Christopher Reeve’s Superman is most people’s definitive portrayal of the character. Richard Donner successfully balanced the superheroic aspects of the character along with the nerdy charm of his alter ego Clark Kent. The success of the first film led to Reeve returning for three sequels.
Christopher Reeve as Superman in 1978’s Superman
Donner’s Superman has been the benchmark that every other iteration of the character aims to achieve. However, Superman II did not see the return of Donner and many of his intended scenes did not feature in the theatrical film. An interesting but flawed deleted scene featuring Lois and Clark has fans relived that it did make it into the final cut.

We have seen multiple adaptations of Superman in various media franchises, from live-action to video games. However, not a lot of them have received as much acclaim as Superman: The Animated Series did.

A lot of talented actors and designers were also associated with the project back in the 90s. There is almost no one in the world who doesn’t know Superman – one of the most iconic characters in the history of not just comic books, but media in general. Superman began as one of several anthology features in the National Periodical Publications’ comic book Action Comics #1 in June 1938 and in no time, became an iconic character. Interestingly enough, Christopher Reeve was recently featured in an epic DC fan art.

Headed by seasoned filmmaker James Gunn. DC Studios is finally finding its footing back. Gunn’s era at DC is set to start with a reboot of the Superman film series. The filming of what will be the first DC film under Gunn’s supervision Superman, previously titled Superman: Legacy has commenced in Svalbard, Norway.

Filming in the Arctic means that viewers will see Clark Kent in his Fortress of Solitude. All to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his adoptive human family; as the premise suggests. However, the film might share a similarity with Christopher Reeve’s Superman II, from the 80’s. And it might have something to do with the Fortress of Solitude.

Christopher Reeve was initially unsure about landing the role of Superman when he heard that Marlon Brando and Gene Hackman were going to appear in the movie. Since he was not as famous as these actors, he doubted his chances of getting the role. Working with Brando was a big deal at the time. However, in an interview, Reeve revealed that he did not enjoy working with him.
Christopher Reeve in Superman IV: The Quest for Peace (1987)
Christopher Reeve’s career quite literally went skywards with his appearance as the DC superhero Superman in the eponymous 1978 movie. His first professional screen appearance as an actor came with his role as Ben Harper in the 1974 CBS soap opera Love of Life. He did not appear in a Hollywood movie until 1978 when he starred in Gray Lady Down. He once told David Letterman the reason behind the hostility between him and Brando after working in Superman.

James Gunn’s Superman movie is now in production, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t a few more cast members to be announced. THR has reported that Wendell Pierce, best known for his work on The Wire, will play Perry White in Superman, the editor-in-chief of The Daily Planet.
We’ve seen a few actors portray Perry White on the big screen, including Jackie Cooper, who played the role in Superman: The Movie, Superman II, Superman III, and Superman IV: The Quest for Peace. Frank Langella took over the role for Superman Returns, with Laurence Fishburne stepping in for Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Even the most die-hard 007 fans know that James Bond movies don’t always hit. There’s the yellow face of You Only Live Twice, the pigeon double-take in Moonraker, the surfing in Die Another Day. But never has the franchise done worse than when a certain Louisiana police officer bumbles into the otherwise solid Live and Let Die.
Yes, I’m talking about Sheriff J.W. Pepper, a loudmouth distraction who sort of makes sense in the American-set Live and Let Die, but then he somehow also shows up in Thailand to further drag down The Man With the Golden Gun.
Modern viewers meeting the character for the first time today will likely be confused by Pepper’s shtick. But to the viewers of the early 1970s, Pepper not only hit as a funny joke, but he was very much in line with Bond’s history of pop culture Johnny-come-latelyisms.

The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert premiered to a rapturous, midnight-screening reception at Cannes on May 15, 1994. The tart, feel-good comedy follows a trio of Sydney drag queens — Terrence Stamp, Hugo Weaving and Guy Pearce — who travel by bus (that’s Priscilla) to a gig in the Outback, finding their way into hijinks and eye-popping outfits along the way. The film became a crossover sensation and even won an Oscar for its costumes (this despite having a costume budget of approximately $5,000). Its writer-director Stephan Elliott joins THR‘s It Happened in Hollywood podcast this week to reveal all about this making of the comedy classic on the cusp of its 30th birthday. Here are five facinating takeaways from the episode:

The Beatles‘ “Strawberry Fields Forever” is John Lennon’s masterpiece. The Beatle had a hard time remembering the sequence of events that led him to write it. Fascinatingly, Paul McCartney said the tune came out of his rivalry with John — and that it had a special connection to “Penny Lane.”

The book All We Are Saying: The Last Major Interview with John Lennon and Yoko Ono features an interview from 1980. In it, John said he wrote The Beatles’ “Strawberry Fields Forever” while he was filming the comedy film How I Won the War. The film was directed by Richard Lester, who also helmed A Hard Day’s Night and Help!, as well as Superman II and Superman III starring Christopher Reeve. Despite John and Lester’s involvement, How I Won the War is not one of The Beatles’ films.

We look at famous actors as role models, tending to see their personal lives as soap opera, as projection, as aspiration. But the story of Christopher Reeve is different. His life became a parable. It began with the fact that he was Superman — and I don’t just mean that he played Superman. For millions, he fused with that role in a special way. After nearly five decades of comic-book movies, Reeve’s Man of Steel — the chiseled handsome-hawk profile, the fleet muscularity, the helmet of black hair with its forehead curl just so, the true-blue nobility of his eyes — made him the only actor I’ve ever seen play a superhero who truly seemed like a pop god who’d just stepped out of the comic books. He was so perfect that he could have been drawn by Roy Lichtenstein.

Nonfiction filmmaking duo Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui turned heads with their dazzling 2018 fashion doc McQueen, which gracefully walked the line between celebration and sorrow, between the public highs of a brilliant creator of wearable art and the private lows of a man plagued by insurmountable demons. They achieve a comparable balance in their moving new film, Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story, between the iconic movie star and the man whose life was stalled by a tragic accident. The big difference is that unlike Alexander McQueen, Reeve did manage to overcome long days of darkness and despair, living a productive life for his remaining years.

"Raiders of the Lost Ark" starts with Harrison Ford's Indiana Jones venturing into a booby-trapped tomb, defying death at every turn and escaping with the golden idol. Throughout the 1981 adventure epic, Indy finds himself in similarly precarious situations, managing to narrowly escape with his life in each instance. Frankly, filming "Raiders" itself sounds about as perilous.
There's a reason director Steven Spielberg was amazed Ford and his stunt team survived the shoot. He and his crew took several risks when it came to filming the action that could have easily resulted in tragedy, like making Ford run in front of a real 300-pound boulder for his dramatic tomb escape. The star even got his right leg trapped under a plane during the flying-wing fight scene. But Spielberg did have his limits. Ford was prohibited from doing the stunts that were more likely to lead to actual death. Those were reserved for the stunt team,...

Copyright by Warner Bros Over the past four decades, there have been many comic book movies – some great, some not so much. While 1978’s Superman, starring the late great Christopher Reeve, and its sequel Superman II (1980) were a huge success and set the bar high for movies in the genre, there wasn’t much success after that until 1989. That’s when Tim Burton, a young director, was hired to take on the beloved legendary comic book character Batman. Although Burton had directed two previous successful films, Pee-wee’s Big Adventure and Beetlejuice (which starred Michael Keaton), many questioned whether he was the right director for the highly anticipated film. However, Burton proved himself, and Batman is now considered one of the best superhero movies. Interestingly, despite his success with Batman, Burton wasn’t a big comic book fan at the time. In fact, at the time of the film’s release...

Zorro and Expats are the big shows coming to Prime Video in January. The former is what Amazon are calling a “bold reinterpretation” of the classic hero El Zorro for 2024. Starring Miguel Bernardeau as Diego de la Vega and Renata Notni as Lolita Marquez, it’s definitely an intriguing-sounding action-adventure series, with a ten-episode first season based on the iconic character originally created by Johnston McCulley all the way back in 1919.
Meanwhile, upcoming drama series Expats is based on the bestselling 2016 novel The Expatriates by Janice Y. K. Lee, and follows “the vibrant lives of a close-knit expatriate community” in Hong Kong. Nicole Kidman has been known for picking the right kind of shows to lead in the past, so let’s hope this is another banger for the actress, who is also on board as an executive producer here.

At the time of its 1978 release, "Superman" was one of the most expensive films ever made, boasting a $55 million budget. To tell the story of the famous Man of Steel — an out-of-this-world superhero of immense strength that stood for American values — director Richard Donner's film had to be larger-than-life. The colors were vivid, the airborne special effects were (at the time) groundbreaking, and it had an outstanding cast that truly brought these beloved comic book characters to life and treated them as dynamic individuals.

James Gunn’s Son of Jor-El reboot, Superman: Legacy, has cast Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen and Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher.
There’s been a steady trickle of casting news since those strikes finally rumbled to a close a few weeks ago, and it’s clear that James Gunn’s upcoming DC debut, Superman: Legacy, is rapidly taking shape. Clearly wanting to get a move on with Superman: Legacy (not shocking given the ticking clock of its 2025 release), James Gunn has been busy adding new cast members to his next superhero outing, which also carries the burden of launching the big screen vision for his DC Studios. The latest recruits for the film are Skyler Gisondo, who will play Jimmy Olsen, and Sara Sampaio, who is taking the role of Eve Teschmacher (:a[the latter news broken by Deadline]{href='https://deadline.com/2023/11/superman-legacy-sara-sampaio-as-eve-teschmacher-1235632216/' }). In 1978, Richard Donner gave us the first superhero blockbuster with "Superman." Treating its subject matter with reverence and respect, the movie established comic book adaptations not only as crowd pleasing spectacles, but as spaces in which more weighty themes could be explored. Bolstered by the presence of none other than screen legend Marlon Brando in the role of Superman's father, Jor-El, the film was not just a hit, it was a critical success that gave off an air of prestige. Then, things sort of went downhill.
After 1980's "Superman II," each subsequent entry in the franchise seemed to chip away at the respect superhero movies had earned in 1978. It didn't help that Marvel tried its hand at making a comic book adaptation in the form of 1986's historic flop "Howard The Duck." Of course, It would be 22 years before Marvel got their act together with 2008's "Iron Man" — the film...

DC Extended Universe had its ups and downs during the ten years of its existence, and some of the biggest downs were 2016’s ‘Suicide Squad’ and 2017’s ‘Justice League.’ Both of these movies had troublesome productions, and ultimately, they were released with many changes and cuts that were orchestrated by the studio. Even though ‘Suicide Squad’ was undoubtedly a commercial success, the critical response from both critics and audiences was largely negative, even though Margot Robbie’s performance as Harley Quinn was praised, and the movie won the Academy Award for Best Achievement in Makeup and Hairstyling.
Following the theatrical release of 2017’s ‘Justice League,’ many fans started an online campaign, #ReleaseTheSnyderCut, calling the studio to release Zack Snyder’s Director’s Cut, and that gigantic four-hour movie was ultimately released on HBOMax in 2021. Refresh for chart…On the bright side for Independence Day bomb Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, its first five days at the box office of $82M aren’t as bad as Paramount/Skydance’s Terminator Genisys.
That sequel’s launch just prior to July 4, 2015 left a lot of methane in the air with $42.4M in its Wednesday to Sunday. The attempted Arnold Schwarzenegger comeback movie ended its domestic run at $89.7M, and Dial of Destiny will cross that mark before its first week is up.
Comparing July 4th tentpole hits and bombs can be tricky. Since the holiday skips around, sometimes studios launch on a Wednesday, sometimes a Friday so for the box office fanatics, everything is apples-to-oranges. The last time July 4th fell on a Tuesday was 2017 and 2006. In 2017, over the Friday-Tuesday frame, Illumination/Universal’s Despicable Me 3 led with $99M, followed by Sony/MRC’s Baby Driver with $29.97M.

In one week, Warner Bros. Pictures The Flash, directed by Andy Muschietti opens in theaters on June 16.
Ezra Miller reprises their role as Barry Allen in the DC Super Hero’s first-ever standalone feature film. Worlds collide in “The Flash” when Barry uses his superpowers to travel back in time in order to change the events of the past. But when his attempt to save his family inadvertently alters the future, Barry becomes trapped in a reality in which General Zod has returned, threatening annihilation, and there are no Super Heroes to turn to. That is, unless Barry can coax a very different Batman out of retirement and rescue an imprisoned Kryptonian… albeit not the one he’s looking for. Ultimately, to save the world that he is in and return to the future that he knows, Barry’s only hope is to race for his life.

"Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" is filled to the brim with so much superhero action, characters, art styles, and dimension-hopping shenanigans that you might not have even noticed the lack of a signature comic book movie staple: the post-credits scene.
I myself honestly forgot to look out for one, but I think that was because the absolutely brutal cliffhanger left me reeling and I figured that "Aw, c'mon!" feeling was what the filmmakers wanted us to walk out of the theater with.
Turns out I was partially right. In an interview with IndieWire, producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller talked about their original plan for a post-credits scene, and one of the main reasons they nixed it was because it was "hard to beat where we left off." Their original idea for a post-credits scene required a bit of a set-up for the pay-off to work and that further complicated the idea.

I’m an ‘80s baby, so I grew up with Margot Kidder as my Lois Lane, even though I’m not sure that I watched those Superman movies until much later in life. But the first time I saw Margot Kidder, the first time I really took her all in, was sometime in the ‘90s, when I watched 1974’s Black Christmas, the Canadian thriller that many consider to be the first true slasher flick.
I loved her from the very first frame.
Even then, at just over 25, Kidder had her own unique charm.

Norman Reynolds, the two-time Oscar winning production and art designer on various Star Wars and Indiana Jones films who director Steven Spielberg once called the “creative core” of the franchises, has died. He was 89.
LucasFilm Ltd has confirmed his death, first reported by the BBC, which said that Reynolds “died peacefully with his wife Ann and three daughters by his side.”
Spielberg, who first collaborated with Reynolds on 1981’s Raiders of the Lost Ark, said on a statement, “Norman was always smiling with enthusiasm, and there was nothing he couldn’t make work. Joyful and friendly and a massive talent.”
Among Reynolds’ many contributions to the franchises was his sculpting of the iconic golden idol that Harrison Ford’s Indiana Jones attempts to steal during the opening scene of Raiders of the Lost Ark. Reynolds based the idol on an Incan fertility sculpture he’d collected during overseas travels.

While The Beatles are best known for their music, the band also appeared in two movies: A Hard Day’s Night and Help!. Both films are musical comedies that feature the fab four on an adventure bolstered by an excellent soundtrack. Both movies were directed by Richard Lester, who enjoyed a successful film career after directing The Beatles.

"Superman II" is pretty entertaining, but no matter which version you watch, it feels like you're watching an incomplete movie. This can't be blamed on director Richard Donner, whose tribulations with making the movie are almost as infamous as the Christopher Reeve Superman era itself. It's just that a painful domino effect spearheaded by corporate bigwigs essentially doomed the project, even if the final products aren't necessarily bad. It's just that it could have been so much more.
For his part, Donner recognized this. While he sadly passed away in 2021, he had been quite open about the "Superman II" that could have been if his 2006 "Donner Cut" actually embodied his full vision. There were scenes that he couldn't include in that so-called definitive edition because Warner Bros. had destroyed them, but thankfully, he didn't forget about them. It took a lot to bring "Superman" and "Superman II" to the big screen. Director Richard Donner and producer Alexander Salkind didn't get off to the best start, with Donner having to salvage a truly disastrous script that Salkind evidently felt was "perfect." But once "Superman" debuted in 1978, things started looking up. Or so it seemed.
With "Superman," Donner helped invent the modern blockbuster, setting a blueprint for every superhero movie that would follow and breaking box office records in the process. What made "Superman" an even more impressive feat was that during production, Donner had simultaneously shot most of the sequel. "Superman" and "Superman II" were filmed simultaneously, which meant the crew worked from a hefty script that required Donner to film scenes for both movies alongside one another.
Unfortunately, in order to make the "Superman" release date, Donner and co. had to stop filming "Superman II" before it was finished.

It’s difficult to believe in this era of incessant superhero films, but there was a span of 19 years between the last Christopher Reeve Superman film and the next Superman film, 2006’s Superman Returns. The movie served as an unofficial sequel to “Superman II” and, like the first film, featured a newcomer in the dual role of Clark Kent and Superman: Brandon Routh. The similarity of the situations wasn’t lost on Routh, who told us that he spent plenty of time watching Reeve’s movies — and even his audition reels — before shooting began on Superman Returns. Look, up in the sky! It's not a bird or a plane, but it's definitely one heck of a treat for fans of the big blue boy scout superhero. Superman may have experienced a bit of a rocky road in recent DC history on the big screen, despite an actor as capable and charismatic as Henry Cavill leading the action and even with James Gunn's promise that the immensely popular hero will be a "huge priority" moving forward. But even the biggest DC fans would have to admit that there's a certain ineffable charm to the original movies that first made audiences believe that a man could truly fly.

In many successful film franchises, there may be said to be an unspoken "rule of threequels." This rule dictates that the third film in a series is where things begin to unravel. The thinking goes as follows: A film is a hit, establishing a new character or world into cinema. The sequel, banking on the success of the first, will be larger, more exciting, and is often more ambitious. By the third film, however, the filmmakers -- in an effort to outdo film #2 -- either have to ratchet the action up to a near-intolerable levels, or take the action in a "new direction," often with disastrous results. One can see this dynamic at play in "Alien³," "Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines," "Return of the Jedi," "Death Wish 3," "X-Men: The Last Stand," "The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift," "Spider-Man 3," "RoboCop 3," and "Halloween III: Season of the Witch.

In January 2011, Warner Bros. announced (via Deadline) that British actor Henry Cavill had been chosen to star in the studio's latest Superman reboot. At the time, the then-untitled project's director, Zack Snyder, described Cavill as "the perfect choice to don the cape and S shield." Two years later, "Man of Steel" soared into theaters, bringing Kal-El back to the big screen after a seven-year absence and — in the words of Warner Bros. Picture Group president Jeff Robinov — taking a "first step" into a greater DC universe.
In December 2022, Cavill took to Instagram to announce that he would be stepping down as Superman. "My turn to wear the cape has passed," he wrote, "but what Superman stands for never will. It's been a fun ride with you all, onwards and upwards." This optimism belied the true story behind Cavill's Man of Steel, however, who left behind a tarnished legacy of behind-the-scenes drama,...

"Superman Returns" might not be considered the best Superman movie, but in hindsight it really wasn't bad. Its reverence for Richard Donner's 1978 "Superman" film gave it some real charm, which, after two decades of the gritty reboot trend, seems like a much more welcome prospect now than perhaps it did back in 2006. But while it made a decent 391 million, it wasn't enough for Warner Bros. to push ahead with any sequels.
Director Bryan Singer did admit years later that his movie was perhaps overly "nostalgic and romantic." These days Singer's reputation has been pretty much decimated after some truly horrific allegations of sexual assault came to light, but back in the early-aughts he was riding high, having scored hits with "X-Men" and "X2: X-Men United." And when he wasn't churning out popular superhero blockbusters, he was also helping out with the acclaimed TV series "House," on which he served...

When we talk about movies, screenwriters don't get enough credit. Their names are often overlooked while directors are treated as the true auteurs. Maybe part of that stems from the system of Hollywood itself, which tends to leave screenwriters low on the totem pole, with "Mank" even likening Herman J. Mankiewicz — the co-writer of "Citizen Kane" — to a mere "organ grinder's monkey."
Superhero films and other big studio tentpoles with a lot riding on their success can sometimes involve a revolving door of screenwriters, and this has been the case for decades. "Superman: The Movie" had four credited writers, three of whom carried over to the sequel, "Superman II." But one name you won't see credited as a screenwriter in either movie, despite his important writing contributions, is that of Mank's nephew, Tom Mankiewicz.
There's a rather complicated reason for that. For both "Superman" and "Superman II," Tom Mankiewicz did...

Richard Donner's 1978 film "Superman" changed how people thought of comic book films. Before this, we had silly superheroes like Adam West's "Batman" series. It was a blast, but it wasn't a serious take on comics or characters like this. "Superman" really started it all, nabbing three Oscar nominations and winning a Special Achievement Academy Award for Visual Effects. Christopher Reeve played Clark Kent/Kal-El/Superman in his breakout role and starred with the likes of Marlon Brando, Gene Hackman, and Margot Kidder.
Both the 1978 film and 1980's "Superman II" were set to be filmed simultaneously, and after shooting a big chunk of the second film in addition to the first one, Donner ("Lethal Weapon," "The Goonies," "Scrooged") was fired from the production. He stated that he was never given a budget or a schedule for the film and was replaced by Richard Lester, who reshot a lot of...

In 2023, we are living in the age of superhero films. The Marvel Cinematic Universe and the DC Universe, as well as assorted others, have become the dominant form of entertainment these days. Back in the late 1970s, however, superheroes were the stuff of comic books, relegated to the world of camp and kids entertainment. Sure, we'd seen superheroes on TV with shows like "Wonder Woman" and "Batman," with the latter getting a film version as well in 1966, but it was all a bit on the silly side. (This is not a judgment. Campy superheroes are lovely.) Then came the Richard Donner-directed "Superman" in 1978, starring Christopher Reeve in his breakout role.
This was a whole different kind of superhero film. "Superman" wasn't as dark as some of the comic book movies we have now, but it was indeed taken more seriously than anything we'd seen before. The cast included heavy hitters like Marlon Brando,...
