Revenge! They say it’s best served cold, but sometimes a giant steaming pile of revenge can be really satisfying. The female revenge story is a subgenre that emerged from the old exploitation film days. The woman who is wronged in some way, usually by evil men, who then has to work her way back to enact revenge upon her tormentors always seems to end satisfyingly as they get their comeuppance. Let’s check out some of the best female revenge films where badass women put their enemies in their place.

As a child, Christopher Wheeldon was a ballet and musical theater kid, like as not listening to Tchaikovsky while his brothers had Michael Jackson’s Thriller on the turntable. His idea of an afternoon’s art project was reimagining the Victorian toy theater his father had built him into a Starlight Express set for his little electric cars. “I was that kid,” he says with a laugh.
But by the time Jackson had moved on to Bad in 1987, Wheeldon was ready to follow. “When I finally went to ballet boarding school, the Bad album was, kind of, my album. Those were my teen years, and my friends and I obsessively watched the Bad video. As ballet students, I think probably we saw the link to West Side Story, and I was starting to learn about Jerome Robbins and who he was and what he meant to theater, and so at...

In the new episode of our Rolling Stone Music Now podcast, Rob Sheffield and Brittany Spanos join host Brian Hiatt for a track-by-track analysis of Harry Styles’ new album, Harry’s House.
To hear the whole episode, press play above, or listen on or Spotify or Apple Podcasts. Here’s a preview of some of the discussion:
“Music for a Sushi Restaurant”
Hiatt: It does seem to be advertising a sort of freedom and confidence in the very wacky synth horn parts and almost Oingo Boingo-ness of that.
Spanos: I absolutely love this song.

Michael Jackson, the late "King of Pop," was hardly a stranger to legendary collaborations. Most notably, there's the 1983 music video for "Thriller" directed by John Landis — which remains the only music video ever to be inducted into the United States National Film Registry. Forever changing the visual landscape of what a music video can be, "Michael Jackson's Thriller" famously mined from groundbreaking horror motifs of the time to, well, thrill audiences. Inspired by Landis' film "An American Werewolf in London," Jackson also employed special effects creator Rick Baker to oversee his initial monstrous transformation into a terrifying were-cat.

Imagine Dragons draw inspiration from Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” in the music video for the band’s recent single, “Bones.” The clip, directed by Jason Koenig, depicts a zombie apocalypse on Wall Street, transforming a stock exchange trading floor into a playground for the undead.
Frontman Dan Reynolds plays a day trader — decked out in 80s-inspired clothing — in the clip, which is filled with brain-eating, dancing zombies in homage to the 1983 “Thriller” video, a favorite of Reynolds’ children.
“It definitely served as the inspiration for the ‘Bones’ video,” Reynolds said of “Thriller” in a statement.

No two ways about it: April’s a great month for the Criterion Channel, which (among other things; more in a second) adds two recent favorites. We’re thrilled at the SVOD premiere of Hamaguchi’s entrancing Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy, our #3 of 2021, and Bruno Dumont’s lacerating France, featuring Léa Seydoux’s finest performance yet.
Ethan Hawke’s Adventures in Moviegoing runs the gamut from Eagle Pennell’s Last Night at the Alamo to 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days, while a 14-film John Ford retro (mostly) skips westerns altogether. And no notes on the Delphine Seyrig retro—multiple by Akerman, Ulrike Ottinger, Duras, a smattering of Buñuel, and Seyrig’s own film Be Pretty and Shut Up! That of all things might be the crown jewl.
See the full list of April titles below and more on the Criterion Channel.

Jimmy Kimmel continued his observations Wednesday of the ongoing confirmation hearings for Joe Biden’s Supreme Court nominee Ketanji Brown Jackson. And as he’s done most of the week, he specifically focused on the lines of questioning from Republican senators, or as Kimmel put it, the “3-ring circle jerk.”
“You know it was another day of grandstanding, speechmaking and hissy fitting in the Senate today,” Kimmel said at the start of his monologue. “It was day three of the confirmation hearings for Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson. 58% of Americans support Judge Jackson’s appointment to the Supreme Court. It is the most support a Jackson has had since Thriller came out.”
“She has said that the fact that she was even nominated shows how far we’ve come as a country,” Kimmel continued, “and so some of the Republican Senators on the committee have been hard at work to show how far we haven’t.

Lionsgate will distribute a new Michael Jackson biopic that will be produced by “Bohemian Rhapsody’s” Graham King. The film is being made with the cooperation of the Michael Jackson estate, which may impact how it deals with the multiple allegations of child sexual abuse that were brought against the King of Pop over the course of his career and following his 2009 death.
Entitled “Michael,” the film will be produced by King, who mined similar terrain with Freddie Mercury, and the co-executors of the Michael Jackson estate, John Branca and John McClain. The screenplay is by three-time Oscar nominee John Logan. King and Logan previously collaborated on Martin Scorsese’s “The Aviator.” Lionsgate will distribute the film worldwide.
Jackson’s life and music recently inspired a Broadway show, “Mj,” which takes place as Jackson prepares for the 1992 Dangerous World Tour — a period of time before Jackson was first accused of child sexual abuse.

Over two nights, Janet Jackson’s story is being told in detail — by none other than Jackson herself.
Airing simultaneously on Lifetime and A&e, Janet Jackson is a four-part docuseries that mixes a traditional retelling of a pop star’s life from childhood until now with some juicy revelations; the series straddles the difficult line between rare intimacy from an extremely private public figure and the tight control that comes from letting said figure dictate that narrative. (The first two episodes premiere tonight; the second two air on January 29th.

24kGoldn’s guitar-laced, melodic hip-hop defies a single genre, so it makes sense that his favorite songs are as eclectic as his own music. The 20-year-old rapper submitted his ballot for Rolling Stone’s new 500 Greatest Songs of All Time rankings, voting for a healthy mix of post-2000s hip-hop and R&b with the occasional soul classic and pop anthem. Quentin Tarantino is possibly the most prolific writer/director working in film today. His first feature-length film, Reservoir Dogs, came out back in 1993, and yet the man still manages to surprise us with his hard-hitting dialogue, unconventional humor, and radical social and political commentary. This is a man who serves as a prime example of succeeding as a result of respecting one's elders, as he learns from those great filmmakers who came before him, while still managing to thread his own style through his intricately woven, homage-heavy film résumé.
While the rest of the world toned down its violence and opted for bigger box office, PG-13 sure-things, Tarantino stuck to his guns, consistently making movies for adults and constantly pushing the envelope as to what is allowed onscreen and how to go about displaying such graphic material. Tarantino doesn't give a damn what you think, and that's the reason why...

It all started with Exposed. I’m not sure what brought this 1971 Swedish sexploitation film to the suggestion portion of my Netflix account (presumably the roster of Jess Franco films recently added), but after reading the description, I figured it was worth a shot: “A pretty young teen finds her innocence lost when an unguarded night of revelry yields shameful secrets, and a stack of nude pictures that could ruin her life. But to get her hands on the negatives, she’ll have to expose herself even further.” That is indeed the basic plot of the film, which plays out exactly as one would expect for such fare. But what was unexpected while watching Exposed (also known as the much less enticing Diary of a Rape), was the 21-year-old star of the film. Her name is Christina Lindberg.

The doe-eyed , baby-faced Swedish actress Christina Lindberg is best known for starring as Frigga in the 1974 rape and revenge classic Thriller, A Cruel Picture, which was released in the U.S. under the title They Call Her One Eye. Born in 1950, the voluptuous Ms Lindberg was an incredibly popular nude model in men’s magazines before beginning her movie career, which lasted from about 1970 to 1975. Her debut was the 1971 hit Maid In Sweden followed by more successful “soft-core” sex dramas such as Anita The Swedish Nymph, Exposed, Campus Swingers, Swedish Wildcats, Young Playthings and a dozen or so more. She went to Japan in 1973 and co-starred in Sex And Fury and Sex In Japan. Otherwise all of her movies were made in Sweden where she has lived her entire life. Christina refused to act in the hardcore sex films that began to dominate the industry by the mid-1970’s and...

Set against the foreboding backdrop of Ireland's fog-soaked, rolling moors, Darkness On the Edge of Town blends classic western tropes with the bleak moodiness of noirish murder mysteries. So much of the story is told in the shadows and darkness, which seems to be a reflection of Cleo's perception; all the while, Ryan playfully utilizes cinematic reference points -- such as a couple of allusions to Bo Arne Vibenius' Thriller: A Cruel Picture-- to fully flesh out his vision.

Christina Lindberg, star of the classic exploitation film Thriller: A Cruel Picture, aka They Call Her One-Eye, is back in front of the camera for writer/director Todd Fischer with Cry For Revenge – which sees Lindberg don the eye-patch once more, as the put upon Candy, in another revenge-laden tale.
Also starring Stefanie Vuleta, Christian J. Simpson, Stephanie Fischer, Rodney Cox, Keltee Martin, Mika Kron, David Devita, Ashley Cambron, Shay Gilbert, Erin Belle, Cassie Lynn Young, Michelle Kruse, Lisa Kwon and Ray Shain, the synopsis for Cry For Revenge goes something like this:

From this distance, I can’t see the details of her face—no laugh lines, or any indication that this grindhouse icon has aged 40 years since They Call Her One Eye (a.k.a. Thriller: A Cruel Picture). The “rape-revenge” genre has seen a resurgence as of late due to several remakes of old 70′s grindhouse films. I Spit on Your Grave and Thriller: A Cruel Picture might be two of the more notorious 70′s titles that helped popularize the genre, but there were a lot more besides those that featured revenge fueled women giving men their own form of justice (I would also suggest Ms. 45 and the forgotten 1974 film Act of Vengeance aka Rape Squad). So, even though Girls Against Boys might be loosely inspired by some of these sleazy films from back in the day, this original feature looks to bring something fresh to a genre which recently only saw older films being remade rather than anything new. Ahhh. . . the sweet smell of revenge. I honestly really dig this trailer, and I hope you guys do as well. It premiered at SXSW last year and continued...

Hello, hello! Time for another episode of Mondo Squallido. Today we are looking at a film that you will all probably know and has been reviewed by every sleaze ball. We are of course looking at the exploitation film to end all exploitation films Thriller: A Cruel Picture (They Call Her One Eye, Swedish Vice Girl, Hooker’s Revenge) from 1974, directed by Bo Arne Vibenius. Why am I reviewing this? It’s one of my favourite films of all time and it’s films like this that made me start Mondo Squallido. So sit back, relax and enjoy people…...

Movies like The Big Bad frustrate me. It's clear there's talent involved, but in service of what? The filmmakers obviously had some cool ideas, but they've been stitched together in such a way that we're not provided an emotional context, and by the time we are provided one, it's too late.
Think about it like this: A talented seamstress delivers to you a nicely made winter coat, but with no buttons. The coat is okay and all but, man, it really needs some buttons.
As a werewolf riff on "Little Red Riding Hood," The Big Bad does have a plot, but the tale is told in what is essentially a series of three setpieces that seem more concerned with style than story. I guess these sections could be described as acts,...

Christina Lindberg is probably most famous for her role in the revenge classic Thriller: A Cruel Picture aka They Call Her One Eye, which I recommend you check out if you haven’t already, but she did make other movies. The last of which was Wide Open which Synapse Films are set to release on August 9th.

Taxi driver Paul and his beautiful journalist girlfriend Marianne already have a strained relationship when things get crazier by Paul bringing his drunken father back to their apartment. As tensions rise, they decide to chill out at a wild movie party and things go from bad to worse (for Marianne anyway) when they both wake up in bed together with Marianneâ.s sister, Beryl!

When Troma announced a new film called Father’s Day, fans exclaimed “cool!”, but when they saw who was directing it, they muttered, “who the f*ck is Astron-6?” Well, Astron-6 is an independent film-making collective founded in 2007 by Adam Brooks and Jeremy Gillespie, with other members (Matt Kennedy, Conor Sweeney and Steven Kostanski) coming in after a few too many The Winnipeg Short Film Massacre festivals. The five filmmakers are equal partners as the company produces low-budget, 80′s-centric, genre-bending, independent movies that play on the expectations of the seasoned film-goer and often combine horror with comedy. That’s the gist of it.
Killer Film caught up with Jeremy Gillespie from Astron-6 as they’re frantically trying to finish Father’s Day for Troma Entertainment, to chat about the project and Canadian horror.

For a long time I’ve boasted that if you want to see what’s happening in the neo-grindhouse movement, the best thing you can do is go look for the independent filmmakers and see what they’re up to. Because whether it’s “The Hood Has Eyez,” or “Foxxy Madonna vs. The Black Death,” the odds are it’s better than the entirety of “Grindhouse.” Don’t get me wrong I enjoyed “Grindhouse,” I did. I thought it had a lot of creativity to it but felt more like a throwback than an attempt to mimic the actual grindhouse motif. Because even the most ardent grindhouse fans will tell you that the best grindhouse films have a lot going for them: One is that they’re usually comprised of zero budgets, and two, they’re often tedious. “Thriller: A Cruel Picture” is one of my favorite cult films of all time,...

Karma (Shera Bechard) is, as the title suggests, a sweet girl and to add to her vulnerable appearance (the girl you see on the cover isn’t the girl we’re introduced to at the start of the film) she is also mute.
Upon learning that her sister is dead, most likely murdered, she seeks revenge against the people responsible, stating “I have nothing more to lose”. Her sister had travelled from their home in Russia to Canada with the promise of work there as a housemaid. This was not the case though and the group of gangsters who arranged her travel actually deal in human trafficking and prostitution. Bringing girls from Russia to Canada with the promise of housemaid jobs they coerce them into working as strippers and prostitutes and get them hooked on drugs.
Infiltrating the group of gangsters Karma begins taking them out one-by-one as she exacts bloody and brutal vengeance.

A Serbian Film opens with a scene that effectively sets up one of the main recurring themes in the film and also gives the audience a small taste of the uncomfortable and increasingly horrified feeling they are going to experience throughout the 100 minute running time. The film opens on a porn scene which a young boy is watching on video and into the room walks the star of the scene which happens to be the small boy’s father, Milos (Srdjan Todorovic). This uncomfortable but almost amusing Solondz-esque scene foreshadows a lot of the more disturbing scenes later in the film as the it becomes far more disturbing and horrific with scenes that mix children and sex in increasingly shocking ways.
Milos at this point is struggling. Having quit his somewhat lucrative career in the porn industry he does not have the money to support his wife and son but...

I know you sit there reading these reviews, and you think, “My gods, this woman will watch anything.” And you know, for the most part, you’d be right. My life is equal parts Lucio Fulci and William Girdler, and I do have that soft spot in my heart for Steel Magnolias. But now and then I come across a film that skeeves me out so badly that I turn away from it and its entire subgenre.
Such was the case when I first saw The Last House on the Left. Wes Craven’s 1972 film assaulted my sanity. After viewing it, I had the impulse to never watch another film for fear it might break my brain like this one did. Instead I settled for vowing to never ever watch another rape revenge film.

Rarely has half a year's wait been so richly rewarded. Early in August 2009 Jack Stevenson had promised a review copy of his forthcoming book "Scandinavian Blue," to be published by McFarland & Company, and dealing with a highly Ferronian subject: "The Erotic Cinema of Sweden and Denmark in the 1960s and 1970s." Still, I had nearly forgotten about it, when it finally arrived this March: But whatever the reasons for the delay, I'm sure they were good. Because as it turns out, Stevenson's book is not just an exhaustive and long-overdue study of a chapter in film history that by now mostly lives as a cliché of semi-trashy sixties liberation memorabilia, but doubles as one of the most timely political essays around.

There is a certain kind of character often found in genre B movies and she is the ass kicking, large chested, confident woman. The most iconic example of this is probably Tura Satana’s character, Varla, in Russ Meyer’s Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! Female characters like Varla may appear on the surface to be little more than titillation for a predominantly male audience in films that are generally grouped under the banner of ‘exploitation’ but the sexual politics at play and the underlying subtexts are more complex than this simplistic assessment. One only needs take a dip in the vast ocean of femminist and post-femminist critiques of these films and their characters to realise that they have a lot more to offer than mere titillation.
Following in this, I would say, grand tradition comes Bitch Slap, directed by Rick Jacobson. Although the film does not perhaps reach the heights...

Before our next Butt-Numb-a-Thon (Bnat) feature and apropos to nothing other than the fact they were there for their own guest appearance at a Slammin' Salmon screening, the Broken Lizard guys had a beer-drinking contest with the Ain't it Cool Newswriters. The Lizards won, with appropriate comedic timing.

If I were asked to put together the perfect man night, by whom I don't know, it would inevitably involve Jack Daniels, local Austin beef ribs the size of a cruise ship, and a 70's revenge film. I love the ever-living hell out of movies like Death Wish, Lady Snowblood, Get Carter, and Thriller: A Cruel Picture (also known as They Call Her One Eye). The film Taken actually feels like a throwback to the balls-to-the-wall revenge films of the era and I will watch that movie at the drop of a hat (that is, if I really want to take revenge on you for dropping my hat). Sweet Karma, by all rights, should have been something I loved for exactly the same reason. I'm getting ahead of myself. Sweet Karma is the story of a gorgeous, mute girl from Russia whose sister gets lured into the world of sex trafficking. With...

Check out our gallery of 20 Tarantino movie and movie poster faves , our Quentin Tarantino trivia quiz, and our take on the original 1978 Inglorious Bastards. Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds: Playing spot the reference Any time you sit down to watch a movie directed by Quentin Tarantino, you're not just watching that movie, but all of the movies he's ever seen. Let's face it, the guy has never been shy or apologetic about his movie-love. You could say that when Tarantino name-checks some arcane chop socky movie or slyly alludes to a Eurotrash cheapie, he's giving a shout-out to the cognascenti -- his fellow movie geeks -- in the audience. In other words, when you watch a movie by Qt, you're actually watching two movies...

Filmmakers always talk about how awkward it is filming sex scenes. Well guess what? Sometimes it's Equally as awkward watching them! When they're done well, they can be hot, but when placed in the wrong hands, a sex scene can be the worst viewing experience ever. I submit to you that the following 10 films contain some of the most gag inducing sex scenes ever caught on film (excluding pornography of course). Many of the films on this list are included for different reasons; some are brutal, some are awkward, and some are just plain gross. Get ready to have your mind And your genitals blown! These are my picks for the 10 most gag inducing sex scenes. (Caution: Some of the following images may be considered Nsfw.) 10.
