Photo credit: “Shutterstock.AI” The ’90s marked a major turning point for John Travolta. After his iconic Pulp Fiction comeback, he continued his winning streak with films like Face/Off. Directed by John Woo, this action-packed thriller was a recipe for deliciously twisted fun – especially with Travolta and Nicolas Cage swapping faces (and personalities!). Turns out, Travolta had just as much of a blast making the film as we do watching it. In an interview around the time of Face/Off’s release, he dished on his favorite scenes. Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire brought American audiences into the fun schlock that defined a run of the Godzilla movies which is called the “Showa era.” This era is basically what people think of when you bring up Godzilla because it’s all about the giant monster battles. The movies are also usually given an out-there, psychedelic plot that drives the monsters into fighting each other. Godzilla X Kong was a smashing success at the box office and has the studio confident in its upcoming plans for sequels. Legendary’s chairman, Mary Parent, would state, “This (box office) is certainly an exciting result. We are in a good position to continue the journey, but let’s see how Godzilla x Kong unfolds. These are early days, but we are certainly feeling good.“
The director of Godzilla X Kong, Adam Wingard, brought in his trusted writer, Simon Barrett for this installment.

The John Woo identity switch film Face/Off is one of those 90s action movies that is memorable for good and bad reasons. With such a far-out concept and a beautiful excess of mayhem mixed with some fun drama, it’s easy to see why it made a mark the way it did, much more than Woo’s previous American effort, Broken Arrow, which was a more run-of-the-mill action movie. It’s also a film that seems like a one-and-done for the stars, no matter how much Paramount would want to franchise the title.

Face/Off 2 has been on the cards for years – and now it looks as though Nicolas Cage and John Travolta might be back.
Face/Off remains as one of the most high-concept action movies of the 1990s – no small feat considering this was an era when the genre was stuffed to the gills with interesting and inventive movies trying to reframe explosions, fisticuffs and gunfights in new and unique ways.
The first film (in which Nicolas Cage starred opposite John Travolta) remains a stone-cold action classic to this day with its bizarre ‘face switching’ premise only furthering to distinguish it from the deluge of other brilliant haction movies from the same era.
Over the last three or four years, talk has circulated that a sequel to Face/Off is on the cards. John Woo wouldn’t be returning and the film would instead be helmed by Adam Wingard. Wingard’s latest action blockbuster,...

“Scary Movie,” the early-aughts comedy series that lampooned horror movies like “Scream” and “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” is getting rebooted.
Paramount Pictures announced that it is partnering with “Fast and Furious” mega-producer Neal H. Moritz to resurrect the dormant franchise. “Scary Movie” is going into production in the fall of 2024, and should hit theaters in 2025. The series spawned five previous films before running out of gas with the 2013 installment. But horror has continued to be a major force at the box office, with movies like “Five Nights at Freddy’s,” “Smile” and “M3GAN” drawing big crowds. So there’s a lot of new material for the “Scary Movie” team to parody.
“Scary Movie” is also being made as part of the Paramount’s first look partnership with Miramax, the studio behind the film franchise. Miramax will fully finance the production, with Paramount handling distribution. The indie label is...

Another weekend, another win for "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire." The latest entry in the MonsterVerse franchise dipped nearly 61% in its second weekend for a $31.2 million domestic haul. Even with the relatively heavy dip after the movie's impressive opening weekend, it was more than enough to top newcomers "Monkey Man" ($10.1 million) and "The First Omen" ($8.3 million). More importantly, it demonstrated that this franchise is arguably stronger than it's ever been a full decade into its run. Allow me to explain why that is.
Even though it has been in theaters for less than two full weeks, director Adam Wingard's "Godzilla x Kong" has now made $134.5 million domestically to date. That puts it above the total domestic grosses for both 2021's "Godzilla vs. Kong" ($100.9 million) and 2019's "Godzilla: King of the Monsters" ($110.5 million). It's still below 2014's "Godzilla" ($200.6 million) and 2017's "Kong: Skull Island" ($168 million), but that's only for the time being.

The 'Face/Off' sequel is much delayed. The follow-up to the 1997 action blockbuster starring Nicolas Cage and John Travolta has been heavily impacted by last year's writer's strike. The flick's co-writer Adam Wingard told io9: "Almost in the middle of production [on Godzilla x Kong], we were finishing our draft of the script and because both of us were too busy working on other things there was a plan to do a rewrite, and we picked a writer to work on it."And then the writers' strike happened so that delayed things. Right now, that's still inactive, so I think the plan with that one will be that writer will continue working, and whenever that draft is done, Simon [Barrett, co-writer] and I will get it back and we'll take another crack at it."The sci-fi action thriller saw Travolta play FBI agent Sean Archer and Cage terrorist Castor Troy.

Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire director Adam Wingard has revealed that his take on the beloved 1980s cartoon Thundercats is still being developed – one of several high-profile projects he’s attached to.
Adam Wingard is out and about doing the press rounds for Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire which releases here in the UK at the end of this week (29th March). Naturally, one of the questions that Wingard has faced regards the order of his upcoming slate, given that he’s got quite a list of projects to cherry-pick from.
Taking a glance at the projects that Wingard has been publicly attached to over the last couple of years reads like a wish-list for any blockbuster filmmaker with a penchant for action. There’s Thundercats, a long-gestating take on the humanoid warrior cats that were so popular in animated form during the 1980s; there’s a sequel to Face/Off,...

The character of Bishop first appeared in "The Uncanny X-Men" #282 in November 1991. When he gets blasted by a laser beam or radioactive ray, Bishop can absorb the energy into his body and redirect it back at his attacker. He has been a reliable supporting player in X-Men comics ever since 1991. He has also appeared in "X-Men: The Animated Series," and was played by Omar Sy in 2014's "X-Men: Days of Future Past."
Bishop is also, notably, a time traveler. In the lore of "X-Men: The Animated Series," he came to the present (1993) from a dystopian 2055 that had been overrun by mutant-killing Sentinels. Bishop (played by Philip Aiken) aimed to assassinate one of the X-Men, believing that their death will undo the grim future. Luckily, the misunderstanding was cleared up, and a different assassination was prevented. Bishop returned to 2055 after assuming he had repaired the timeline... but nothing had changed. There...

Despite launching his career to fresh heights, neither Nicolas Cage or writer/director Mike Figgis were apparently paid for Leaving Las Vegas.
1995’s Leaving Las Vegas was the film that launched Nicolas Cage’s career into another sphere of fame and opportunity. Playing an alcoholic Hollywood screenwriter opposite Elisabeth Shue earned Cage a Best Actor Oscar, opening up all kinds of new career avenues, not least his incredible run as an action star in the blockbuster triumvirate of Con Air, Face/Off and The Rock.
However, despite being the launchpad for an incredibly successful second act in his career in which Nicolas Cage would shoot to global stardom, the actor has revealed that he was probably never paid for the film. Mike Figgis, the movie’s writer and director had already claimed this on The Hollywood Reporter's It Happened In Hollywood podcast while also adding that he himself had never been paid either.

At the SXSW earlier this week, Nicolas Cage agreed with his Leaving Las Vegas writer-director’s reveal on The Hollywood Reporter‘s It Happened in Hollywood podcast that he was never paid for the movie that won him his best actor Oscar.
Cage, who was in Austin promoting his latest movie, Arcadian, spoke about the unpaid bill with Business Insider, telling the website’s reporter that it it’s likely he was never paid for the Mike Figgis-directed 1995 drama for which he won the best actor Oscar, ushering in a successful second act of his career.
“But I haven’t been thinking about it,” Cage said. “I got to play a part that I absolutely had to play. There was no doubt in my mind that it would be an experience and a great movie. I wasn’t going to stop — whether they paid me or not, I was making the movie.

Before "Wonka" became a box office hit, director Paul King had already carved out plenty of success with the critically acclaimed "Paddington" movies. Based on the beloved series of children's books, "Paddington" and "Paddington 2" are full of delightful, family-friendly humor and big beating hearts that push a wealth of kindness into the world (and they also politely take down British colonialism and xenophobia). While "Paddington" stands with a stellar 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, "Paddington 2" somehow managed to surpass the original and currently sits with a 99% critical rating. That love for the charming sequel was so overwhelming that it seeped into an unlikely project: a Nicolas Cage movie.

A TV series adaptation is now in development, with Legendary’s Godzilla vs. Kong director Adam Wingard heading up the project and producing with his manager Jeremy Platt.

It's a new year, so it's time for a new Blu-ray round-up! Our first of 2024! Things are a little sparse here in at the start of the year, but there's still some great stuff to check out. We have Eli Roth's holiday slasher "Thanksgiving" to carve things up. Also, the fine folks at Kino Lorber have released John Woo's bonkers action extravaganza "Face/Off" on 4K! "Face/Off" is technically a December release, but we're including it now. Speaking of action, we also have a 4K release of Gareth Evans' "The Raid," aka "The Raid: Redemption." Finally, on the non-action movie front, we have the Criterion release of John Sayles' Western neo-noir character drama "Lone Star."
So let's get to it. And remember to keep spinning those discs.

When Nicolas Cage won the Best Actor Oscar in 1995 for his devastating portrayal of a heartbroken alcoholic with a death wish in Mike Figgis' "Leaving Las Vegas," he was 31 years old and soaring into the prime of an already impressive career. He had access to the best screenplays in town and the interest of just about every A-list director. So Cage did what any reasonable movie star would do: he made three of the decade's zaniest blockbuster action movies.
For those of us who fell in love with Cage as the good-hearted punk Randy in Martha Coolidge's lovable 1983 film "Valley Girl," he kind of owed us. Though he's utterly brilliant in "Leaving Las Vegas," Figgis' grimy drama makes "The Lost Weekend" look like "Arthur." It's a brutal, frankly unrewarding ordeal. For close to two hours, we watch Cage's financially/personally ruined screenwriter grimly follow through on his promise to speedily drink himself to death.

While Nicolas Cage is loved by the internet for his many meme material, the actor is equally loved for his genuinely acclaimed acting performances. He has been in some of the most beloved movies of yesteryear, with films like The Rock, Face/Off, Con Air and the National Treasure movies. While Cage has been in movies of varying quality due to his need to pay off some of his notorious expenses, he has been able to maintain his artistic integrity by starring in movies like Pig and the recent Dream Scenario. He is set to be seen in the upcoming Longlegs, which just released a chilling teaser.
It was also those recent movies that had compelled Cage’s famous uncle, Francis Ford Coppola, to give his nephew a shoutout on his Instagram. Coppola posted a picture of Cage’s unrecognizable look as his Dream Scenario character and wrote in the post,...

In a world where superheroes, sequels, horror (thankfully) and anything IP related are king, it seems as though the risqué original thriller has gone by the wayside. Over the past ten years or so you’d be hard pressed to find anything other than The Invisible Man, You Should Have Left, Gerald’s Game, Gone Girl, or Knock, Knock that really fit the mold (albeit with some finagling) and each of those is either tied to popular literature or skews closer to the horror genre.
But the original thriller thrived in the 1990s. Also thriving during this beautiful time in Hollywood were action movies featuring two adversaries face to face on the poster and/or movie cover. Movies like Face/Off, Point Break, Demolition Man, Universal Soldier, and Broken Arrow. 1992’s Unlawful Entry combines both of these elements with two heaping sides of the stalker and slasher horror subgenres. Which is why...

For the first time in modern Vietnam cinema since the establishment of its box office tracking, six local films topped the Vietnam box office in 2023 and combined to capture more than a third of the total box office receipts. This dominating performance by local films is a stark reversal of 2022, when the top local film only placed sixth in the year's overall ranking behind Hollywood and other foreign films.
As 2023 comes to a close, here's a look at the 6 films (in order of box office performance) and the directors who helmed them:
1. Nhà Bà Nữ (The House of No Man)
Directed by Trấn Thành, starring Uyển Ân, Song Luân, and Trấn Thành.
Trấn Thành marks his solo directorial debut with Nhà Bà Nữ (The House of No Man), which unequivocally became the box office champion upon its release during Tết (Lunar New Year). The film stars...

John Woo’s maximalist style and taste for melodrama allowed him to ply his wares in Hollywood with far less friction than usually arises when an Asian auteur attempts to adapt their m.o. to meet American filmmaking demands. Despite issues with the more aggressive oversight of Hollywood execs, his Hard Target and Broken Arrow were both box office successes that, especially in the case of the former, retained a remarkable amount of Woo’s signature aesthetic flourishes and artistic philosophy. But the purest and maddest canvas on which he painted one of his American yarns remains Face/Off, a film that magnifies the over-the-top methods of its lead actors as adroitly as his Heroic Bloodshed films reflected the practiced cool of Chow Yun-fat.

2023 was a surprisingly great year for several movie genres, but action fans in particular had a bounty of terrific options to choose from. When it came time for a few of the /Film writers and editors to get together and rank our favorites, our individual lists were overflowing with great titles. But in accordance with the unwritten laws/demands of the Internet, we were forced to make some tough decisions, whittle our choices down to a collective ten films, and rank them accordingly.
As is often the case, the movies that didn't make this list could easily comprise an impressive list of their own. When the inventive and propulsive "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse," the energetic and comedic "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem," the brutal and pulpy "Sisu," the touching and hilarious "Polite Society," and the moody and subversive "The Killer" get relegated to honorable mentions, it becomes clear how...

Silent Night, the latest film from the legendary John Woo, reached theatres on December 1st (you can read our review at This Link) – and while Woo was doing the press rounds for his new movie, The Hollywood Reporter took the opportunity to ask him about a couple revivals of his older works: the remake of his 1989 film The Killer, which Woo is directing himself, and the sequel to his 1997 film Face/Off, which is set to be directed by Godzilla vs. Kong‘s Adam Wingard.
Asked why he has decided to remake his own film with the new take on The Killer (which went into production this past summer), Woo said, “Well, the project was in the works for many years, but it was hard to find a director to direct it. So when I came back [to the States], we got support from Universal, and they asked me to do it. So I...

Nicolas Cage did not know writer-director Kristoffer Borgli from Adam when he opened the first page of Dream Scenario. A Norwegian filmmaker with only one other feature under his belt—2022’s Sick of Myself, which also is in Norwegian—Borgli is an exceedingly new voice in cinema, but one Cage was keyed into recognizing as promising because the screenplay had been sent by Ari Aster. As it turns out, the director behind Hereditary and Midsommar was producing this mysterious new dark comedy called Dream Scenario, and he thought Cage would respond to a story about a mild mannered college professor who one day discovers everyone in the world is dreaming about him.
Cage couldn’t put it down. Despite the project being an intensely surrealist comedy wherein our hero, Paul Matthews, learns his daughters, his students, and even folks on the other side of the Atlantic are dreaming of him—be it as a goof,...

Silent Night Movie Review Rating:
Star Cast: Joel Kinnaman, Kid Cudi, Harold Torres, and Catalina Sandino Moreno
Director: John Woo
Silent Night Movie Review(Photo Credit –IMDb)
What’s Good: It is fantastic to see John Woo back doing films in the West. His experience in making action scenes still shows under all the gimmicks.
What’s Bad: The movie relies too much on a strange narrative gimmick that only hinders its enjoyment and makes the entire experience quite strange and boring.
Loo Break: Sadly, there are several. The movie’s gimmick makes certain scenes feel completely unnecessary.
Watch or Not?: There are better John Woo films out there to watch. Sadly, Silent Night doesn’t make the cut as an easy recommendation.
Language: English
Available On: Cinemas

Nicolas Cage doesn’t really care if you know he’s related to Francis Ford Coppola.
The actor, best known for his lively performances in flicks such as Con Air and Face/Off, famously changed his name from Nicolas Coppola to Nicolas Cage at the start of his career. He told a boisterous audience this afternoon at the Red Sea Film Festival in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, that he made the switch for two reasons.
The first appeared to be what Cage described as some early career on-set bullying.
“I did a little movie called Fast Times at Ridgemont High,” Cage said. “When I was on set, some of the other actors couldn’t believe I had talent because I was Coppola’s nephew. They would quote lines from Apocalypse Now and change lines to ‘I love the smell of Nicholas in the mornings instead of napalm in the morning.’”

It’s Face/Off meets Freaky Friday when a homicide detective swaps bodies with a serial killer in Devils, the critically acclaimed body-swap psychological thriller that’s now on VOD and streaming on Screambox.
The gripping psychological thriller, written and directed by Kim Jae-hoon, blurs revenge and morality where an unwavering detective takes on a serial killer.
The film’s suspense and psychological intensity are reminiscent of the classic thriller Face/Off infused with a horror twist and gory brutality.
“Devils follows the story of Jae-hwan, a determined homicide detective assigned to take down a ring of serial killers terrorizing the city. The case becomes deeply personal for him as one of the victims is his own brother-in-law. When the detective and the murderer finally collide, an unexpected turn of events leaves Jae-hwan waking up in the hospital – trapped in the body of the very killer he sought to apprehend. Yesterday, we published an article detailing Nicolas Cage’s plans to turn away from film acting after his next few movies, a notion he doubled down on in a new interview with Uproxx’s Mike Ryan. But Cage also opened up about potentially getting back in the game should an enjoyable project arise. “I’m not saying no entirely. I’m saying if something came along that I thought had some pop to it, some spark to it, that maybe could be fun for folks to revisit, like a Face/Off 2 or Ghost Rider, that’s another conversation.”
It turns out that Cage has a particular soft spot for Face/Off, mentioning that he hasn’t seen director John Woo, who was once his close friend, in a long time. “Well, John… I haven’t spoken to him in a very long time, but at one time we were pretty close.

Nicolas Cage wants to do TV. In fact, after another few movies, the Oscar-winning actor said in a recent interview that he only wants to do TV — unless something very special or a revisitation of one of his favorite big-screen roles, like sequels to Face/Off or Ghost Rider, emerges.
Cage said that he does not watch TV much, but his son finally convinced him to catch Breaking Bad last year. He called the series “magnificent,” and said it got him interested in doing quality work episodically.
“I do want to explore other formats,” Cage told Uproxx. “I am very interested in immersion streaming with episodic television. I have seen things that can be done now with characters and the time they’re given to express themselves. I saw Bryan Cranston stare at a suitcase for an hour on one episode of Breaking Bad. We don’t have time to do that in a feature film,...

Let's be blunt: The current state of action cinema worldwide would not be what it is today without the work of director John Woo. While Woo is hardly the only influential filmmaker when it comes to action movies, he's undeniably one of the biggest figures in shaping the genre. Like any great auteur, Woo's style was developed film by film, working his way through his kung-fu features at Golden Harvest in Hong Kong and adding in more experimental techniques (gleaned from the likes of prior filmmakers such as Sam Peckinpah) until he ended up at his signature magnum opus, 1986's "A Better Tomorrow" and its style, which was dubbed "heroic bloodshed."
Over the next several years in Hong Kong and then through to his transition into Hollywood, Woo expanded his "heroic bloodshed" style, peppering in other influences along the way from some of his other favorite filmmakers like Jean-Pierre Melville and Alfred Hitchcock.

From The Killer’s church shootout to Mission: Impossible 2’s motorcycle chase, John Woo’s over-the-top action style has been the stuff of legend for many decades, but now, at 77, the Hong Kong filmmaker has changed up his approach, beginning with the virtually dialogue-free revenge thriller Silent Night.
The Joel Kinnaman-led actioner is Woo’s first American film in two decades, an absence he chalks up to no longer being sent quality scripts. On its surface, Silent Night is a classic tale of vengeance, as Kinnaman’s Brian Godlock stops at nothing to avenge the gang-related death of his 7-year-old son. The quest is made all the more intriguing by Godlock’s inability to speak, having suffered a life-altering injury during his failed attempt to go after the offending gang in the immediate aftermath of his son’s death.

Queen Bey got the weekend off to a hot start.
“Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé,” a concert film written, directed and produced by the singer, earned $5.1 million in previews on Thursday, beating expectations. The film is projected to earn between $17 million to $20 million in its opening weekend from approximately 2,539 domestic locations. But “Renaissance” is a global event, with the concert movie debuting in 94 international territories — a collection of markets that includes the U.K., South Africa and Australia. Globally, the film should bring in between $30 million to $40 million.
It’s a solid result even if it can’t match the year’s other notable concert film, Taylor Swift’s “The Eras Tour,” which opened with $92 million domestically last October. That movie has gone on to earn $250 million worldwide. Both artists opted not to partner with a major studio to release their film in theaters. Instead, they’ve joined forces with AMC Theatres,...

For action fans who came of age in the 1980s and 1990s, the arrival of a new John Woo movie was not just a cinematic event but a spiritual catharsis. No one was making films the way he was, creating exquisitely orchestrated ballets of melodrama and violence influenced in equal amounts by Sam Peckinpah and Douglas Sirk but not beholden to either. Hong Kong imports like “A Better Tomorrow,” “The Killer,” and “Hard Boiled” set a new bar for what audiences could demand in terms of kinetic thrills, and when Woo moved to America, fans wondered if his voice would survive the trip. Luckily, he changed Hollywood more than Hollywood changed him, as he infused “Face/Off,” “Mission Impossible 2,” and other studio assignments with his signature dynamism and influenced a generation of action filmmakers from Quentin Tarantino to Robert Rodriguez.

He's back.
John Woo, one of the true maestros of action cinema, has returned to U.S. shores after 20 years to make another Hollywood movie. He left to make movies in Asia after the 2003 dud "Paycheck," but two decades later, he's at the helm of the Christmas-set thriller "Silent Night," starring "For All Mankind" actor Joel Kinnaman. This weekend sees an iconic figure of entertainment return to grace our movie theaters with the presence of their sheer awesomeness. But enough about John Woo returning to American theaters with his Christmas themed revenge tale Silent Night, we are also getting the Beyoncé concert film/ documentary Renaissance: A Film By Beyoncé.
Coming off the success of Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, which has amassed a domestic record (for a concert film) $178.2 million comes the second concert film to be released directly by AMC Theaters, bypassing a major studio for its release.
Unlike The Eras Tour Movie, which was a straight up concert film, Renaissance is more of a hybrid concert film/ documentary, in the vein of Michael Jackson’s This Is It, that weaves together background footage of the tour with the actual concert. The opening minutes of Silent Night promise something fun. There’s Joel Kinnaman, dressed in a Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer sweater, sprinting in super-slow-motion through his neighborhood’s back alleys. There are the warring Mexican gang members he’s chasing, spraying bullets at each other as they rampage through residential streets. There’s the glittery soundtrack of a music box filtering out the distant sirens and tire-screeching. And then there’s a red balloon, floating above the chaos, doing its best Fritz Lang impression. It’s gloriously, ludicrously over-the-top.
But who are we kidding? Nobody does melodrama better than John Woo, returning to Hollywood after a 20-year hiatus (his last American movie was 2003’s Paycheck) to deliver some of his signature thrills and recapture the theatrical style that made him one of the world’s most influential directors. If John Woo has ever heard the phrase ‘less is more’, this wonderfully insane 1997 film about two men stealing each other’s faces suggests he never took it to heart

It’s beginning to feel a lot like Christmas: legendary Hong Kong director John Woo has a new film coming out in December – Silent Night – and any movie from the Goat of action flicks is a real gift. So why not revisit the movie that is arguably the most popular, and inarguably the most bonkers, of his career?
Face/Off sees John Travolta as FBI agent Sean Archer, who is tracking the notorious terrorist Castor Troy, played by Nicolas Cage. But when Troy tries to kill him and kills Archer’s son instead, Archer becomes consumed by revenge. Six years later, he catches up to Castor and in the ensuing chaos puts him in a coma.

John Woo’s Silent Night is skipping cinemas in the UK and will instead premiere on Sky Cinema on Christmas Eve.
Though John Woo is one of the most revered action directors in history due to his astonishing ‘heroic bloodshed’ sequences in films like A Better Tomorrow, Hard Boiled and The Killer, his Hollywood filmography is an eclectic mix. There are huge hits like Mission: Impossible II and Face/Off, and underrated films like Hard Target and Broken Arrow. Then there’s Paycheck, which was reviled by audiences and critics, even if some people don’t mind if that much.
Silent Night, meanwhile, looks set to be a return to form, as a wordless protagonist goes on a mission of vengeance. We’ve been following the progress of the film for a while, and we’re excited to see it. It’s just we’re not going to be able to see it,...

It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a film as unrelentingly mean and ugly as Silent Night. Action maestro John Woo’s return to Hollywood filmmaking after twenty years away is one of the year’s most stunning disappointments, a cruel slog with plenty of bullets and blood but none of the soul for which Woo was once famous.
Joel Kinnaman is Brian Godlock, a man whose young son was struck and killed by a stray bullet from a gang fight on Christmas Day in the front yard of their California home. In the film’s opening sequence, Godlock chases the gang members down but is shot in the throat and left for dead. He doesn’t die, but his voice is stolen from him. Over the course of the year, the formerly mild-mannered electrician bulks up and turns himself into a lethal weapon, ready to go...

If John Woo had permitted the characters in “Silent Night” to speak, chances are that audiences would laugh them off the screen. Instead, the director gets right down to business, opening with a wordless chase sequence in which a sad dad (Joel Kinnaman) in a corny Christmas sweater sprints after a pair of speeding cars. Inside the vehicles, bad men blast machine guns, while our nameless hero is armed with … just his wits and the jingle bell around his neck.
By the time this guy — identified as Brian Godlock in the end credits — catches up to the gang members who murdered his son, “Silent Night” has already demonstrated that Woo has no intention of letting logic get in his way. And why should we expect any different from the director of “Face/Off,” whose title-says-it-all gimmick had two rivals swapping identities via plastic surgery? The movie dedicates a lot of time...
