While Aaron Korsh’s Suits concluded in 2019 after running for nine seasons on the USA Network, the show saw a resurgence after smashing viewership records last year following its debut on Netflix. Following this notable spike in its numbers that left fans craving for more, NBC has now greenlit the first spin-off to the original show, which will star Arrow actor Stephen Amell in the lead.
But considering Amell infamously deemed the SAG-AFTRA strike a reductive tactic, stating that the whole situation was frustrating, some were taken aback by NBC’s decision to have Amell lead Suits: L.A. Reflecting on this surprising casting, Industry Insider Jeff Sneider, alongside John Rocha, touched on the possible reasoning behind NBC’s decision.

By respectively receiving Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor Oscar nominations for “American Fiction,” Jeffrey Wright and Sterling K. Brown made history as the first two Black male cast mates to compete in separate categories for the same film. They are also the eighth pair of performers to earn academy recognition for playing brothers and constitute the 28th case of Oscar-nominated sibling characters overall. Check out our photo gallery of this and the previous 27 examples, which date as far back as 1948.
At this point, the only two people who have won Oscars for playing siblings in the same film are “A Streetcar Named Desire” cast mates Vivien Leigh (Best Actress) and Kim Hunter (Best Supporting Actress). A prolific TV character actor, voiceover artist, and one of the tallest performers in Hollywood has passed away. As confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter, Richard Moll, known by most as the tall, bald bailiff Aristotle Nostradamus "Bull" Shannon on "Night Court" and the voice of Harvey Dent/Two-Face on "Batman: The Animated Series," died at his home in Big Bear Lake, California. He was 80.
At a towering 6-foot-8-inches tall, Moll often played intimidating figures, like his first television role of "Big Thug" on "Welcome Back, Kotter," Harold the Monster on "Here's Boomer," the abominable snowman in the film "Caveman," the gigantic zombie soldier in "House," Hoagie in "The Flintstones," Mestema in "The Dungeon Master," Hugh Kane in "Scary Movie 2," and even one of the Dementors in "Jingle All the Way."

Jessica Lange, Jim Parsons and Celia Keenan-Bolger will star on Broadway this spring in a world premiere production of Paula Vogel’s new Mother Play, to be directed by Tina Landau.
The Second Stage Theater production will begin a limited engagement at Second Stage’s Hayes Theater on Wednesday, April 3, with an official opening on Thursday, April 25.
Mother Play by Pulitzer Prize winner Vogel (How I Learned to Drive) is described by Second Stage as “a bitingly funny and unflinchingly honest new play about the hold our family has over us and the surprises we find when we unpack the past.”
The synopsis: “It’s 1962, just outside of D.C., and matriarch Phyllis is supervising her teenage children, Carl and Martha, as they move into a new apartment. Phyllis has strong ideas about what her children need to do and be to succeed, and woe be the child who finds their own path.

This post contains spoilers for “Wahoo!,” this week’s episode of Reservation Dogs, which is now streaming on Hulu.
Among the great things about Reservation Dogs is that there are no strict storytelling rules. Anything goes in a series which easily toggles between kitchen sink drama, magical realism, and broad comedy, sometimes within the same scene. If an idea fits both the needs of a given story and the series’ larger themes about Indigenous culture, then it’s in, no fuss, no muss. So nobody really worries about why, say,...

Many of the most important queer films in cinema history share a birthplace: the Sundance Film Festival. Organized by the Sundance Institute, the legendary annual fest in Park City, Utah, has boasted international and U.S. premiere titles as varied as the groundbreaking New York ballroom documentary Paris Is Burning in 1991, Donna Deitch’s 1985 lesbian road drama Desert Hearts or even recent masterworks like Luca Guadagnino’s 2017 adaptation of Call Me by Your Name.
The Hollywood Reporter spoke with Kim Yutani, director of programming at Sundance, about some of the most important Lgbtqia+ films to debut there.
“Seeing the films that Sundance has programmed over the years, especially around the early 1990s with the New Queer Wave, that was what attracted me to Sundance,” says Yutani, who’s been working with the festival for 17 years, and has also worked in various positions within the film industry, like as Gregg Araki...

James Stewart, more affectionately known as “Jimmy” to his fans, was an Oscar-winning performer who became famous for his polite, gentle screen persona, often playing the aww-shucks boy next door. Yet he also showed his range with a series of performances that found him playing against type. Let’s take a look back at 25 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1908, Stewart earned his first Oscar nomination as Best Actor for playing an idealistic young senator in “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington” (1939), which firmly established him as the patron saint of the common man. He clinched his one and only victory the very next year for “The Philadelphia Story” (1940), playing a tabloid reporter who stumbles into the marital strife of a high society couple (Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant).

Ingmar Bergman had Liv Ullmann. Woody Allen had Diane Keaton and Christopher Guest had Catherine O’Hara — that’s how actor John Michael Higgins summed up the stature of O’Hara’s work on screen with Guest and other top directors during a wide-ranging Q&a held Saturday as part of the sixth annual USC Comedy Festival.
The Emmy-winning O’Hara was honored with the Jack Oakie and Victoria Horne Oakie Masters of Comedy Award at the festival, in recognition of her long, and often underrated, career in film, TV, stage and sketch comedy.
The Oakie Foundation honors the lives and work of two comedy legends, Jack Oakie and Victoria Horne Oakie. Jack Oakie won a supporting actor Oscar for Charlie Chaplins’ 1940 satire “The Great Dictator.” Victoria Oakie was a comedy trouper who had supporting roles (as Victoria Horne) in numerous films, most memorably opposite Jimmy Stewart in 1950’s “Harvey.”

Over the course of its original 10-season run, "Murphy Brown" was consistently considered one of the best sitcoms on television and made a star out of its leading lady Candice Bergen. One of its key ingredients for success was the character of Jim Dial, the lead news anchor for "Fyi," played by Charles Kimbrough. With his overly articulated speech and rich baritone, he made what should be the face of trustworthiness and intelligence into a delightful straight-laced buffoon, earning the actor an Emmy nomination in 1990.
Sadly, Charles Kimbrough has passed away at the age of 86. Appearing on stage and screens big and small, the Tony-nominated actor had a robust career going all the way back to the late 1960s that ranged from Shakespeare on Broadway to voicing Victor the gargoyle in Disney's "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" to a supporting role in the romantic comedy "The Wedding Planner." The highest appeals court in the state of New York will hear Harvey Weinstein’s case based on “questions of law … which ought to be reviewed,” the Court of Appeals announced Wednesday.
Weinstein was convicted in 2020 of rape and sexual assault, and a lower court upheld that conviction in June. The Court of Appeals has granted Weinsten’s application, and the ruling on Wednesday from New York State of Appeals Chief Judge Janet Difiore will clear the way for oral arguments to begin next year before the entire court, a court spokesman told NBC News.
“I’m hopeful that this is the opportunity to finally prove my innocence,” Weinstein said in a Wednesday statement to The New York Post.

After a 15 months delay, the 74th annual Tony Awards honoring the best of Broadway will be held September 26 on CBS and Paramount +. And there a lot of familiar faces expected at the ceremony at the Winter Garden Theatre including six-time Tony winner Audra McDonald, who is nominated for the revival of “Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune”; Jane Alexander, who won her first Tony Award 52 years ago for “The Great White Hope” and contends for “Grand Horizons”; and 90-year-old Lois Smith, who made her Broadway debut nearly 70 years ago, is up for “The Inheritance.”
The Tony Awards first ceremony, held April 6 1947 at the Grand Ballroom of the famed Waldorf-Astoria hotel in New York City, was a vastly different affair. Awards were handed out in only eight categories. Producer, director and Tony founder Brock Pemberton was the host of the evening which was broadcast on Wor and Mutual Network radio stations.

With this year’s French Open recently concluding, it’s the opportune time to watch one of cinema’s greatest sports documentaries. Capturing the annual tennis event 40 years ago, Muhammed Ali, the Greatest director William Klein’s The Open takes an intimate look at the 1981 French Open with John McEnroe, Chris Evert, Yannick Noah, Arthur Ashe, Martina Navratilova, and Björn Borg. Set to open virtually at Metrograph starting this Friday, we’re pleased to present the exclusive trailer.
As the official synopsis reads, “In 1981, Klein and three camera crews were given exclusive, unprecedented access to the tournament for the first time in its 90-year history, and using that doorway into locker rooms, TV studios, and players’ boxes, he shot the ultimate behind-the-scenes look at the 1981 French Open. Yuh-Jung Youn, a legendary actress in her native Korea, made history in the U.S. on Sunday when she became the third oldest Best Supporting Actress winner in Oscars history, winning for her performance as Soon-ja, the scene-stealing grandmother in the six-time Academy Award-nominated film “Minari,” which tells the story of a Korean immigrant family as they attempt to start a farm in rural Arkansas in the 1980s.
At 73 years and 310 days old, Youn, who’s made headlines in recent months for her candid but always delightful acceptance speeches, now sits behind Josephine Hull, who was 74 years and 85 days old when she won for “Harvey” (1950). Both women trail Peggy Ashcroft by a few years; she was 77 years and 93 days old when she won for “A Passage to India” (1984), making her the oldest supporting actress winner. Of course, the oldest nominee in the category remains “Titanic” (1997) star Gloria Stuart, who was...

Yuh-Jung Youn took home the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for “Minari” on Sunday, making history in multiple ways — most notably becoming just the second Asian actress to win an Oscar.
The Korean legend follows in the footsteps of Japanese actress Miyoshi Umeki, who won the same category for her performance in “Sayonara” (1957). Youn was the first supporting actress nominee of Asian descent since Hailee Steinfeld, who is of Filipino descent, contested for 2010’s “True Grit.”
No woman of Asian descent has won Best Actress and only one has been nominated: Merle Oberon, who was of Indian descent and hid her background during her career, for “The Dark Angel” (1935). Including the men, Best Supporting Actor winner Haing S. Ngor (1984’s “The Killing Fields”) is the last man of Asian descent to win either male category; Ben Kingsley (1982’s “Gandhi”) was the last in Best Actor.

The 2021 Oscar nominees for Best Supporting Actress are Maria Bakalova (“Borat Subsequent Moviefilm”), Glenn Close (“Hillbilly Elegy”), Olivia Colman (“The Father”), Amanda Seyfried (“Mank”), and Yuh-jung Youn (“Minari”). Our odds currently indicate that Youn (16/5) will emerge victorious, followed in order by Bakalova (4/1), Close (4/1), Colman (9/2), and Seyfried (9/2).
All of this year’s nominees are new to the category except Close, who previously garnered three consecutive bids for “The World According to Garp” (1983), “The Big Chill” (1984), and “The Natural” (1985). She also earned recognition for her lead roles in “Fatal Attraction” (1988), “Dangerous Liaisons” (1989), “Albert Nobbs” (2012), and “The Wife” (2019). Since she lost the Best Actress race two years ago, Close has stood alone as the woman with the most acting nominations and no wins.
Close was bested in 2019 by Colman, whose victory for “The Favourite” makes her the only past winner in this group. They are now the 15th pair of actresses to face...

There is no doubt about it: Yuh-Jung Youn is having a great year. The legendary Korean actress has already received a Screen Actors Guild Award and the corresponding BAFTA Award for her supporting role as Soon-ja, the scene-stealing grandmother in the six-time Academy Award-nominated film “Minari,” which tells the story of a Korean immigrant family as they attempt to start a farm in rural Arkansas in the 1980s. Should she win the supporting actress Oscar on April 25, she’ll become the third oldest winner in the category.

This article contains no spoilers and is based on the first two episodes of Birdgirl.
Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law was one of the five original series to debut back on Adult Swim when the programming block was first created. The network has evolved in considerable ways since its inception, but even back then Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law was an important series that helped establish the acerbic and dadaist style of humor that continues to define Adult Swim to this day.
Now, 20 years after the premiere of Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law and Adult Swim as a whole, Birdgirl returns to this beloved universe, appropriately enough as Adult Swim heads into a new phase. Birdgirl is a delight that’s a worthy successor to one of Adult Swim’s flagship programs, but it’s also its own entity that has something very different to say about bureaucratic superheroes in bird costumes.

Glenn Close turned 74 on Friday, March 19, just four days after receiving her eighth Oscar nomination for her performance in “Hillbilly Elegy.” Once again, Oscar watchers are buzzing about whether this may finally be her time to win or if she will extend her record as the living actor with the most nominations without a win. Should she take home the Best Supporting Actress statuette next month, she would become the third oldest winner in this category in academy history.

There’s a good chance that “Mank,” David Fincher’s stylish black-and-white chronicle of veteran Hollywood screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz’ struggle to write the screenplay for Orson Welles’ 1941 masterpiece “Citizen Kane,” will dominate the Oscar nominations on March 15. Our Oscar experts are predicting the Netflix release could garner has many has 13 nominations including picture, director, screenplay for Fincher’s latest father Jack Fincher, actor for Gary Oldman and supporting actress for Amanda Seyfried.
Exactly 70 years ago Mank’s brother, writer/director Joseph L. Mankiewicz, dominated the Academy Awards. His “All About Eve,” a sophisticated and sharp drama starring Bette Davis as aging theater actress Margo Channing who mistakenly befriends and mentors an ambitious young actress Eve Harrington (Anne Baxter), earned 14 Oscar nominations. “All About Eve” actually broke all records for Oscar nominations besting 1939’s “Gone with the Wind” lucky 13 bids.

Born Florence Pope on May 15, 1929, in Montclair, NJ, she began her long career on Broadway in the late 1950s, appearing in small roles in a handful of short-lived plays. She ultimately would appear in seven Main Stem shows through 1975, including the 1970 revival of Harvey, for which James Stewart reprised his Oscar-nominated lead role as Elwood P. Dawn Dunning, a one-time aspiring actress now working as a costume designer, on Wednesday testified that in 2004 Harvey Weinstein put his hand up her skirt and touched her genitals without her consent. The mogul later propositioned her to have a threesome with him and his assistant in exchange for roles in his upcoming films, she added on the witness stand in Weinstein’s criminal trial.
Dunning said she was waitressing at a nightclub in the Meatpacking District when she first met Weinstein. After introducing herself as an actress, Dunning said she and Weinstein had several meetings where the then-mogul offered to set up screen tests for her at Miramax for some of his upcoming films.
During these initial meetings, Dunning said that Weinstein made comments about her looks and her body, but that she didn’t feel “unsafe” at the time. But one day, when she was invited by Weinstein...

“The Sopranos” actress Annabella Sciorra testified on Thursday that Harvey Weinstein raped her in her Manhattan apartment around 1993 during an emotional and often tearful appearance in a New York courtroom.
“I was punching him, I was kicking him, I was just trying to get him away from me and he took my hands and put my hands over my head to hold me back,” she said on the stand as a witness for the prosecution, getting choked up as she demonstrated where she said he held her hands.
At that point, Sciorra said, Weinstein raped her and then ejaculated onto her leg and nightgown. He then began to perform oral sex on her without her consent, she said, and her body began to react.
“My body shut down,” she said. “It was just so disgusting that my body started to shake in a way that was very unusual. I didn...

Gigi Hadid could be deciding the fate of Harvey Weinstein in the disgraced mogul’s criminal trial. The fashion model appeared in the Manhattan courtroom of Justice James Burke on Monday as a potential juror in the case.
Inside the courtroom during prescreening, Hadid said, “I have met the defendant” but said she could still be impartial. “I think I’m still able to keep an open mind on the facts.”
She received a juror questionnaire and is expected to return to court on Thursday.
She did not respond to questions after leaving the courtroom.

Harvey Weinstein’s cellphone use in the courtroom could be the violation that sends him to jail, Justice James Burke warned on Tuesday morning.
The second day of Weinstein’s trial opened with a heated exchange between the judge and the defense after Weinstein was caught — once again — using his cellphone in the Manhattan, New York, courtroom, which is strictly prohibited for everyone inside.
“What did I say would happen if he so much as had a cellphone in his hand in the courtroom, since there have been repeated violations of this, including some on the record?” Burke asked the defense sternly.

Harvey Weinstein will not be able to delay his criminal trial in New York due to the new charges of rape and sexual battery in Los Angeles, a trial judge ruled on Tuesday.
Justice James Burke denied a request from Weinstein’s defense for a “cooling off period” before the court began jury selection due to the L.A. district attorney’s office four sexual assault charges against Weinstein, which were announced on Monday.
The pre-screening process for jury selection was scheduled for Tuesday, but before potential jurors even stepped into the courtroom, Arthur Aidala — one of Weinstein’s attorneys — brought out copies of the New York Daily News, New York Post and the New York Times to argue that it would be impossible for the court to select a fair and impartial jury given the publication of the L.A. charges.
