The classic tale of Hansel & Gretel has been brought to the screen a handful of times over the years, and now an upcoming stop motion animated film has attracted some A-list talent.
Variety reports that Ari Aster and Lars Knudsen have boarded the Hansel & Gretel movie as executive producers through their company Square Peg.
Chilean filmmakers Cristóbal León and Joaquín Cociña (The Hyperboreans) are directing. Variety notes, “The story is expected to twist the fairy tale into inimitable shapes.”
The duo co-directed the stop motion movie The Wolf House back in 2018, and they also worked in the animation department on Ari Aster’s most recent movie, Beau Is Afraid.
“It’s our very personal adaptation of the classic fairy tale, with the main difference that Hansel and Gretel are both boys in this version, at least at the beginning of the story,” Cristóbal León explained. In this telling, “the story itself gets lost,...

Yorgos Lanthimos can’t stop (won’t stop!) working with Oscar winner Emma Stone, casting the actress once again as leading lady for his next project “Bugonia.”
The drama will also star Jesse Plemons who, along with Stone, appears in Lanthimos’ forthcoming “Kinds of Kindness.” That three-chapter feature just premiered on Friday at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
“Bugonia” follows two conspiracy-obsessed young men who kidnap the high-powered CEO of a major company, convinced that she is an alien intent on destroying planet Earth. The script is from heat-seeking “Succession” and “The Menu” writer Will Tracy.
Focus Features has won domestic rights to distribute the project. Universal Pictures will roll out the film in global territories, save Korea where “Parasite” producer Cj Enm will release. The latter is financing the film with Fremantle. CAA Media Finance and WME Independent brokered the rights deal.
This package is loaded with pedigree.

“Eddington” starts production this week, with Aster writing, directing and producing alongside Lars Knudsen under their Square Peg banner. Two-time Academy Award nominee Darius Khondji is the director of photography.
“Eddington” marks the sixth collaboration between Square Peg and A24, which produced and distributed Aster’s previous three films — “Hereditary,” “Midsommar” and “Beau Is Afraid” — as well as “Dream Scenario” and the upcoming “Death of a Unicorn.”

We learned just yesterday that Yorgos Lanthimos (Poor Things) is on board to direct an English-language remake of 2003’s Korean genre-bender Save the Green Planet!, which has Ari Aster (Hereditary, Midsommar) attached to produce. Variety now reports this afternoon that Emma Stone (Poor Things) is in talks to reunite with Lanthimos on the film.
“Stone would most likely play a supporting role,” Variety notes in their report.
Emma Stone just secured an Oscar nomination for her performance in Lanthimos’ Poor Things, and they had previously worked together on The Favourite back in 2018.
Variety details, “Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe at Element Pictures will produce the movie alongside Ari Aster’s Square Peg and Cj Enm (previously named Cj Entertainment).”
Joon-hwan Jang wrote and directed the original movie.
In the film, “Byeong-gu believes Earth is on the verge of an alien invasion and that he’s the only one who can save it.

Update: As we predicted, Emma Stone will reunite with Yorgo Lanthimos for the film in a supporting role, Variety reports.
Following up Poor Things, Yorgos Lanthimos already has another film in the can with Poor Things“>Kind of Kindness, and now he’s already set his next feature. The 2003 original, directed by Joon-hwan Jang (who was originally attached to helm this new version), is a black comedy meets sci-fi thriller. Lanthimos’ version, based on a script by Will Tracy (Succession), will kick off production in U.K. and New York this summer, so we can expect a 2025 release, which would mark three consecutive features from the director in a row. Mma has been steadily catching up to boxing in terms of combat sport films. While there are plenty of action films that utilize the practice, boxing has been able to capitalize on more character dramas, especially since Rocky hit the scene (no pun intended). While there have been movies like Warrior and Bruised that have showcased mixed martial arts in dramatic films, the popular UFC brand has been geared more towards popcorn movies like Here Comes the Boom and the upcoming Road House remake. The producers of Hereditary are now set to make a UFC-based drama where two Mma fighters, who fight for their own reasons, find themselves on a collision course.
Variety reports that Lupita Nyong’o and Chloe Grace Moretz will star in Strawweight as UFC fighters. The synopsis is said to “follow the journeys of two fighters who find themselves competing against each other in the Octagon. One...

Jesse Eisenberg and Riley Keough are a couple like you’ve never seen (ecause they’re both Sasquatches). The Zellner brothers’ upcoming film “Sasquatch Sunset” follows a “year in the life of a singular family” of Sasquatch, per the official logline. Keough, Eisenberg, co-director Nathan Zellner, and Christophe Zajac-Denek make up the family of mythical creatures.
Helmed by directing duo David and Nathan Zellner and written by David Zellner, “Sasquatch Sunset” is an entirely wordless film, other than the grunts and groans of the titular creatures. The feature debuted at Sundance 2024 and will distributed by Bleecker Street this spring.
Actor and producer Eisenberg previously starred opposite David Zellner in Riley Stearns’ “The Art of Self-Defense,” which was produced by Nathan Zellner. Eisenberg said to Variety in August 2022 that the Zellner brothers are “brilliant directors that I’ve wanted to work with for a long time.”

Austin-based indie directors David and Nathan Zellner have spent more time thinking about Sasquatch than most filmmakers do musing about human beings. In 2011, they brought “Sasquatch Birth Journal 2” to the Sundance Film Festival, a four-minute faux nature documentary in which a hirsute creature can be seen giving birth to an equally furry infant. Thirteen years later, the siblings return with “Sasquatch Sunset,” a one-joke feature that leaves the amateur videographer gimmick behind, committing itself to tracking a year in the lives of a Sasquatch family of four — let’s call them Big Foot, Mama Foot, Tender Foot and Buster (the runt of the litter).
In case you were wondering, the joke is that the film exists at all … because who would finance, much less star in, an 88-minute portrait of these apocryphal brutes? The late-arriving punchline comes with the end credits, when the names Riley Keough and Jesse Eisenberg appear...

Exclusive. When the alternative book of film trivia is written, a page will be dedicated to the influence of Leonard Nimoy’s paranormal-themed late-’70s TV show In Search of… on director siblings. It was here that Albert and Allen Hughes first heard about Britain’s most notorious serial killer, Jack the Ripper, beginning an obsession with Victorian London that resulted in their 2001 horror-drama From Hell. And for David and Nathan Zellner, the cultural impact was very similar.
“We loved that show,” recalls David. “As kids, there wasn’t much out there, that we were exposed to, that covered those sorts of things. They’d cover the Loch Ness monster, everything. I remember one about plants, wondering if they were able to think and what kind of music they’d like to listen to. They got really obscure with some of the subjects, but we loved that show. We loved the vibe of it.

Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series spotlighting the year’s most talked-about scripts continues with Dream Scenario, A24’s surreal dark comedy from Norwegian filmmaker Kristoffer Borgli that plays off Nicolas Cage’s decades-long permeation of the imagination.

Emma Stone and Yorgos Lanthimos are planning to continue their creative partnership for a remake of the Korean film Save The Green Planet, according to reports.
It looks like Yorgos Lanthimos will be continuing his ongoing professional relationship with Emma Stone, extending it to five feature films in a row (not to mention a series of short films he made that also starred the actor). According to Hollywood scooper Daniel Richtman, Lanthimos has been targeted by Cj Entertainment to direct a remake of the South Korean film, Save The Green Planet. Stone is apparently in negotiations to star in the project.
According to World of Reel, the original film’s director, Jang Joon-hwan, was supposed to helm the English-language remake with Ari Aster and Lars Knudsen producing. The outlet stops short of confirming Richtman’s claims, instead placing this one under the category of rumour.

Palme d’Or winner ‘Anatomy Of A Fall’ opens in 160 cinemas.
Nia DaCosta’s The Marvels heads the new films in UK-Ireland cinemas this weekend, looking to boost the fortunes of the long-running superhero franchise.
The Marvels opens in 665 cinemas through Disney. This is slightly fewer than recent Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) titles Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 (708), Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania (680) and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (704); the last MCU film to open on fewer screens was Chloe Zhao’s Eternals in 2021 (646).
Running for 15 years and counting, the MCU is still the highest-grossing film franchise both in UK-Ireland and worldwide.

There are some fascinating names behind A24‘s dark comedy, Death of a Unicorne, beyond stars Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega. Not only is it produced by Ari Aster, but horror master John Carpenter will compose music for the film.
In Death of a Unicorne, “A father (Rudd) and daughter (Ortega) accidentally hit and kill a unicorn while en route to a weekend retreat, where his billionaire boss (Richard Grant) seeks to exploit the creature’s miraculous curative properties.”
The dark comedy marks writer/director Alex Scharfman’s directorial debut.
Award-winning filmmaker and composer John Carpenter (Halloween), Cody Carpenter and Daniel Davies will compose music for the film.
The dark comedy has fantasy elements baked into the plot, but with Aster and Carpenter involved, it feels like a safe bet that Death of a Unicorne might dip further into genre territory than first glance.

It’s that time year again—when one might, upon their daily neighborhood perambulation, casually stumble upon a man dressed in a blood-splattered full-body jumpsuit and think to themself, this is perfectly fine and normal. But that’s the Halloween season for you, when the ghosts and goblins and AMC-obsessed Nicole Kidmans are out in full force for their yearly Halloween rituals.
Aside from meticulously inserting razor blades into the apples we all intend to hand out to local children, everyone’s favorite part of the Halloween season is—of course—the excuse to binge-watch our favorite horror movies, from the silly-scary (Hocus Pocus), to the fun-scary (Trick R Treat), to the scary-scary (The Evil Dead) or the really scary-scary (any news channel). In fact, horror movies have long been an integral part of the indie film ecosystem—turning minuscule budgets into huge box office numbers and launching the...
