The centerpiece of Scott Ora’s cluttered San Fernando Valley apartment is the 1939 Oscar his step-grandfather, the late lyricist Leo Robin, was presented for co-writing “Thanks for the Memory.” Sung by Bob Hope and Shirley Ross in the film “The Big Broadcast of 1938,” the trophy sits proudly on the piano where Robin worked on some of his biggest hits. The movie marked the comedian’s breakout role and Leo’s tune, co-written with frequent collaborator Ralph Rainger, soon became Hope’s theme song. It was Robin’s only Academy Award win out of a total of 10 nominations.
Over the course of 20 years, from 1934 (when the best original song category was introduced and he was nominated for “Love in Bloom”) through 1954, Robin, a member of the Songwriters Hall of Fame who died in 1984 at the age of 84, earned 10 Oscar nominations (two in 1949 alone). You’d be hard-pressed to find a more beloved mother/daughter duo than Debbie Reynolds and Carrie Fisher, who tragically passed away within a day of each other this week: Fisher at the age of 60 on December 27, Reynolds at 84 on the 28th. A bevy of tributes to the two will air over the course of the next month.

Reaction to the painfully sad news was so swift, in fact, that two networks have already honored the departed stars: ABC played an hour-long “20/20” special called “Debbie and Carrie: A Hollywood Love Story” last night, while Logo began its tribute with a “Will & Grace” marathon last night. Reynolds earned an Emmy nomination for playing Debra Messing’s mother on the sitcom, which is currently playing on the channel for three more...

Hit the deck! Rat-a-tat-tat!! These are the sounds of a cinema staple, the gangster genre. From the early silent days, “thugs with dirty mugs” were the source of many a “hit” at the box office, of course. Soon after the Brothers Warner began their studio, they quickly became the premiere producers of these “blood and thunder” morality plays, featuring a “murderers’ row” of movie icons headed by James Cagney, Edward G Robertson, and Humphrey Bogart. In the waning years of Hollywood’s Golden Age, these thrillers often merged with the biography genre with the stories of real-life 20’s and 30’s criminals like John Dillinger, Bonnie Parker, and Clyde Barrow, and, the big man himself, “Scarface” Al Capone. With the phenomenal success of The Godfather, these “public enemies” were back in vogue, continuing even to this day. Now the Warners are back in the true tale gangster biz, but they’re...

My weekend was mostly spent on public transport, all of the types, but mostly lengthy bus journeys. Arriving in London, tired with no real sleep, on the second day of four might not be the best mood to be in for a gig, but plenty of cider will see you through – oh, and the fact that said gig is part of Bleeding Through’s last ever. In January of this year alumni of the early noughts class of metalcore announced that this European tour would be their last; information soon followed by the announcement of their break up by the end of this year.
A great shame given the generally pulverising output the band have been putting out in their time, including some absolute classic albums of the metalcore genre – even though the band set themselves apart from the rest of the class with symphonic black metal influences, hints of industrial and atmospherics,...

American entertainer and singer popular in the 1940s and 50s
The American entertainer Tony Martin, who has died aged 98, was once described as a singing tuxedo. Although he was rather a stiff actor, he was handsome and charming, with a winning, dimpled smile. What mattered most, however, was his mellifluous baritone voice, which he used softly in ballads such as To Each His Own and I Get Ideas, and powerfully in Begin the Beguine and There's No Tomorrow, all hit records in the 1940s and 50s.
He was one of the top crooners of the period with Vic Damone, Andy Williams and Dick Haymes, all of them just below Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra in esteem and popularity. According to Mel Tormé: "Tony Martin was technically the greatest singer of them all, as well as being the classiest guy around, both as an entertainer and a person."

Baby Godzilla is one of the coolest band names you’ll hear in a while. It managed to grab my attention, anyway. That, and the dashing red envelope I received the promo in of their scything 7-track mini album really did get my intrigue whizzing around my clouded brain. It’s not often, after all, that I receive lovely red envelopes with stuff for review – it’s usually all boring brown envelopes stuffed with bubble wrap – and the blurry, golden image of a reclining, bearded man at the bottom of the envelope did actually make me a bit more cheerful as I clawed the post out of my letter-box with a standard hangover head.
I had no idea what to expect from the band, in all honesty they’d slipped under my radar, so I stuck the CD in...

Before he even knew what a crush was, Mike Kaplan had one on 1940s Hollywood star Jane Powell. Decades later, he got a chance to meet her
I'm not sure: either Jane Powell made me fall in love with the movies, or I fell in love with Jane Powell and the movies followed. In either case, I was six and she was my first crush before I knew what a crush was.
The year was 1948, the movie was Luxury Liner. Powell was 19, and played a spunky adolescent stowaway on a cruise ship. Her father, George Brent, is the captain, and when he discovers her aboard, she's made to scrub decks, peel potatoes and then play cupid to the various shipboard romances. She was cute, vivacious and captivating. The luxury liner might never have left the soundstages, but Powell convinced you that you were sailing across the ocean, because she sparkled with sincerity and intelligence.
