Let’s be honest, what’s your all-time favorite dragon movie? Is it Dragonslayer? Dragonheart? Q: The Winged Serpent? Maybe it’s an animated feature like How to Train Your Dragon or Raya and the Last Dragon? No matter what your answer is, the unpopular opinion remains, Rob Bowman’s 2002 popcorn flick Reign of Fire is one of the most underrated movies featuring the mythic fire-breathing beasts. Never mind the fact that the flick boasts a lowly 39 Metascore and 42% Rotten Tomatoes score, the grim dystopian world-building, excellent visual effects, and big-d*ck swinging performances from Matthew McConaughey and Christian Bale remain a ton of fun to behold. Of course, Reign of Fire had the misfortune of running into the far more potent cinematic behemoth, Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, which largely overshadowed the movie’s mild commercial success and eventually relegated the film into obscurity at worst,...

At Sundance last week, Shaunak Sen’s “All That Breathes” won the Grand Jury World Cinema: Documentary Award. This marks yet another milestone in this relatively new filmmaker’s career. His debut documentary, “Cities of Sleep” (2016) won reaped accolades after its premiere at Dok Leipzig. In 2019, he earned the Sundance Documentary Grant to work on this project – then called “Airborne.” Now, with his finished feature in 2022, Sen walks away from the festival as the only Asian contestant to win a Grand Jury prize this year.
In Sen’s sophomore feature, two Muslim men (Mohammad Saud and Nadeem Shehzad) work on their bird rehabilitation clinic in India. They are specialists in “black kites” – the common birds that populate the Delhi skies. Their dedication to the avians knows no bounds. They swim across inlets to rescue injured animals; hide rodents in their pockets; tirelessly apply for grants to keep operations running. The...

Telluride – Despite her 5’3 frame there is a fire in Felicity Jones that has helped propel her into becoming one of the toughest actresses working in mainstream film. Over the past three years, she’s battled an evil Empire a galaxy far, far away and portrayed the iconic Ruth Bader Ginsberg (name a character braver than the Notorious R.B.G.). In her latest endeavor, Tom Harper’s “The Aeronauts,” which debuted at the 2019 Telluride Film Festival this weekend, she’ll legitimately have you afraid for her personal safety as she dangles from a balloon thousands of feet in the air.

In the upcoming movie Five Feet Apart, a pair of teenagers fall in love, even though they can't be together. Classic romantic movie trope - but this time, the reason they're kept apart isn't teen angst or family rules: it's an incurable genetic disease. If you're wondering what the meaning of the title is, look no further. We've got a crash course for you.
Cystic fibrosis is a genetic disorder that affects the cells in the body that produce the body's secretions, according to the Mayo Clinic. A defective gene causes secretions - such as mucus, sweat, and digestive fluids - to be thick, rather than the thin consistency they're supposed to be. As a result, these secretions start to plug up important pathways in the body, particularly affecting the lungs and pancreas. Because of this, people diagnosed with cystic fibrosis are prone to chronic infections - which is what...

Battlefield V has a lot of room to run, but will it make it to the end of the race?
During the EA Play event at E3 2018, we had the awesome chance of playing Battlefield V and I have to say it was a great experience. With this being my first E3, a lot of people thought that I was going to be overwhelmed. If anything, it was quite the opposite feeling that I had when I walked through the front gate at EA Play. The overall environment of the event was phenomenal, each game had its own station setup and its own theme. Of course with EA there was a huge highlight on all their sports games, but at the back of the event, the two main games that you saw showcased were Anthem and Battlefield V.
Anthem is something that we will talk about soon, but my main...

The film directed by the late Tony Scott featured a quick bit with Jack Black, who at the time no one had a clue who he was. I remember first seeing him in 1993s Airborne. Raise your hand if you've seen that classic gem. It wasn't until The Cable Guy that I even really knew who he was. I sat there going, "Haven't I seen this guy somewhere...

If you search IMDb’s incredibly handy “plot keywords” for the phrase “rollerblading,” only twenty-eight titles pop up, and most of them aren’t even truly concerned with rollerblading as an actual plot element. The number one rated entry is “Skitchin,’” which is actually a video game from 1994. The number two rated entry? The UK’s uproariously funny series “Absolutely Fabulous,” which has absolutely nothing to do with rollerblading. You’ll have to scroll all the way down to the exact middle of the list – entry number 14 – to find Rob Bowman’s Airborne (above 2002’s Rollerball, below an Erik von Detten-starring Disney movie called Brink! about a pack of teens who call themselves “Soul-Skaters” because “Hammy Sad People Skating Together Because You Don’t Get Me, Mom” wasn’t punchy enough), which is an immense cinematic tragedy, simply because Airborne is the best film about rollerblading ever made. It also turns twenty today. There...

Rebellion (15)
(Mathieu Kassovitz, 2011, Fra) Mathieu Kassovitz, Iabe Lapacas, Malik Zidi. 135 mins
Working with a real-life 1980s incident in New Caledonia (not dissimilar to a French Falklands), Kassovitz crafts a thoughtful thriller with no heroes, only good intentions compromised by colonialist mistrust and distant politics. His negotiator is set between a hair-triggered French military and separatist rebels, but with an election back home, not everyone wants a peaceful outcome.
Promised Land (15)
(Gus Van Sant, 2012, Us/UAE) Matt Damon, John Krasinski, Frances McDormand. 107 mins
With fracking as the central concern, this finds it hard to avoid being an "issue movie", but there's some human drama to it. Damon's gas agent comes to an archetypal small town with a buyout in mind, but the locals and their country ways get to him.

Fans of "School of Rock" are probably unaware that Jack Black has re-teamed with the hit family film's director Richard Linklater for another bizarre character comedy. However, this time around, their collaboration is a very different affair: the indie dark comedy "Bernie." The grimly funny tale is based on the true story of Bernie Tiede, a beloved community figure in the small town of Carthage, Texas, who in 1996, confessed to murdering the wealthy and elderly Marjorie Nugent. Bernie's close friendship with the widowed Nugent was a well-documented dysfunctional relationship, and when the crime occurred, it irrevocably changed the tiny Texas community. To bring the story of Bernie to life, Jack Black delivers one of the better performances of his career, making Tiede a unique and sympathetic character, full of bombastic Southern personality. Moviefone sat down with Black to talk about his experiences working on the movie and interacting with the real Bernie Tiede.

Tonight is the season finale of "House" which is a show that I have a troubled relationship with. The first couple seasons I was completely on board and then it became increasingly obvious that rather that the writers had absolutely no intention of having the House character grow or suffer any real consequences for his actions. There was that awful story line with the cop who had it in for him (Tritter?) but that more punished the people around him and rather than abandoning his selfish, destructive ass to the real world, they just gathered the wagons around him tighter. After that I watched less and less as his actions became less and less defensible. I'll drop in for an episode every now or again but more often than not just find myself staring at my TV going "Really?" I'll be tuning in tonight but I doubt I'll find my opinion changed much.

Everybody's favorite cult film podcast, Junk Food Dinner, gets eXXXtreme this week as we skate our way through three Rollerblade™-themed films!
Up first, futuristic switchblade-toting nuns and poorly dubbed cops strap on skates and battle punks and puppets in a post-apocalyptic hell in the amazingly surreal, low-budget straight-to-video exploitation film Roller Blade from 1986 directed by Donald G. Jackson.
Then, a generic young pretty boy from California is forced to move in with his relatives in Cincinnati and prove himself to the locals by taking part in an epic downhill inline skate race in the 1993 teen comedy Airborne, featuring Seth Green and Jack Black.
And finally, Corey Haim and Patricia Arquette team up to take down a gang of rollerblading, drug dealing, white supremacists in the distopian cyber-punk action-drama Prayer of the Rollerboys from 1990.
Also, we have Nerds News, this week's DVD and Blu-Ray releases and much more!

You know that warm, glowing feeling you get when you meet someone who likes the things you like? "You enjoy 'The Wire,' you say? Me too! I was also struck by the compelling layers, the natural performances and the ultimate pay-off of each season. David Simon is truly a genius, a modern day Dickens." It's a nice feeling in this cold, harsh world. But doesn't that warm glow turn to a fiery hot jolt of joy when that shared love is for something truly awful and dumb? As I trundle along life's highways and byways, I find that the people I meet who love the following films earn my immediate and undying (until they kill it) affection. These are people who, like me, filled their ill-spent youth with TBS (my first love), TNT's "Monstervision" (Joe Bob Briggs, call me!) and USA's "Up All Night" (ultimately, too porny for my little eyes). Ah,...

I went through a devastating earthquake break-up between my first and second years of graduate school. One of those "I'm going to be alone forever, no one will ever love me, my life is over, I wish she would die in a tire fire" breakups that Alanis Morrissette based the good part of her music career on. My friends were there for me, and one drove me from Philly to Boston to spend Labor Day weekend. We were both movie buffs, and so we decided to walk up to the Landmark near M.I.T. to go see The Brown Bunny. For those of you who only know it as "Vincent Gallo Videotapes Chloe Sevigny Blowing Him," the rest of the film is basically about a guy falling apart and weeping and painfully struggling with the loss of his girlfriend who he thought had cheated on him. Not exactly the remedy for a broken heart.

Gloucester - The night Sebastian Junger arrived in town, it was a rather mild and cloudless day. There would be need to use the phrase “The Perfect Storm” to hype the writer’s talk and signing at Raleigh’s Quail Ridge Books. It was The Perfect Mild.
This appears to be a rarity in today’s journalism. Anything that happens now gets blamed on “A Perfect Storm” of calamities after Junger’s book about the doomed fishermen. Wall Street meltdown, Bp well disaster and McRib are all given The Perfect Storm treatment. Sadly enough, he does not get a nickel every time it’s said on TV.
This appearance didn’t include tales of the people who put seafood on your table or George Clooney’s pranks. Junger spoke of the men who fight for America in Afghanistan. The Second Platoon, B Company, 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment of the...
