At the Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards on Feb. 24, Oscar frontrunner “Darkest Hour” won two of its three races: special makeup effects and best period/character makeup. It lost best period/character hairstyling to “I, Tonya.”
Among those films that “Darkest Hour” edged out for best special makeup effects was “Wonder,” one of its two Oscar rivals for Best Makeup & Hairstyling. That film contended on the contemporary side here and lost its bid for hairstyling to “Pitch Perfect 3″ and makeup to “Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2.” The third Oscar nominee, “Victoria and Abdul,” was snubbed by the guild.

We like to pretend they don’t mean anything, but at the end of the day, critics always find reason to pick holes in the annual Oscar results. Forrest Gump taking Best Picture, over Pulp Fiction? No way. Best Director for Robert Redford, not Scorsese? Insanity. Crash winning Best Picture, over Brokeback Mountain? Complete and utter bullshit.
Seemingly nothing bothers a critic more, however, than when the Academy gets it wrong on actors. One argument has for the last couple of years been that Leonardo DiCaprio should have won an Oscar a long time ago, perhaps for What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, or Catch Me If You Can, or The Wolf of Wall Street.

Leonardo DiCaprio didn't just walk away with a BAFTA Award earlier this month; he also stole the heart of Dame Maggie Smith. During a monologue from host Stephen Fry, a handful of celebrities were featured on a mock Kiss Cam; when the camera landed on Leo and Maggie, he adorably planted a sweet smooch on the 81-year-old Downton Abbey star's cheek. Surprised, the actress spun around in her seat to hug Leo and give him a quick message. Leo won the award for best actor for his performance in The Revenant and is on the fast track to nabbing his first Oscar as well. Check out Leo's supercute moment with Maggie Smith above now. Sure, sure, Jimmy Fallon and Jonah Hill pull an Oprah and give everybody in the audience a panda, but that's not the most important takeaway here. After watching this and seeing all the amazing Jonah faces that are possible, it should be seen as a travesty that the only Jonah Hill apps available in the App Store are the Get Him to the Greek and Superbad ones. Does this mean Jonah should fix that and think about making his very own Jonoji app? Probably. At least that way he (or you) could regularly share really expressive faces for really special scenarios. When your Bff Leo tells you to close your eyes and imagine how big the Academy Award for Best Actor is Irl, for example: Or when you rewatch that underrated bear bit you did with Channing Tatum at the Golden Globes: When someone says maybe Leo won't win that Oscar,...

Oscar-less actor and environmental activist Leonardo DiCaprio will do crazy things for his roles, including, but not limited to: Eating bison liver; sleeping in animal carcasses; and appearing in films directed by Baz Luhrmann. But one thing Leo won't do (well, one other thing) is direct his own movie. Speaking with Variety about the Hell that was The Revenant shoot, DiCaprio said: “I’ve been so blessed to work with some great filmmakers, that I’m probably cursed to probably ever work as a director myself,” DiCaprio, 41, said. “I don’t think I would be able to compare to what I’ve seen. There are so many things that come into play when you make a movie. I really don’t know how they do it. Tom Hardy has made a career playing intense roles, including this summer’s blockbuster Mad Max: Fury Road which has an outside shot at a best picture nomination, and this year is shaping up to continue that trend for the British actor.
With this month’s Legend, in which Hardy plays dual roles as identical twin gangsters Ronnie and Reggie Kray, and a role opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in last year’s best director winner Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s The Revenant this Christmas, Hardy may be looking at his first nomination from the Academy. That may not be an accomplishment the actor aspires too, however, as he described the Oscars to Entertainment Weekly last week, “It’s like putting a wig on a dog, or a tutu on a crocodile. It doesn’t look right, it’s not fair to the animal, and inevitably someone will get bitten and hurt.

What's more impressive than a 7-year-old playing the piano flawlessly? A 7-year-old playing the piano flawlessly while blindfolded.
On last night's episode of Britain's Got Talent (May 16), little Leo Bailey-Yang from Manchester fought for a spot in the next round of the competition by doing just that.
Leo may have won over the audience soon after he stepped on stage, but it was the judges' turn to be impressed as the schoolboy introduced the blindfold that would make his act unique.
As he started playing, it was clear the youngster definitely had talent and he removed his blindfold at the end of his act to applause and cheers from the entire auditorium.

Instead, it tells the extraordinary story of the 1976 Formula One season, dominated by the battle between dashing British playboy driver James Hunt (played by Chris "Thor" Hemsworth) and austere Austrian Niki Lauda (Daniel "Good Bye, Lenin!" Brühl). After a near-fatal crash at the Nürburgring, Lauda returned just six weeks later, his horrific scalp burns still bandaged and bleeding, to defend his world title. It's scripted by Peter Morgan, who's made a career out of dramatising real events in the likes of The Queen and Frost/Nixon.

Taipei, Taiwan -- Lights, camera, laughs.
Tens of millions of film fanatics are entering theaters around Asia during the long Lunar New Year holiday, but Hollywood can't count on them to boost the box office for its mostly serious Oscar nominees. Even with the Academy Awards buzz at a peak barely two weeks before the ceremony, patrons are opting for lighter fare.
"Viewers are mostly drawn to action films, films with special effects, comedies or easy-to-follow `popcorn' movies," said Ross Lee, a manager with Vieshow Cinemas, which owns one of Taiwan's largest theater chains. "In Taiwan the big hits are traditionally disaster films like "2012."
Lee and others say that with Chinese movie-goers using the New Year holiday to escape their daily grinds, they generally give the cold shoulder to weightier movies, like this year's leading nominee "Lincoln" or last year's best picture "The Artist."

I thought it only appropriate to begin this kind of article with one of the finest female performances given in the past twenty years. Charlize Theron’s interpretation of Aileen Wuornos in Patty Jenkins’ 2003 film Monster is nothing short of a masterclass of acting, highlighted in turn by a film that completely supports its protagonist and is ultimately defined by it. It is no surprise that the actress, aided by a sensational physical adaptation (with prosthetic makeup) to the role, took home the Oscar that year for Best Actress at the Academy Awards.
And so our discussion begins in light of the aforementioned example: are female directors better than their male counterparts at capturing the essence of a performance? A few days ago, I penned an article about my love for director Sidney Lumet, who specialized in creating and capturing some of cinema’s most legendary performances in his movies.

Leonardo DiCaprio kept a low profile in sunglasses and a baseball hat while taking a casual stroll with his dad, George, in La yesterday. Leo won over Blake’s heart with extravagant European excursions and luxurious dates at the start of their relationship, but now they seem more than content to enjoy the simple pleasures of two wheels. From Easter Bunny to cult leader and murderer -- it's quite a 180 turn for James Marsden.
The star, who took the lead in this weekend's family-friendly box office champion "Hop," has been cast as Charles Manson in the upcoming film "The Dead Circus." The film will take on the case of singer Bobby Fuller, whose death, though ruled a suicide, raised suspicion of foul play and potentially murder.
The story will focus on the allegations that Manson and his Manson Family were behind the murder.
Michael C. Hall will play one of Fuller's managers, while Melissa Leo takes on the role of a former Manson Family member. Hall, of course, is more than familiar with the serial killer genre as the star of Showtime's "Dexter." Leo won an Oscar for her role in "The Fighter" this year.
Marsden recently finished shooting "Nailed," a comedy co-starring Jake Gyllenhaal and directed by David O. Russell.

Just a couple of weeks after the Superbowl comes the Superbowl of movies, the Academy Awards otherwise known as "the Oscars." The Oscars (named after the statue given) is the most prestigious award in movies given out by members of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences which are a collection of people who make up the film industry (i.e. actors, directors, writers, execs, etc.). It acknowledges which films deserve recognition for the major elements that make a successful film: everything from makeup and art direction to the big award, Best Picture. Every year I make predictions and get most of the major ones right. So here is my list of Oscar predictions (feel free to use them in an Oscar pool).

My conversations with industry insiders and Academy members lead me to believe that Melissa Leo (“The Fighter”) remains the favorite to win the best supporting actress Academy Award, despite — or perhaps even because of — the recent brouhaha over her “Consider” advertisements. In terms of statistical analysis, though, one can find cause for both confidence and concern about her Oscar prospects…
Cause for Concern: The BAFTA-ampas Disconnect
British voters are believed to make up a sizable portion of the Academy, and BAFTA Award winners — which were announced after the Oscars prior to 2000, and have been announced before them since then — usually correspond with Oscar winners. Therefore, it is certainly noteworthy that BAFTA didn’t like Leo’s performance enough to even nominate her for its best supporting actress award, but did like the one given by Hailee Steinfeld (“True Grit“), her primary rival at the Oscars, enough to nominate her in its best actress category.

Melissa Leo arrives at the Golden Globes 2011 ceremony, hosted by Ricky Gervais. Leo won the Best Supporting Actress Award for her performance in David O. Russell's The Fighter, which also earned Christian Bale the Best Supporting Actor Golden Globe. Others in Fighter cast are Mark Wahlberg and Amy Adams. Leo's awards-season speeches have garnered about as much praise as her performance in The Fighter. A couple of other Melissa Leo movies in 2010 were Welcome to the Rileys, with Kristen Stewart and James Gandolfini, and Conviction, with Hilary Swank and Sam Rockwell. Melissa Leo will (probably) next be seen in Michael J. Narvaez's Lost Revolution. Photo: © HFPA. Click on the image to enlarge it.

Leonardo DiCaprio was in NYC yesterday grabbing lunch with friends in Soho. The notoriously photo-shy star seemed to be in a great mood, even stopping to pose for a few pictures with fans. He was fresh off a weekend in La, where he partied with Nicole Richie, Gwen Stefani, and more at Kate Hudson's star-studded Halloween bash. Leo won't be able to take in another Yankees game while on the East Coast since the season ended with the Giants' win last night, but he'll get his sport fix back home in California by watching the Lakers. He may have to break from his courtside seats, though, to get back to work, as he just landed a new role portraying a serial killer in an adaption of Erik Larson's novel The Devil in the White City.
