ final shot at rewarding the film franchise’s groundbreaking visual effects, but much like in previous years, it could be an uphill battle.
“War” is the latest nomination in the “Planet of the Apes” film series for VFX supervisors Joe Letteri, Daniel Barrett and Dan Lemmon, earning nominations for the first two films as well, with Joel Whist earning his first nom alongside them. We're winding down the year-in-review game here at HitFix as 2014 draws to a close. For whatever reason I took a year off of the ballot/superlatives posts, but I'm back with those personal assessments of the best of the year, beginning today with my top picks across the Academy's 24 categories. Check back in tomorrow for a list of winners from this lot, as well as others in a slew of peripheral categories. And of course, feel free to let us know what your Oscar ballot would look like in the comments section below. (Oh, and naturally it goes without saying this post is living in a parallel reality where I'm not confined to a specific branch for nominations and reign supreme over all categories with selections for each.) We'll find out if the Academy agrees with any of this when the 87th annual Oscar nominations are announced on Jan. 15. *** Best...
