Horror is, without question, still the backbone of cinema, even as cinema struggles in these uncertain times. This year saw a number of wins for the genre; original movies like Smile, Barbarian, and X and its prequel Pearl achieved both critical acclaim and box office success, and franchises like Scream, Predator and Hellraiser were all reignited with praised returns.
Like last year, there were a lot of horror movies to watch in 2022. This resulted in movies slipping through the cracks as the year continued, and bigger releases held the spotlight.
These ten hidden gems might have been overlooked at the time, but it’s never too late to discover them.

In retrospect, trapping a whole generation of filmmakers inside their houses with professional grade production equipment for months on end was destined to have an impact on their artistic output. It’s been a few years since the early height of the Covid-19 pandemic, but we’re still uncovering all the strange, low-fidelity projects these artisans came up with.
“Something in the Dirt” is one of the more interesting, if less focused examples.
Directed by Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead, written by Benson, photographed by Moorhead, and co-starring Benson and Moorhead — the two have since gone on to co-direct episodes of “Moon Knight” — “Something in the Dirt” is a sad, paranoid story of two Los Angeles wastrels who just happen to live next to each other. There’s a moment in the Netflix film “The Old Guard” where Marwan Kenzari is sitting, handcuffed in a car, surrounded by guards, next to his partner passed out. And a shitty cop says “what is he, your boyfriend?.” All the cops giggle like morons. And then, Marwan proceeds to give one of the most beautiful speeches about love, ending in, “he’s not my boyfriend, he’s all and he’s more.” And then they kiss. And oh, what a kiss. The next time you see them, they are walking out of that armored van having knocked out all the guards. Not only did that monologue make me cry, but I was so overwhelmed to finally see two openly gay characters in a superhero movie wax poetic about love and then kick major ass. It made me realize that that’s what I’m craving in cinema. I want us to be the superhero,...

The horror genre and mental illness don’t quite go hand-in-hand but movie directors have always found the genre a good way to express and show these problems. From 1963’s The Haunting (and even before that) to more recent films such as Daniel Isn’t Real, real-life problems can always be portrayed in scary ways.
Hypochondriac explores the life of Will (Zac Villa) who as a young boy was nearly murdered by his own mother. She was subsequently put away but despite not seeing her, remained in Will’s thoughts. Now, eighteen years later, he is living a happy life until he starts to hear from his mum in the form of parcels and phone messages. This coincides with Will starting to see things, and although the doctors tell him he is physically okay,...

A thirtysomething man’s traumatic past won’t let him move on in first-time director Addison Heimann’s Hypochondriac. Heimann’s own mental and physical breakdowns inspired this story of an otherwise happy potter descending into paranoia as a result of long-term familial pressures and undiagnosed mental illness. This film feels like a personal catharsis for the director, played out by a solid cast led by a fearless Zach Villa in the semi-autobiographical role of Will. We join Will as he is living the life. A great, creative job, a loving and supportive – if a bit stiff – boyfriend, and the kind of general upbeat disposition that makes others gravitate toward him when they feel down. However, when his estranged mother tries to get back in touch after...

Each year, the Fantasia International Film Festival is full of stories about supernatural horrors and fantasy worlds, but sometimes the most horrific experiences occur in real life, especially when people become overwhelmed and find it difficult to tell reality and fantasy apart. Addison Heimann’s directorial début puts its cards on the table at the outset with the legend ‘based on a real breakdown’. The film utilises several key elements from Heimann’s own life, but its narrative is slightly different and its characters fictional, so there’s no reduction in tension as a result.
The film opens when its hero, Will (played for most of its duration by Zach Villa) is just a boy. His mother (Marlene Forte) spirits him away to a motel one night, distraught about the idea that people are tracking them, and at first it seems as if they might be in real danger, perhaps from an abusive.

“Hypochondriac” informs viewers right away that it is “based on a real breakdown,” which certainly provides a new wrinkle on the now-wildly-overused “true story” proviso. Nonetheless, clarity of hindsight is not a major virtue in this adventurous first feature by writer-director Addison Heimann.
The offbeat indie drama features Zach Villa as a Los Angelean whose troubled past threatens to unravel his domestic partnership and his very sanity. The combination of gay protagonists, mental illness exploration, horror tropes, and surreal elements that gesture toward “Donnie Darko” make for an ambitious mix that holds attention, even if the uneven, somewhat muddled results are ultimately more effortful than insightful.
Following a festival tour that includes a midnight berth at SXSW and fitting slot in genre-focused Fantasia, XYZ Films will open the film in limited release on July 29, with digital and VOD release following Aug. 4.

July is a busy time for us here at Eye For Film as we bring you coverage of two major festivals, Fantasia and Outfest Los Angeles. Next month we’ll be covering Frightfest. Addison Heimann’s tale of family strife and emotional breakdown, Hypochondriac, is screening at all three. Based on a true story, it stars Zach Villa as Will, a young man with a loving relationship and a job he loves whose life abruptly starts to break down after he is contacted by his mentally ill mother, from whom he has been estranged for many years after a violent incident in his childhood. Experiencing panic attacks and hallucinations, Will is tormented by uncertainty over whether these are a result of stress, a manifestation of trauma or a sign that he is developing the same illness. Simon Rieth’s “Summer Scars,” a seaside tale of fraternal love cast in a woozy glow and cut with shocking spikes of violence, won top honors at this year’s Neuchatel International Fantastic Film Festival, claiming the Narcisse Award for best feature film, and with it 10,200 in prize money and a trophy designed Switzerland’s own H.R. Giger.
Del Kathryn Barton’s “Blaze,” an hallucinatory Australian drama that carries a young murder witness into a kaleidoscopic fantasy world, received honorable mention and won the Imaging the Future award for best production design, which comes with a 5100 grant.
Other prizes went to Tunisian director Youssef Chebbi’s “Ashkal,” which won the international critics award; to Italy’s Gabriele Mainetti, whose circus-superhero mashup “Freaks Out” won the Rts audience awards; and to Chris Huang Wen-chang’s “Demigod: The Legend Begins,” a martial arts epic told entirely with puppets, which won the audience award for best Asian film.

"It will disturb you." "It will rip at you." XYZ Films has debuted an official trailer for an indie horror titled Hypochondriac, marking the feature debut of filmmaker Addison Heimann. This premiered at the 2022 SXSW Film Festival back in March, and also played at Panic Fest, Outfest LA, and the Neuchâtel Fantastic Film Festival in Switzerland most recently. Will is a young Hispanic potter / artist with a loving boyfriend and a good life, but when his deranged, mentally ill mother re-emerges after a 10 year absence, it erodes the foundation of the world he has created and exposes a dark past of violence he was desperate to keep hidden. Starring Zach Villa as Will, with Devon Graye, Paget Brewster, Marlene Forte, Madeline Zima, Yumarie Morales, and Chris Doubek. This looks crazy – in a good way. The setup with the story is fine, then it goes to some freaky places in the second half of this trailer.

The pic is billed as an elevated genre film and recently premiered in the Midnighters section at SXSW. XYZ is releasing the film in the U.S. later on in July.
Written and directed by first time director Heimann, the pic stars Zach Villa (American Horror Story), Devon Graye (13 Sins) and Madeline Zima (Californication).
Villa stars as Will, a young Hispanic gay potter with a loving boyfriend and a great job who begins exhibiting unexplainable symptoms when his bipolar mother comes out of the woodwork after ten years of silence. Something sinister lurks in the corner of his vision: a silent and ominous man in a wolf costume. Will spirals into an obsession, determined to solve this mystery of his own.
The movie was produced by Bay Dariz and John Umber under the banner of Minutehand Pictures.

The offbeat comedy is based on the bestselling book Discussion Materials: Tales of a Rookie Wall Street Investment Banker by Bill Keenan. A thirtysomething man’s traumatic past won’t let him move on in first time director Addison Heimann’s Hypochondriac, one of several films dealing explicitly with long-buried psychoses in this year’s SXSW Midnighters section. A great, creative job, a loving and supportive – if a bit stiff – boyfriend, and the kind of general upbeat disposition that makes others gravitate toward him...

A debut like Addison Heimann's "Hypochondriac" turns heads, the same way Richard Bates Jr. once did with "Excision" — an intentional comparison because "Hypochondriac" channels the energy of Bates Jr. doing a "Donnie Darko" riff about mental health. It's impassioned, embraces LGBTQ+ authenticity, and feels fresh despite nearly cloning Donnie's pal Frank except with a wolf costume instead of a bunny. Heimann seamlessly blends nightmarish hallucinations into a traumatic breakdown that roots itself in traumas without treatment. Never as cheap exploitation, just as an alarming in-your-grill metaphor meant to posterize its messages of finding the courage to challenge hopelessness.

There is nothing funny about having a nervous breakdown, so it’s extremely admirable when someone can not only share their story with the world, but also manage to insert humor into a difficult situation. Writer/director Addison Heimann’s feature film debut, Hypochondriac, is an intimate, and sometimes hysterical, glimpse into his own personal experience with mental illness and the film is premiering at this year’s SXSW Film Festival.
Hypochondriac follows a young, gay man named Will, played by Zach Villa (American Horror Story), who gives a wonderfully authentic performance. When Will was a child, his mother (Marlene Forte) began acting strangely and after becoming violent, was admitted to a psychiatric hospital. Will then cut off all communication with his mother, partially on the advice of a therapist, played by Paget Brewster (Criminal Minds), and eighteen years later, he has a boyfriend and a job as a potter for an exclusive gallery.
