Martin Scorsese is set to both host and produce a new religious documentary series for Fox Nation. Titled Martin Scorsese Presents: The Saints, the eight-part series will chronicle the lives of (you guessed it) eight different saints and will debut on November 16th.
Martin Scorsese Presents: The Saints will cover the stories of figures like Joan of Arc and John the Baptists through re-enactments and on-camera discussions between Scorsese and historical experts. Created by Matti Leshem, the show features direction from Elizabeth Chomko and writing by Kent Jones. With the announcement, Scorsese joins the likes of Kevin Costner, Rob Lowe, and Dan Aykroyd, who have all fronted projects for the Fox News-run streaming service in recent years.

The success of "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer" this summer was a sign that the box office has more or less fully recovered from the decimation of the Covid-19 pandemic. Unfortunately, Hollywood's studios have decided to celebrate this victory by strapping themselves to a rocket like Wile E. Coyote and firing themselves directly into another crisis. The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers' back-to-back failure to negotiate new deals with the Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA means that Hollywood has been almost completely shut down by a dual actors and writers strike, something it hasn't faced for more than 60 years.
Since the actors strike means movie stars can't promote their work or even walk the red carpet at premieres, studios are already feeling the pain at the box office. Rather than return to the negotiating table with SAG-AFTRA, however, the favored solution has been to delay upcoming movies from their...

Exclusive: Lionsgate is pushing the theatrical releases of this August’s White Bird: A Wonder Story and next year’s Dirty Dancing sequel from director Jonathan Levine due to the dual WGA and SAG-AFTRA strike, we hear.
White Bird, the spin-off prequel to the studio’s 2017 box office smash Wonder, was set to launch limited on Aug. 18 and go wider on Aug. 25. It’s now undated for Q4 at the end of this year. That leaves the last weekend in August without a wide theatrical release, which isn’t that unusual for that point in summer. White Bird stars Helen Mirren and Gillian Anderson, and it’s the type of movie that really needs the push from its actors to raise it above the fray. Now it’s in the Oscar season corridor, which is a better spot than the dog days of August. Best to wait the strike out.

Lionsgate announced this afternoon that their Dirty Dancing sequel starring Jennifer Grey will hit theaters on Feb. 9, 2024.
Deadline first reported about the project, which Jonathan Levine is directing off a screenplay by Elizabeth Chomko, Jonathan Levine, Mikki Daughtry, Tobias Iaconis. In part 2, Baby (Grey) takes us back to Kellerman’s Resort for a story of summer, young romance, and dancing. That weekend is the pre-Valentine’s Day weekend and right now Universal has an untitled animation film on the calendar.
In addition, Lionsgate’s feature take of Judy Blume’s 1970 novel Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret will now open April 28, 2023 instead of Sept. 16 this year. Universal recently moved DreamWorks’ Distant off that date to Jan. 27, 2023. While I hear Lionsgate likes the new pre-summer date for the Judy Blume movie, I’m wondering now if New Line’s feature take of Stephen King’s Salem’s Lot in the previous Sept.

Baby is coming back. More than three decades after its original release, "Dirty Dancing" is getting a sequel. Lionsgate first teased the news during its CinemaCon presentation on April 28, which featured footage from the film and a narrator saying, "Jennifer Grey returns to Kellerman's in the next chapter."
Filmmaker Jonathan Levine of "Warm Bodies" and "Long Shot" will direct the sequel, which he has cowritten with Elizabeth Chomko. In an interview with Deadline, Levine revealed that the film has not yet been cast, though this time, Baby's story will intermingle with another plot that centers around a young woman spending the summer at the Kellerman's resort. The team apparently is in the process of narrowing down candidates to play that role.
Levine disclosed that the movie will feature several tracks from the first film, including the song "Hungry Eyes." It reportedly will also include '90s hip-hop and may feature...

The long-rumored sequel to 1987’s “Dirty Dancing” has a director and a release date, Lionsgate announced on Monday.
Filmmaker Jonathan Levine will direct “Dirty Dancing,” which he co-wrote with Elizabeth Chomko. The film, which Lionsgate teased during CinemaCon this year, brings Jennifer Grey back to the franchise as Frances “Baby” Houseman, her character from the original blockbuster.
Speaking to Deadline, Levine suggested that Grey may not be the only actor from the first film to reprise their role in his sequel. “We are about to talk to people and are exploring that,” he said.
“The most important thing for us was having Jennifer on board. She is an invaluable collaborator. We’re going to try to involve as many people from the original as is appropriate. We want to be respectful in every way,” he added.
According to Levine, the new film will also reference Swayze’s character, Johnny. “This...

It’s been 35 years since somebody put Baby (Jennifer Grey) in the corner, and audiences no doubt have “Hungry Eyes” for a sequel.
Ahead of this year’s Cannes market, “Long Shot” and “50/50” director Jonathan Levine confirmed he will be directing the “Dirty Dancing” sequel for Lionsgate.
Original lead star Grey will reprise her role of Frances “Baby” Houseman as she returns to family camp Kellerman’s in the 1990s, as Deadline reported. Similar to the 1987 iconic film, the upcoming “Dirty Dancing” installment will focus on a coming-of-age romance, but Baby’s personal story will intertwine for a multi-layered (and multi-generational) narrative.
Director Levine co-wrote the sequel, which is also titled “Dirty Dancing,” with Elizabeth Chomko. Casting is reportedly underway with production slated for later this year; the film is eying a 2024 release date. Grey may also be joined by fellow original cast members, as Levine told Deadline that...

Jonathan Levine, the filmmaker behind the comedy “Long Shot’ and tear-jerker “50/50,” is taking his talents to the Catskills.
He’s been hired by Lionsgate to direct a sequel to 1987’s “Dirty Dancing,” with Jennifer Grey set to reprise her classic role as Frances “Baby” Houseman. No word as to whether she’ll be in a corner.
Prior to finding himself in the director’s chair, Levine was already attached to the project as a producer. He also co-wrote the screenplay with Elizabeth Chomko. The follow-up film, also titled “Dirty Dancing,” is expected to go into production later this year for release in 2024. International sales will launch later this month in Cannes.
Lionsgate announced back in 2020 that another “Dirty Dancing” story was in the works. Little is known about the next chapter, but Levine has hinted the sequel will include music from the original movie, as well as ’90s hip-hop.

Jonathan Levine, the director of “Warm Bodies” and “Long Shot,” has been tapped by Lionsgate to direct the follow-up film to the 1987 classic “Dirty Dancing” that will see Jennifer Grey reprise her original role as Frances “Baby” Houseman.

Levine also co-wrote the sequel screenplay with Elizabeth Chomko, and while the studio did not unveil specific plot details, he gave an interview to Deadline in which he explained that the film is now set in the 1990s and the world of hip hop and other artists like Alanis Morissette and Liz Phair. Blythe Danner plays a woman with dementia whose husband and children must decide whether it’s time for her to move into a care home
A tissue remained resolutely wedged up my sleeve for the duration of this well-acted, scrupulously polite American indie about a family coping with Alzheimer’s, which has met with ecstatic reviews, but left me a little cold. What We Had is the writing-directing debut of actor Elizabeth Chomko, with Hilary Swank and Michael Shannon as siblings trying to persuade their dad that after a long, happy marriage it’s time for their mum to be moved into care home – or “memory centre” as the glossy brochure grimly puts it.

On the road to making her feature debut with What They Had, Elizabeth Chomko faced two crises. On one hand, there was the existentential—the potency of loss, and the inevitability of decline, experienced firsthand. On the other, a crisis of identity, in her work as an artist.
A Bleecker Street release starring Hilary Swank, Michael Shannon, Robert Forster, Blythe Danner and Taissa Farmiga, the drama could hardly be more personal. Out of five acclaimed actors, it forged a family, a version of the director’s own. As dysfunctional as it is loving, this is a family that threatens to fall apart, as its matriarch succumbs to Alzheimer’s disease.
Writing from her personal experiences, Chomko meditated on memory, and what it means to lose it. Guiding the pedigreed Danner through a “challenging” and “scary” part, she found the entire filmmaking process to be one of letting go—of a person,...

Producer Sounwave is used to “throwing paint on the wall” when he works with Kendrick Lamar. However, both he and Lamar were presented with an immense challenge and opportunity when they were asked to write original songs for Ryan Coogler’s “Black Panther.”

Once again, the Golden Globes have an all-male line-up of best director nominees.
The nominees, announced Thursday morning, are Bradley Cooper (“A Star Is Born”), Alfonso Cuaron (“Roma”), Peter Farrelly (“Green Book”), Spike Lee (“BlacKkKlansman”), and Adam McKay (“Vice”). This comes after Natalie Portman called out the absence of female directors at 2017’s Globes nominations announcement.
“And now, here are the all male nominees,” Portman quipped before announcing the list.
There were a number of women directors that prognosticators thought might be nominated, including Karyn Kusama (“Destroyer”), Marielle Heller (“Can You Ever Forgive Me?”), Tamara Jenkins (“Private Life”), Josie Rourke (“Mary Queen of Scots”), Lynne Ramsay (“You Were Never Really Here”), and Elizabeth Chomko (“What They Had”).

There’s a big conversation happening about diversity and gender equality in film and the Whistler Film Festival is helping to fan the flames.
The fest, which runs Nov. 28 to Dec. 2, launched its Women on Top series a couple of years ago, when about 100 women ascended the top of the Whistler mountain to have breakfast with Canada Media Fund’s president & CEO Valerie Creighton.
Last year’s guest was Susan Cartsonis, film producer and co-founder of Resonate Entertainment. The goal was to bring inspiring women to speak about issues relating to representation.
“We need to create content that reflects society and includes a gender and diversity pass from script to screen to production,” says the festival’s executive director Shauna Hardy Mishaw. “If we want to change the story, it has to start with the story. Women deserve to work in a safe and equitable environment, and we need to...

“Aquaman” writer David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick is looking forward to the superhero movie’s opening because of his three children.
“This is my first movie that my kids can watch and I want to take them,” he said at Wednesday night’s “Behind the Screen” event, held by the Writers Guild of America West at Beauty & Essex in Hollywood.
“They’re dying to see ‘The Conjuring 2,’ but they’re also eight, nine, and 10, so that’s not happening,” he said.
Johnson-McGoldrick co-wrote the “Aquaman” script with Will Beall from a story by Beall, Geoff Johns, and James Wan, who directed “Aquaman” and both “Conjuring” movies. He has every confidence in “Aquaman,” which he began working on three years ago and recalls reading “Aquaman” comic books while on the set of “The Conjuring 2.”

This year, Variety will honor its 10 Actors to Watch with the Newport Beach Film Festival at a brunch taking place on Nov. 11 at the Resort at Pelican Hill. Nbff will also present honors to several artists, including the Icon Award to Robert Forster (now on screens in “What They Had”) and Artist of Distinction Awards to Topher Grace (“BlacKkKlansman”), Colman Domingo and Mary Elizabeth Winstead (“All About Nina”).
Variety has been bestowing 10 Actors to Watch honors since 1998. Past honorees include many future Oscar winners and nominees, such as Mahershala Ali, Timothée Chalamet, Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer, Brie Larson and Lupita Nyong’o.
Icon Award
Robert Forster
Being honored with an Icon Award is great, but Forster has a lot left in the tank. “I don’t know what an icon is,” Forster says. “And I don’t feel like one, and I certainly don’t feel like I’m 77, either!

At today’s Contenders La, here’s what they said about What They Had, Bleecker Street’s family drama from first time writer/director Elizabeth Chomko.
“It was something that I wrote for my family,” said Chomko, appearing on a panel with stars Hilary Swank and Robert Forster. “It’s about the things that happened during my grandmother’s Alzheimer’s disease…a place of grief and time traveling.”
Chomko said she wrote the first draft seven years ago, and joked that was followed with 40 rewrites before the story became a film starring Swank as Bridget, who returns home to Chicago at the urging of her brother (Michael Shannon) to engage in an emotional battle with her father (Forster) over who is best to make decisions for her ailing mother, portrayed by Blythe Danner.
Moderator Pete Hammond asked about the humor Chomko infuses into a tragic story. “I grew up...

A new release from a Nineties kingpin, a nod to the traditional from a rising star and some retro-pop from a Lumineer make up the songs you need to hear this week.
Joe Diffie, “Quit You”
Joe Diffie has fallen off the love wagon, unable to resist the pull of an addictive relationship. “I can crush it out, pour it down the drain, give up my vices, curse your name,” he sings, rattling off a number of defenses that, in the end, can’t convince him to quit the one he loves.

“It was a personal story that I felt compelled to write,” reveals Elizabeth Chomko about “What They Had,” which is her feature film debut as a writer and director. This story about a family coming to grips with an ailing matriarch (Blythe Danner) was inspired by Chomko’s own experiences with her grandmother, who died from Alzheimer’s disease after a 17-year battle. “It came from a place of grief and not wanting to let go of things, people and places that I wasn’t ready to let go of.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Chomko above.
