As soon as Saw X, the tenth entry in the Saw franchise (you can read our review Here), was released last September, franchise producers Mark Burg and Oren Koules were already talking about the potential of a Saw XI. The official announcement came in December, along with a release date: September 27th. But over the last few months, the filmmakers have come to realize they need some extra time to make Saw XI something special, so the release has been pushed back a year, to September 26, 2025. So Lionsgate has unveiled a teaser trailer asking fans to play the waiting game, and you can check it out in the embed above.

The Losers gather at Boston International Airport to close out their coverage on Stephen King‘s Cell. Now that they’ve explored the 2006 novel, they’re dialing into the 2016 adaptation. Originally announced as an Eli Roth project two months after the book’s release, the film spent 10 torturous years in development hell before finally being unleashed.
What came to fruition is a feature by filmmaker Tod Williams that stars John Cusack, Samuel L. Jackson, Isabelle Fuhrman, Owen Teague, Stacey Keach, and Joshua Mikel. What’s more, King himself penned the screenplay alongside 2009’s Last House on the Left scribe Adam Alleca. Was it worth the wait?

The $550 million renovation of Lincoln Center’s David Geffen Hall will be completed two years earlier than anticipated, with a re-opening now planned for Fall 2022.
In a joint statement released today by Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts and the New York Philharmonic, the cultural organizations said the acceleration of the project will “boost New York City’s economic recovery by creating jobs and opportunities,” with the renovation expected to provide near-term economic support by generating 3,000 construction jobs and more than $600 million in project-related economic activity.
In all, the project is expected to create 6,000 jobs throughout the City and State, the organizations said.
“The goal of accelerating this project is to invest in New York City at a time when we all have a part to play in its recovery,” said Katherine Farley, Chair of Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts.

Exclusive: Timberman-Beverly Productions has partnered with filmmaker Tod Williams (The Door In the Floor) on a drama series focused on the rarely explored origin story of one of history’s most iconic figures, Napoleon Bonaparte. The project, which is being taken out to the streaming marketplace, hails from ABC Signature where Timberman-Beverly is under a deal.
Bonaparte’s rise to become the emperor of France is possibly the grandest epic driven by a single individual in all of human history, except it isn’t the story of an individual at all. It’s the story of a family, more specifically, a mother and her eight children, rising up from obscurity to become the most powerful dynasty in the world. Beautiful, unruly, intelligent, and competitive, but united as a pack of wolves when threatened. In this family, blood is thicker than everything.
The series will explore Napoleon the son, brother, and...

As long as there are Stephen King novels left to adapt, there will be streaming services and Oscar winners ready to answer the call. The latest such development is a new Apple series based on “Lisey’s Story,” the super-prolific author’s 2006 book. Julianne Moore is set to star in the series, which Variety reports is currently slated to be eight episodes long.
Moore will play the title character, a woman dealing with the loss of her husband. After years of grief, she begins to see his life and death in a completely new way after unexpected events. No additional casting news has been revealed as of yet.
After sparse previous appearances on TV — including a memorable handful of “30 Rock” episodes — this will be Moore’s first leading role on a series. She’s set to next appear on the big screen in Joe Wright’s upcoming film “The Woman in the Window...

★★★☆☆ John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson should make a thing of appearing in Stephen King adaptations together. This, their second rodeo, isn't in the same league as 2007's underrated 1408, but it gives the tired zombie survival horror subgenre a much-needed recharge and does more than enough to entertain as B-movie fun. The expression 'throwback' can be deployed for either positive or negative purposes, but here it's almost entirely positive. Tod Williams, a journeyman best known for Paranormal Activity 2, has managed to transfer King's very popular brand of horror with a good deal of success.

Stephen King’s vast archive of fiction continues to be a rich resource for Hollywood studios to mine. Cast one eye over the movie landscape and you’ll find that both The Dark Tower and It – arguably some of King’s finest work – are simmering in the works, not to mention Tod Williams’ rendition of lesser-known thriller Cell.
From one medium to another, Spike’s serialized take on The Mist – a gripping Stephen King novella – stands as one of the most intriguing properities on the network’s slate, and The Hollywood Reporter brings word of a final casting spree before production officially gets underway over the summer.
Among those that have been enlisted is Vikings actress Alyssa Sutherland, who has been set as Eve Cunningham, a “wife and mother who fights to protect her teenage daughter from unknown dangers lurking both inside and outside the mist while facing down her past.

Is Cell -- which hits limited theaters this weekend after debuting on VOD formats June 10 and suffering numerous release-date delays -- the worst Stephen King adaptation of all time? It’s impossible to definitively answer to that question! Still, based on the film’s bleak 0% Rotten Tomatoes score, it’s very possibly one of the worst, and given the competition, that's something. A couple of caveats: 1. Cell was presumably not screened for many (if any) critics, given the low number of reviews listed on Rotten Tomatoes (20 as of this writing). Films tend to benefit from a greater number of reviews given that they offer a broader spectrum of opinions, some of which are bound to be less discerning. 2. A Rotten Tomatoes score of 0% doesn’t mean a film was universally given ”F”/"zero star" reviews; it means that every review tabulated was “net negative.” A more accurate representation of the...

Give “Cell” points for narrative expediency. It wastes no time bringing about the complete collapse of Western Civilization. Over the elapsed time of a single phone call, graphic novelist Clay Riddell (John Cusack) watches the normal bustle of his surroundings at a Boston airport erupt in a full-scale brawl. The inciting incident isn’t an act of domestic terrorism, but a mysterious electronic pulse that turns all of the terminal’s cell phone users into unrepentant rage monsters. Because Clay was on a pay phone, he’s able to watch in horror as employees and passengers alike descend into a series of increasingly horrific, animalistic displays.
Despite the indiscriminate nature of these newly-birthed beasts (some are violent, some seem intent on self-harm, some seem content to convulse), the sight of innocent bystanders getting launched over escalator handrails and a member of the airport security detail ripping out the intestines of...

Happy Fourth of July ladies and gentlemen! It sounds odd in my head though, if I’m being honest. Does it actually feel like it’s already July folks? Just yesterday, I felt like the summer movie season was only beginning, but now we’re knee deep in it. So far, it hasn’t been a blockbuster season to remember, but maybe something this month will do it for everyone. As is always the case, some of the independent releases are putting the studio tentpoles to shame, but there are surprises on both sides to potentially look forward to before we hit August. Take a look below at what I think are the top releases this month, and remember as always…this is just my two cents on the matter. Here now are what I feel are the ten very best bets for July: 10. Remember that long-shelved adaptation of Stephen King’s Cell? It’s totally out now, available to rent on VOD. No marketing, no enthusiasm – all signs pointed towards an outdated, forgettable watch. Even the promotional poster on my television’s On-Demand screen was haplessly cobbled together, featuring Samuel L. Jackson’s shiny bald dome and clean-shaven face…even though he’s never seen in the film without a hat, or without facial hair. For all accounts and purposes, it seems like no one wants you to watch Cell, and after doing so myself, I’ll join that chorus of voices. There have been some phenomenal cinematic adaptations of Stephen King material – this is not one of them.
John Cusack stars as Clay Riddell, a graphic novelist who finds himself in a zombie-apocalypse situation caused by cell phone signals. You know, those devices glued to people’s hands and ears 99% of the time?...

Stephen King’s work is constantly adapted for the screen and it looks like critics would have preferred if his 2006 novel “Cell” hadn’t. Directed by Tod Williams and starring John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson, the film tells the story of Clay (Cusack), a man who witnesses a scene of chaotic mayhem when an electronic signal turns hundreds of cell phone users into rabid killers. Desperate to find his estranged wife and son, Clay teams with a train driver (Jackson) to battle the horde of murderous “phoners” as the city descends into apocalyptic madness.
Bob Grimm of CV Independent wrote that the movie “is easily one of the worst adaptations ever of a King story.” He also criticized the leads acting and the editing, “Cusack seems pissed to be in this thing, while Jackson is clearly bored and seems resigned to the fact that he signed up for a stinker. Eli Roth was originally slated to be the director, and he left due to creative differences. Maybe he was arguing that a film like this should be crazy and even funny. This film takes itself a little too seriously, and boasts some of the worst editing you are likely to see this year.”

Arts Bham’s Corey Craft gave it one and a half stars out of five describing the film as unimpressive. “There isn’t much of a satirical edge to this material, making it feel dull and heavy-handed; the humor is sparse and falls flat; and the horror mayhem, such as it is, is unimpressive compared to any number of basic cable horror TV shows” he writes. “And all this is even before the plot completely falls apart in the final 20 minutes.”
“The movie should have gone straight to voicemail instead,” says Consequence of Sound critic Nico Lang. Agreeing that the story is better read than seen, he says, “‘Cell’ isn’t nearly as luridly entertaining as it should be.”

Patrick Cooper of Bloody Disgusting agreed with Grimm that the actors and the film lacked enthusiasm, “You’d think ‘Cell’ would be an entertaining ride. It’s not. It’s gratuitously grim and gloomy, with no real message to drive this misery home.” Adding, “‘Cell’ closes out on a finale that will justifiably frustrate most. The story packs absolutely no punch and the solid stable of actors look bored for most of he film.”
“Cell” is available on demand and will see a limited Us release on July 8.

"If we're gunna survive, people are gunna die." Saban Films has released an official trailer for a film called Cell, starring John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson. This is an adaptation of the best-selling Stephen King novel of the same name, about an electronic signal sent to people's cell phones that turns them into "rabid killers". Another angry zombie movie, but this time it's our cell phones that have turned everyone into zombies, how apt. Despite the fact this is a Stephen King movie starring Cusack & Jackson, it doesn't actually look that good. Maybe I'm just tired of the everyone-turns-into-a-zombie movies. What about you? Here's the first trailer (+ poster) for Tod Williams's Cell, direct from YouTube: When a strange signal pulsates through all cell phone networks worldwide, it starts a murderous epidemic of epic proportions when users become bloodthirsty creatures, and a group of people in New England are...

In the past, Stephen King novel adaptations have been hit or miss, but things are looking good for the forthcoming feature film “Cell.”
Earlier today (April 26), Saban Films released the first trailer for the flick, starring John Cusack, Samuel L. Jackson and Isabelle Fuhrman, ahead of its July 8th theatrical opening.
Per the synopsis, “When a mysterious cell phone signal is broadcast across the network and turns the population into mindless animals, struggling graphic artist Clay Riddell bands together with a small group of fellow survivors to trek across a decimated New England to seek answers and reunite with his son.”
Of the movie, King told press, “I enjoyed working on ‘Cell’ and love the way it turned out. Kip Williams has made a scary and thoroughly entertaining movie. But you may want to put your cell phone in the freezer after seeing it.”...

Actors Samuel L. Jackson (1408) and John Cusack re-team for another Stephen King written film endeavour - Cell. Published as an apocalyptic novel in 2006, Cell has been completed by director Tod Williams (Paranormal Activity 2) and many others. Now, the film will be released this summer through Video-on-demand and in a few theatres, one month later. The film's first trailer shows dire scenarios as a virus spreads from cellphone to cellphone. The exciting trailer for Cell is hosted here. For more on the story, Cell focuses on Clay (Cusack). He witnesses a viral pandemic in a over-populated airport. Escaping to an underground railway, Clay is determined to return to his family. But, thousands of rabid, hive-minded killers stand in the way. This father and husband will have to find others in order to fight his way back to his family as the "phoners" home in on their position. Director Tod Williams is no stranger to horror.

This one’s been a long time coming. Stephen King is a genre unto himself at this point. A “Stephen King movie” can be anything from Stand By Me to Maximum Overdrive, and the only thing they all have in common is him as the original source of the material. It seems like a given at this point that if King publishes something, it will eventually be turned into a film. Some books just take longer than others to make the jump. For example, Hulu just wrapped up 11.22.63, the eight-part adaptation of King’s time-travel story about trying to stop the murder of JFK from taking place. Co-produced by Bad Robot and starring James Franco, that was not the first attempt at cracking that adaptation. Jonathan Demme was the first director to try to take a crack at that one, and he was going to do it as a feature film.

At long last the first trailer for the feature film adaptation of Stephen King's Cell has been released! I've been anxiously waiting for this movie since I first read the book and it's almost here. The movie stars John Cusack, Samuel L. Jackson, and Isabelle Fuhrman and it looks like a solid adaptation. King, who co-wrote the script for the movie, previously said:
“I enjoyed working on ‘Cell’ and love the way it turned out. Kip Williams has made a scary and thoroughly entertaining movie. But you may want to put your cell phone in the freezer after seeing it.”
Cusack and Jackson previously worked together on the big screen adaptation of 1408, which I really enjoyed. It looks like they were able to bring that same magic to bringing the story of Cell to life. Here's the synopsis:

I’ve been wondering what has been going on with the big screen adaption of Stephen King’s Cell. The film completed shooting last year with Samuel L. Jackson, John Cusack, and Isabelle Fuhrman and has since been looking for distribution.
Well, it finally found it. Saban Films has picked up the U.S. distribution rights to the film, which means it will be released eventually. Cell was directed by Tod “Kip” Williams (Paranormal Activity 2) from a script co-written by King and Adam Alleca (The Last House on the Left). If you’re not familiar with the story, here’s a brief synopsis:
When a powerful signal is broadcast across mobile networks worldwide, cell phone users’ minds are instantly and dangerously re-programmed. Heading north through New England in search of his wife and son, Clay Riddell (John Cusack) is joined by a group of survivors hoping to fend off the bloodthirsty and hyper-connected “phoners.

Starring John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson, the film adaptation of Stephen King’s Cell has been en route to the big screen for quite some time, but now that the movie has been acquired for Us distribution, it looks like viewers will finally get to see the story’s murderous cell phone users on-screen.

Based on King’s unflinchingly violent 2006 novel of the same name, Cell was directed by Paranormal Activity 2’s Tod Williams from an adapted screenplay by Stephen King and Adam Alleca (2009’s The Last House on the Left). The film re-teams Cusack and Jackson, who co-starred in another King adaptation, 1408. The cast also includes Isabelle Fuhrman, Owen Teague, and Stacy Keach. A release date has not yet been revealed.

Stephen King is a pretty busy guy lately. He recently produced the currently-airing adaptation of his loopy time-travel story 11.22.63 over on Hulu, while simultaneously helping to guide the long-awaited big screen adaptation of The Dark Tower into theaters (tentatively coming in January of 2017). There’s even that Revival movie coming down the line. On top of all that, it’s easy to forget that Cell — one of his more modern stories — is on the release slate for later this year.
Today, new images from the movie were shared online, focusing on the post-apocalyptic struggles of its lead character Clay Riddell (John Cusack) as he bands together with Tom McCourt (Samuel L. Jackson), Alice Maxwell (Isabelle Fuhrman), and Charles Ardai (Stacy Keach) as they all fight for survival against a zombie uprising. First off, my apologies if you've already seen these first images of John Cusack, Samuel L. Jackson and Isabelle Fuhrman from Stephen King's Cell. They actually made an appearance a couple months back, but we missed it somehow.
But here's the deal: I Loved this book. Stephen King's "The Cell" is not only a Stephen King book on par with his best, it is a very good zombie book and definitely worthy of a film adaptation. And since we've got a lot of readers interested in all things Pa, I figured we needed to share it widely.
So, better late than never I say.

Brad Pitt’s production company Plan B has optioned feature rights to The Jaunt, a 1981 Stephen King short story about a futuristic method of teleportation. Andy and Barbara Muschietti, the duo behind 2013 frightener Mama (he directed, she produced and both collaborated on the screenplay), have been tapped to develop, with Andy directing.
King’s story was first published in Twilight Zone Magazine but only garnered acclaim when it was included in the author’s 1985 short-story collection, Skeleton Crew. Set in the 24th century, the story revolves around ‘jaunting,’ a method of teleportation in which the individual is put under anesthesia during their travels, lest the process cause their mind to implode from experiencing time standing still. One father, preparing his family for a trip to Mars, recounts the controversial and chilling history of jaunting.

As a first teaser for those disastrous events, the image which accompanied the news is pretty standard fare. Cusack, Jackson and Fuhrman stand on a vandalized street,...

Get ready stateside filmgoers, because the “phoners” (aka “crazies”) are coming to the Us. Stephen King fans know that the master of macabre doesn’t like using cell phones. His 2006 novel, Cell, is a cautionary tale about what can go wrong by pressing portable phones to our ears and keeping them close at hand in our pockets, and its unflinching subject matter contains flocks of murderous lunatics that would be right at home in Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later, George A. Romero’s The Crazies, or Simon Clark’s Blood Crazy.
We knew this unique King novel was getting the adaptation treatment, with King co-writing the screenplay and John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson in the lead roles, but we’re now one big step closer to seeing it on the silver screen, as Clarius Entertainment has acquired the Us rights to the movie.
Slated to hit theaters this year,...

Coverage of ISAs (international sales agents) resumed for the American Film Market. This segment follows leaders, innovation and successful new startups in the world of international film sales and distribution.
The Beverly Hills based International Film Trust (Ift) was started in April 2013 by co-founders Michael Benaroya of Benaroya Pictures and Miscellaneous Entertainment principals D. Todd Shepherd and George Waud.
Since its inception at Cannes in 2013, Ift has acquired 12 films with another set for Berlin 2015. The first titles were successfully presold last year and have since been scheduled for theatrical release.
Ift President Christian De Gallegos brings a wealth of wisdom and experience from his background in the talent agencies and as a sales agent for Voltage Pictures, working on Oscar winners like “The Hurt Locker” and “Dallas Buyers Club”.
De Gallegos talks about the progress of this fairly new sales agency and shares some of Ift’s upcoming films:
How did Ift start?
Michael Benaroya had been an active producer and financier for years, outsourcing international sales to the leading independent companies. His slate was growing and international distribution remained crucial to his business model, so he knew that starting an international sales agency would be financially efficient and would give him a more thorough market awareness which is invaluable when packaging.
Mb: I worked with the top international distributors at Voltage who have thankfully supported Ift since day one and we’ve been lucky to partner with powerhouse companies like Sony, eOne and Universal who are currently scheduled to release half our slate, having come on board in pre-production.
The majority of our lineup to date has been within the Us$ 10 million dollar range, shot with soft money and internationally viable casts, keeping budgets to a reasonable level so presales without confirmed U.S. theatrical distribution are realistic. We comfortably retain production value which validates theatrical upside.
We’re excited to step up to the next level this year. We have two films in which we’re involved with financing and distribution: one at Us$ 33 million and another at Us$ 35 million.
What are some new projects that you’re excited about?
“You Shall Know Our Velocity”, based off Dave Eggers best-selling novel, will start shooting April 2015 with Daniel Radcliffe. Also, we have a film called “Cymbeline” with Dakota Johnson as the lead (from “Fifty Shades of Grey”), which premiered at Venice this year. Grindstone will theatrically release it in early 2015.
What do you look for when considering a film?
Interesting concepts and relevant topics with the right financing structure. I’ve been involved with the passion projects of A-list actors which can be exciting as they attract great ensembles, cameos, crew and their enthusiasm usually leads to a better movie.
How did you enter the business?
I started in the talent agency world, working at Paradigm in film, music and TV. The agencies are the epicenter of the entertainment industry; there you’re exposed to all sides of the business, so it was just a matter of time before I learned about international sales and figured it would suit me best. I found an opportunity at Voltage Pictures working as Nicolas Chartier’s assistant in 2007. After a few months he promoted me to sell on his behalf. I worked there for six years, sold about 100 movies and was lucky enough to be part of great films like “The Hurt Locker”, which won eight Oscars, “Don Jon”, and “Dallas Buyer’s Club”. The founders of Ift approached me early 2013 and I’ve been thrilled to be a part of our growing company ever since.
What do you love the most about your work?
I love deal making and the satisfaction it brings me, whether it’s a quick handshake or a challenging spin on a tough topic. I love the partnerships I’ve formed and friendships I’ve developed, with both clients and competitors. I love the markets but prefer visiting what is a very nice network of people on their home turf, traveling the world to see firsthand where our influence reaches.
