The Ballad of Bobby Bishop (is somewhere in here)
Rogue-328 September 2004
Love Gallo, that's gotta be stated up front, that's why I wanted to see this film in the first place. He's great in it, of course, as 'empty' talk show host Bobby Bishop, searching the streets of New York City for his lost true love, Lily (Courtney Cox). There's a lot of other stuff going on as well (a LOT of stuff) - crazy people trying to steal Matthew Broderick's dog (to get closer to Sarah Jessica Parker), Lily's mother (the great Anne Meara), who is - get this - practicing to be a homeless person (just in case), gay boyfriends, insane friends, lying hookers, Bobby's beyond-brown-nosing manager (the fabulous Jeffrey Tambor, who played basically the same role on Gary Shandling's show). I think this is the main reason the movie is just not very satisfying -- there's simply too #$@kin' much going on, for $@#(*&ts sake.

If some of these characters had been left out (like most of them), and we had gotten to focus more on Bobby and his self-destructive-but-trying-oh-so-hard-to-make-it-work character, Get Well Soon would have been a far better movie. Gallo, with all his good/bad-and-everything-inbetween contradictions gloriously blazing in full form, could have easily carried the day.

A Talk Show Film That Says The Wrong Things.
eddiez6111 August 2011
I was going to criticize the movie for expecting me to believe that the nasal, twangy Vincent Gallo could ever be a real world talk show star, but then I remembered Conan O'Brien. So I'll criticize this movie for all of it's other unfortunate glaring shortcomings. Firstly, it's way too in love with itself, constantly pausing for us to admire it's daring brilliance and hip, snarky outrageousness. Some people might find it edgy but it's actually a rather staid, unremarkable, conventional study of celebrity life and all the attendant madness. It's more than common knowledge that many, if not most, talented performers are also afflicted with various forms of mental illness. Depression, bi-polar disorder, and even schizophrenia are frequently driving creative stars to exceptional extremes. So this analysis of the successful talk show host Bobby Bishop is redundant. Just witnessing a talk show star's actual performance is in fact a clinical analysis of their pathology. Dave Letterman, for instance, nightly exposes his damaged, twisted psyche to the nation. We are entertained by his otherwise socially aberrant behavior. If, however, we daily had to encounter such a bitter, cantankerous conflicted personality we would most likely move to another state. There's so many stories, many told by Dave himself, of just how antisocial he actually is. But he's managed to direct his neurosis into an entertaining and lucrative direction. And what about Johnny Carson or Jack Parr who we now know were sufferers of bouts of extreme depression? And Regis Philbin? He has admitted the same.

So exposing mental illness in the entertainment industry is old news, no longer a headline. Nor was it in 2001 when this film was released, but we're expected to be shocked and confused and fascinated by our hero's condition. It's a mildly interesting personal fact, nothing more, if you're judging by society's enthusiastic consumption of the latest varieties of mood elevating medications; we ARE the Prozac nation.

Anyway, Gallo has been in a few very interesting, off beat, challenging, controversial films, normally portraying quirky, troubled somewhat threatening but charismatic types. He's trying it again here, but that personality profile just doesn't work for this role. He comes off so self conscious and distracted that it's impossible to believe he was ever anything but repulsively narcissistic. A true talk show star is able to at least present a credible appearance of interest for others. Even the preposterous Larry King had an uncanny ability to stare his guests straight in the eye while his mind drifted to thoughts of what he'll order at Katz's deli later that evening. Actually, later that afternoon, you know, while they're still offering the early bird special.

So the love story is interesting, many of the conversations are entertainingly witty and clever, and a few of the situations are comical and original. But the timing is too often way off - stilted, rushed, erratic or rambling - probably because much of it seems improvised. And badly edited. Or rather, overly obviously edited, calling attention to its precious, wacky insouciance. I have never before used that word, insouciance, in writing, but this film demanded it of me. That should tell you just how frustrated I am with this well intentioned, but ultimately fatally flawed bit of stylized indulgence.

The film has nice themes and a nice romance but too much foul language for comfort
inkblot1111 December 2007
Bobby (Vincent Gallo), a very successful national television talk show host, stationed in Los Angeles, is having a near-breakdown. He begins asking very inappropriate questions to a beautiful female guest and, shortly after, takes a leave of absence. What is really bothering Bobby is that, long ago and far away, his name was Kevin and he gave up a nice relationship with Lily (Courteney Cox) to pursue his professional ambitions. Lily, who lives in New York City, is living with a jerk (Tate Donovan) and is still seething from Bobby's rejection, even though she watches Bobby's show consistently. But, she also has other problems to deal with, including a mentally ill brother and an eccentric mother (Anne Meara). When Bobby/Kevin comes home to the Big Apple and tries to contact her, will she answer his calls? This film has some very good messages about life and a fine cast. Gallo and Cox are attractive folks who command attention from the viewer, with Meara doing a nice job, too. Add on some good-looking costumes, sets, and production values and you have an eye-catching film. However, even though the script has its heart in the right place, that is, one should never choose success over personal happiness, it employs way too much bad language for comfort, in my opinion. Too bad one can not choose the "clean version" of a film, as one can do when buying a music CD. In any case, if you love romance and/or lesser-known films of quality, this is a good choice. But, if bad language offends you, you should go with something else, such as Return to Me.

Gallo delivers again; film succeeds in many areas
buff-188 February 2003
I must admit that I was captivated by Vincent Gallo's performance in "Buffalo '66" and that is the only reason that I was drawn to "Get Well Soon" when I saw it on the video rental shelf. So maybe I wanted to like this film more that others.

Regardless, I feel that "Get Well Soon" succeeded in many areas. The plot was a blend of dark comedy and soul-searching, much like "Buffalo '66" and Gallo gave almost as good a performance as the desperate, haunted protagonist. Courtney Cox delivers a solid performance as his old flame whom he's seeking to reunite with in hopes of getting a hold on his life again. Thrown into the mix are the mental illness of her mother and brother and latent homosexuality of her live-in boyfriend. Always troubled by the constant exposure to Gallo's "Bobby Bishop" character who's now a late night talk show host, Cox's character "Lily" cannot find solace in a world of overwhelming emotions.

This film is a success, despite the fact that it's not entirely original. However, the plot lines are intriguing and the characters are just short of mesmerizing. The story is told in a reverse pyramid fashion where the viewer has to deduce exactly what the relationship between the characters are.

This is by no means an outstanding film... but as far as Vincent Gallo movies go... I don't feel at all disappointed.

Where Have You Gone Bobby Bishop?
bkoganbing5 March 2010
The person everyone is hoping will Get Well Soon is TV talk show host Bobby Bishop as played by Vincent Gallo. The guy who most wants him to get well is Gallo's agent Jeffrey Tambor. His career rides on Gallo's career.

But they both look like they're circling the bowl as Gallo makes some rather crude remarks to a female guest. Immediately he's checked into a mental hospital with the explanation he's suffering a nervous breakdown.

Get Well Soon is a combination of One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest and Network and a few other films thrown in for good measure. It doesn't really succeed at being a good imitation of either of those classics. It gets really dull in spots, it has no real life to it.

It's just a bad imitation of some good classics.

37 Minutes
LibertadBGreen21 October 2004
I tried to watch this movie twice, after I borrowed it from the library, but failed to watch more than 37 minutes of it. I curtailed my first attempt because the characters were too annoying, and the plot didn't seem to be going anywhere. The second time I attempted to watch it, I simply fell asleep. After that, I decided not to torture myself with it anymore!

The hook comes when the protagonist, a talk show host named Bobby, introduces a supermodel on his show. Played by Carolina Parsons, this gorgeous model sachets onto the set in a miniskirt and a suggestive halter top, and, if you're a heterosexual man like I am, the most natural thing for you to think would be how much you'd like to have sex with her.

Bobby, floundering for any interest he might have in common with the model, comments that she shares his initials. She "guesses" that's true. Finally, Bobby gives up trying to sound intellectual with such a beautiful woman he can't think of anything to talk to about except the obvious (sex), and just tells her he'd like to "f***" her.

She and the stage crew are startled.

He follows up his crude remark with more crude remarks, about how much sex she probably has, and how tired she must be of sex.

She gets up and leaves. He is forcibly removed from the set.

Other than this scene, this movie seems to be a collection of home video clips of boring, pathetic people, including Lily, played by Courteney Cox, who also played Meryl on Seinfeld. This is apparently par for her course, because Seinfeld himself admitted that his TV series was about nothing.

If you enjoy watching footage about nothing, such as episodes of Seinfeld, then you will probably find this movie entertaining. If, however, you're like me and never could stand watching an entire episode of Seinfeld because it was so obviously about nothing, then you are not likely to enjoy this movie either.

bad
danny_inabox30 December 2005
i think this could be the worst attempt at stylish editing i have ever seen. i felt embarrassed watching it sometimes. i don't mind the film being bad so much but there was a certain smugness about the 'wackyness' of the humour that was extremely off putting. There is nothing new here, even though the writing is packaged as if we have never seen anything like this before. Drawn out supposedly awkward scenes just appear boring and clunky. There were one or two nice scenes with vincent gallo and Monica from friends. A lot of space in the dialogue for them to play with it, probably more due to lack of characterisation than creative freedom. Very poorly made film that feels very arrogant. i wouldn't really recommend this film. I only watched it because i like vincent gallo but even he under performed in this lukewarm disappointment. happy new year.

Gallo not right to play a talk show host
austenmessick127 August 2008
Vincent Gallo is a fine actor and a leading man. But, unfortunately he is completely unbelievable as a talk show host. The idea that the Bobby Bishop Show has an audience at all is absurd. Gallo is unfunny and has no stage persona. One could argue that his persona was altered because of his mental breakdown. There have been far better fake on-air breakdowns.

Network

Larry Sanders Show

Groundhog Day

Even Studio 60

This is a concept that is innately funny but very difficult to pull off. Mr. Gallo did not pull it off--unfortunately, this is the entire concept of the movie. I enjoyed seeing Mr. Gallo and Ms. Cox go at it as a romantic pair but the movie is flawed from the beginning with a poor performance by Mr. Gallo. He is, however, great in every scene he is not actually performing the duties of a talk show host. I cannot recommend this film, though, because the concept is so flawed that the rest of the scenes lack credibility.

Promising piece
fogg9814 February 2002
Mr Vincent Gallo is an absorbing, eye-catching beast. Whilst immediately drawn to his fractured features, it is his concentrated screen presence that you hold in mind. Here he plays Kevin, in the guise of the Bobby Bishop, a late-night talk-show host. Becoming increasingly aware of his frustrating emptiness, he starts to twist free of the ever-pandering agents, artists and parasites that accompany his fame. His thoughts turn to an abandoned love (Courteney Cox), and returning home for a reconciliation, encounters involving and amusing obstacles such as thieves, hookers, imitators, mental patients and the police. This is clearly Vincent's film, from the music to the awakened speech to camera near the end, however Courteney Cox performs admirably and the scenes with her mother are played well. The rest of the cast fill their scenes with delirious energy, although the wonderful talents and Romanian beauty of Elina Lowensohn were not rewarded with enough screen time. Director Justin McCarthy's direction is crisp. He develops the story well, and has framed New York nicely. Keep an eye out for 'Jump', an earlier piece of work.

Brilliant
dianagardner129 March 2006
This was an unexpected delight. Very witty and multi-layered, well-performed. Courteney Cox has become an incredibly versatile and subtle actress.

I was genuinely surprised at how good this movie was. A feel-good movie without being schmaltzy. Lovely plot turns and funny script. There is so much going on, especially with sub-plots (that tie together wickedly), that it bears up well to further viewings.

There is no going wrong with intelligent writing and talented actors. Bring on more movies like this.

Courteney Cox's career is definitely worth watching, as she seems to be making intelligent choices when selecting films to star in. It would be great to see her in more serious, nuanced roles.

Feel good at end love lost/love found wacky comedy
lar_lef4 June 2017
I liked it. It didn't strive to do too much and what it did it did well. Wacky comedy, gross at times, but justifiable in overall context. Not for the academy awards movie watchers, but if you like to run with its coyness, a good time will be had by all. You will forget this urban comedy after you view it, but while you are viewing it, a fun, manic, movie.

Very enjoyable.
princess_falula9 April 2010
In my opinion, Get Well Soon follows an intelligent, unique direction and is surely worth a watch. Courtney Cox and Vincent Gallo have an interesting, believable, albeit slightly odd, connection and this works well throughout the film. Both roles have been cast well, as even though the characters don't seem too complicated, their is clearly a lot of depth to each of them which would be difficult to act. The storyline is completely different to other rom-coms (if you insist on placing this film in that category), and the way some people are reporting of predictability and repetition in GWS, is complete madness. If nothing else, this storyline is certainly unique. You could say the film has a dark side, and I agree, but that is definitely intentional and makes it much more interesting. Aren't you all getting sick of unrealistic romance? The fact that the two main characters aren't loved-up from the beginning is a bonus for me, as it makes the whole thing more enjoyable to watch as the various, wacky plots unfold on-screen. This film has been subtly directed to suit the plot lines; there are no fancy-shmancy camera shot sequences, which works well and makes the whole thing more believable. The script was not written by genius's, and perhaps you won't find the story completely relevant but if you don't find this film remotely eyecatching and funny, there is something wrong with you! There was definitely not substantial credibility given when it first came out in 2001.

I can watch it time and time again for the wackiness of the characters and the comical twists which surprise me a bit more every time. And for these reasons, I give this film a well deserved 8/10.

Nothing like There's Something About Mary
glynyfaron15 October 2002
Warning: Spoilers
Where a lot of romantic comedies fall down is that you can not for one believe for one moment that the couple won't actually end up together, no matter what obstacles are tossed in their path. The truimph of Get Well Soon is that it casts Vincent Gallo, best know for playing a variety of sociopaths and oddballs, as the lead male. Just like in Buffalo 66, the Gallo character is so fundamentally self-destructive that you can really believe he's going to mess this up and it's almost a relief when he doesn't. Likeable supporting characters and a good performance from Cox, it's a shame this movie didn't get more recognition. Or indeed, any at all.

A Weird Kind of Good
IIscr3amII1 November 2002
Sure.. it's not the best movie made. And sure, it may be quite strange. But this movie is absolutley wonderful. Courteney Cox steals the spotlight from the moment she comes into screen. The camera shooting was quite unique.. but it was OK. No movie is perfect. And not every movie can be a box office record. This one wasn't a hit, but it should have been. It was a great plot, a great script, and an even greater cast. And that's all you need for a great movie.

How did this movie ever get made??!
Infofreak22 February 2002
I'm a Vincent Gallo nut. I love the guy and would even watch a movie of him reciting the phone book. That would probably be more entertaining than sitting through 'Get Well Soon'. Apparently this is a comedy. Coulda fooled me. The only laugh I got out of it was the sheer audacity of the video cover blurb which said it was "in the tradition of 'There's Something About Mary'. Say what?! '..Mary' was actually funny, 'Get Well Soon' isn't. And apart from that the similarity is? You tell me!

Vincent Gallo ('Buffalo 66', 'Palookaville') plays Bobby Bishop, a hip talk show host. He appears to be cracking up. He leaves his show in disgrace to return to New York and look up his old girlfriend (Courtney Cox) and attempts to woo her back. Mixed up with this are various, I hesitate to even call them sub-plots, involving mental patients and Matthew Broderick's dog. It's too stupid and pointless to even bother elaborating. Gallo radiates charisma, and is always watchable, even when the material is as poor and as dull as this. And boy! is it poor and dull.

The supporting cast includes Jeffrey Tambor (best known for 'The Larry Sanders Show', and who, funnily enough, was actually in 'There's Something About Mary'), Anne Meara (veteran character actor/comedienne, and mother to Ben Stiller), and Elina Lowensohn ('Schindler's List' and various Hal Hartley movies).

This is easily the worst movie Vincent Gallo has been involved with. It's even worse than 'Arizona Dream' which at least had a handful of outstanding scenes involving Gallo to redeem it. 'Get Well Soon' is a tedious bore from start to finish. I honestly can't think of one good thing about it. The fact is it's an awful movie that will please nobody. Let's just pretend it never happened...

The movie that a focus is in the place (at the time) where the focus shifted (I double a focus).
shoushi26 January 2005
Sorry,this is by machine translation.

They are the appendix of this movie, and a contribution review, "Also in gold and an appointment, a certain men are them. which was visible to a work called the degree of the second 3 as for the love story which throws away and goes to a sweetheart's basis". (an overseas review is too) which was seeing performance "able to fit in and smile at a jar" etc. however a story, performance, etc. -- natural -- although they are considered to even [ of an interesting element / "even" ] if it is in a story or a division called performance -- others -- without limit -- " -- it -- . with the movie measure" -- I feel that I am not so common as it tidies up at a comedy or a nonsense word noisily again, either.

then -- if it says where was interesting -- "how to exist" . -- then, I was interesting as a movie of what kind of "how to exist" -- I am . -- if it says simply [ of a movie ] As . whose "laughter" <=> "serious" and "insanity" <=> "senses" most point ., i.e., "serious" scenes, of "having been perverted" is "laughter" on almost all scenes, and is serious [ the scene of "laughter" / which is not attached with actualities and I do not leave / "serious" ], and a sight "senses" the characters to serve -- in fact --. whose place which should have slightly sad" disposition which was out of order, or should become serious [ that / at which I cannot laugh / "serious" ] but "was amusing" only in extremely. fine as this is drawn on the basis of a certain fixed law like expression -- I think that this law can also do how to catch the "necessity" for making it not entwined by conditions.

About "necessity", the words of an audience rating so and so near the last are symbolic, "Distinction" with common TV drama (TV media) . . "a reason is intelligible" prepared or whose "a reason is not known" are not "the amusingness which a reason does not understand", either -- visible way . that a focus is in the place where the focus shifted just for a moment in fact -- the place (at the time) where "focus shifted when saying more "if", a focus is not in sight" -- on a movie [ like ], it does not have the division which laps also with my "reality" -- I am .

complication of "laughter" <=> "serious" and "insanity" <=> "senses" which crazy each one of the insane asylum of people who divide and come out and are in not only the leading role's Vincent Gallo but old her surroundings, or a supporting player to say shows / . which sensed fun for >> when inverted -- this -- how [ "movie ] -- if it says without hiding although it is feel " reality ". with a certain independent nature, I will say whether having seen with a favorable eye from before seeing Vincent Gallo who has originality of enough only by a face has the "focus" at the time of offering "only one interpretation" of a movie in the place whose manufacturer of this work is the television persons concerned surely in itself -- enjoying -- a way -- the bottom.

Off the wall film
mtndance13 January 2003
An enjoyable, but weird film. Liked seeing Ann Meara - a long-time favorite from way back and always like seeing Courtney Cox. BUT, Courtney, you can do better than Vince Gallo! I really couldn't see him as a "popular" talk show host. The guy looks like a rat, with his scuffy beard, every-which-way hair and sloppy clothes. Couldn't casting have shopped around for somebody more believable?

Otherwise the rest of the bunch a crazies was really enjoyable to watch.

very poor
milosz_m22 May 2004
this is a very poor romantic comedy. it was not very romantic and also not very funny.and Vincent Gallo really annoyed me with gestures, appearance and his voice.Courteney Cox looks very nice as always but she can't do much to save this movie because it just lacks a good screenplay.the story isn't really interesting, the love story isn't much believable as the characters constantly find a new problem why they can't be together when you thought there was none. they love each other, we know it, and they know it but they try to make the film to last a little longer than an hour. and Gallo whining all the time is really horrible. I don't know maybe it's me but I found him very, very annoying in this flick.happy end is of course just a matter of time but the characters try to make the way leading to it as long and as pseudo-philosophical as they can. It is a watchable movie, it has Courteney Cox but that's really everything. if you have a sleepless night and you find it airing on cable it can be a good time killer.

Surprisingly Good
tracykrieg7 June 2002
I had not seen any trailers or heard any reviews about this film. I rented it for the sole purpose of seeing one of my favorites, Courteney Cox. The scenes with Cox and her brother & mother are supreme, and she steals the scene when on-screen with Gallo. Good fun, even if just for the guilty joy of watching my favorite "friend" get angry and curse. Well cast and well acted. B+
