Elvis Presley and his backing band played shows night after night to adoring audiences. Though Elvis’ feelings about his music career varied over the years, he went through periods of caring deeply about it. During these times, he wanted to make sure his band was as focused as him. To ensure this, Elvis employed a trick to keep them on their toes.
Elvis Presley kept his band focused during performances
When Elvis was in high school, he performed in a talent show. Here, he learned how much he loved to draw a reaction out of his audience. He wanted his band to help him achieve this, and it drove him to frustration when they didn’t seem to be taking this task seriously. Elvis recalled one concert during which he heard his band discussing home renovations.

Despite saying she loves keeping her daughters entertained, Hollywood star Drew Barrymore draws the line at her girls’ iPads and keeps them locked away in a safe to stop them getting hooked on screens.
The ‘Et’ actress, 48, has daughters Olive, 10, and nine-year-old Frankie with her ex-husband Will Kopelman, 45, and has admitted she is a strict mum when it comes to monitoring their use of electronics, reports femalefirst.co.uk.
She told Better Homes and Gardens magazine: “We watch a ton of movies and shows so I’m not judging anyone about screens.”
“But when it comes to my kids, I’m not a huge fan of personal electronics, like iPads.”
“During the pandemic when schools were virtual we were forced into all being on our separate devices and I didn’t like it.”
“Now, I keep the iPads in a locked safe and they only come out for special occasions.

The stars will have a place to dance after Sunday night’s SAG Awards.
People will host the show’s official post-awards celebration as the Dotdash Meredith publication returns for a 25th year. The afterparty will take place at the Fairmont Century Plaza in Century City, the same hotel that is hosting the SAG Awards. As part of the party collaboration, People will make a “significant grant” to the SAG-AFTRA Foundation’s emergency assistance programs, which helps performing artists facing life-threatening illness and severe economic hardship.
Per People editor-in-chief Wendy Naugle: “It’s an honor to celebrate the incredible actors and the outstanding performances that have moved and changed us. We are also proud to support the SAG-AFTRA Foundation, helping artists both in tough times, like during the pandemic, and exciting times, like when they first embark on their careers. We want artists to have opportunities for years to come.

Iac executives gave more color on how they view the print magazine business Wednesday, following the company’s decision to end several print issues in its portfolio, including Entertainment Weekly, InStyle, Health, EatingWell and Parents.
The company, which acquired these titles through its acquisition of Meredith Corp. in 2021, cut the print editions of these publications in February 2022, while maintaining print editions of titles such as Food & Wine and Better Homes & Gardens. Remaining print editions have seen upgrades to their products, including the paper quality, and are now viewed as “a little bit more of a luxury good,” intended to help with branding, according to DotDash Meredith CEO Neil Vogel, who runs this segment.

Sports Illustrated is undergoing drastic staff cuts. Today, the venerable media outlet trimmed as many as 40 staff members, according to a story in the Wall Street Journal.
Employees were told late today that “their positions were being eliminated,” according to the WSJ. The cuts could represent as many as half of the staff. The exact number of layoffs is unclear.
In May, Meredith Corp. sold Sports Illustrated for $110 million to Authentic Brands Group, a global brand development, marketing and entertainment company that manages Juicy Couture, Nautica, and holds the licensing and trademark rights for celebrities such as Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley and Muhammad Ali.
Sports Illustrated, which is often referred to simply as Si, was first published in 1954 and claims to be read by more than 23 million people each week. It was the first magazine with circulation over one million to win the National Magazine Award for General Excellence twice.

It’s been a good 8 years since the psychotic Mick Taylor (John Jarratt) doled out his own brand of terror and torture on three unsuspecting backpackers in the heart of the Australian Outback. Sad but true. The march of time continues to bring inevitable shifts in the media world. Newsweek has been swallowed by The Daily Beast. And now Time Warner's publishing arm ($3.4 billion in revenue last year) is considering creating a new joint magazine venture with broadcast giant Meredith Corporation (worth about$1.6 billion). Time Warner and Meredith would each merge their magazine titles, leaving Warner more of an entertainment conglomerate than a publishing company, although it plans to hang on to "news mags" Time, Sports Illustrated, Money and Fortune --for now. They are the crown jewels of what was once a storied publishing empire, now down on its heels. Michael Wolff paints a vivid picture of the Time Inc. decline here. The new publicly traded company would own Time Warner's People, still a sales behemoth though down from its heights, InStyle, Real Simple and EW as well as Meredith's Better Homes and Gardens,...

There's something about people who are passionate about aesthetics -- they're so easy to offend. And yet they really do put their aesthetic beliefs into practice with often interesting or even astonishing results. And of course, that makes them perfect subjects for the catty world of reality television.
Similar to TLC's "Four Weddings," the network's new series "Four Houses," premiering Monday, July 2, takes advantage of all of that passion, setting up shop right where the fence between good and bad taste meets the wellspring of creativity.
The concept is pretty simple: Each episode of "Four Houses" puts four very different homeowners on tours of one another's homes to see just how much a reflection each home is of its owners' personalities. As the participants wander through the others' homes -- with the owner out of earshot -- they give their unvarnished take on what they see and rate the homes accordingly.
