The tradition of presidents reaching out to the families of U.S. servicemembers killed in action has been at the heart of an ongoing controversy surrounding President Donald Trump‘s recent call to the grieving widow of slain Army Sgt. La David Johnson, and Trump’s false claim that his predecessors did not make such calls.
In fact, the custom is long-established and many past presidents have reached out to Gold Star families to offer condolences through letters, private meetings and invitations.
That includes former President John F. Kennedy, who wrote one such letter to the grieving widow of Rudolf Anderson Jr.

War For The Planet Of The Apes, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Star Wars and more, as we chat to composer Michael Giacchino...
Few blockbuster composers are in as much demand as Michael Giacchino. Having risen through the ranks of video game scoring and smash-hit TV sucesses with the likes of Lost, the versatile composer has over the last decade musically defined several enormous franchises. From Rogue One to Jurassic World to acclaimed Pixar Oscar-winners like Up, there's no end to Giacchino's talents.
With his 50th birthday concert at the Royal Albert Hall coming up on 20th October, we were delighted to catch up with Michael to ask that all-important question: what makes a truly great film score?
Well, it's been 15 years since I was playing Medal Of Honor: Frontline on the PS2 and now I'm sat here talking to its composer! Seriously, how hard were the tanks to defeat in that game?...

Right now, the DC Extended Universe is one giant question mark — and most notably, The Batman may be the biggest question mark of all. Initially, Ben Affleck was set to write, direct, and star in the Caped Crusader film. However, last year saw him backpedaling from the responsibility, and earlier this year, we saw him leave the role of director altogether. So with Affleck free from the obligations of helming that picture, what would be another film we’d see him take on next?
It sounds like, in true Affleck form, he’s headed for a much more grounded project. The Tracking Board is reporting that the two-time Oscar-winning filmmaker is currently in talks with Sony to direct Red Platoon, a film based on the memoirs of the same name from Medal of Honor recipient Clinton Romesha.
The outlet is describing the project as follows:

Ben Affleck has got a new film project that he's set his sights on to direct. According to The Tracking Board, he's in early talks to direct a war film called Red Platoon. The movie is set up at Sony Pictures and it would be his first non-Warner Bros. film project since he started directing movies.
Insiders are also saying that the studio is looking at Ben's brother Casey Affleck to star in the film. Here's a description of the story that the film will tell:
Based on the memoir by Clinton Romesha, Red Platoon tells the story of the Battle of Kamdesh, which took place during the War in Afghanistan. On Oct. 3, 2009, more than 300 Taliban fighters launched a predawn raid on Outpost Keating, a remote and controversial American outpost near the Afghan-Pakistani border, overrunning its perimeter defenses and breaching its wire. Staff Sgt. Romesha, a husband and father of three children,...

Sony has work to do on PlayStation backwards compatibility - an area it's lagging behind Xbox One...
Blood soaks the walls of the fog-filled entrance to a labyrinthine alley.
Bravely, Harry continues into the darkness. A siren wails hauntingly from some unknown place. There is something terribly disconcerting about all this. Perhaps he should go back? And then, in the blackness, he sees a gurney. A bloody sheet covers what can only be a body lying beneath it. And yet, Harry goes on. More blood is splattered on the concrete, even more drips from the chain link fence. And then he comes across it – a horrifying decomposing corpse hangs from the fence in front of him. And what are those figures coming towards him out of the gloom?
Things are looking very bad in the town of Silent Hill.
It is one of the most memorable moments in video game history.

The new Call of Duty is stepping back into World War II and the first trailer leaves us with some impressions worth noting.
I don’t know about others, but I remember an age when almost every single shooter that released had something to do with WWII. We had Medal of Honor and Call of Duty doing it, then everyone else trying to jump in and grab some of the pie. Whenever games ventured off and did something more “modern” it always felt like a gem, and then Modern Warfare released which changed the game entirely.
While WWII games have been on the back burner for about a generation, I feel like if we are jumping back into that pool then it’s still too soon. I don’t mind a WWII game here and there, but if the whole industry is going to go there I will quickly get annoyed.

It’s been roughly a decade since Call of Duty breached the battlefronts of the historic World Wars, but with the upcoming release of Call of Duty: WWII, that’s all about to change.
Set for release on November 3rd, 2017, Activision and developer Sledgehammer Games gave us an idea of what to expect earlier today, satiating fans with a realistic, gritty depiction of war. Suffice to say, the bombast of previous titles has been left well behind.
Though they obviously didn’t reveal too much – saving a lot of the juiciest details for E3, no doubt – here are 7 key things we learned from Activision’s presentation.

The Call Of Duty videogames are heading to the movies, as Activision Blizzard eyes a Marvel-style cinematic universe.
Notwithstanding the fact that the games themselves are suffering from their strict adhesion to an annual publishing cycle, the Call Of Duty series of first person shooters nonetheless remain some of the most popular videogames on the planet.
It’s perhaps, then, something of a surprise that – until now – there’s not actually been a movie take on the series, not least given how cinematic many of the moments in the games are. You don’t have to look far to see the cinema influences, and this is has been something that’s been part and parcel of Call Of Duty since day one (or, going even further back, Medal Of Honor: Allied Assault).

TV’s Flash, Grant Gustin, has lined up one of his first film roles, with Deadline reporting that the former Glee star will be lending his talents to a new political drama, titled The Last Full Measure. Starring McU veteran Sebastian “Bucky” Stan, the film centers on a group of lawyers and former soldiers fighting the political elite in order to get a posthumous Medal Of Honor for Gustin’s character, Airman First Class William H. Pitsenbarger.
Fittingly, given Gustin’s day job, Pitsenbarger was basically a real-life superhero, serving in Vietnam in the Air Force’s prestigious Pararescueman program—i.e., the guys who drop out of helicopters into active combat zones, evacuating wounded soldiers and saving lives. Pitsenbarger died in 1966, after ordering a damaged chopper crew to leave him in an active war zone so that he could provide medical care and support to a crew of ...

“La La Land,” as expected, dominated the Oscar crafts, with Damien Chazelle’s musical valentine taking four awards for cinematography, production design, score, and original song. Still, it was predicted to win at least three more.
And it was a great night for Disney and its trio of winners: the zeitgeist-grabbing “Zootopia” (animated feature), Disney Animation’s third Oscar in four years, which trumpeted tolerance ahead of the Presidential election; Alan Barillaro’s fine-feathered “Piper” (animated short), Pixar’s R&D sculpting project that ended its 15-year shorts drought; and Jon Favreau’s “The Jungle Book” (VFX), which innovated photographic-based realism. The award was shared by production VFX supervisor Rob Legato, Mpc’s VFX supervisor Adam Valdez, Weta Digital’s VFX supervisor Dan Lemmon, and Andrew R. Jones, the animation supervisor.
In winning his third Oscar, Legato expanded a live-action ethos for believably integrating virtual characters and environments (created by...

Late in the Oscar season, at the moment when voters actually fill in their ballots (the deadline is February 21 at 5 pm), it all comes down to what movies they have actually seen. What did they love the most, and is freshest in their minds? Which film aligns with the zeitgeist, delivering the message that 6,000 voters want to send?
The five directing nominations tend to line up with the strongest Best Picture contenders, although snubbed director nominee Ben Affleck did win Best Picture win for “Argo.” However, that underdog story became a narrative in itself that drove “Argo” to the win.
This year, the narratives include the aftermath of#OscarsSoWhite and the election of Donald J. Trump. Which will stick?
Here’s how the Best Director and Best Picture races are shaking out.

Thriller remake The Manchurian Candidate is a great showcase for director Jonathan Demme's use of the camera to evoke fear and empathy...

You’d think that the Oscar race for Best Editing would be very much in play. After all, “Arrival” and “La La Land” took the Ace Awards for drama and comedy, respectively, while “Hacksaw Ridge” won the BAFTA.
But given the audacity of Best Picture frontrunner “La La Land” and the fact that editor Tom Cross previously won the Oscar for Damien Chazelle’s “Whiplash,” the odds are with him again.
Still, with such a strong group of nominees, the craft awards could break unexpectedly. Each editor explores existential crises in different ways and creatively plays with time and space.
Here’s how the race is shaking out.
“La La Land”
With the bittersweet love story between Ryan Gosling’s Sebastian and Emma Stone’s Mia, Chazelle constructed a musical bridge between the past and the present — Hollywood as both dreamland and boulevard of broken dreams. It’s filled with flashbacks and fantasy sequences,...

It's the biggest prize that a film can win, the coveted Best Picture Oscar.
2016 was a great year for movies, so great that we can enthusiastically say that we loved all of the films nominated in this category, and that any of them would be worthy of the top prize. However, part of the reason why it was such an exceptional year is because a few of the best films were pretty much masterpieces that will be remembered for years to come.
Many would say that this has easily become a two-film race between the dreamy musical La La Land and the socially relevant coming-of-age film Moonlight. The current political climate may sway the Academy more towards Moonlight's direction, though...

Mel Gibson directs this true-life tale of a Us army medic who refused to bear arms with great force, but little subtlety
Mel Gibson’s robust directorial technique brings an undeniable punch to the combat scenes of this Oscar-nominated second world war drama. Elsewhere in the film, however, there’s a sledgehammer lack of subtlety that is only partially mitigated by Andrew Garfield’s impressive performance.
Garfield plays Desmond Doss, a real-life war hero who became the first man in Us history to receive the Medal of Honor without firing a shot. Desmond volunteers to serve his country with the caveat that, due to his personal and religious beliefs, he refuses to touch a gun. This doesn’t go down well with his commanding officers (Sam Worthington, Vince Vaughn) who don’t buy Desmond’s argument that he can serve as a medic without bearing arms.

Joe Biden is known for getting along with politicians on both sides of the aisle, but one former Republican congressman wasn’t happy about the vice president being awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama on Thursday.
Former Republican Rep. Tim Huelskamp of Kansas took to Twitter on Thursday night to voice his disapproval, tweeting: “For once, @JoeBiden and I agree: he doesn’t deserve this honor.”
This isn’t the first time the former congressman has taken aim at Biden on Twitter. In Sept. 2015, just before Pope Francis delivered an address to Congress, Huelskamp criticized Biden...

Several of this year’s sound contenders explored battles and other action in a retro fashion very different from the usual superhero mayhem. They include the World War II arenas of “Hacksaw Ridge” and “Allied,” as well as the grittier “Star Wars” battles in “Rogue One”; the terrorist bombing of “Patriots Day”; the miracle on the Hudson in “Sully”; and the unique Indian presence of “The Jungle Book.”
“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story”
To comply with director Gareth Edwards’ desire for a grittier “Star Wars” movie, sound editors Matthew Wood and Christopher Scarabosio created a new kind of soundscape. “We tried to make it more war-like than a classic ‘Star Wars’ battle,” Scarabosio told IndieWire. “Obviously there are lasers but we were going for impacts that were more realistic, more like you would hear when a bullet hits a tree or some kind of container, and of sand kicking up.

When it comes to the Academy Awards, voters tend to think highbrow. They like to represent the best, most humane, classiest version of themselves.
But don’t forget the Steak Eaters.
The Academy is full of them. They’re red-blooded males (not just American) — often directors, writers, and craftspeople. They’re the guys who voted for Oscar-winners “Argo,” “The Silence of the Lambs,” “Braveheart,” “Gladiator,” “Avatar,” and yes, “Crash” over “Brokeback Mountain.”
“They vote for big movies that make big money, good solid moviemaking with great actors and good storytelling,” one veteran Oscar campaigner told me. In recent years, this faction of the Academy voted for mainstream hits such as Ang Lee’s “Life of Pi,” Alfonso Cuaron’s “Gravity,” Clint Eastwood’s “American Sniper,” George Miller’s “Mad Max: Fury Road,” and A.G. Inarritu’s “The Revenant.”
This year, several movies could get a boost from the Steak Eater vote.
