For years video games have clamuored to make the gaming experience more cinematic. Which is now the reason we have games like Heavy Rain, Beyond: Two Souls, The Last of Us, and Until Dawn – games that edge more towards the “interactive adventures” we were promised back in the full-motion video era of gaming (remember that?). But what if it was the other way round? What if films looked to video games for inspiration? Undoubtedly we’d have more movies like Hardcore Henry.
Shot completely from the hero’s perspective, a la Fps video games, Hardcore Henry stars you – the audience. You remember nothing. Mainly because you’ve just been brought back from the dead by your wife (Haley Bennett). She tells you that your name is Henry.

Hardcore Henry promises to be a new way for how audiences experience a movie since it is a first-person shooter film production. The story is entirely depicted from the hero’s point of view. The feeling that I got when I first saw the official trailer was that I am playing a video game. I have to admit, it is an interesting experiment and hopefully it won’t be a huge disappointment at the end.
Now Stx Entertainment has revealed a brand new TV spot for the action thriller (via ComingSoon), which consists mainly of flattering critical quotes and a few previously-unseen shots.

It’s hard to believe that another South by Southwest Film Festival is almost upon us, and this year’s lineup is yet another stellar collection of indie films, shorts, documentaries and experiential projects from all over the world. As we prepare to bring our readers extensive coverage over the next week from Austin, here’s a look at the 11 genre-related films and TV shows we’re excited to check out during the festival, which begins on Friday, March 11th.
[Writer’s Note: During Sundance 2016, this writer had the privilege of covering two great genre films: Under the Shadow from Babak Anvari and Mickey Keating’s Carnage Park. Since I had the chance to catch both of these films back in January, I decided it wouldn’t be fair to include them here in my preview piece (however, genre fans attending SXSW should definitely check out both films during the fest, as they are equally incredible).]
In a Valley of Violence (Director/Screenwriter: Ti West)
Festival Synopsis: From Blumhouse, the film tells the story of a drifter named Paul who arrives in a small town, seeking revenge on the thugs who murdered his friend. Sisters Mary Anne and Ellen, who run the town’s hotel, help Paul in his quest for vengeance. Cast: Ethan Hawke, Taissa Farmiga, James Ransone, Karen Gillan, John Travolta (World Premiere)

This year brings a number of major-budget action features, each attempting to one-up their predecessors in order to get audiences in theaters. However, before the summer blockbuster season kicks off we’ll get one that seems most aligned to the video-game experience. Ilya Naishuller‘s Hardcore follows a cybernetic super-soldier who kicks, punches and parkours his way across Russia to save his wife from a psychotic paramilitary psychic bent on world domination. And it’s entirely in first-person point-of-view. Produced by Timur Bekmambetov and starring Sharlto Copley, Danila Kozlovsky, Haley Bennet, Andrey Dementiev, Dasha Charusha, and Sveta Ustinova, a new trailer has now landed.

Synopsis: "Strap in. Hardcore Henry is one of the most unflinchingly original wild-rides to hit the big screen in a long time: You remember nothing. Mainly because you’ve just been brought back from the dead by your wife (Haley Bennett). She tells you that your name is Henry. Five minutes later, you are being shot at, your wife has been kidnapped, and you should probably go get her back. Who’s got her? His name’s Akan (Danila Kozlovsky); he’s a powerful warlord with an army of mercenaries, and a plan for world domination. You’re also in an unfamiliar city of Moscow, and everyone wants you dead. Everyone except for a mysterious British fellow called Jimmy (Sharlto Copley.

"Hello Henry... Remember how you got here?" Holy moley! Get ready for this. The first official trailer has debuted for the "Biting Elbows" feature - Ilya Naishuller's Hardcore, which is playing at Tiff in Midnight Madness this month. Hardcore is the first action film to be shot 100% from "the hero's perspective", the feature version of that awesome Pov short that everyone saw a few years ago plus others like Insane Office Escape. This looks crazy, with some weird sci-fi cyborg elements and a huge, complex story. Naishuller also rounded up one helluva cast: Sharlto Copley, Danila Kozlovsky, Haley Bennet, Andrey Dementiev, Dasha Charusha, and Sveta Ustinova. This trailer is very violent and Nsfw - beware. Fire it up below! Here's the first official (Tiff) trailer for Ilya Naishuller's Hardcore, from YouTube (via The Film Stage): And here's a few of the tweets and reactions from the Midnight Madness...
