Spiral: From the Book of Saw marks Charlie Clouser’s ninth film in the franchise and it's very apparent from the following Q&a that the original Nine Inch Nails member would love to score nine more. The tone and vibe around the Saw franchise is one that he loves and excels at, and with the Spiral original score now available, we've been provided with the following Q&a where he discusses keeping the sound of "Saw" fresh in the latest installment, working with Darren Lynn Bousman, and more:
Was the transition from Nine Inch Nails to film scoring a hard one for you? If you would have not gotten into film scoring, what do you think you would have done?
Even before I got involved with Nine Inch Nails, I had worked for a few years with a composer who was scoring a big TV network detective series in the 1980’s,...

ABC’s Stumptown this Wednesday drew just 2.5 million total viewers along with a 0.4 demo rating, ticking down week-to-week to mark new series lows for the freshman drama.

Last week, “The Crown” revealed that its third season of the royal drama would be jumping forward a few decades in time, and as a result recasting its leads, with the role of Queen Elizabeth II now passing from Claire Foy to Olivia Colman. This inspired the thought — what if “Stranger Things” (a period drama in its own way) pulled a similar move at some point during its run, jumping forward to something close to the modern day? And if it did, who should be enlisted to play the kids of Hawkins, all grown up?
Because perhaps they’ve remained friends over the years. Perhaps they’ve drifted apart. But it’s not hard to imagine strange things continuing to happen to these characters, no matter the time period. So here are our ideal picks for the cast of “Stranger Things 2017,” the kids as well as a few of the adults.

When have tabloid rumours been spot on about Doctor Who, and when have they been, er, less accurate?
“Look Who's the Doc's new assistant!” On Tuesday, the Mirror's front page trumpeted an exclusive reveal that Bradley Walsh would be Jodie Whittaker's companion in the new series of Doctor Who.

The one-time Sarah Jane Adventures guest star would be the first companion actor to have hosted a quiz show with the same name as a 1960s serial, but beyond trivia, the report has been fairly well received as far as we can see – Walsh is a decent actor, who's worked with incoming executive producer Chris Chibnall before on Law & Order UK, and a fun screen presence. But given the source, might it all be a load of bobbins?...

Left-of-centre comedy The Menkoff Method marks a return to film directing for veteran David Parker — he last directed 1997's.Diana and Me.

In January 1914, a horrific murder shakes the city of Budapest: One of the city’s most famous courtesans, Elza Mágnás, has been strangled and her body thrown into the icy waters of the Danube. Chronicling the last four days of Elza’s life through the eyes of a young and naive maid, “Demimonde” — which is based on a true tale of love, passion, sex, and power — untangles the prostitute’s bizarrely complex relationships with her housekeeper, her sponsor, and her lover.

Ten years after Anthony Minghella optioned Liz Jensen‘s The 9th Life of Louis Drax to develop cinematically, it was his son Max who saw it begin production. The younger Minghella’s first credited screenplay, probably brought to director Alexandre Aja on set of their previous collaboration Horns, it would ultimately take another two for the finished film’s release. If I were to wager a guess as to why I’d say the distributors found themselves painted in a corner unable to figure out how to sell it. Rated R for reasons that probably could have been cut to earn a PG-13 if desired, the story arrives from the viewpoint of a nine year-old boy—his dark fantasy delivered in a way that feels perfectly primed for teenagers rather than adults.
Young Louis Drax (Aiden Longworth) is an original. He’s smart, perceptive, and extremely accident-prone from the womb.

HBO’s well-received limited series “The Night Of” will wrap up its eight-part whodunnit in late August. Steve Zaillian’s gritty drama, which examines a man’s fate after he wakes up charged with the murder of a relative stranger, debuted to rave reviews from critics and audiences. IndieWire’s Ben Travers writes, “By actively engaging on personal and political levels, Zaillian sucks the viewer into a nightmare scenario wholly dependent on two verdicts: first, whether or not Naz is found guilty, but also if he really did it.” Here’s hoping the series can maintain its slow burn thrills all the way to the end.

2016 is going to be a bitchin’ year for science fiction and fantasy television shows. Not only for new shows hitting your screen but returning favorites! Here are some of our favorites that we are looking forward to over the next twelve months:
Mid Season Premieres:
“iZombie” (January 12, The CW)
Our darling but reluctant zombie Liv has broken up with Major for what feels like the billionth time (poor Major amiright?), the mob boss and Max Rager company are still on the loose, and the zombie cure is pretty much dead (get it??). Things aren’t looking good for our protags.
“The Walking Dead” (February 14, AMC)
The zombie horde is in Alexandria and the town that could have been home is about to be destroyed (Again). Guess who is about to come to make an entrance? Highly anticipated villain of the comic book series, Negan, it scheduled make his appearance in...

After singling out the great breakthrough performances of the year, it’s time to turn our eyes to the ensembles. Whether it’s a small supporting role or the leading gig, the decisions of a casting director are vital to a project’s success. This year saw a number of flawless casting line-ups, from overlooked dramas to some of 2015’s most-celebrated films. Check out our list of ten favorites and let us know yours in the comments below.
The Assassin
The Assassin is first and foremost a film belonging to Shu Qi — Hou Hsiao-hsien said as much when I interviewed him earlier this year — but a work of such lyricism requires more than one player. Because her Nie Yinniang floats over the film, always spoken of and most often appearing for the quick strike before receding, the fear that’s established by this picture’s co-stars — especially Chen Chang,...

By rights I should hate the English. Seriously, my background is almost entirely Scots and Irish. I grew up hearing about the troubles the English gave to the Scots and Irish, both in school and from my parents.
Yet I do not, I love the English. How can I hate a country that gave us not only Monty Python but also Benny Hill and the Carry On Films? How can I bear any ill will to a country that gave us writers of the caliber of Ramsey Campbell, Brian Aldiss, Michael Moorcock and J. G Ballard? How can anyone hate a country that not only prizes eccentric behavior but encourages it? Take Mr. Kim Newman for instance, a brilliant writer whose work appears regularly in Video WatchDog and Videoscope Mr. Newman dresses himself, has his hair and mustache styled and speaks in the manner of someone from the 19th Century!

When it comes to the world of heroic fantasy, there have been a hell of a lot of really great butlers. We’ve got such luminaries as Ram Singh (The Spider), Bernardo (Zorro), Cadbury (Richie Rich), Ianto Jones (Torchwood), Lurch (The Addams Family), Max von Mayerling (Sunset Boulevard), two different Smitherses (Veronica Lodge and the Simpsons), Fritz Brenner (Nero Wolfe), Birmingham Brown (Charlie Chan) and of course Edwin Jarvis (The Avengers or Agent Carter – take your pick). There were the Green Hornet’s Kato, but that dude was more of a partner/sidekick than a butler, and Jack Benny’s pal Rochester was only technically a butler. He was actually Benny’s arch-enemy.
But head and shoulders above all other butlers, the king of the mountain of butlers is Bruce Wayne’s own Alfred Pennyworth. You can tell from the actors who played him on film and television – Michael Caine,...

Director/Screenwriter: Patrick Brice
Two families meet at the park and set up a playdate that has unexpected outcomes for all. Cast: Adam Scott, Jason Schwartzman, Taylor Schilling, Judith Godrèche. (film synopsis from sxsw.com)

Final Score: 8/10
Manglehorn
Director: David Gordon Green, Screenwriter: Paul Logan
Reclusive small town locksmith, A.J. Manglehorn, who has never recovered from his losing his true love embarks on a new tenuous relationship with a local woman he meets at the bank. Cast: Al Pacino, Holly Hunter, Harmony Korine, Chris Messina. (U.S. Premiere)

He’s been a Hollywood star since his teens, when he starred in Class, Sixteen Candles and The Sure Thing, but thankfully John Cusack was never like the characters in David Cronenberg’s Maps To The Stars. A brutal satire about the players, wannabes and has-beens of Hollywood, Cusack plays Stafford Weiss, a self-help guru who peddles his therapies to the weak-minded. Banshee, Season 3: Episode 2 – “Snakes and Whatnot”
Written by Halley Gross
Directed by Loni Peristere
Airs Friday nights at 10 on Cinemax
If last week’s season three premiere suggested the importance of legacy in Banshee, “Snakes and Whatnot” is the companion piece that shows how one’s legacy can be controlled by perception. It’s said that history is written by the victors, and several characters here–Rebecca, Chayton and Nola chief among them–want to make sure that they’re both taken seriously and come out on top.
Nola’s naturally callous demeanor, while one of her most entertaining qualities from a viewer’s perspective, made it hard to gauge how much she cared about her brother Alex. She was there offering curt advice when he was slipping up, but her return to Banshee shows how deep sibling love goes and how it’s easy to be taken for granted.

1. Dead Ringers
Two Jeremy Irons doing anything would be scary: his turn in 1988’s Dead Ringers as good gynaecologist, bad gynaecologist is truly terrifying. Irons plays identical twin doctors Beverly and Eliot Mantle with dizzying ease and effect: you give up looking for the special effects, because you forget there are any. Genevieve Bujold’s Claire gets far more than she bargained for: sinister is heaped upon tragic when she goes to their clinic because of her infertility and is drawn darkly downhill into the brothers’ world of women-sharing, paranoid delusions, assault against patients and an abundance of prescription drugs. Beverly and Eliot’s souls are so close that they have grown interdependent and tangled, like the branches of trees planted too close together. Body horror is given a stark slant when Beverly attacks a patient with a specially-made medical tool, and the spectre of partly hidden female genitalia hangs...

A self-acknowledged "showcase for Academy Award frontrunners," the Santa Barbara International Film Festival is often overlooked for the actual films that earn it festival status. An amalgamation of international discoveries and ’merica’s circuit highlights, the Sbiff curates a week of best-of-the-best to pair with their star-praising. The 2015 edition offers another expansive selection, bookended by two films that aren’t on any radars just yet. Sbiff will open with "Desert Dancer," producer Richard Raymond’s directorial debut. Starring Reece Ritchie and Frieda Pinto, the drama follows a group of friends who wave off the harsh political climate of Iran’s 2009 presidential election in favor of forming a dance team, picking up moves from Michael Jackson, Gene Kelly and Rudolf Nureyev thanks to the magic of YouTube. The festival will close with "McFarland, USA," starring Kevin Costner and Maria Bello. Telling the 1987 true story of a Latino high school’s underdog cross-country team,...

The 21st Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards Nominations were revealed Wednesday morning, serving as yet another precursor on the long road to the Oscars.
In the film categories, Birdman was the big winner, scoring four nominations, including for Michael Keaton, Edward Norton and Emma Stone, as well as the collective ensemble cast. Boyhood followed right in its footsteps with three nods for Ethan Hawke, Patricia Arquette and another ensemble nomination.
The big surprises of the morning’s nominations started with Jake Gyllenhaal for Nightcrawler, a bubble contender in a crowded Best Actor race, Jennifer Aniston for Cake, a bubble contender in a disappointingly less crowded Best Actress race, Robert Duvall in the poorly reviewed The Judge and Naomi Watts for St. Vincent (Watts was in Birdman as well, but that must’ve slipped SAG’s minds).

As some of you may know, I'm a bit of a jack(ass) of all trades. I follow the film industry for Lr, and critique films. But I'm also an actor, I front a rock band, I'm a DJ, film editor, and director as well. Basically, when it comes to entertainment, there's nothing I don't do. For some time now, I've been mulling over bringing some of my other interests to Lr, and I'll be starting with the SAG Awards. How? Well, I've been a member of SAG for 6 years now and I also am part of the voting process. That means every year I am sent screeners of all the films being considered for awards.
Here's where a new running feature comes into play:
As I start receiving these screeners, I will write special reviews for each one and publish them here. Then, as we near the voting deadline,...

With movies like the revenge-via-circular-saw High Tension and the skin-shredding Piranha remake, director Alexandre Aja has memorably dunked his characters in the blood bucket. Over the weekend, it was confirmed that Francis Matthews - a prolific and respected actor, star of stage and screen - had sadly died, aged 86.
As Captain Scarlet - the hero of Gerry Anderson's '60s 'Supermarionation' series - Matthews was one of the iconic voices of this writer's childhood.
To mark his passing, the Week in Geek revisits the first episode of Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons - first broadcast on UK television almost 50 years ago.
"The finger is on the trigger - about to unleash a force with terrible powers, beyond the comprehension of man. This force we shall know as… The Mysterons."
It's not your average science fiction children's series that opens with a moody and atmospheric crawl into a dark and dirty alley, where a lone gunman sprays bullets before being felled by return fire.

David Tennant, who had played the Time Lord since 2005 and was, arguably, more popular than any Doctor since the mighty Tom Baker hung up his scarf in 1981, had announced his resignation from the part he loved in October 2008. So the phone rings, and I answer it, and it's Mel Brooks. That's an actual thing that happened. That's now something I can say. And even better, the 40 minute conversation that followed me answering the phone is one of my favorites in recent memory. How often do you get to talk to a comedy legend about one of the pinnacle moments of not only their career, but of film comedy in general? I was told I'd have about 15 minutes originally. Time was tight. And if you get offered 15 minutes to talk to Mel Brooks about "Blazing Saddles," you take it, right? We ended up having a really fun back and forth about that film, about films he's produced, about his partnership with Gene Wilder, and about the ways Hollywood failed the great Richard Pryor. The only reason we wrapped it up is because we had to, and it would have...

Once upon a time, there was TV, and there were movies, and these were two very different worlds. The past twenty years have seen a gradual but important change, however, with the quality of television production increasing, and talent crossing those perceived boundaries both in front of, and behind the camera. The result of this ongoing change can now be enjoyed in the form of shows like True Detective, American Horror Story, House Of Cards, and soon, the as-yet-untitled Wall Street drama from John Cusack.
Currently in pre-production for CBS, the show centres around a smart hedge fund trader mired in the world of power, influence, manipulation and high finance that is America’s Wall Street. The cast is led by Charlie Cox (Stardust, Boardwalk Empire) as Jackson, the trader, with David Morse (The Hurt Locker) and Maggie Grace (Lost, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn) in supporting roles. Some movies have a difficult journey to the big screen, and it shows. World War Z is the latest film to experience such a problematic production, and although it isn’t perfect, it wasn’t a wasted effort.
World War Z is based on a book that doesn’t have a main character or primary storyline. For those who are not aware, Max Brook’s book of the same name tells the story of a world-wide zombie invasion from different individual accounts. The main character is the writer himself, listening to these stories and forming a big picture from other people’s words to help explain to the reader the post-apocalyptic social and physical landscape. In other words, this isn’t exactly something that transforms easily into a movie, let alone a big-budget blockbuster.
Therefore the film makers had a tough task ahead of them before they even began filming.

Film London announces Lilting, the latest project from Film London Microwave, will be distributed by Curzon Film World’s Artificial Eye in the UK with Protagonist Pictures to manage international sales. A striking feature debut from director Hong Khaou with an all-star cast led by Ben Whishaw (Skyfall, Cloud Atlas) and Cheng Pei Pei (Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon), Lilting explores love without a common language.
Written and directed by Khaou and produced by Dominic Buchanan, Lilting is the eighth film from the successful feature film fund Film London Microwave. Alongside Whishaw and Pei Pei, the film also stars Peter Bowles (Blow-Up, The Bank Job), Morven Christie (House of 9, The Young Victoria) and Andrew Leung (The List).
As part of Film London Microwave’s mentorship component, award-winning film-maker Michael Winterbottom acted as writer/director Khaou’s mentor, while producer Buchanan received guidance and support from his mentor Ken Marshall, the producer of London to Brighton, Filth and Song for Marion.
Curzon Film World’s Artificial Eye is known for its discerning taste in the best of European and world cinema. The label has released more winners of the Cannes Palme d'Or than any other UK distributor, with titles including The Class (2008) and The White Ribbon (2009).
Commercially-minded and creatively-spirited Protagonist Pictures is an international sales company committed to strong relationships with film-makers. Recent highlights in their catalogue include Searching for Sugar Man, Sightseers, The Imposter and Microwave’s Shifty. This year at Cannes they represent The Selfish Giant by Clio Barnard, screening in Directors’ Fortnight, and in the Critics’ Week, Paul Wright’s debut feature For Those In Peril.
Lilting tells the story of a Chinese mother (Pei Pei) as she grieves for her son (Leung) following his untimely death. He was her eyes and ears in the UK, their adopted country, and without him she is stranded. The only person left is his lover (Whishaw) – who she knows only as his flat mate. Together they are forced to overcome their differences and unite in sorrow whilst struggling against the absence of a shared language. An intimate and thoughtful film, Lilting addresses overcoming cultural and generational boundaries, the power of memory, and the lifelines and relationships formed in the face of grief.
Adrian Wootton, Chief Executive of Film London and the British Film Commission, said: “Lilting is a moving cinematic achievement and I am delighted that it will reach UK audiences through Curzon Film World and that Protagonist will be managing international sales. It is a testament to Microwave’s innovative approach to film-making that its projects attract high-calibre talent and prestigious commercial distributors and sales agents. The scheme’s successful track record is also a result of the Microwave team, who are integral to nurturing and guiding all our film-makers. I am proud to see another Microwave feature proving itself in the commercial marketplace and hope this is only the start of Lilting’s success.”
Louisa Dent, Managing Director of Curzon Film World said: "When we read the script, it was clear that this was something special. There is an emotional urgency that is compelling and honest. Hong is a real emerging talent and his short films marked him out. We knew that the Microwave/Film London team would be great partners on this and with a quality cast it seemed liked a perfect fit for us.”
Mike Goodridge, CEO of Protagonist Pictures said: “I had admired Hong's shorts so it was with great excitement that I watched his first feature Lilting. But Hong exceeds expectations: the film is an accomplished and mature portrait of love and loss, graced by two extraordinary lead performances. The whole Protagonist team was knocked out by it and we are confident it will be embraced by distributors around the world.”
Funded by Film London Microwave, additional finance came from production companies Stink Films and Andy Brunskill’s recently launched Sums Film and Media Ltd., supported by financier/producer Bob & Co, Lim Kay Sui and Neo Swee Lin.
Film London Microwave is a unique training-through-production scheme delivered in partnership with BBC Films and with support from Creative Skillset. Challenging London-based film-makers to shoot a feature film for up to £120,000, Film London Microwave enables talent to thrive in a limited budget with its integrated training programme which offers crucial guidance and mentoring throughout the film-making process.
The Film London Microwave team is made up of Creative Producer Mia Bays, who also acts as the Distribution/Marketing Consultant and Mike Kelly, Business and Finance Producer, alongside Film London’s Talent Development Manager Kevin Dolan and Development and Production Officer Tessa Inkelaar. Film London will soon be appointing a new Head of Talent Development and Production, who will head up the Microwave team.
Encompassing training and development from script to screen and beyond, Film London Microwave has enjoyed excellent results. Last year saw the successful UK theatrical releases of Ben Drew’s iLL Manors, released by Revolver, and Frances Lea’s Strawberry Fields, released through Soda Pictures’ New British Cinema Quarterly programme. Other films produced through the scheme include the BAFTA-nominated Shifty, award-winning horror Mum & Dad, documentary The British Guide to Showing Off, teen drama Freestyle and the yet to be release Borrowed Time which was awarded Best in Fest at the 2012 Edinburgh International Film Festival.
