Heatseeking filmmaker Olmo Schnabel has signed for representation with WME, and with Black Bear for management.
Schnabel’s breakout directorial effort “Pet Shop Days” played both the Venice International Film Festival and SXSW this cycle, scoring distribution from Utopia for a 2024 theatrical release. Starring Jack Irv, Darío Yazbek Bernal, Willem Dafoe and Peter Sarsgaard, the film tells of a drug lord scion on the run from his powerful family. Slumming it in New York in a haze of sex and drugs, he seduces an equally lost young man and pulls him into the city’s underbelly.
The provocative debut also hit festivals in Chicago, Montclair, Morelia, Santa Barbara and Sarasota. Schnabel was also awarded the Leffest Lisboa Film Festival’s Tap Revelation Award.

Perhaps sharing the screen in Julian Schnabel’s 2000 film Before Night Falls, is what brought Robert Downey Jr. and Johnny Depp close. But certainly, starring in one movie wasn’t what bonded them as best of friends, forever. Sticking through thick and thin, while supporting each other through tough times, is what made Depp and Downey Jr. great friends.
Robert Downey Jr. as Lewis Strauss in Oppenheimer
Ever since then, Robert Downey Jr. and Johnny Depp have made headlines for their envious friendship goals in Hollywood. Like when Depp went through his defamation trial against Amber Heard, Downey Jr. was there to celebrate his victory with a FaceTime. Similarly, after the Iron Man actor won his first Oscar, following his appearance in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, Depp came forward to appreciate his big win.

If there’s one thing Marvel is very good at, it’s casting. From Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man to Chris Hemsworth as Thor, the studio has a knack for finding the ideal actors to bring their favorite comic book characters to life. And it appears that they might have their sights set on another prominent face in the industry for their next big bad: Javier Bardem.

Javier Bardem and Chloë Sevigny have joined “Monster” Season 2 at Netflix, Variety has learned.
The two A-listers join previously announced stars Cooper Koch and Nicholas Alexander Chavez in the upcoming season of the anthology series, which will focus on the Menéndez brothers. The season is officially titled “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menéndez Story” and is slated to debut later in 2024.
Erik (Koch) and Lyle Menéndez (Chavez) were convicted of the murders of their parents, José (Bardem) and Mary Louise “Kitty” Menéndez (Sevigny), in 1996. Authorities argued the brothers committed the murders to inherit their father’s fortune, while the brothers maintained that they killed their parents after years of mental and physical abuse.
“Monster” was co-created by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan. Both serve as executive producers along with Alexis Martin Woodall, Eric Kovtun, David McMillan, Louise Shore, and Carl Franklin. The first season focused on serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer.

Julian Schnabel is in Italy on the set of his star-studded crime mystery “In the Hand of Dante,” for which he and Louise Kugelberg, his wife and close creative collaborator, have been narratively and literally criss-crossing between the 14th and 21st centuries in locations including Sicily, Venice, Verona and Rome.
Besides the film’s previously announced leads — Oscar Isaac, Gal Gadot, Jason Momoa and Gerard Butler — “Hand of Dante” will also see British musician and actor Benjamin Clementine (“Dune”) playing a quintessentially demonic character who seesaws between past and present. Clementine also contributes to the film’s score. Other A-list recruits comprise John Malkovich, Al Pacino and Louis Cancelmi (“Killers of the Flower Moon”) who plays both a present-day hitman named Lefty and nobleman Guido da Polenta, who was Dante’s benefactor.

Julian Schnabel crime thriller “The Hand of Dante” has secured an interim agreement to resume production with stars Oscar Isaac, Jason Momoa and Gerard Butler attached, TheWrap has learned.
Helmed by the Oscar-nominated filmmaker behind “At Eternity’s Gate,” “The Diving Bell and the Butterfly” and “Before Night Falls,” the picture is based on Nick Tosches’ novel of the same name.
Currently in production in Italy, the picture concerns the original manuscript of “The Divine Comedy” just as it mysteriously pops up on the black market. Isaac plays Nick, a weary scholar brought in by New York City’s organized crime elements for the purpose of authentication.
It’s when Nick decides to deal the manuscript, however, that he’s put on a dark and violent path from a metaphorical Hell into Paradise with his love Giulietta. A parallel tale unfolds: the odyssey of Dante (Isaac) himself, a man who — trapped...

Biopics are at times really difficult to make with all the clichés that come with. But there are some who seem to evade all of these pitfalls and create some great moving images. One of those directors is the painter Julian Schnabel. He is a man who seems to create such poetic images on celluloid few can dispute his visions. His most recent work in the French The Diving Bell and The Butterfly was by far one of the greatest Biopics ever made. His idea of mixing poetic prose into the cinematic language has made a darling of the critics.
This film seems to me more like an ode a to the great man Reinaldo Arenas. He believes that beauty in the form of writing always needed to be preserved. But the people were mainly the causes of decay in the Cuban Communist movements. He was hounded all his life for his writings.

Emerging star from Hong Kong, Isabella Wei, headlines Silent D Pictures’ comedy-drama “High Wire.”
The film follows the story of Go-wing, a British-Chinese takeaway girl who discovers her inner strength and artistic bravery when a circus comes to her small English town. As Go-wing navigates the challenges of her dual cultural identity, she finds herself at a crossroads and must decide between conforming to societal expectations or forging her own path towards her dreams. The film pays homage to the first and second generations of Chinese immigrants and their journey to adapt to life in England whilst facing issues of systemic racism and discrimination.
Wei’s breakout performance was in Netflix’s mystery sci-fi series “1899,” where she played the enigmatic Ling Yi, a geisha. Wei is also set to appear in Rupert Sanders’ much anticipated reboot of “The Crow” alongside Bill Skarsgård, Danny Huston and FKA Twigs.

Bardem will receive his award at the Kursaal Auditorium in San Sebastian on Sept. 22.
The Spanish festival has been a regular stopping spot for Bardem in his long career. He has attended San Sebastian more than 20 times over the past 30 years, from his festival debut with Golden Balls in 1993 through his most recent festival screening, of Fernando León de Aranoa’s The Good Boss back in 2021. In 1994, he received San Sebastian’s Silver Shell for best actor for two roles: In Imanol Uribe’s Numbered Days and Gonzalo Suárez’s El detective y la muerte.

Apx will complete the financing on “L’Inverno,” with the 12-million budgeted movie starting principal photography in Rome, Italy, this fall. (Apx has a 10-year commitment to move productions to Italy.)
Spanning two World Wars, “L’Inverno” tells the story of former childhood friends SS Officer Nikolaus Führich and Jewish violinist Elisabeth Soloveichik, expressed through the eyes of Elizabeth’s brother,...

The 2022 Oscar nominees for Best Actor are Javier Bardem (“Being the Ricardos”), Benedict Cumberbatch (“The Power of the Dog”), Andrew Garfield, Will Smith (“King Richard”), and Denzel Washington (“The Tragedy of Macbeth”). Smith (16/5) is favored to win by our odds, followed in order by Cumberbatch (19/5), Garfield (4/1), Washington (9/2), and Bardem (9/2).
All five of these men have contended here at least once before, making theirs the first Best Actor lineup since 1981 to include no first-time acting nominees. Furthermore, it is the very first to consist only of previous lead nominees. The last time this came close to happening was in 2003, when newcomer and eventual victor Adrien Brody (“The Pianist”) competed against category veterans Nicolas Cage (“Adaptation”), Michael Caine (“The Quiet American”), Daniel Day-Lewis (“Gangs of New York”), and Jack Nicholson (“About Schmidt”).

When it comes to the Best Actor Oscar category, voters tend to go for lengthier performances. The majority of lead male winners, including eight of the last 10, have had at least 70 minutes of screen time in their respective films. Just two years ago, Joaquin Phoenix’s 103-minute performance in “Joker” became the fifth longest to ever win the award. It was, however, immediately followed by one nearly 40 minutes shorter, and there is a strong chance that an even smaller performance will be chosen this year.
Anthony Hopkins took the 2021 Best Actor trophy for his one hour, five minutes, and 14 seconds of work in “The Father,” which amounts to 67.29% of the film. The performance, though nearly three times as long as his first lead winning one in “The Silence of the Lambs” (1992), is still one of the five shortest to be honored in this category since the turn of the century.

Exclusive: Vito Schnabel (Before Night Falls), Julia Fox (Uncut Gems) and Steven Van Zandt (The Sopranos) have signed on to star in the dark comedy The Trainer, which Tony Kaye (American History X) is directing from a script by Schnabel and Jeff Solomon.
In development for nearly a decade, The Trainer is based on an original story by Schnabel. The film unfolding over eight days of sleep-deprived chaos follows Jack (Schnabel), a down-on-his-luck fitness expert living with his mother in Los Angeles, who takes a maniacal swing at fame and fortune, trying to realize his version of the American dream.
Schnabel, Kaye and Jeremy Steckler are producing, with George Paaswell on board to exec produce. Production will kick off in Los Angeles in early April.

The couple that gets nominated together can do the same upgrade together. With their Best Actor and Best Actress Oscar bids for “Being the Ricardos” and “Parallel Mothers,” respectively, Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz became the sixth married couple to score acting nominations in the same year, and since they’re both already winners in supporting, they can now join the elite circle of performers who’ve claimed both acting prizes.
Bardem, who won Best Supporting Actor for “No Country for Old Men” (2007), would be the seventh man to win lead and supporting Oscars — and the first since Denzel Washington accomplished it 20 years ago. Washington, of course, is one of Bardem’s rivals this year, nominated for “The Tragedy of Macbeth.” Cruz, who collected the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” a year after her future hubby triumphed, would be the eighth woman to pull off the sweep.

Well, if Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz didn’t know who they were taking to the Oscars before, they do now. The married actors earned matching nominations: Best Actor for “Being the Ricardos” and Best Actress for “Parallel Mothers,” respectively. They’re the sixth spouses in Oscar history to earn Oscar acting nominations in the same year.

Oscars: Can Penélope Cruz and Javier Bardem Be the Fourth Married Couple Nominated in the Same Year?
Penélope Cruz is luxuriously refined in “Parallel Mothers,” a performance that has picked up critical acclaim and notable accolades since debuting at Venice. The voting bloc of the international community is a key demographic that pushed last year’s “The Father” from Florian Zeller, another Sony Pictures Classics feature, to perform exceptionally well with the Academy despite significant misses from key guild groups leading to nominations. Zeller’s film went on to win two major Oscars for adapted screenplay (Zeller and Christopher Hampton) and best actor (Anthony Hopkins).
The awards prospects for Pedro Almodóvar’s Spanish drama have been hindered by the switch in-person to virtual campaigning, which is not unique to all of this year’s contenders. However, the lifeblood of a film like “Parallel Mothers” appeals to and requires the international community’s presence, so the BAFTA snubs nearly across the board are worrisome. After revisiting a slice of 1960s history in last year’s “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” Aaron Sorkin turned his lens to “Being the Ricardos,” cataloging a politically tumultuous week in the 1950s for Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz during the heyday of “I Love Lucy.” The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences often falls hard for movies about old Hollywood, and it would be foolish to think that they’ve changed their tune, especially after seeing films such as “Mank” from David Fincher garner the most nominations in the 2020 Oscar race. The new movie from Amazon Studios could follow a similar trajectory — competing in categories across the board.
Under Sorkin’s direction, “Being the Ricardos” presents plenty of chuckles and sympathy for our favorite redhead in TV history. Kidman embodies the essence of Ball, especially in her mannerisms during the rehearsals and filming of episodes. She very well may break your heart,...

Olivier Martinez (Unfaithful) is set for a heavily recurring role opposite Maya Rudolph in Apple’s untitled half-hour comedy series from Emmy winners Alan Yang and Matt Hubbard. Created and written by Yang and Hubbard, the series follows Molly (Rudolph), a woman whose seemingly perfect life is upended after her husband leaves her with nothing but $87 billion. Martinez will play Jean Pierre, a handsome, charismatic, romantic billionaire. Jean-Pierre comes from a philanthropic, old money family in France and wants his family’s charitable foundation to collaborate with Molly. Although he intends to keep it strictly business, there is an undeniable connection between Jean-Pierre and Molly. Mj Rodriguez also stars. Martinez first became known in his native France for his Cesar-nominated performance in IP5: L’ile aux Pachydermes. He went on to star opposite Juliette Binoche in The Horseman on the Roof and in the Oscar-nominated features Before Night Falls and Unfaithful.

The show must go on. At least the Venice Film Festival must go on. Even a pandemic can’t stop the oldest international film festival from taking place Sept. 2 through Sept. 12 in the picturesque of grand canals. Of course, safety is first with masks, social distancing etc. are all in place as critics get a first glance at possible award-winners.
Over the past seven years, the festival has held world premieres of such Oscar-winners as 2013’s “Gravity”; 2014’s “Birdman”; 2015’s “Spotlight”; 2016’s “La La Land”; 2017’s “The Shape of Water”; 2018’s “Roma”; and 2019’s “Joker.” Only two films that won the festival’s top prize have gone on to win Best Picture at the Oscars: 1948’s “Hamlet” and 2017’s “The Shape of Water.”

Even the Covid-19 pandemic hasn’t been able to douse the flames of Johnny Depp and Amber Heard’s messy legal battle, and it would appear that we’re still far away from a possible reconciliation.
Just when we thought that things had settled between Depp and his former partner, the Pirates of the Caribbean star filed a multi-million defamation lawsuit to clear his name after an op-ed by The Sun called him a “wife-beater.” Now, in the wake of new evidence as part of this recent court feud, we’ve learned that the Aquaman actress twisted the truth by playing the victim in their initial legal battle for divorce, painting herself as the one who’d been wronged when in truth, she was the one who emotionally and physically abused Depp.
Obviously, seeing as how these allegations ruined his reputation and career, this was a huge victory for the actor.

Javier Bardem started in showbiz as a child actor in Spanish TV series “El pícaro” in 1974, landing his first recurring role at age 17 in 1986 in drama “Segunda enseñanza.” Hollywood success followed; he played Cuban poet and novelist Reinaldo Arenas in Julian Schnabel’s “Before Night Falls,” earning the first of three Oscar nominations. In buzzy Greenpeace documentary “Sanctuary,” which premiered in the official selection at the Toronto Film Festival, Bardem forgoes his dramatic chops to produce and narrate this nonfiction work about preserving marine life in the increasingly warming Antarctic.

Schnabel’s attention to these subtleties establish his credibility and give the movie real texture...

Willem Dafoe paints a moving portrait of Vincent Van Gogh in this unconventional biopic.
It seems to me that the actual filmmaking in a movie should mirror the setting in which the film takes place, especially if it’s a period piece. A good example of how not to shoot a movie is Michael Mann’s 2009 Depression-era gangster tale, Public Enemies, in which he inexplicably shot a movie set in the 1930s with HD video cameras, resulting in a weird, smeary TV esthetic for what should have been a more traditional and richly formal celluloid exercise.
I felt the same way watching Julian Schnabel’s At Eternity’s Gate, which depicts the last, troubled years of the tormented artist Vincent Van Gogh (Willem Dafoe). Schnabel, whose previous films include the masterful Before Night Falls and The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, keeps his camera constantly moving in At Eternity’s Gate -- whipping between characters,...

That dude could paint! There are biopics of artists that don’t ask more of an audience than that simple reaction. Not so with Julian Schnabel’s extraordinary At Eternity’s Gate, which features a monumental, career-best performance from Willem Dafoe as Vincent Van Gogh. It’s not that Schnabel doesn’t glory in the visions the Dutch painter put on canvas. But Schnabel, renowned as a painter in the way Van Gogh never was in life, wants to get inside the head of this tormented artist and make us see what he sees,...

Lyon, France – Javier Bardem charmed his audience at a masterclass during the Lumière Film Festival on Monday, eliciting laughter with stories of his youth, learning English by way of AC/DC, his famous family and expounding on the talent, compassion and genius of the filmmakers with whom he has worked, among them Bigas Luna, Julian Schnabel, the Coen brothers and Woody Allen.
Bardem reiterated his support for Allen, who directed the Oscar-winning Spanish actor in 2008’s “Vicky Cristina Barcelona,” saying he would work with him again at a day’s notice.
“He’s a genius,” Bardem said, adding that in this time of the Me Too movement, “I would work with him tomorrow.” He stressed that Allen’s legal status today has not changed since the last they worked together in 2007 and noted that the director had never been found guilty of any crime. “Today, 11 years later, it is the same accusation.

This year’s Venice Film Festival isn’t over yet, but already it feels historic. A nexus of shifting paradigms and pure filmmaking excitement. Here are a few thoughts about it:
1. It Was the Mother of All Festival Cornucopias. It’s not unusual to leave a film festival having encountered a number of inspiring movies. But what dazzled uniquely at Venice this year was how many films there were that felt extraordinary that felt so major. From the convulsively authentic and exciting “First Man,” a rough-and-tumble 1960s Nasa-goes-to-the-moon drama that takes up residence in your head, to the transcendent romance of “A Star Is Born,” a Hollywood movie that feels at once rapturously new and swooningly classic. From the wicked acidic grip of the “All About Eve”-meets-Masterpiece Theatre of Doom costume drama “The Favourite” to the neorealist aesthetic mastery of “Roma” to the ecstatically lived-in portrait of Vincent van Gogh...

"I'd like to find a new light... for paintings we haven't yet seen." CBS Films has unveiled an official trailer for the indie drama At Eternity's Gate, the latest feature made by artist & filmmaker Julian Schnabel. This film is about famous Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh, starring Willem Dafoe as Van Gogh, telling the story of his final few years in France when he made the majority of his remarkable paintings. The story follows Van Gogh struggling to survive and make money, along with being sent to a hospital after a judge claimed he was mentally ill. At Eternity's Gate's full cast includes Rupert Friend as his brother Theo, Oscar Isaac as Paul Gauguin, plus Mads Mikkelsen, Mathieu Amalric, Emmanuelle Seigner, and Niels Arestrup. This just premiered at the Venice Film Festival, and plays at the New York Film Festival next. I just saw it and it's another ...

“What do you paint?” The question comes from an asylum inmate who is seated next to Vincent van Gogh (Willem Dafoe). Van Gogh replies with a single word: “Sunlight.” That may be as good a description of van Gogh’s art as you’re likely to get. In his brief time on this planet, and the even briefer period of his full creative effusion, van Gogh painted flowers, wheat fields, vineyards, cafés, chairs, boats, starry nights, and himself, but what he really painted was the light that bounced off those things and rippled through them. He painted the ecstatic holiness he saw in that light, with each brush stroke a mystic gob of sensuality and spirit.
“At Eternity’s Gate,” Julian Schnabel’s fluky and transporting drama about van Gogh’s tumultuous, fervid, and artistically possessed last days, is a movie that channels the light — the evanescent glow of van...

Idiosyncratic examinations of uniquely driven creative individuals have dominated the film work of Julian Schnabel, starting with his New York art-world contemporary in Basquiat, continuing with Cuban poet and novelist Reinaldo Arenas in Before Night Falls, and with French editor and writer Jean-Dominique Bauby in The Diving Bell and the Butterfly. But perhaps nowhere has Schnabel’s own experience as a painter and his insight into the artistic process been poured as obsessively into his subject as in At Eternity’s Gate, an unbridled portrait of the painful but productive final years in the life of Vincent van Gogh, a role inhabited with the ...
