You have probably seen Christopher Nolan's Inception more than once, discussed Ari Aster's Midsommar with friends, rewatched Ridley Scott's Alien, and are now on the lookout for new discoveries, wondering where to find the gems of modern cinema.
In such cases, not the most talked about, but no less exciting projects come to the rescue.

Tarsem Singh, a master of striking productions that transport viewers into worlds that are unprecedented in their beauty and danger, made one of the most amazing films in 2006 that can be described as a "story within a story."
The main character ends up in a hospital where he meets a little girl who helps a man cope with pain. And while the Black Widow prequel movie wasn’t one of Marvel’s best or most lucrative movies, it did conclude the story of Natasha Romanoff in the MCU, and introduced us to some new characters we are going to see in some of the upcoming movies. But, this article won’t be about the movie itself, as it is going to be about the complex creative process that led to the final product, as IndieWire had a talk with one of the story co-writers Ned Benson, who joined the production at a later date, rewriting the original pitch, but even his version did not end up being the final one.
Ned Benson had a short talk with IndieWire about a potential return to the MCU, seeing how his original collaboration with the large cinematic project didn’t turn out to be the best, but it seems that the filmmaker...

Deadline reports a new sports documentary is being planned for kickboxing champion and martial arts movie star Benny “The Jet” Urquidez. The names associated with the production almost seems like a bingo announcer called out randomly drawn names from my favorite childhood movies. Keanu Reeves, who himself is no stranger to the martial arts world and action genre, has partnered with Fisher Stevens, who is known for projects like Short Circuit 1 & 2 and Hackers, to produce the documentary on Urquidez, whom I’ve talked about before on my Dragons Forever retrospective.
The documentary, which is titled The Jet, is currently in production with the Emmy-nominated sports documentary editor turned filmmaker, Jennifer Tiexiera, directing the film. Tiexiera has most recently also directed a three-part series for HBO called Unveiled: Surviving La Luz del Mundo, which has also recently been nominated for an Emmy in the catagory of Outstanding Crime and Justice Documentary.

Mira Sorvino confirms that she and Lisa Kudrow are finalising contracts for Romy And Michele’s High School Reunion 2. More here.
It was all the way back in 1997 that out of the blue, Hollywood gave us a pair of impressive high school reunion movies. First up, in the UK at least, was Grosse Pointe Blank, starring John Cusack. That had the better reviews and initial response at the time. Yet since then, it’s Romy And Michele’s High School Reunion that’s come far more to the fore.
Starring Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow, and directed by David Mirkin, the original film – as discussed in an old Film Stories podcast episode here – was penned by Robin Schiff. She based it on a 1988 stage production called Ladies Room, and it was revealed a little while back that she was cooking up a Romy And Michele’s High School Reunion 2.

San Marcos, Calif – There was an Alan Arkin for every generation. Post World War Two adults may have seen him at Chicago’s “The Second City.” Baby Boomers remember his films “Wait Until Dark” and “The Russians Are Coming, The Russians are Coming” and Gen X saw him in “The In-Laws”, “Glengarry Glen Ross” and his Oscar winning turn in “Little Miss Sunshine.” He even did a Netflix series, “The Kominsky Method.” For every generation, for every form of acting, there was Alan Arkin. He passed away on June 29th, 2023, at the age of 89.
Alan Wolf Arkin was born in Brooklyn, and started acting at age 10. After not graduating from two colleges he joined The Second City in 1960 Chicago, one year after it was founded. His feature film debut was the musical “Calypso Heat Wave” (1957), he debuted on Broadway in a Second City revue and did episodic TV during the 1960s.

The first time I saw Alan Arkin onscreen, he scared the hell out of me.
The veteran Academy Award-winning actor, who died Thursday at the age of 89, is best known these days for his wittily avuncular presence in films like Little Miss Sunshine and such television shows as The Kominsky Method, his last great acting role. But my first exposure to him came in middle school, where for some inexplicable reason the powers that be decided that treating the entire student body to a screening of the film Wait Until Dark was a good idea.
In that classic 1967 thriller, Arkin played Harry Roat, the most sadistic member of a trio of villains terrorizing a blind Audrey Hepburn because they think she possesses a doll filled with heroin. In a climactic scene set in almost near-darkness, a seemingly dead Roat suddenly jumps into the frame and grabs Hepburn by the leg.

Actor and comedian Dan Aykroyd has had a long and steady career ever since he first began doing improvisational comedy with the famed Second City troupe in both their Chicago and Toronto theaters.
Fame came to Aykoyd when he was hired for what seemed like a low expectations comedy/variety show NBC was beginning for late Saturday evenings. “Saturday Night Live” became a bit of a phenomenon launching all the original “Not Ready for Prime Time Players” (as the cast was called) into stardom. Aykroyd along with Chevy Chase, John Belushi, Gilda Radner, Jane Curtin, Laraine Newman and Garrett Morris suddenly found themselves among the most talked about television stars working in the business.
Aykroyd and Belushi became especially close friends during the series run and began working in films together such as “Neighbors,” “The Blues Brothers” and potentially “Ghostbusters,” but Belushi’s overdose at the age of 33 caused Bill Murray...

Martin McDonagh’s cult hit man feature comes to 4K looking extremely good: fans of low-key black humor and droll sentimentality, kinda-like-the-Coens, kinda-like-Tarantino, love this picture. Cute characterizations from Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson & Ralph Fiennes bring light to a ‘killers with a heart’ story. It keeps us watching to see what happens next, that’s for sure. And when’s the last time that 13th century European art and architecture figured so heavily in a mob saga?

The tale of the young, star-crossed lovers known as "Romeo & Juliet" has been told and retold for centuries, but Hulu and 20th Century Studios have a whole new perspective to bring to the table. In a comedic twist on William Shakespeare's classic romantic tragedy, the tale of "Romeo & Juliet" is being retold through the lens of Rosaline, the gal Romeo was exclusively dating before he ran into Juliet at a party and completely turned his entire life (and family) upside down. Rosaline is devastated when she learns that her boyfriend has left her for someone new, and goes on a mission to break the two of them up and win back the man of her dreams.
"Rosaline" looks to be taking the anachronistic approach of Baz Luhrmann's "Romeo + Juliet" and inverting it, with classic period garb and set dressings injected with contemporary language and sensibilities.

There’s a scene in Bullet Train that perfectly illustrates what a misfire this supposed action comedy is. A bunch of rival assassins with overlapping and clashing objectives are all on the same overnight high-speed train from Tokyo to Kyoto. Two of them — Brad Pitt’s “Ladybug” and Brian Tyree Henry’s “Lemon” — find themselves in a face-to-face encounter in the quiet car. Naturally, the confrontation turns violent. In a movie that actual took action comedy seriously, this might have been hilarious: How do you beat someone up, maybe even kill them, without making any noise? But here, after the barest nod to the need for silence, rowdy fisticuffs commence, and the only concession to comedy — allegedly — is Pitt snapping at the civilian who shushes them to “eat a bag of dicks”… and then apologizing, because, you see, he’s on a journey to be a better person.

Scientific research tells us that nearly all of the cells in the human body are renewed every seven years. Personally, I like to think that explains the “seven-year itch,” the phenomenon by which so many of us change jobs, friends and such on a predictable cycle: because you’re literally not the same person anymore.
It’s been eight years since Albee (Amber Midthunder) and Walker (Taylor Gray) got married, and their relationship is running on fumes. A surprisingly serious-minded drama from “Hot Tub Time Machine” helmer Steve Pink (who co-wrote Gen X John Cusack romances “Grosse Pointe Blank” and “High Fidelity”), no-frills indie “The Wheel” follows this couple on a weekend retreat to a remote Airbnb, where the pair plan to hash things out once and for all.
Walker has brought along a self-help book, “Seven Questions to Save Your Marriage.” Albee says she’s game, but seldom looks away from her iPhone.

It is hard to imagine anyone but Patrick Stewart playing the role of Jean-Luc Picard on "Star Trek: The Next Generation." Through the entire run of the series, he was the clear-thinking, soothing head of the starship Enterprise crew, and the absolute moral center of the entire franchise. "Star Trek: The Next Generation" could have looked very different, though. According to a casting memo from April 13, 1987, other actors were up for the role.
Casting nets are wide, of course. Other names up for the role of Picard included Mitchell Ryan ("Grosse Pointe Blank"), Roy Thinnes ("The X-Files"), Yaphet Kotto ("Alien"), and Patrick Bauchau...

You have to keep your eye out for it because it is an action sequence with a lot of quick cuts, but there’s one rather peculiar object in the background of the convenience store shoot-out in “Grosse Pointe Blank” (which hit theaters 25 years ago). The items shot up and blown apart by contract killer Martin Blank (John Cusack) and the man who’s trying to kill him (Benny Urquidez) are your typical 7-11 fare: potato chips, sodas, sports drinks, breakfast cereals.

Exclusive: Jonathan Glickman has launched Panoramic Media, a multi-platform content venture. The former MGM Motion Picture Group President launches with investment from Gary Barber, Spyglass Media Group, Eagle Pictures, Lantern Entertainment, Pinky Promise and United Talent Agency. The new capital will fund IP creation across film, television, podcast and digital platforms. Glickman, founder and CEO of the new venture, spent the last two years putting together the funding, a creative team and projects that will be unfurled over time. The new company will expand upon Glickman’s existing slate of projects set up at Netflix, Amazon, MGM, Warner Media, Paramount, and MRC, as well as a joint podcast venture with iHeartMedia.

Here are two questions I have never asked myself: (1) "Where is my wife?" (2) "Did my father have something to do with her disappearance?" When you are Emile Hirsch and your father is John Cusack, though, and you find yourself in a new trailer for a movie called Pursuit, those questions become entirely relevant. Jake Manley, Elizabeth Ludlow and William Katt also star; Brian Skiba directed. Per the official verbiage: "John Cusack (Grosse Pointe Blank) and Emile Hirsch (Into the Wild) star in this action thriller about a tough cop's hunt for an even tougher criminal. "Detective Breslin crosses paths with Calloway (Hirsch), a ruthless hacker desperate to find his wife, who has been kidnapped by a drug cartel. When Calloway escapes police custody,...

September usually means the beginning of the traditional fall TV season. As such, Hulu’s list of new releases for September 2021 contains some impressive TV swings.
For starters, all of ABC and Fox’s (both now united under the Disney banner alongside Hulu) fall season offerings will be made available to stream on Hulu the next day. More impressively, however, two FX on Hulu originals make their way to the streaming world this month.
The first is the long-awaited adaptation of the classic comic Y: The Last Man. The story of a virus that destroys every mammal with a Y-chromosome (save for one escape artist and his monkey) is set to premiere on September 13. Shortly after that, the B.J. Novak-produced anthology series The Premise arrives on September 16. Even those who are fatigued from timely anthology concepts will want to check this one out.

Hey, remember when they released that picture of the CGI movie Sonic the Hedgehog and it was so freakish and unnerving that animators had to work overtime to fix it? Anywho, Sonic the Hedgehog is coming to Hulu this month.
The heroic blue hedgehog who just wants to go fast is far from the only exciting new film or TV show coming to Hulu in February 2021. The library titles are unusually packed this month. In addition to Sonic, the sublimely goofy Mars Attacks!, 2020 horror film Possessor, and the first six Star Trek films all arrive on Feb. 1. Later on in the month are Antebellum (Feb. 5) and Nomadland (Feb. 19).
It’s a good thing that the library titles are strong because Hulu isn’t brining many originals of note to the table in February 2021. Into the Dark continues on its spooky mission with the Valentine-centric Tentacles dropping on Feb. 12. That will...

May isn’t quite summer yet but it is usually time that the networks start wrapping up their newest shows and preparing for a relatively fallow summer period. Since HBO isn’t a network, it has no such business model. But May sees the winding down of some HBO blockbusters all the same.
While there are some notable new releases for HBO in May 2020, the bigger story might be the things that are ending. Westworld concludes its third season on May 3 while new series Run wraps up on May 24. Thankfully the film losses in May aren’t too bad for HBO, unless the Agent Cody Banks saga drives a lot of traffic.
The most notable TV premiere in May is I Know This Much is True, a book adaptation starring Mark Ruffalo. This is a very bleak story coming along at a bleak time in history but perhaps those two things will cancel out.

On July 1, 2019, actor and comedian Dan Aykroyd will celebrate his 67th birthday as his native Canada celebrates its 152nd. The actor has had a long and steady career ever since he first began doing improvisational comedy with the famed Second City troupe in both their Chicago and Toronto theaters.
Actress Barbara Harris, who capped Robert Altman’s masterpiece Nashville with a strangely haunting musical performance, won a Tony Award for 1967’s The Apple Tree and co-founded Chicago’s Second City comedy troupe, died today in Scottsdale, Arizona. She was 83.
The cause of death was reported by the Chicago Sun Times as lung cancer.
Harris was nominated for a supporting actress Oscar for 1971’s Who is Harry Kellerman and Why Is He Saying Those Terrible Things About Me?, but might best be remembered by children of the era for her role in 1976’s original Freaky Friday, Disney’s body-switch comedy in which Harris and a young Jodie Foster did the switching.
That same year, Harris appeared in Alfred Hitchcock’s dark comedy Family Plot, an indication of her range. Later audiences would see her as the tender-hearted, understanding mother in Peggy Sue Got Married or appearing alongside John Cusack and...

Barbara Harris, an Oscar-nominated actress who made memorable turns in such classics as “Nashville,” the original “Freaky Friday” and “Grosse Pointe Blank,” died Tuesday of lung cancer at age 83, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.
Harris, who sang the opening number in the very first show at Chicago’s famed Second City in 1959, had a long and successful career in both theater and the movies.
She won a Tony Award in 1967 for her lead performance in the musical “The Apple Tree” opposite a young Alan Alda, and an Oscar nomination playing a vulnerable aspiring actress in the 1971 comedic drama “Who Is Harry Kellerman and Why Is He Saying Those Terrible Things About Me?”

We salute the highs, lows and plain hilarious in the world of the movie tagline...
Hanging proudly on the wall of a room in my house where I escape to watch films and play videogames (a room that you can call anything you like, but – for the love of all that is decent – must not be referred to as a ‘man cave’) is a framed poster for a movie I have never seen. A movie that I shall probably never see.
It takes pride of place nestled between The Shining, which is the wife’s joint favourite film ever (tied with Overboard), and Batman ’89. Why? Because it has arguably the single greatest tagline ever plastered over a film advertisement:
"Unwittingly, he trained a dolphin to kill the president of the United States."

It just makes me smile every time I enter the room. As Den of Geek...

In Soundtracks Of Our Lives, The A.V. Club looks at the dying art of the movie companion album, those “various artists” compilations made to complement films on screen but that often end up taking on lives of their own.
In 1986, on any given week, you could likely find me at this juice bar called Medusa’s, located on Sheffield Avenue in Chicago, where DJ Bud Sweet introduced patrons to bands like Bronski Beat and Tones On Tail. Hearing a song from that era sends me back to that dance floor in a heartbeat. As far as soundtracks go, Grosse Pointe Blank is practically a time machine to my own adolescence.
John Cusack set a high bar for soundtrack selection (and music snobbery) with 2000’s High Fidelity, which has already been carefully deconstructed in this space. But he had a test run in 1997, when he took his ...

In 1997, a film cynic was born.
Seeing Star Wars ruined should have been a sign that 1997 would be the worst year ever for blockbusters. George Lucas’s Special Editions, intended to “improve” the original trilogy but mostly doing the opposite, started arriving in January. By the time of the release of the new version of Return of the Jedi in March, my anticipation for anything ought to have been demolished. But I couldn’t have imagined that was only the beginning.
Actually, the first steps towards the end of an era were made in the early ’90s. That just wasn’t a great time for big movies compared to the prior decade. Some of my biggest letdowns of all time included Hudson Hawk in 1991 and Death Becomes Her in 1992. Jurassic Park wasn’t good enough for me, having read the book. Independence Day put me to sleep in the theater. Beloved...

This is no festive prank, these movies are hilarious.
Let’s face it, the world is a wreck. Every day things look bleaker than they did the day before. It’s gotten to the point where, if you can’t learn to laugh at our misery, you’re finished. If you need some help figuring out how to find humor in even the worst bits of the human experience, dark comedies work, Netflix has them, and we’ve made a list of the good ones. Click on the films’ titles to be taken to their Netflix pages.
Pick of the Month: This Must Be the Place (2011)
I can’t think of another movie in recent times that’s been so good and gotten so little love and attention in return. Maybe that’s because the concept of a former 80s glam rocker who still wears his makeup (Sean Penn) tracking down the Nazi concentration camp guard who...

The latest video-game-to-movie adaptation will update an obscure Sega Mega Drive title from 1992 about a young superhero for hire
An obscure Sega Mega Drive title about a slacker who becomes a superhero for hire is the latest video game to become a candidate for a big-screen adaptation, according to Deadline.
Rent-a-Hero, first released in 1992, has a backstory in which a small-town Japanese kid orders a pizza and instead receives a suit of power armour. Hot Tub Time Machine director Steve Pink (who also co-wrote Grosse Pointe Blank and High Fidelity) is on board to direct, and will write the script with Jeff Morris (The True Memoirs of an International Assassin).

The Overlooked Hotel is beginning to fill up nicely, with a plethora of deserving guests. Our first guest was master storyteller Stephen Tobolowsky, he was followed by Vera Farmiga, Michelle Monaghan, the late lamented J. T. Walsh and then the film Thirteen Days, Grosse Pointe Blank and even some of Woody Allen’s unfairly dismissed movies […]
