Controversial, artistic and beautiful

Warning: Spoilers
Caligula is indeed an immensely controversial production, whereas it is often hailed as one of the all time greats by many - and this ultimate cut of the film finally brings the vision of the director to life as it was intended.

The actors all do an incredible job, many of them legendary names, and Malcholm McDowell in particular shines in what is perhaps his best and most nuanced role; it borders on bizzareness, yet tragedy in succumbing to madness. It is all very powerful, and darkly humourous. The script is incredible, yet very unique and somewhat of an acquired taste; there is nothing at all in terms of censorship, and there are lots of what some may consider very indecent imagery, which proved further controverisal.

The cinematography, cutting and editing is incredible, very artistic, metaphorical and overall beautifully put together, once again accompining the controversial tone of the film, overall very beautifully put together.

Definitely one of the all time greats, though very much an acquired taste. Many at the time did not appreciate this film at all, and it might differ today whether you consider this worthwhile. I would recommend you check it out, though, if you are not faint of heart!
