This week, we've been celebrating Simone Signoret's centennial, an unlikely sex-symbol of the midcentury and an even more atypical Oscar champion. Previously, Daniel wrote about the French actress' brief appearance in La Ronde, and Eric paid tribute to what's probably her most excellent vehicle, Casque d'Or. Now that it's my turn to wax poetic about Madame Signoret, I find myself in a bit of a conundrum. You see, even before the centennial celebrations, the actress had been on my mind. Though, it wasn't because of a film she starred in or individual performance. Watching the animated film No. 7 Cherry Lane, I can't help but think that no one will ever be able to create a more beautiful homage to this star than director Yonfan…...

Today is the centennial of French Oscar-winner Simone Signoret. Daniel paid lovely tribute to her last night for her brief role in 1950's La Ronde. Her next big film, director Jacques Becker's 1952 movie Casque d'Or, made her a star six years before Oscar embraced her with Room at the Top. Becker captures all of Signoret's magic in this turn-of-the-century Paris underworld story. It doesn't hurt that he has his cinematographer, Robert Le Febvre, lighting her in a gloriously celestial way throughout the movie...

"The Furniture," by Daniel Walber, is a series on Production Design.
Thursday marks 100 years since the birth of iconic French actress Simone Signoret. But how to celebrate? By my count, she was in three films nominated for Best Production Design. One of them, Is Paris Burning?, I covered way back in 2016. Another, Ship of Fools, also nabbed Signoret her second nomination for Best Actress. Unfortunately, it’s something of a bloated and maudlin mess.
That leaves us with La Ronde, a film made shortly before Signoret really burst into international stardom. She’s barely in it, playing a Viennese sex worker who bookends the meandering narrative. Even so, it’s her movie star quality that makes the whole thing work - that and the magic of Jean d’Eaubonne’s Oscar-nominated production design, of course. The film is Max Ophüls’s adaptation of an Arthur Schnitzler play, a circular jaunt that slips from paramour to paramour.

Emmanuel Mouret’s semi-circular Love Affair(s), aka The Things We Say, The Things We Do starring Camélia Jordana, Niels Schneider, Vincent Macaigne, Guillaume Gouix, Julia Piaton, Émilie Dequenne, and Jenna Thiam, produced by Frédéric Niedermayer has received a record 13 César nominations and is an éclair of a highlight in New York’s Rendez-Vous with French Cinema.
Unlike Nicole Garcia's Lovers, Mouret presents us with characters who seem to be under no economic or, God forbid, existential straits. Love Affair(s), not as circular as Marcel Ophüls’ La Ronde based on Schnitzler’s play, but with just as many entanglements, explores love lives in turmoil. Shot by Laurent Desmet (Mouret’s Lady J), the soundtrack runs the gamut from Clair de Lune to Peer Gynt and back. Their jobs (documentary editor, translator, in the building...

Leanza Cornett, the former Miss America and ex-wife of Mark Steines, has died. She was 49.
Cornett suffered a “serious head injury” on Oct. 12, according to her health & wellness group Leanza Cornett’s Circle of Love. That Facebook group has been giving regular updates on Cornett since she was hospitalized. No cause of death was given, but CBS reported that the Jacksonville native, a mother of two, fell earlier this month.
After suffering what Cornett’s group referred to as “an enormous blow to the back of her head,” she was admitted to the ICU and underwent surgery to “stop the bleeding in her brain,” but the bleeding and swelling continued.
In addition to her 1993 Miss America pageant win, Cornett appeared as both herself and in small acting roles on numerous TV shows. In 1996, for example, Cornett guested on “Saved by the Bell: The New Class” as “Carol.”

A central figure in French cinema, Bertrand Tavernier has an encyclopedic knowledge of the craft of filmmaking akin to the likes of Martin Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino. The sense of history he possesses is seen in both his narrative and documentary, the latter of which is perhaps best exemplified in his recent film My Journey Through French Cinema. Clocking in at 3.5 hours, that 2016 documentary has now received a follow-up expansion with an eight-part series and we’re pleased to debut the U.S. trailer.
Titled Journeys Through French Cinema, the director-writer-actor-producer explores the filmmakers that most influenced him, how the cinema of France changed when the country was German occupation, the unknown films and filmmakers he admires (with a focus on female directors), and much more. From better-known filmmakers such as Jacques Tati, Robert Bresson, and Jacques Demy to ones in need of (re)discovery such as Raymond Bernard, Maurice Turner,...

Above: Us one sheet for Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice. Two weeks ago, as the 57th New York Film Festival kicked off, I griped about the uninspiring quality of the posters for the films in the festival’s main slate. 50 years ago it was a very different story. The posters I have found for the 19 films in the 1969 main selection make up a dazzling collection of illustration and forward thinking graphic design, even, or especially, the type-only poster for the only studio film in the festival: Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice which was the opening night film on September 16 (notably a Tuesday evening).Of course, many of these posters might have been made months or even a year after the festival, since we’re looking back with half a century of hindsight, and many of this year’s designs will no doubt be updated, but this was also the era in which...

The streaming TV biz passed the ultimate Emmy threshold on Sunday night, as Hulu’s “The Handmaid’s Tale” made history.
“Handmaid’s Tale” picked up the win for outstanding drama series, which represents the first time a streaming service had one won of the top Emmy series prizes. It was just four years ago, in 2013, that Netflix became the first streaming platform to win an Emmy, as “House of Cards” picked up a handful of victories.
“Streaming has arrived, and we’re here to say what a wonderful journey,” said “Handmaid’s Tale” executive producer Warren Littlefield. Added exec producer Bruce Miller: “The way Hulu handled our show, they were bold and behind us and committed to making something interesting.”

There are few living legends in Hollywood, but Dolly Parton is certainly one of them. The crossover musician has decades’ worth of accolades to her name, including two Oscar nominations and nine Grammy Awards, but there was once a time when she was just a little dreamer from rural Tennessee. With NBC’s Emmy-nominated “Christmas of Many Colors: Circle of Love” (the follow-up to last year’s “Coat of Many Colors”), she retells her rags-to-riches story as an actor and producer. We spoke with Parton about landing a nod for Outstanding Television Movie and now taking her story to the Broadway stage. Congratulations on your Emmy nomination! What’s been your favorite part about bringing this project to the small screen? I think it’s great that I get to tell something from my childhood. People have followed me through the years and they’ve heard my little story and...

But with not enough volunteers to go around, she noticed that most of the children were by themselves, without a buddy like her.
“I wanted to help the kids so they didn’t have to go through this alone,” Sokol, 27, of Philadelphia, recalls. “I thought, ‘Here I am on a campus with all these students who want to help. How could I bring the two together?’ “

A “snub” implies a conscious dismissal; a knowing exclusion; a willful act of disdainful rebuffing. And in the era of “too much TV,” the idea of Emmy voters purposefully boxing out anyone other than Donald Trump is a bit nutty. Those who don’t make the cut aren’t “snubs” so much as they’re… leftovers.
But the 2017 nomination list sure was filled with surprises, good and bad. And while we’d like to refer to the surprising exclusions as leftovers, that’s just too darn confusing when so many of the excluded came from a show called “The Leftovers.” So we’re sticking with snubs. Just know that we know the TV Academy didn’t mean anything by it.

After breaking into the major categories for the first time last year, FX’s critically acclaimed drama was kicked right back out of the Drama Series race.

Dolly Parton has said that of all the songs she’s written, “Jolene” is the most-recorded by other artists. But it’s never been heard like this before!
On Tuesday’s episode of The Voice, the 70-year-old country icon joined goddaughter and Voice coach Miley Cyrus for a stunning a cappella performance of her 1973 hit.
The family duo was joined by The Sing-Off champs and Grammy winners Pentatonix. Together, the three artists beautifully blended their voices in the haunting tune.

Did NBC just use The Voice Top 10 results night to aggressively cross-promote upcoming premieres of Christmas of Many Colors: Circle of Love and Hollywood Game Night?
Yeah, sure, but who cares? We got not one but two performances from living legend Dolly Parton, a mildly amusing bit of filler in which Jane Lynch got Blake Shelton and Miley Cyrus to sing into a fun-house microphone and an appearance by Pentatonix that makes me wonder if the Peacock Net might be considering a relaunch/reboot/revival of The Sing-Off. (I mean, they brought back Heroes for a minute, so anything’s possible.

"The first one was real emotional because it was the first time on camera my family had been exposed," Parton says. "But this one has so many things in it that will really pull at your heart."

Dolly Parton is gearing up for another Golden anniversary.
Less than one year after celebrating her 50th wedding anniversary with husband Carl Dean, Parton will celebrate the 50th anniversary of her debut album, Hello, I'm Dolly, in February. To help her get ready for the occasion, Et caught up with the living legend in Nashville on Thursday to reflect on her five decades in the spotlight.
"It makes you feel proud. It makes you feel old, but it makes you feel like you might have done something good in your life," the 70-year-old superstar said. "Just being a part of country music after all these years, I feel like I've been here a long time."
It's no surprise that Parton has achieved such massive career longevity. During her first Et sit-down in 1982, the "Jolene" singer told us: "I will never retire, I like the work!"

Welcome to a somewhat light month for traditional new TV programming – all the better to pay attention to the noteworthy broadcasts emerging from more unlikely sources. (There are a few interesting, big-name shows dropping on Netflix and Amazon this month as well, of course – check our Best Things to Stream feature tomorrow for those.) Sure, there's prestige-lite TV like Showtime's temporally tweaked soap opera The Affair, returning for its third season. But how about an autobiographical, Christianity-infused holiday special from Dolly Parton, who cameos as a “working girl”? Or perhaps...

Theo James isn’t too keen on the “Circle of Love.” James spoke to Stephen Colbert about the uncomfortable acting exercise he practiced as a student at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School in England. “They made us do some horrendous stuff,” James said. “Some stuff that I have still not recovered from.” “Circle of Love” is one particular acting exercise he could recount for all the wrong reasons. James elaborated on the exercise that required everyone to sit next to one another in a big circle. Each person must turn to the actor next to them and reveal four things they love about them. James emphasized the actors didn’t really know each other yet. “They got to me and I was like, ‘I just really need to vomit,’ ” James said. Colbert decided to get in on the fun and play a round of “Circle of Love” with James...

If These Walls Could Catcall: Khoo’s Sex Omnibus Fails to Tantalize
Singaporean auteur Eric Khoo returns with his latest feature, In the Room, a decades spanning, multi-character chamber piece revolving around the inhabitants of a single hotel room and the private moments of love and intimacy that transpire there. Less titillating than the sum of its parts, documenting various acts across a range of orientations with a sort of unhurried inevitability, only the aural cues of creaky bed springs manage to wrench any tactile examination of humankind’s basic physical co-mingling.
Conservative, even rather rigid in its visual purveyance of sexual practices and traditional interactions, in Khoo’s preferred universe of multiple storylines, perhaps this time around he casts too many stories into the pool (unlike his celebrated 2005 title Be With Me, which consists of three separate stories), since despite the use of a unifying thread, the film’s...

Lust, Actually: Lawson’s Sexually Charged Debut Struggles with What Women Want
Taking home the audience prize at the 2015 SXSW Film Festival, Australian director Josh Lawson makes some decidedly risqué choices with his debut, The Little Death, which is basically an omnibus of alternative sexual practices rarely explored in the cinematic arena of the heterosexual. Mostly motivated by the complicated and sometimes controversial secret desires of women, the film, taking its name from the French idiom for orgasm, is sometimes refreshingly blunt as it navigates through several scenarios. However, it is just as often silly and unsubstantial, with an undefined purpose setting in as we close with an unseemly end to the common thread.
Maeve (Bojana Novakovic) and her boyfriend Paul (Lawson) set us off on in the circle. She’s getting her feet sucked, but confides after their bout of lovemaking her real fantasy involves being raped. Except she...

Simone Simon in 'La Bête Humaine' 1938: Jean Renoir's film noir (photo: Jean Gabin and Simone Simon in 'La Bête Humaine') (See previous post: "'Cat People' 1942 Actress Simone Simon Remembered.") In the late 1930s, with her Hollywood career stalled while facing competition at 20th Century-Fox from another French import, Annabella (later Tyrone Power's wife), Simone Simon returned to France. Once there, she reestablished herself as an actress to be reckoned with in Jean Renoir's La Bête Humaine. An updated version of Émile Zola's 1890 novel, La Bête Humaine is enveloped in a dark, brooding atmosphere not uncommon in pre-World War II French films. Known for their "poetic realism," examples from that era include Renoir's own The Lower Depths (1936), Julien Duvivier's La Belle Équipe (1936) and Pépé le Moko (1937), and particularly Marcel Carné's Port of Shadows (1938) and Daybreak (1939).[11] This thematic and...

After a new print screened at the 2014 City of Lights City of Angels Festival earlier this spring, Cohen Media Group has released a digitally remastered Blu-ray of Otar Iosseliani’s 1984 classic yet elusive title, Favorites of the Moon. Awarded the Special Jury Prize at the 41st Venice International Film Festival, the film, along with most of the Georgian filmmaker’s titles, have long been unavailable to U.S. audiences, a shame considering his prolific stature and important body of work that subversively undermines frameworks within the dominant culture he’s navigating as an exiled dissident.
Taking its title from Shakespeare’s Henry IV describing thieves, “Diana’s foresters, gentlemen of the shade, favorites of the moon,” Iosseliani expounds on the same motif, casting all of humanity in the shade of the moon, a symbol of disorder, chaos and unrest. In essence, the plot is a roundelay, utilizing a set of...

What do Rachel Weisz, Anthony Hopkins, Jude Law, Ben Foster, Jamel Debbouze, Moritz Bleibtreu all have in common? If the trailer for "360" (via iTunes) is anything to go on, they apparently all want to bone each other.
Screenwriter Peter Morgan ("The Queen," "Skyfall") was inspired by Arthur Schnitzler's classic 1897 play "La Ronde" ("Circle of Love"), later made into a film by Max Ophüls in 1950 and by Roger Vadim in 1964.
If you recall, Schnitzler's work also formed the basis for Stanley Kubrick's "Eyes Wide Shut," which should give you an idea of the sexual candor on display in this film.
Like "La Ronde," "360" revolves around men and women from all different social strata coming together for couplings. Each vignette explores the period either directly before or after the beast with two backs is formed, and delves into many facets of 21st century sexual politics and how a little nookie...

Graphic murders meet 70s Italian chic, in a film that exemplifies the Giallo horror genre that become so popular under the helm of director Dario Argento, amongst others. The Cat O’Nine Tails is released on Monday for the first time on Blu-ray, read on for our review…

Rachel Weisz is to reunite with director Fernando Meirelles for his latest project, a sexual drama called 360.
It's based on Arthur Schnitzler's 1900 play Reigen, which followed couples and their sexual encounters in 1890s Vienna (which happens to be the city where Weisz's mother was born), showing how sex crosses social class divisions.
With a title meaning a round dance, the play consists of ten scenes between pairs of lovers.
They are connected as each new character goes on to appear in the next scene with a different partner, bringing the story full circle.
There have been several previous adaptations of the work, with Internet Movie Database listing - among others - La Ronde (1950), Circle of Love (1964) and Dance of Love (1973).
It is not known what role Weisz will play in this new film, which will be penned by Oscar-nominated screenwriter Peter Morgan, of The Queen and Frost/Nixon fame.
