Those of us who grew up in the 90s remember the complete overtaking of pop culture that the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles experienced. Suddenly, every kid was saying Cowabunga and only wanted to eat pizza. Through the onslaught of Turtlesmania, a ton of merchandise was made. Toys, clothes, games, and, of course, movies.
The original live-action film came out in 1990 and was followed by two sequels quickly. While the first film was lauded by audiences, the second film began to show some cracks in the armor of the franchise. By the time the third film hit theaters in 1993, the fad had begun to wane. The third film made nowhere near the amount that the first film had brought in during its theatrical run and had cost more to make.

The 90s get a bad rap as far as horror movies go. Without the 90s we would have missed out on such films as Candyman, Scream, and the original It miniseries. Let’s be real, all of us of a certain generation hate clowns now because of that miniseries. Thanks a lot Tim Curry. One thing the 90s had going for it was the re-emergence of the slasher boom. In the 80s you couldn’t walk into a video store without being overwhelmed with slasher films. Everyone was trying to cash in on the goodwill that the 1978 Halloween movie had given us. When Christopher Nolan took over as the director of the Batman film franchise, he promised to ground the characters in a real-world to show how these super heroics would actually work. While that promise may not have ultimately come true, his Batman trilogy did put a great cinematic spin on the world of the Dark Knight. Two of Batman’s biggest foes in the Nolan universe were the Joker, played magnificently by Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight, and Bane, played by the great Tom Hardy in The Dark Knight Rises.
They both proved formidable foes for the caped crusader, but how would they stack up to each other? Each possesses unique skills that test different aspects of Batman, Joker with his intellect and unique way of getting under the skin of the Dark Knight, while Bane has a more fleshed out backstory and sheer brutality on his side. Whether...

One of director Kevin Smith’s most beloved – but also controversial – movies, Dogma, has seemingly vanished. The film, which remains his highest-grossing domestic release (by just a few hundred thousand dollars), was a considerable DVD hit back in the day, noted for its wildly un-pc commentary track where, amongst other things, Kevin Smith took aim at the film’s leading lady, Linda Fiorentino. It got a Blu-ray release, which is now out of print, but ever since then the film has been Mia, with it long unavailable on streaming, while old copies of the film cost a pretty penny if you can find them used. Wtf Happened?
In this episode of Wtf Happened to this Movie, we dig into all things Dogma. We explain how the film was a religious hot potato that the Disney-owned Miramax films refused to release theatrically, leading to the Weinstein Brothers, Harvey and Bob, buying back the rights themselves,...

When it comes to being the Dream Master, only one entity can wear the crown. Back in 1984, Wes Craven created the ultimate dream boogeyman with Freddy Krueger in A Nightmare On Elm Street. Freddy was revealed to be the bastard son of a hundred maniacs, who became a psychopathic child killer. When a technicality got him off scot-free, the parents of Elm Street came together to enact their own justice by burning him alive. Little did they know that he would return in their children’s dreams to get his revenge.
Vecna is rather new to the game, but was revealed on the latest season of Stranger Things to be the puppet master behind all of Hawkins’s misery over the course of the show. He started out as a young child with incredible psychic abilities. When he decided to straight up murder his whole family with this newfound power,...

Pop quiz – what’s the most obscure Tom Cruise movie? If you’re thinking Lions for Lambs or maybe Far and Away, or even my beloved All the Right Moves, you’re wrong. Tom Cruise’s most obscure movie ever is, without a doubt, 1983’s Losin’ It. One of four films Cruise made in 1983, this had the misfortune of being released just a few months before Cruise’s career took off. It only made just over 1 million at the box office but would have easily made many more times that had it been held just a few more months, with Cruise becoming a household name by the end of that summer.
So why is Losin’ It so obscure? It’s a strange addition to Cruise’s filmography in that it’s a wacky sex comedy that has more in common with Porky’s than it does the classy Risky Business.

Let’s settle this debate once and for all; despite what anyone says, 1988’s Die Hard is most definitely a Christmas movie. It may be the greatest Christmas movie ever, although there are more challengers to the throne than you may think. One of the eighties’ other most influential action movies, Lethal Weapon, which came a year before Die Hard in 1987, is itself one heck of a good Christmas movie. Like Die Hard, no one thought of it as a Christmas movie when it first came out. Die Hard was a summer movie, while Lethal Weapon came out in March. Yet, over the years, it became a yuletide favorite, and indeed it has some rich Christmas themes, such as the importance of family, second chances, redemption and more.
Of course, both movies also happen to be among the best action flicks of their respective eras, so in this episode of JoBlo Face-Off,...

Nowadays, it seems that superhero movies are being released faster than you can say “Holy… whatever Batman!” It’s hard to believe that superheroes weren’t a big deal back in the ‘80s. Richard Donner’s Superman made people believe a man could fly, but it didn’t exactly set off an explosion of superhero fever that we’re feeling now.
After Supes, the next big hero to tackle the cinemas came in 1989 with Tim Burton’s Batman starring Michael Keaton in the titular role. Batman was a certified success with audiences, complete with its own hit album written and performed by the legendary Prince. Of course, that meant that a follow-up was inevitably going to happen. After proving such a big box office draw, Warner Brothers gave Burton the green light to do anything he wanted. What he turned in was 1992’s Batman Returns. A worthy sequel that brought...

When the weather gets cold, the wind nips at your nose, and it’s starting to feel festive, you know it’s Christmas time. But not only do the usual slew of films come out, but that means for us horror heads, it’s time to watch some holiday carnage! And, while Christmas is over and done with for the year, holiday horror movies are good for a festive watch any time of the year! The original Black Christmas is a horror holiday season staple, but what about the remakes?
2006’s Black Christmas loosely continued the demented story of the psychopath killer, Billy, slaying a bunch of sorority girls. 2019’s Black Christmas eschewed this slasher storyline, and instead, went in a different direction with a supernatural patriarchal cult. Both have their own twisted version of holiday cheer, but which one should be thrown out with the fruitcake? Let’s grab...

If you’re a hardcore Quentin Tarantino fan, you’ll know that Michael Madsen’s sadistic Vic Vega in Reservoir Dogs and John Travolta’s Vincent Vega in Pulp Fiction are brothers. Despite both characters dying in their respective films, Quentin Tarantino toyed with the idea of spinning the characters off into a prequel movie for many years. Eventually, Travolta and Madsen likely aged out of the idea, given that they would have had to convincingly play younger than they did in Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction. Still, the notion of a Vega Brothers movie is interesting.

Back in the ‘80s, if you were a kid, nothing seemed cooler than being part of a rag-tag group of youngsters that fought monsters. Fast forward to today, if you’re an adult, nothing seems cooler than being in the ‘80s and part of a gang that fights monsters. Some things just never change! The Duffer Brothers, who created Stranger Things, knew that when they launched the highly popular series on Netflix about the supernatural events in the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana. But in reality, they were just trading in on some of that decade’s nostalgia with inspiration from movies like E.T., Poltergeist, Ghostbusters, and The Goonies produced.
Yeah, if we’re talking ‘80s movies about rambunctious kids battling scary monsters, then we can’t forget to mention The Monster Squad. Directed by Fred Dekker and co-written by Shane Black, the story follows a kick-ass group of pre-teens...

The power of a wish is an extraordinary thing. For some, it will push them to achieve greatness in their work or their personal life. For others, it’s your heart’s desire being fulfilled at long last. And for these two supernatural beings, wishes can be the ultimate weapon.
First up, this bad dude shows us that evil can come in small packages. He’s Irish every day of the year, but the Leprechaun is not someone you want to stumble across on St. Patrick’s Day. He has a penchant for hoarding his gold and woe be anyone that thinks about taking it. If you go after his gold, he’ll bust out his lucky charms to make you regret it in all sorts of ways. Jennifer Aniston was able to escape his grasp and acquire quite a bit of gold herself, but not many others can say the same.

Better Off Dead is one of two 1985 movies that marked John Cusack’s debut as a leading man. After small roles in Sixteen Candles and Class, Cusack, at only eighteen, nabbed the lead in Rob Reiner’s The Sure Thing, and Savage Steve Holland’s Better Off Dead followed immediately afterward. While Cusack has often praised The Sure Thing and Reiner’s direction, his feelings on Better Off Dead have always been controversial. Holland says that while Cusack attended the dailies, when he saw the cut-together version, he felt humiliated and told him that he would never trust him again as a director. This was problematic as they were in the middle of shooting a follow-up, One Crazy Summer, whose shoot would be more fraught than the collegial Better Off Dead.
So what made Cusack so angry? Better Off Dead is an absurdist comedy that, among other things, includes a...

As much as people complain today about Hollywood remaking their favorite movies, back in the ‘80s, it was all the rage! And it actually improved some old movies with cool concepts. In 1982, director John Carpenter took a famous Howard Hawks creature feature and transformed it into a paranoia-inducing, psychological monster movie with some of the best special effects that hold up to this very day with The Thing starring Kurt Russell. The titular Thing is able to duplicate any living organism to give itself the best chance of taking everything over. Every single cell of this being is dangerous. It could be any one of us. Yes, even you!
In 1988, Chuck Russell and Frank Darabont reintroduced us to the ultimate eating machine. No, not Jaws! He brought back the gelatinous force of The Blob. It doesn’t matter how strong you are, how tough you are, or how great your mullet is,...

If there is one thing that the ‘80s taught us, it was to keep an eye out for small carnivorous creatures. Whether it was the Ghoulies, the Munchies (bonus points to those that remember them), or even Hobgoblins which you might have caught on Mystery Science Theater 3000. These little buggers had no problem taking a bite out of anyone that was unlucky enough to cross paths with them. However, the two biggest monsters of the bunch that ruled the decade with their unending appetite had to be Gremlins and Critters.
The Gremlins start off as cute little Mogwais. But as soon as you get them wet, they multiply. Then if they eat after midnight, they mutate into horrible green Gremlins. Before you know it, they will take over your town while wreaking as much havoc as possible. If you’re more worried about vicious fuzzballs from outer space, then Critters has you covered.

If you were a kid in the eighties, you wanted to be part of The Monster Squad. While a box office dud that made under 4 million dollars at the box office, once this tween classic hit HBO and VHS, its cult status grew. Directed by Fred Dekker (Night of the Creeps), who co-wrote with the legendary Shane Black, The Monster Squad revolves around a group of horror-obsessed boys who come face to face with a gaggle of classic monsters, led by the evil Count Dracula (Duncan Regehr). Now they have to battle Dracula, The Mummy, the Gil-Man and the Wolfman while getting help from a descendent of Van Helsing and the surprisingly gentle Frankenstein’s monster (Tom Noonan – in a performance that tugs at the heartstrings).

Ok, so technically, we’re cheating a bit as the Batgirl movie starring Leslie Grace isn’t technically “unmade.” In fact, the movie was pretty close to complete, with only the VFX and score needed, although reshoots and more were scheduled before the film could have been ever really called complete. Yet, Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah’s movie was scrapped and in this episode of Wtf Happened to this Unmade Movie; we try to give our audience an idea of…well…Wtf happened, along with a look at different versions of the movie that could have gotten made in the past.
Indeed, at one time, there were plans to spin Batman and Robin’s Batgirl, Alicia Silverstone, into her own film, which fell apart after that movie’s disastrous reception. There was also a Joss Whedon version of the property, which came pretty close to happening, but in the end,...

We are now officially in Halloween season, and that means it’s time to start revisiting entries in the Halloween movie franchise. With today’s new episode of the Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? video series, we’re looking into the making of one of the more divisive Halloween sequels, 1989’s Halloween 5 (get it Here). Why did this one turn out the way it did? Find out by watching the video embedded above!
Directed by Dominique Othenin-Girard from a screenplay he crafted with Michael Jacobs and Shem Bitterman, Halloween 5 has the following synopsis:
After lying in a coma for a year, Michael Myers awakens and stalks his way back to his small hometown in Illinois, intent on killing his niece, Jamie, who has been confined to a mental institution since Michael’s last attempt to slay her. Suspecting a psychic link between Michael and Jamie, psychiatrist Dr.

Zack Snyder’s Watchman was relatively well-received by fans and overall was a box office success. Devoted to making a faithful adaptation of the Alan Moore/ Dave Gibbons graphic novel, the fact that Snyder’s Watchmen film got made on the scale it did is a miracle. However, several other versions of Watchmen were in the works before Snyder got involved, with several coming close to being made. In this episode of Wtf Happened to this Unmade Movie, we dig into versions that almost got made involving folks such as Terry Gilliam, David Hayter (who filmed a demo reel with Ray Stevenson and Rorschach and Iain Glen as Nite Owl), Darren Aronofsky and Paul Greengrass. Suppose any of these versions had gotten made. In that case, we might have gotten someone like Paddy Considine as Rorschach, Joaquin Phoenix as Nite Owl, and possibly even Tom Cruise as Ozymandias (in which...

They are the two biggest threats to the galaxy. First up, the Jedi Knight formerly known as Anakin Skywalker — Darth Vader. When the Galactic Empire took hold, many began to quiver at his very name. He brought an iron fist down on those that refused to align themselves with the Empire and earned a dangerous reputation because of it. If you were unlucky enough to be an Admiral aboard his ship, you could easily find yourself choked out of a job… and your life.
In the other corner, there’s the shadowy figure behind the entire Empire. Emperor Palpatine was able to leverage the Republic into giving him complete control over the Galactic Senate to fight the Empire. They had no idea at the time that he was in charge of both. He was able to grasp ultimate power and wouldn’t let go of it, even after death. He...

While Marvel fans got an incredible send-off for Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine in James Mangold’s Logan, another Wolverine movie was planned a few years earlier that would’ve taken the character in an edgier direction. Indeed, Darren Aronofsky was all set to reunite with his The Fountain star Hugh Jackman for the second spin-off sequel for the character, The Wolverine. In the end, Aronofsky left the project, with James Mangold taking over. While the finished film wasn’t particularly well-loved by fans, it did pave the way for Logan, with Mangold arguably taking the franchise into an even darker direction than Aronofsky would have. In this episode of Wtf Happened to this Unmade Movie, we look at Aronofsky’s unmade Wolverine movie and try to figure out precisely what it might have been like.

It’s time for a new episode of our Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? video series, and in this one we’re looking back at the 1992 mess that’s known as House IV (get it Here). Unlike the previous sequels in the anthological House franchise, this one is a direct follow-up to the original House… but it’s one that left many fans wishing the filmmakers had just left House alone. To find out why, check out the video embedded above.
Directed by Lewis Abernathy from a screenplay by Geof Miller and Deirdre Higgins (with R.J. Robertson and Jim Wynorski receiving story credit), House IV – which is also known as House IV: The Repossession and House IV: Home Deadly Home – has the following synopsis:
After Roger Cobb is killed in a car accident, his wife and young daughter move into an old house haunted by a Native American curse.

We've all got our demons and fears, and the dark has always been a big one for many people... at least that's what I hear. Filmmaker Bryan Wolford taps right into that vein with his new film Myctophobia. Check out the teaser, and leave the lights on.
Myctophobia was shot over Feburary 25 and 26 and stars Kitsie Duncan, Steve Christopher, and Eric Shellito. It will be part of The Collective Volume 4, which brings together filmmakers to create ten 10-minute short films with a theme and will combine them. The project will premiere at this year's Days of the Dead in Indianapolis on July 7th.
"This collection's theme is emotions, and the emotion I was given was fear. I came up with Myctophobia after looking through a list of phobias and settled on this one due to the wording of 'the fear of darkness,'" Wolford said. "I thought the way it...
